Don’t you just hate Mondays?
Especially after holiday weekends.
Particularly after the Canadiens lose … badly.
• Habs self-destruct
• Pacioretty remorseful
• About last night …
• Pierre Ladouceur’s analysis
O’byrne a plus 10, more than any Dman on the Habs…think about it martin…he became sick of playing for you…and the same is gonna happen to PK…some other team will have a great Dman.
I see idiocy and triplex go hand in hand. Captain Troll (aka triple) must not be having fun in Hawaii lol my guess the dvd he got on Hawaii is over :).
“I have never failed at anything in my life so far… TripleX 12/23/2010 16:34pm”
The same Serge savard who did not go to Pat Burns’ funeral because he had issues with him.
The same Savard who on a daily basis had clashes with his teammates. (even fistfights)
The same Savard who was one of the worst GMs to ever be and started this downward spiral with dumb decisions.
I believe you weren’t born yet, so it’s not you’re fault.
The lesson being, don’t believe anything unless you’ve experienced it firsthand.
Oh and he played along side Guy Lapointe and Larry Robinson in front of Ken Dryden and behind about 10 future HOFers, hence the Stanley Cups.
We’re not delusional. And we were alive when he was GM and clearly remember the idiocy.
Two words: John Leclair (but you could easily say Chris Chelios or Claude Lemieux)
It’s not the the coach needs to change lives (though some coaches do) but it’s the coaches job to keep the whole team up, to help them have confidence in the face of challenges. Price isn’t alone in slipping… the whole team is looking like last year’s Habs. The most positive thing we can say about that is that last year’s Habs ended up doing quite well. Of course they were in front of a different – and arguably more steady – goaltender.
Thanks BJ! Nice to get support from across the ocean. I thought a lot about that post… glad it rang true for some.
I take it you think JM is a better judge of talent and overall better hockey mind than Senator Serge Savard.
The Savard with TEN Stanley Cup Rings…..8 as a player and 2 as a GM!
No match for JM in your mind I suppose.
“What makes someone french Bugs from you’re point of view?”…Submitted by Storm Man on Thu, 12/23/2010 – 17:04.
Yes the same Serge Savard who won 8 Cups as a player and 2 Cups as a GM. THAT SAVARD!
Savard? Serge Savard? OK. You run with that TX.
You’re hoisted by your own petard here, sailor:
“With all due respect to you, I think [Jacques Martin] is a better judge of Dmen than anyone on HIO [including XXX].”
Subban and Lapierre argue at Practice!
Good things come to those who wait…But only what’s left by those who hustle!
I agree with some of that. But it’s his job to stop those and look like it is his job. I just think he hasn’t looked particularly interested for some reason. His puck control is atrosious(?). Just saying he’s back to his old habits, hopefully not his old mind frame. I like OCT. and NOV Price much better. He lookedd interested AND confident.
I watch every game and not through rose coloured glasses, granted he hasn’t been as good as he was the first couple of months where he was” playing out of mind” but then again it’s pretty hard if not impossible to play at that level forever. How many odd man rushes, breakaways and deflections both off his own players and opponents have resulted in goals during the current stretch. Not making excuses for him, just stating the obvious.
Hey, that sounds like last year as well. Got anything original? If you go back and watch the game without rose coloured glasses you’ll see what I ‘m talking about. While your at it, watch the last 5 or 6 games. You see.
probably shaking his head wondering when they’re going to stop hanging him out to dry
Prices’ body language the last few games has been very telling, to me. He looks very much like the guy from last year who lost way more games than he won. He’s not following the puck very well at all. In fact, he doesn’t seem interested in playing. And it’s not that he’s tired. He doesn’t look tired. He looks disinterested, just like last year. He was shaking his head last night like it everyone’s fault but his. Shades of 2009/10. God I hope he goes back to the guy who played so well in Oct & Nov.
Merry Xmas one and all. Behave on New Year’s Eve.
price was very weak on 2 of the goals…. never his fault though:-) auld should have played anyways yesterday
Thanks for your opinion, but I remember your posts concerning Hal Gill before his great playoffs with the Habs last year…and then you disappeared….In fact your profile says it all:
what goes around comes around and…you just proved you don’t like it when someone makes a comment you don’t like…so right back at ya…
”if you don’t like what you see here get the funk out”
Serge Savard is clearly a better judge of talent than anyone here, but maybe we should take what he said with a grain of salt, no?
