Well, not real hockey.
But it’s the Canadiens vs. a bona-fide NHL opponent, the Dallas Stars.
And they’re playing at the Bell Centre, with referees and everything.
And for fans who haven’t braved bridge traffic to watch the Habs scrimmage in Brossard, this will be the first look at Erik Cole and Alexei Yemelin.
• Red Fisher is not a big fan of the pre-season
• Dave Stubbs on the slimmed-down Jaro Spacek
• Pat Hickey on Brock Trotter and Max Pacioretty
• Sean Gordon on Carey Price
• Stu Hackel on Max-Pac and other concussion victims
• Elliotte Friedman’s 30 Thoughts (including questions on Markov contract)
• François Gagnon on Josh Gorges
Today’s video is a tribute to Carey Price:

Shiram, HF72, G-man and others were talking about souvlaki for tonight.
I went to Diogenese on Decarie today, and THEY’RE CLOSED!
It’s now some Mediterranean place. We tried it anyhow and it was Gross!
My two hockey buddies and I are throwing a Sea Bass on the BBQ, some Guinness, and HOCKEY!!!
GO HABS! I’m so fed up of these withdrawals.
Everyone else has said what has to be said. Let’s all enjoy!
I was so excited to finally have hockey to watch, but now? Why bother?
Toronto beat Ottawa 4-2 last night. It’s all over. The Leafs are winning the Stanley Cup, obviously.
Ken Dryden For NHL Commissioner
They’d better start planning their parade. Oh wait, isn’t that an annual ritual?
Don’t know if this video has been posted already but either way it’s a great video ti get you pumped for the season!

Really appreciate this, thank you!
Thanks, now I just need to find a job where I don’t start work at 3:30 PST (ie. right before every game starts!)
Stars GM Nieuwendyk has announced that Yemelin will be deciding the first round of cuts in Dallas’ Training camp this evening
Great post!
Did anyone hear about the Carolina panthers football player who just got a torn ACL for the third time in 2 years and he’s out for the season!!!. I HOPE MARKY ISN’T RUSHED!!
Two questions of utmost important.
1) Is the game being broadcast on TV tonight?
2) Can I stream it online?
Yours Sincerely,
Habs Fan lost in NYC.
1. yes on RDS.
2. yes check below for a post by Mikey_39 asking the same question.
If you don’t grok it, drokk it!
I’m in VA and the NHL-US network isn’t showing it, Center Ice Games haven’t started yet, and can’t get a free stream. Someone below mentioned a link that you have to pay for. So basically unless we want to pay for it, we’re screwed down here until the Tamp Bay game (1st game NHL-US network is showing.
Im hoping someone else will have a free link at some point in the day. If not, is Team990 broadcasting the game? At least we can hear the game.
Edit: Just answered my own question. Yes 990 will have the game.
Chrisadiens and HabFan10912, one of the few father son tandems on HIO.
I always stream on justin tv…search exnordic in google and it should come up. I don’t think you have to pay, but you can if you want for about 10$/month. i’ve done it from the caribbean so in NY it should work great.
you can try this link, but they have a few domains:
http://fr.justin.tv/exou09
i hope it works!
Cool. I will give it a shot. Thanks.
Chrisadiens and HabFan10912, one of the few father son tandems on HIO.
Thanks!
exou is the iron man of streaming habs games. that’s like his 9th channel, they always attempt to shut down his streaming.

