Audio: Canadiens roster shaping up

With one more practice before the team heads to Buffalo for the first of three road games to begin the season, it’s almost certain that Christopher Higgins, Georges Laraque and Francis Bouillon will miss the opener Friday night.

None of the players participated in yesterday’s practice in Verdun although Laraque did work out on his own earlier  in the morning and Higgins spent some time in the gym before going to see the doctor.

The lines for the opener are shaping up this way:

• Andrei Kostitsyn-Plekanec-Kovalev
• Latendresse-Koivu-Tanguay
• Sergei Kostitsyn-Lang-Kostopoulos
• Bégin-Lapierre-Dandenault

Markov and Komisarek will be the No. 1 defence pair; Hamrlik teams with O’Byrne and Gorges will be with Brisebois

Here’s audio of Andrei Markov discussing moving to the right point on the power play, and associate coach Doug Jarvis talking about the power play.

  1. HAB-PROFESSOR says:

    thats our lineup?…we are dead.

  2. Drive_For_25 says:

It will be funny to see how Kostopolous holds up on a line with those two. I think Sergei might be a step or two ahead of both of those guys.

  3. Steve C. says:

it’s funny ’cause we’re missing 3 players for tomorrow yet that lineup is as good as any that Guy put on the ice last year.

  4. Hockey11 says:

Right on man, can you say Ribiero? Look for Ryder to be a 25+ goal man again with a solid Boston team. Carbo is not a communicator.

  5. Hockey11 says:

Chipper is centreman and Dandy is a winger/D, they are not interchangeable parts. MaxP is a young player who will benefit from big minutes as a pro, he is coming out of NCAA 32 games a season, he will learn how to be a pro and then he will be up with the Big Club soon.

  6. Les-Habitants says:

Agreed. Hey, just look at his AHL stats: not too shabby.

Besides, I like the grit on that line. Tom the Bomb can crash and bang with the best of them, and he can stand in front of the net and get those goals from close in.

It’s a fine selection, and while obviously not as ideal as having Higgins in the lineup, it’ll do.

Anyone says this lineup looks weak, doesn’t know what they’re talking about. You can’t go from having 3 scoring lines, lose one player, and be weak. Look at Toronto, that’s a weak forward crop.

Man, gotta love Hab fans…the season hasn’t even started yet, and there is panic in the air…must be the financial market.

  7. von says:

I like how you didn’t even reply to my point about Latendresse not being a top 6 forward.

    Please, Lats a whipping boy?

You must be confused. Everybody knows Ryder was the whipping boy. Back to back 30 goal seasons, has 1 bad year and they couldn’t have got ridden of him any faster. Shameful how he was treated by the Canadiens.

If there’s anybody who’ll come back to bite the Habs, it’ll be him.

“Obviously it would be great, but they don’t really hang conference titles in this rink. They raise Stanley Cup banners.” – Carey Price

  8. REB says:

Yep, let’s poll the other GMs by putting Lats on waivers…and see how fast all the GM’s swoop in to snap him up. He wouldn’t be on waivers for 15 minutes, and then you’d bitch and moan when he came back in several years and killed the Habs, just like Leclair used to do.

He’s 20 yrs old, starting his 3rd year, scored 16 goals last year while he was supposed to be suffering from the ‘sophomore jinx’ and had his ice time reduced…he improved over his 1st year!

I understand that every team needs a whipping boy, but why it’s Lats puzzles me…no, wait, I GOT IT! It’s because his name is Gui but he doesn’t have long flowing hair.

  9. Bred says:

It’s kind of funny that you guys are all bashing Tom the Bomb… You were all singing a much different tune when he was our leading scorer in the playoffs =/

  10. likehoy says:

  11. von says:

Tanguay and Koivu aren’t goal scorers?

No hatred bro, just common sense… Latendresse is not a top 6 forward… Maybe TSN should poll the GM’s about that.

  12. Number31 says:

C’mon guys, give me a break! Kostopoulos is a hard working, smart, equally defensive minded player who never gives up and tries as hard as he’s capable of to win, even if it means bowling through walls… Paired with Sergei and Lang? That sounds mighty interesting to me!

In fact it all doesn’t sounds so bad. Besides, it’s only the first game of the season.

  14. says:

So can we all shut up and watch for a bit, yes i think kostopolous is a bad choice, but i think we can trust Guy over all, because honestly this site is becoming unpleasant to read when all i’m seeing is this junk.

Seriously wait a game or two and see what happens.

i’ll add as a footnote that it’s possible to criticize without calling people stupid or implying that these lines is the worst decision over made.

  15. G-Man says:

Crazy fans, like they’re obsessed or something. Think it’s the Centenary Flu? 🙂

2008/09 is the season of the Habs

  16. G-Man says:

Why the grumpy face? Carbo got your lines? 🙂

2008/09 is the season of the Habs

  17. G-Man says:

Aw, Timo! I thought Carbo read and referenced us as the source of all hockey knowledge… no? 🙂

2008/09 is the season of the Habs

  18. G-Man says:

That’s a big AMEN to that, LizardKing!

2008/09 is the season of the Habs

  19. likehoy says:

looks weak? cause kostopoulos is on the 3rd line?? we still have our top two lines intact + lang and sergei

we’d have to put someone on the IR to keep max…and none of the injuries are long term.

  20. twocents says:

Congratulations to all of you who have Markov in hockey pools that award more points for goals than assists, you just got a big bonus.

  21. swim_ny says:

Max being sent down when clearly there was a top 3 line spot for him makes no sense now.

    This lineup looks weak.

