Audio: Shopping mostly done, Souray gone: Gainey

Canadiens general manager Bob Gainey told the Montreal media this morning in a wide-ranging talk at the Bell Centre that even with $2-3 million left in his salary budget, his free-agent shopping is pretty much done – no Alexei Yashin or Brendan Shanahan, thank you very much – though he’ll keep an open mind should something stupendous fall into his lap.

Gainey also added that defenceman Sheldon Souray is no longer in talks with the club, those discussions having ended yesterday, and that forward Michael Ryder has filed for salary arbitration and fellow forward Tomas Plekanec might soon follow suit.

Here is Gainey in his own voice, in English and French interviews.

The Gazette’s Pat Hickey summarizes Gainey’s address here, and in the paper today writes that May’s four-year, $23-million signing of defenceman Andrei Markov was a bargain.