http://fr.justin.tv/exou09 is working as of now, so hopefully there are more than 9 lives for this stream. its been amazing over the past 2 years from my experience.
go habs!
enjoy the game everyone
I don’t follow Red Fisher’s argument. He jumps around, suggesting that the pre-season games are a risk to the players, then suggesting that the owners use them as a cash cow at the expense of the players (um, we fans LOVE the preseason too, Red: gives us a chance to evaluate “la releve”). And then he brings up Crosby- uh, what? Crosby wasn’t hurt in a preseason game, but in an outdoor game (which should be exhibition, but don’t get me started). And then he brings up the incredible level of conditioning of the modern NHLer come September– which should invalidate his concerns regarding player “rust” and safety.
I tend to think the only risk lies in young players gunning for a roster spot overextending themselves, or going for unnecessarily big hits to impress their coaches.
I totally disagree with Red too,,I believe that he is trying to start an argument for argument’s sake. Senior “A” teams play pre-season games for crying out loud and trust me it is not to rake in the dough at the gates. How many practices do you want to have before the games start Red? What is not exciting about seeing prospects in game situations and giving the fans a little glimpse into the future? And as for the NHLPA wanting to lessen the amount of exhibition games, although that may be true to a certain extent, it is not at the level that Mr. Fisher perceives it to be. This is the time of year for members of this union and future members of the union to showcase their talents to earn a paycheck. The pre-season is necessary and should be embraced. I have been to pre-season games at the Bell Centre when I used to live in Mtl and I can tell you that the atmosphere is worth the non-discounted price of the ticket.
There’s an inherent risk in any hockey game, but it’s no secret that preseason isn’t exactly played at full speed. That said, players need it to get their timing.
http://twitter.com/andrewberkshire
I certainly don’t think that the veterans play at full speed- but the young prospects are gunning for roster jobs or for a shot at a mid-season callup… and their performances in these games are part of those decisions. So those kids are playing at the proverbial cliched 110%, don’t you think?
105% maybe.
http://twitter.com/andrewberkshire
That’s what I like about you, Andrew. You leave nothing on the keyboard.
You know who always gives 110%? Paul Gaustad.
http://twitter.com/andrewberkshire
oooooh how cute! Dorske and Douche sharing such intelligent opinions. Just can’t keep up!
________________________________________________
This team can use a 6’4″ fourth line centre full of grit and aggression. Paul Gaustad anyone?
As a season ticket holder (Damn, I love using that phrase – for one I never thought I’d ever say it and for another it sounds SO damned pompous!) I absolute ABHOR, that’s right ABHOR pre-season games. Namely because there are FIVE in the Bell Centre, which as a season ticket holder I am forced to buy. Poopers to that!
I don’t think they need so many. This is one point I hope the NHLPA fights for in the next CBA and wins. Heck, and another two games to the regular season. Make the junior rule a 12 game eval instead of 10. Whatever, we just don’t need five home pre-season games. That’s a bit much.

