Audio: Setting the scene for Game 1

AUDIO: Jacques Martin | Michael Cammalleri | Hal Gill | Ryan O’Byrne | Glen Metropolit | Penguins coach Dan Bylsma | Penguins captain Sidney Crosby 1 and 2

The Canadiens and Penguins skated this morning at Mellon Arena in advance of tonight’s first game in the Eastern Conference semifinal.

Biggest news: Canadiens defenceman Jaroslav Spacek skated, but was ruled absolutely out for tonight’s game by Habs coach Jacques Martin.

And Penguins coach Dan Bylsma went into candid details about what his team must do on the power play that clearly the Washington Capitals didn’t do.

More from Stubbs here on Twitter.

  1. gohabs1170 says:

Word on the street..Spacek is done for the season-

Guess it is benign positional vertigo. Pretty serious- Advised to rest and no more workouts or skates

Stinks..and now with Markov, we are really down defenceman…

The other guys are going to need to step it up.

  2. habssince1909 says:

From what is being reported it seems like he has a virus in the middle ear, which throws off the balance making him dizzy.  Sometimes it takes awhile to recover from this type of virus.  Hope it is not more serious than that.

  3. habssince1909 says:

Seems like it will be ALOT more physical ………..

  4. habssince1909 says:

Someone had to step up and show that our guys won’t be pushed around, no matter who it is, a tone has to be set – would you rather no one stepped up??

  5. slapshot777 says:

Considering that the Habs had only one day to prepare and the Pens had four days. The first period was not that bad. I think the Pens were hoping that they would be further ahead than that.

To you from failing hands we throw the torch, be yours to hold it high.

  6. slapshot777 says:

Hopefully Markov comes back for the second period and is not injured. I hate CBC doing the games. They have a hate on for the Habs. If you were listening to the game on radio and Bob Cole was doing it you would swear that Pittsburgh played the whole period in the Habs end.

To you from failing hands we throw the torch, be yours to hold it high.

  7. McIntyre18 says:

I personally love that Gomez has that fire. I don’t care how much money he makes, clean hit or not Markov is hurt. I’d be more upset if we didn’t try to start a fight.

Reminds me of the hit on Koivu a couple years back, Souray went after Armstrong I think it was. Sure he got a penalty but you can’t let them walk all over you.

  8. homerbowen says:

Just what we need another tiny tot!

  9. homerbowen says:

Why does Gomez (the $8 million dollar man) have to go after Cooke? Doesn’t he have a brain…he’s paid to score not get the s–t kicked out of him. What an idiot.

  10. The Cat says:

Its not insane cause we know he tires after a few -and its perfectly understandable as hes mostly seeing an abnormal workloads- but you got to go with the hot hand, always.

    Lol! Good one Stewie!

“Hey Richard, two minutes for looking so good!”

  13. newbrunswick troy says:

On a further note….today Habs signed young DUMONT from drummondville…i had seen him play a couple of times in St.john….he,s really gifted as his stats show…..but he deffinitly isn,t the 5-10″ /180lb  the habs brag about….5-8″maybe 5-9″  and for sure only 170-175lbs…….and worse yet i think he,s like one of the least penalized playeys in the Q

*****Is Gainey still up there….or do we get extra points for Lady Bing awards??????

  14. newbrunswick troy says:

Geeze…what the heck is up with just what kind of virus did he get anyway…the common cold..or worse a venerial virus….cause thats all that i can think of that would keep me out of the lineup for half a series..maybe more

  15. secretdragonfly says:

Not sure which one you mean but click on the “Photos” tab at the top of the page – there are a couple there.

  16. pmaraw says:

    i chuckled 😀

Guy walks into a bar and asks for an Ovechkin.
Bartender, confused, asks “What’s an Ovechkin?” … “Just a white
Russian without the ice and cup.”

“rub that off”… rather… “rub one off”

     LOL  and welcome aboard!