  22. slamtherimtim says:

max got sent down so Kostopoulos could play the third line
chips got sent down so Dandenault could play the fourth line
webber got sent down so breezer could play on the third d pair
not happy about any of this

  23. Barts says:

Kostopolous on the third line, grumble grumble… where’s Max goddamit.

  24. habs R my team says:

I still don’t think we have enough depth. If we have 1 injury(Higgins), and forced to play a 4th liner(kostopoulos), on the 3rd line, then we have no depth. Why isn’t Pacioretty, a 3rd liner, not being brought up to play until Higgins come back? And obviously we have no depth on D, when you’re forced to play Brisecrap!

  25. Habby67 says:

Gets Kost off the third line and put him on the 4th and please get rid of Dandy for christ sakes…

  26. HabsColor says:

Seems either of us should change the logo. 🙂

  27. Fer_hab says:

Ahh you know the habs are back when Timo starts the Carbo bashing.

  28. Devin_G7 says:

Odd but expected that some fans are bashing the team before the habs even step on the ice for their first game. It will take me a few losses before i can come up with some kind of critisism for the coach and team… the habs really have some harsh fans

  29. Chorske says:

LOL, and so it begins- they haven’t even lost a game yet! 😉

  30. Chorske says:

How sweet are those first three lines eh.

  31. Chorske says:

Max got sent down so he could gain experience and confidence at the pro level playing 20+ minutes per game.

Chips got sent down because we are stacked at centre- for a change- and because he had a less than stellar preseason.

Webber got sent down because while his shot is awesome, he needs to work on hi defense.

In their stead we have three strong veterans. I fail to see the problem. Those kids will be back the second the injuries start piling up.

  32. likehoy says:

streit would normally be in that third line spot where kostopoulos is.

  33. RH says:

….oh, and Robert Lang wasn’t there either..

  34. RH says:

This same line-up, minus Tanguay of course, lead the Habs to a 1st place finish, in the conference last season. Who’s complaining about what now? Keep in mind, folks, that there are still 82 games left on the schedule and there will be many line-up changes along the way. There is also the probability of injuries that will, or may, occur allowing for a quick phone call to Hamilton to call a Max….or D’Agostini. Hopefully, they’re ready if, and when, they’re are called upon.

  35. Hot_Pie says:

This instance to play guys like Dandenault will be the doom of this team.

I’m slightly exaggerating, but for the life of me I don’t understand why a guy like Dandenault is playing over a guy like Chipchura or even Max Pac…both who are clearly superior to him.

  36. von says:

Sergei and Latendresse should be switched… Would make a lot more sense.

“Obviously it would be great, but they don’t really hang conference titles in this rink. They raise Stanley Cup banners.” – Carey Price

  37. LizardKing1967 says:

Come on everyone. So many of you screamed bloody murder for all kinds of moves Carbo made last season. And if I remember right, he almost won coach of the year and we finished FIRST in the CONFERANCE. So leave him alone, let him do his job, and wait till we lose 5 in a row before opening your traps.

  38. Kovalev4captain says:

And people say the media is bad, come on guys, this is our team, lets give them a chance to gel. Look at our first two lines, these guys are going to rack up the points. Defense is covered with our top 4, so what if breezer is playing, there are much worse defencemen around the league than him. And let us not forget about Carey, he will win us games singlehandedly. Have confidence in Carbo, he knows a heck of a lot more about hockey then anyone of us…

    Go Habs Go!

  39. fun police says:

not our best lineup. with the talent bursting at the seams, it seems odd that a defensemen is playing up front and a fourth line plumber at best is playing with high skilled guys like lang and kost. pax, d’agostini, maxwell…i’m sure that any one of these can fill in for a game or two while higgins heals.

  40. Hockey11 says:

Chips is a center WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!!!

  41. Hockey11 says:

Who is your 7th Dman? Breezer? If you want to play games with Breezer on D over Dandy, you don’t want to win. The org had all summer to move Dandy but they kept him as this team had no injuries last season and they will need vets to play substantial amounts of games at time.

  42. fun police says:

i agree, why not recall pax for a few games, for crying out loud. i’m sure lang and sergei must be shaking their heads. i like carbo, but these are the times when i shake my head. another thing, the leafs will play for their stanley cup on saturday against us, so carbo, if you are reading this, please get our best lineup together for that game.

  43. Hockey11 says:

I remember Timo the Dandy basher from last year. Nobody wanted Breezer last year and no one wants him now, he is not tradable. He was Carbos roomate and Carbo wants his buddy to get 1000 games and then coach as Carb did not pick any of the assistants. Breezer should not have been resigned, Dandy was under contract and is a better player and is tradeable. Dandy should be playing in Frankies spot.

I don’t know what Dandy did to you but why don’t you focus on the players that play big minutes and could not score 5 v 5 last season, that is why we sucked in the playoffs. Worrying about 7-8 D mens and fourth liners is ridiculous and disrespectful to a veteran that has done everything this team has asked oh him including playing left D with a rookie in the preseason and looking damn good doing it too!

  44. linp says:

I am repeating what I have posted a few days ago.

“I really hope that this time, the media and the fans show more patience with the team. The second and the third line will need at least 10 games to establish the chemistry.”

Also, let’s give Carbo a chance to show us how he manages the team.

  45. Habby67 says:

Once Higgins and Georges are back they can knock Begin and Dandy out of the lineup…

  46. Jim M says:

I guess Gainey thought enough of Carbonneau’s infinite wisdom to extend his contract by 3 years. Maybe you think Gainey doesn’t know what he’s doing either.

  47. HabFab says:

Chips has not been sent anywhere yet.The Cube has been put on the injured reserve so there was roster space.