GO HABS GO!
Speaking of risks (and I know it’s off the hockey topic), did anyone see Vick get concussed on the weekend, by his own player none the less?
A freak accident. And the contact was not that hard.
Just goes to prove what Randy Teiman said today on AM990, it can happen to anyone. No matter how much preparation! So forget the pre-season, let’s get the real thing going!
….chompin’ at the bit.
Combos for tonight-
Price- Lawson
Cole -Pleks – Cammmy
Ak – Palushaj – Willsie
Trotter – Enqvist – Blunden
Shultz – Berger – Masse
Tinordi-Weber
Gill- Diaz
Woywitka-Yemelin
Stay Thirsty My Friends!
Has to be a first. There will be 3 Swiss players playing for the Habs tonight.
Stay Thirsty My Friends!
Funny detail, on the Habs’ official website, all of those players are listed as being born in the Czech Republic;
e.g. Yannick Weber, Morges, CHE
Edit: My bad, apparently Switzerland’s official name is Confoederatio Helvetica, hence CHE.
I believe the E at the end of their 3-letter ISO Country Code may come from eidgenossenschaft, the German word for confederation.
Interesting! Very very interesting!
Stay Thirsty My Friends!
Are these your proposed lines, or have they been listed officially somewhere?
Official!
Stay Thirsty My Friends!
So the D pairings are alphabetical ( Diaz-Gill, Tinordi-Weber, Woywitka-Yemelin). Is the coaching staff just being lazy here? Or is it a coincidence?
JM humour
Stay Thirsty My Friends!
Interesting defense pairings tonight — Gill and Tinordi, Diaz and Weber
It can’t be, at least I hope not. Gill and Tinordi can only play LD, and Weber and Diaz can only play RD.
It’s preseason man. Probably want Tinordi to watch and learn from Gill.
- Honestly yours
Oh how I missed you les boys! Let the season begin!
“We just have to cowboy up and do it” – Carey Price
Interesting article from Red. Guess not being a professional athlete, he doesn’t understand the importance of being in a game situation for a hockey player’s timing. Us having 6 games in 7 nights is probably the reason we are keeping nearly 60 guys. I say if the fans are willing to pay to see it, give it to them.
I’m sure he understands it – he just doesn’t want to see it.
I understand why babies eat pureed food. I don’t really want to look at it.
Red is one angry SOB. I don’t think he likes anything. Heck he probably doesn’t like hockey or even the habs.
I know a lot of people that get crankier as they get older. I guess he’s one of them.
Morning skate had Gill- Diaz
Tinordi- Weber
Yemelin-Woywitka
Diaz-weber Powerplay
Stay Thirsty My Friends!
I was watching TSN this morning, and maybe i did not look hard enough but i heard Gomez is lower body. thats all they said, that and our markov troubles. Any info on it?
TSN did say Gomez has a lower body injury this morning. Saw it before work. Unfortunately, they didn’t elaborate on it any more than that, or give a time frame as to when he can be expected to play.
- Honestly yours
This just in! Red Fisher does not like something.
I actually have not read the article, so I shouldn’t be so quick with the quip.
Finally! Well, almost.
When a preseason “tilt” (more like a slight lean if you ask me) is touted as The Battle of Ontario you know this league is in trouble. Nothing like watching two overweight, punch drunk hasbeens duke it out for the title of Bottom Dweller. Rumour has it city’s cleanup of confetti and empty beer cans on Yonge Street has severely strained their budget. They may have to (horrors!) cancel their real Cup parade permits before the season actually starts.
Our own opening preseason between the Habs and Stars promises to be, well, not much actually. I know we’re excited and all but let’s bear in mind these games are played for nothing more than gate receipts to help keep the poor and the needy afloat in these rough economic times. I refer, of course, to the so called sun belt teams. Without this cash some of those franchises would be trolling the hockey hotbeds of Regina, Moose Jaw and Halifax looking for deep pocket investors *cough* suckers and politicians *cough* to pony up untold hundreds of millions for bigass arenas in the most unlikely of places. Ya, OK you’re from one of those towns and you’re sure an NHL franchise would work there? So which category of investor do you fall in to?
And one final thought. While it’s all well and fine to have Shanny as the new sheriff this does nothing to improve the overall sad state of officiating in the league. Go back over the past 4 or 5 years and one of the most frustrating elements to the game has been the deplorable lack of consistent reffing. This critical flaw has to be corrected.
***Subbang Baby!!!***
I’d love to see Price bring back those brown pads once in awhile. Love that look.
http://twitter.com/andrewberkshire
Yes it looked good, like throwback equipment. But I’ve heard too many reports that wearing the white pads and gloves blend in with the boards and ice, making it deceiving to the shooters as to how much room they actually have to shoot at. If I have a choice between him looking good, and him having a competitive advantage, I’ll take the competitive advantage.
As long as we never ever see red pads or barber poles ever again.
The red pads don’t bother me, but I like the look of the white pads better. The worst pads I’ve ever seen were Pascal Leclaire’s from his first year with the Sens. http://www.zimbio.com/pictures/ADxKo6thPDv/Ottawa+Senators+v+New+York+Rangers/ylrNtKmweAy/Pascal+Leclaire
http://twitter.com/andrewberkshire
That is some ugly shiz right there. But the vertical stripes are very slimming, so I’ll give him that.
I need some help! I’m stuck in the states so I don’t have RDS now. Where can I watch the pre-season games. I’ll be subscribing to the NHL package for the rest of the season but they don’t have pre-season, and I need my fix!
Mikey, I travel a lot here in the states and I use one of these three places to watch games while on the road.
http://www.atdhenet.tv/ (may have the game)
http://www.vodkasports.tv/ (may have the game)
http://www5.hockeystreams.com/ (has all the game tonight. Has a cost, but in the scheme of things it’s pretty cheap).
ONCE A HAB, FOREVER A HAB!!!
Awesome thank you! Atdhe has ben seized by the government though. I’ll give the others a try
Ah, ok, I use Hockey Streams most (http://www5.hockeystreams.com/) as it had the best quality and are now going to be supporting Android as well.
ONCE A HAB, FOREVER A HAB!!!
Only the .net domain, not the .tv. Although it doesn’t look like they have the game for tonight up, it might be a place to check out once the season starts if you are without RDS.
Getting frustrated everytime I click on a link to a Gazette artice the “subscribe now” pops up, and I can’t read the article. Same thing happened yesterday for the Subban Twitter article. Someone the other day said they did something to their settings

Tonight I will watch hockey with some buddies, while eating a chicken slouvaki, and it will be awesome.
If you don’t grok it, drokk it!
Why no poutine?
The torch be yours to hold it high!
Have not found any decent place to order poutine from that will deliver it to my place.
Besides the chicken slouvaki is nicer on my stomach, and it’s a kind of tradition around here.
If you don’t grok it, drokk it!
Maybe we need a souvlaki discussion …
I usually order from Village Grec, or Arahova, but I’m not an expert on the subject.
If you don’t grok it, drokk it!
Villa du Souvlaki, on Sherbrooke W. in NDG, just east of Decarie. 1 word: awesome!
Where are your faves people?