  22. petrov14 says:

Anyone know a link to that pic of Ovie skating by Halak? That would make a great desktop!

  24. habsguy says:

ya he did!!!!!!!!,  the fist one got Theo chased from the net,  the second even you could have put it in ,  the third bounced in off his ass…..I hope he sees only the press box,  then gets run out of town with his brother!!!

What a way to ruin a perfectly good set of underwear.

Straight off the one rollercoaster and right on to the next.

Strap yourselves in, ladies and gents.

  30. Chuck says:

It doesn’t mean that you’re fatigued, but if you concentration starts to go then you could use the mental rest, if nothing else.

The skaters also have the benefit of only being on the ice 15-25 minutes per game.

Cheer for the crest on the front of the jersey, not the name on the back.

    Exactly… well said

  32. Chuck says:

You’ve got to admit, that would be an awfully nice problem for JM — and the Pens — to have to ponder.

Cheer for the crest on the front of the jersey, not the name on the back.

  33. Say Ash says:

    Everybody’s pre-game ritual is special, isn’t it?

  34. SLONCOLD says:

    cruel but funny

  35. SLONCOLD says:

Price doesn’t have to prove anything. He has to be ready if needed but Jaro is our guy

  36. Brocas Brain says:

What happens if Price gets a shutout … still go back with Halak?

  37. SLONCOLD says:

chucky… do we have to give camalerri, pleks, gionta a break? They r smaller players too lol

Just because u have a bad game doesn’t mean you’re fatigued, it means u played a bad game.

Jaro is the man going foward unless he gets hurt or stinks it up big time, you’re not seeing carey

  38. Brocas Brain says:

Habs scored the 1st goal in 5 of 7 (Cammy had 3 of them) games against the Caps.  The let’s hope this continues against the Pens and make them play from behind! Go habs Go!

  39. Habitant in Surrey says:

…off-subject to tonight’s exciting ‘happening’ tonight

it seems the re-naming of the Lester B. Pearson Trophy by the NHLPA is
fait-accompli …Is anyOne besides Me still pissed for re-naming a
trophy that has an almost 40-year history ?

    …was it a Total
    NHLPA Membership initiative …or a Chelios/Fehr (American) iniative ?

a (Terrible) Ted Lindsay qualitatively-representative of the player of
the year award (chosen by their peers) ? …WHEN was ‘Terrible’ Ted
Lindsay EVER the BEST player during his NHL career ? …or close (…the
Wings most often losin’ to Our Habs during his days in the NHL)

it was to be re-named ? …WHY was it not named the Lindsay-Harvey
Memorial Award to recognize the first 2 EQUALLY most important
initiators of organizing NHL players as a precursor to today’s NHLPA

believe the ‘re-naming’ was a Chelios/Fehr ‘thang’ …and the typical
NHL player are but ‘sheep’ letting these Americans f&5k-around with
    Our (the NHL’s) History

  40. lavie says:

Who had the Hat in the 1st round?

  41. marshx says:

agreed. Andrei needs to actually break a sweat for the remainder of the playoffs, otherwise, ship his ass and bring in some youth that will actually play.

  42. marshx says:

    double post.

  43. Chuck says:

Well, he uses funny-sounding words like “kicker”, “kit” and “rover”, too.

Cheer for the crest on the front of the jersey, not the name on the back.

  44. puck face says:

Halak does tire so your post isn’t all that crazy but you need to stand by the man who made miracles so if Halak does pull it off tonight it’s a statememt to the pens , maybe gHalak gets in their heads a little and causses some worrries. also what if Price starts then pulls a 50 save night?

  45. Chuck says:

How is giving Halak a couple of days rest “taking it easy” and “surviving”?

Carey has traditionally played the Pens well (he even got his first win against them) and this season Jaro’s looked tired after more than a few starts in a row… and don’t forget that game 2 is a Sunday afternoon 2pm start.

The break in the first round did Halak a world of good.

The only thing that I’d change would be to start Jaro tonight, and unless he’s otherworldly as he was in game 6, give him Sunday off.