There is no way anyone can consider Subban to be the best player on the team. Maybe he will one day, but there is no way he is better than Pleks, Cammy, Price etc. That statement is akin to claiming Seguin is the best player on the Bruins, maybe one day, but that day isn’t today.
what does your response have to do with my post. btw, i do PAY and attend the occassional game during the year.also, what difference does it make if i pay and/or watch on tv im still a fan weather the team sucks or not. can you say the same.
Pleks is the best player on the team, no doubt about it. Subban will be good, but hes not there yet
“I don’t know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.”
– Bilbo Baggins
gill is better when it comes to playoffs, regular season he should get nights off.
Hmmm…agreement on some points to be sure. Let’s see how JM manages his way through this rough spot because that’s what it appears to be, a rough spot. I think our biggest failings continue to be the ones so many of us have harped on for a couple of years. We do not have an all-star scorer who can dominte games and appear regularly in the NHL top 10 goals category and we do not have an all-star D man who can quarterback the powerplay. All the rest of this is just the day-to-day soap opera stuff most teams go through in a season.
I listened to the game on CJAD last night and Serge Savard had some interesting things to say about PK. Firstly, he said there was no justification for the extended benching and he was stumped by JM and his decision. Secondly, he said not only is PK the BEST defense-man on the team, he is the BEST player period on the team.
With all due respect to you, I think Savard is a better judge of Dmen than anyone on HIO.
The team seems to be playing hurt and tired. They do not have the team depth to easily overcome these problems
and will simply have to work out of this slump. It may take time and hopefully the team will not drop significantly
in the standings. I am sure the club is looking forward to the new year and playing at home.
Go Habs Go!
wanna see a big improvement in habs play? instead of pairing PK up with turtle gill, bench gill. pair Pk up with any other D, and play webber. Allow both to make rookie errors. stop mixing lines up every 2 or 3 shifts. by the end of the year, things should look rosier. gill absolutely does not fit in. speed is too important an asset not to have in today’s NHL. you’re welcome!
Was one of those let’s stay in the penalty box, we can’t hit the net if it was a soccer net type of games.
quite obvious you don’t pay to see games like most of the fans…you’re a tv watcher
Need more help in front of Price.
I have to agree with “Smart Dogs” comments at 11:25 below. I would add that so far this year “the mistake” was twofold a) the lack of support from the coaches and the team for PK when Richards was mouthing off (regardless of what may have happened or may not have been happening re. PK vs the veterans in the dressing room, that should have been an internal matter) b) benching PK which may be the start of Martin’s demise as coach here.
You could also add that not making the best use of both Pouliot and Kostitsyn’s talent. They are certainly no Guy Lafleur’s but certainly capable players with a good measure of talent. Their stats compare well to most players on the team.
A number of posters including myself thought this month would be a good indication of where this team would stand. So far it looks like it could be a tight collar race for the playoffs. The key to our great start was Carey Price, now he is average and the rest of the team does not look as good without him being borderline miraculous (as Halak was last year).
It was pretty bad. I took the kids night sledding after the second period. You could tell they weren’t going to score any goals. None of them were able to pick corners. No shots were blocked, and Carey was good, but not great. No biggy though. You can’t win them all.
They Call Me Shane
Sounds like agreement to me. Gotta live a little Dave. I’m not far out on a limb, I’m just stringing together a few thoughts to form a picture of a coach who’s team is spinning and instead of being steady on the tiller (and taking some responsibility) he’s acting much more Carbo than Bowman.
I called Subban a potential all-star. I think that’s fair. No-one says the same thing about Picard or Gorges for that matter. But Subban they do. With reason. If Martin can bring out the best in him.
So I missed the game last night – was it as bad as it sounds?
We’re in a slump. The world isn’t ending.
– JM stop changing the line up after little mistakes
– Stop benching PK, some of our old guys need a night off, it’s clear in the 3rd period
– Price isn’t doing poorly, guys in front of him need to help him out more (aware that some weak ones go in but that’s any goalie)
– Auld needs more playing time or when he does get in the net, it’ll look like the Atlanta game again
– Gorges isn’t 100% and everyone knows it
– Penalties, penalties, penalties
– Need a shooting practice and that’s it, unbelievable how many times our forwards are missing the wide open chances
Desharnais will be an NHL with us or somebody else.
He gives a 100 percent every shift and has the talent to excel on the power-play and with a finisher.