Neither is a patch on Arahova, however.

Hey now! I know this started as a Hockey discussion (at least the word hockey was in the post) but it has deviated from Hockey.

Ha… sarcasm… carry on.
Shiram, you in the Plateau or near the Ghetto? Alto’s delivers 24h and their poutine is AMAZING.
I’m in Villeray actually.
What’s this Alto’s you talk about?
If you don’t grok it, drokk it!
Village Grec (Jean-Talon) and Marathon Souvlaki (Blue Bonnets) are the best in the city, Arahova (downtown) use to be good but since they started experimenting with their pita bread and using that really thick and crumbly pita i stopped going YUCCCKK!!!

I see what you did there.
Well looks like I will be heading to Cogeco Cable today after work and adding RDS to my cable bill. Wonder which of my wife’s nature channels I will be deleting from my package to add in RDS lol.
Sorry dude, you can’t subscribe to RDS as a single channel in Southern Ontario with Cogeco.
You will have to buy the Telefranco pack in order to get RDS with 4 other useless channels.
Your wife will have the last laugh.
I suggest you buy a dish or subscribe online to RDS to watch the games.
“We will win the Cup one day only with ? in the nets “
Be careful brother, I delete my wife’s shows off the PVR and she gets po’d big time and cancels some of mine. I would be careful about cancelling channels. Girls always know and they always get you back.
lol
Good advice from both, I think Cogeco may let me add as a single channel. Cheers
“With referees and everything?” I can do without the refs after the sh$t job they did last year. Colin Campbell won his son a cup at the expense of the league’s integrity. Hopefully it’ll change this year. Bring on the south-stars let’s play hockey!
H-O-C-K-E-Y! Yes!
The Habs have a TEAM that can & will do some damage this season. They were one OT goal from taking out the Stanley Cup Champs ( I just threw up in my mouth).
They showed that they could get by with out Markov & Gorges last season to a certain extent, so when the two are back into the line up full time they have to be a better team for it.
With Max back & Cammi (seems to be a man on a mission this season) they will be a better team.
Now if Gomez & AK46 can get it going that will be a huge bonus.
Oh yeah & that new guy Cole, he can score that timely goal when needed (he sure has killed the Habs in the past) this team can be unstoppable…
I can’t wait till the reg season.
LET THE GAME BEGIN ….
Anyone know if I can stream RDS in the US, seems to be the only way I could watch the game tonight!
You should be able to stream it on firstrowsports.com or justin.tv
There are no stupid questions, just stupid people.
Leafs have signed Luke Schenn to a 5 year $3.6M deal. I guess they think he will keep improving but that is a lot of money for a RFA who is a stay at home defenceman with zero offence and a career -17 rating.
By comparison number one draft pick Erik Johnson has played roughly the same number of games, with slightly better numbers, and is on only $2.6M.
Zach Bogosian was drafted one spot ahead of Schenn, and has almost identical numbers. He signed for $2.5M.
Marc Staal is a much better defenceman than Schenn, is 3 years older and wears the A for the Rangers. He is signed for only a little more ($3.97M).
But you can’t put a $$$ value on Burke’s most important intangible. Truculence!
I agree it was a bit pricy, however, he is a very physical dman, led all dmen in hits last year, and quickly had to become the number 1 defender of all the dman on that team. Still probably too much to pay, but he will be a solid dman for years to come for them. Will be interesting to watch the leafs as there are some young defenders who could take Mike Komisarek’s position away from him. Toronto could end up with Komo and Jeff Finger on the Marlies, that would be almost 8million playing AHL hockey this year.
I have to disagree, 3.6M for 5 years is fair imo. Johnson and Bog signed only 2 year deals, so its tougher to compare, but Schenn>Bogsosian. I hate the leafs just but I’d take Schenn on my team any day. The guy lead all NHL D-men in hits and is 21 years old with 3 years NHL experience.
ya but none of those guys can boast about being third in the league in giveaways like the Lukester!!!!
If he wouldn’t play for the laffs no one would know of him. Totally Overated!
Stay Thirsty My Friends!
nhl stats says he was first in the league in giveaways with 95.
Komi jr.
Stay Thirsty My Friends!
ya , I just read that, I’ll try to find where it says he was 3rd.
K, luckster lead all d-men, but was 3rd overall.
Ilya Kovalchuk 104
joe Thornton 98
lukester 95.
http://www.nhl.com/ice/playerstats.htm?fetchKey=20112ALLSASALL&sort=giveaways&viewName=rtssPlayerStats
Its actually a great deal for the Leafs. He could have signed a 2 year deal and cashed in huge at the end of it. PG took that approach with Price – a cheaper 2 year deal that will cost the Habs BIG TIME next summer. Carey is worth it – so I’m not sweating it – but the strategy employed by Burke is to take a calculated risk that Shenn will be better than his $3.6 by year 3 of the contract. The Leafs over pay by a bit in the short term to control his cost over the final 3 years of his contract. Wouldn’t you over pay by a little to guarantee PK Subban remains a Hab for the next half a decade? I’d give him $3.6M for 5 tomorrow if I was PG.
It?’s freaking Schenn! He’s not that good!
Stay Thirsty My Friends!
Team should be well motivated this year. The veterans like Gio and Cammy seem to always be motivated, but Cammy seems especially ready for this year.
Gomez as we have pointed out endlessly has this year to show if he will stay with Montreal or risk going to a team he doesn’t want to be on or worse play in Hamilton.
Spacek, Gill, Moen, AK, are veterans playing for next contract.
PK, Price playing for their next big contract.
All of this on top of them buying into being a winning team in Montreal.
Perhaps more importantly, JM is coaching for his next contract. He needs to get all the players to buy into his system or he won’t be coaching in Montreal next year.
Hopefully all these different intangibles make for a special year.
JM is actually on a 4 year deal, so he’s signed through next season.
http://twitter.com/andrewberkshire
Thanks Andrew, don’t know why I thought this was his last year. However, even with 1 year remaining, I think this will be a pivotal year for him as Coach of this team going forward. Your thoughts?
I think every year is a pivotal year for every coach because they have zero job security. Martin is a competitive guy.
http://twitter.com/andrewberkshire
So I guess he won’t try hard ’til next year.
***Subbang Baby!!!***
hehe, yah kind of blew my theory out the water there eh punkster? I do believe he is on the watch. PG has let him mould the roster with players he wants, shipping out players that didn’t fit his style. If he doesn’t take this team deep this year, I think PG reassesses that position.
I don’t agree HiB. Unless there is a complete implosion, fist fights in the room, binge drinking on off days and a series mysterious benchings of top players PG and BG will stick with JM through the 4 years. And maybe beyond.
***Subbang Baby!!!***
glad to see price has settled in, bought a house, no more fighting for number one spot with anyone, its his team.losing by a goal to the cup champs should make us hungry with something to prove this year. DROP THE PUCK !!
GO HABS GO
Great to see Spacek come to camp fighting fit.
No passengers. I love it.