The question of resting a goalie in the playoffs is a tricky one; do you rest early in the series, or later on when you might already be down by a couple of games?

Of course, the solution would be to have a stud goalie playing who could handle the workload. We’ll see if Jaro is that guy.

Cheer for the crest on the front of the jersey, not the name on the back.

  46. Grabbed The Cup says:

Any chance you can mail me a little of what you’re smokin’ buddy?

You leave me little notes on my pillow. Told you 158 times I can’t stand little notes on my pillow. “We’re all out of cornflakes. F.U.” Took me three hours to figure out F.U. was Felix Unger!

  47. jrshabs1 says:

I sure hope A. Kostitsyn plays with a little more heart and passion than he did in the 1st round. If he doesn’t maybe a package trade with  little Kos for some draft picks is just what the Canadiens need. Free up some cap space and unload 2 heartless plugs. GO HABS GO!!!!!!!

  48. Lancer says:

They should play this for the habs before every game and especially in the Bell ccenter.

  49. dufour says:

Just because it’s a 7 game series, doesn’t mean you can take it easy for one. You go out and play to win, not survive till next game. The plan could also backfire and Halak could come back cold, he is in a rhythm now.

“How would you like a job where when you made a mistake, a big red light goes on and 18,000 people boo?” Jacques Plante

  50. alestar says:

    XXIV…and counting

  51. derfab says:

Further to my endorsement of the Price choice: If the habs win one of the first two, they win the series.

  52. derfab says:

This is exactly what I thought, especially the psychological part, which is huge right now. If we win one game in Piit. we negate their advantage.  If we lose with Price we still have Halak, rested, to turn to. Martin doesn’t have the balls though.

  53. habs03 says:

man things were going so well on the site until you wrote that post!! 😛

  54. Say Ash says:

Absolutely correct. Racicot should have gotten way more starts in ’93, too.

  55. punkster says:

By the way I haven’t seen you weigh in on this series yet. What do you like and dislike about the matchup?

  56. TripleX says:

Ummmmm……I am trying to understand your logic here dude.  Sit the hottest goalie in the playoffs who just carried his team in one of the BIGGEST upsets ever, in order for the backup to get a chance to PROVE himself?   WTF???

  57. habs03 says:

No way man, I love Carey Price but NO WAY, IF and only IF Halek is tired what JM needs to do is if any of the games get out of head, ex us giving up 2,3 early goals, he needs to change things up by puttin Price in to give Halak a rest for the next game.

  58. punkster says:

Nay? You throw a nay into a hockey discussion?

  59. lavie says:

You are either Price or Gainey.

  60. Tis Himself says:

    No, nay, never!!!

  61. montreal1 says:

i have a good feeling that price wont play another game for the habs, just a feeling, hopefully someone will make us a nice offer sheet come draft day 🙂

  62. mike g says:

I just lit a match, and threw it where your comment was on my screen..

“These head movies make my eyes rain” -Simple Jack

  63. Lee Hayes says:

Maybe I’ll be roasted for this post…

I say start Price tonight, give Jaro another nights rest. Tell him (and Carey) straight up; Price get’s the start tonight, but we go with Jaro the rest of the series. This way Price get’s the chance to prove he’s got what it takes in the playoffs, and Halak get’s the rest he needs. Also Halak will know that he has the entire series to play after tonight. It screws with the Pens heads a bit too.

    O.K. light me up.

    Go Habs Go

  64. montreal1 says:

believe me i did, but the guy who called in sick is not even a hockey fan, let alone a sports fan, but still just juicy, now the worst part is having to call everyone and tell them i cant make it, my last piece of hope is that everyone has the common sense to watch the game at home or a different resto, or at an actual bar, maybe it will be dead tonight, and i’ll jet by 7 pm 🙂

  65. montreal1 says:

and its even worse when your working for family there is zero excuse not to come in, just find it fishy if you know what i mean, very bitter