Tom Pyatt cant hit the side of a barn and Martin continues to use him. We have enough penalty-killers on this team. (Pleks, Moen, Gomer, Gionta, Laps, and now Cammy)
no it’s not a joke. if the team can hit the net at the other end and stay out of the box and help him out we wouldn’t be losing as much as we have in this stretch. so you’re the joke for saying that is a joke
Ouch, you had me going, my blood pressure was starting to spike there for a second. I’m tempted to stir the pot and point out that the reality LeBlanc is far from a sure thing for even becoming an NHL regular let alone a top 6 forward. I hope he becomes a star for the Habs, but he is a long way away.
I’m going out on a limb here but I don’t think last night either Spacek or Hamrlik had any more or less responsibility for the loss than any other player. During this recent swoon almost none of the Habs have stepped up and played to their potential. That’s the part that bugs me most. Inconsistent, amateurish, lazy…and that’s just the towel boy. This bunch of high paid coasters is more interested in looking good, dressing hip and creating perfect hacknyed soundbites for the adoring media.
Actually you’re on a different limb, higher up and with a greater distance to fall. You suggest PK is an all star defenceman? We’re talking about the same PK here, are we? The kid is a long way from all star status and isn’t even the Habs best. Insert the word “furure” somewhere in your description and you have a point. But now? All star? Not.
Is JM the problem? I don’t know because I don’t have access to the room like so many others on this site. What I see is a team of overpaid bums doing nothing to earn their keep. What I see is a coach who is tinkering with lineups and matchups that don’t seem to work. Maybe he should just try reaming a few high priced a–holes or pull a Boubreau in the room. Anything to get these guys motivated again.
have to agree with you here, they cannot play every single night. get PK out of the stupid press box.
gorges is definitely not 100% and hasn’t been for awhile.
here’s a flashback from the 90’s for all the negative nellies and trolls who come out when things get bad.
”if you dont like what you see here get the funk out”

”we wont try to force feed you get the funk out”

yes the habs are in a bad spell, but, if this team has any drive we will come out of it soon so let the chips fall where they may and hopefully the ship will right itself.

Agreed, until our Russian down there shows more and when Kristo comes and plays, we got all the AHL guys up with us.
This is our typical December slump, unless some of you have forgotten. JM needs to stop switching up lines and putting people in the press box who should not be there. Also, for those of you who are blaming yesterday on PRICE, give me a break guys. If you noticed how many missed chances at the other end we had, can’t even hit the net…well those could have easily been goals, Roloson was down and out on a bunch. Need to help Price out, and also not take stupid penalties. What do you want from Price if we can’t stay out of the box or hit the net? Every goalie does let in weak ones but come on. I know Auld should be playing more but that’s JM’s call.
I expect Montreal to come out flying against the Caps. I expect PK to be back in the line up as well as Moen but you never know with Martin. Drives me nuts. PhD line please, Cammy Plek AK46, Gomez Gionta and Patchy, give me lappy eller and moen, sit pyatt, halpern and moen can kill penalties.
Maybe it is high time that we call up Leblanc? Louis can really bring some extra depth to this team. I can see him playing top six minutes right now. He is ready.
Before I am crucified, I joke :p
If only we had somebody like that O’bryne guy in Colorado.
Nope, there isn’t anybody left in Hamilton that is likely to become an NHLer in the short-term. I suppose White is a a possibility as an energy guy. Desharnais is not an NHLer, as much as he is a great AHLer (think Corey Locke). Maxwell might still make the NHL, but he isn’t having a great year. Carle is hurt again. Nobody else is banging on the door. Our good young guys, Subban, Pacioretty, Eller, Webber are with the big club.
…and I’ll add to that, apparently Jorges is playing hurt. Our most underated D man …. Not good
Considering the current slump do you guys think that the team has anything to lose really by trying out some experiments from our Hamilton boys? Calling up Desharnais and maybe white for a game or two to see if they can add a spark to this confused offensive group we have? Doesn’t have to be a long term decision but it could change the dynamics and pace of the group a bit and inject some desire since those guys will definitely play a little harder to prove themselves? How Martin would react to so many young guys on the team is a completely different story…
Like the Penguins were ticked about last year? Bring the Capitals on I say, just the kind of game to wake the players up.
– I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.
I hope so, I just have a bad feeling the Capitals may be a little pissed from last year and score 6 or 7.
Scary stat that has been masked up until this point due to our lofty perch in the standings. We aren’t really top of the east anymore we are turning into the floaters everyone thought we’d be. I’m not being negative either its just true.
What happened to early games this season where it seemed like Martin was thoroughly out-coaching his opponents? He seemed to be making the best decisions in terms of player match ups and such and since P.K.’s first benching the team and management have seemed to be in complete disarray. I don’t think Webber should necessarily be benched but he nor Picard should be playing instead of Subban. Roll seven D as Boone suggests since Pyatt is contributing very little up front.
They better win when I’m at the Panthers game. I’ll be pissed if they have a stinker.
Perhaps. But the Caps don’t seem to have much drive or character as of late.
Thats a bit of a problem, theyre not physical and yet they are bit slow to play a speed game.
[Disclaimer]: I’m a hockey fan. I care about the habs, but probably not as much as you.
Yeah but the caps have it more I think, up 3-1…Playoff choking tag on them more than Pittsburgh.
How many D on the Habs can thrown a check like PK ? none
Thats pretty bang on.
The Pens had revenge on their minds too and the Habs beat them.
Carey seems to be playing good? That’s a joke, right??
What they should do is start Auld and mail it in against the caps and save their energy for FLA and TB. No way the habs win against the caps, caps have revenge in front of their fans on their minds.
This team could be strong but you have to wonder if they can be strong under Martin, or at least without Martin developing better judgement in player decisions than he has shown this season. During this slide, Martin has made sa list of head-scratchers – that and his dour expression are about the only consistant things on this team.
Spacek and Hamrlik are over-taxed and have had some terrible games. Price is showing fatigue from being treated like he’s superhuman. Early on Martin had two strong lines (Pleks and Halpern) and he’s f-d them both up by constantly shuffling players.
There are so many obvious questions. Can’t Martin et al see that Hamrlik and Spacek aren’t capable of playing heavy-duty shut-down roles night after night? Why is a 24-year old goaltender who has shown in previous years that over-taxing him is not the best idea, being relied on to play not just a strong majority of games but 70 or more games? Why is the PHD line – one of our best lines for the first 15 games – not together? If Scott Gomez is well known to be a perrenial slow starter, why did Martin mess up his other lines to try to get him going?
Martin started the year well, but almost every experiment he has tested since has failed. Moen on the 2nd line? And most peculiarly, why is PK Subban not on the ice learning from experience? If all Martin can do to control a potential all-star player is bench him, than he’s pathetically short of options as a coach and leader.
Benching PK just doesn’t make sense on a team missing it’s all star
defenceman. Considering that PK essentially replace Markov during the
playoffs and has the power on many nights to be one of our best players
it’s a head scratcher not just here on HIO but throughout the league.
Consider too the support shown for Price during years of struggle, and
contrast that with how PK is treated. If Price was a thoroughbred,
surely PK falls in the same category. Is corralling him the right thing
to do with THIS thoroughbred?
You have to wonder if Martin is either going to quickly put his best lines back together, get PK back out there, and put more consistancy in his own performance, or if he’s going to line-juggle and player-juggle his way to a slow dismissal.
Somethings gotta give. If Martin thinks line tweaking or a call-up can save the team he’s sorely mistaken. It needs better, wiser, and more fair and consistant decision-making. It’s very ealry to say he’s “losing the room”, but it does seem like he’s lost the rhythm of things. Sadly he doesn’t seem like he has a lot of rythm to give.
Here’s what I expect to happen: Martin wakes up and does most of the things we’ve been saying he should do for weeks: put PHD back together, get PK out there with a veteran partner, keep Moen in the bottom six, stop the line-juggling. But why are these things any smart fan can see? Where’s the wisdom this veteran coach is supposed to bring?
The main concern for now has to be the wear and tear of our seniors on the D. 6-44-75 need to have the occasional night off. It is starting to show big time, especially in the third periods.
As road trip continues
42 points out of 36 games or 1.16 points per game in 2010-2011
88 points out of 82 games or 1.07 points per game last season
I can still say pretty confidently, I expect a high-end game from the Habs against the Capitals. It’s the swing through Florida that has me worried, expecting to leave Florida with only 2 points from that leg of the trip.
OMG – like seriously what the heck is happening wit the team? Carey seems to be playing good, but the guys in front wont friggin score!!! its suppose to be Happy Holidays but its not so much happy when this team isnt working – they gotta find their swagger soon because we’re going to fall out of the playoff picture and loose our 3rd place very soon if they dont.
GO HABS GO!!…. Your my Team Canada lets get back into the game!!