“He is a choker when games matter most. He will cost the Habs another run in the playoffs. He has done ZERO for the Habs. I would rather have Rick Mercer in net than him! Besides that, he reminds me of Roberto Luongo, another overrated Canadian goalie who chokes when his team needs him most. Nope, the Habs will go nowhere with this dude. Glad it is the last year of his contract. Maybe he can get traded… Let’s get Halak back from the Blues!”
Poor Poor Halak fans, he’s the next Roman Cechmanek, and with Jake Allen and Ben Bishop Halak will be trade bait in the near future.

Kind of like how Halak choked against the flyers. Remember when he came waaay out of his net and tripped hamrlik causing a goal? Yeah.
And the way he couldn’t even score one goal on Leighton in three games was embarrassing.
Good riddance.

Careful what you wish for. He may go off on a tangent about the structural integrity of the Bell Centre and 19 guys sent from the NHL head office as a conspiracy.
———————–
GO HABS GO! 2011-12 is our year!
ya, let’s get a long, rambling, non-sensical view of the team… yay
We have a “Sam THE Man” poster here. He has been giving us daily updates from Brossard. Don’t believe him to be the same, he seems like a level headed type and don’t remember any Halakian heresy posting there
Nothing new there…..I went back HIO archives to 1970 and found this nugget:
October 2, 1970 from samthemacman,SR.
I cannot believe that Pollock let the future of this team, Tony Esposito go for nothing in return!! The Canadiens management truly have no idea what they are doing.
The younger Esposito had 15 shutouts in his rookie season with Chicago! Don’t tell me the Habitants couldn’t have used a few of those shutouts this past season while the Bruins were going on to win the Cup!
Sure, the Habs drafted goalie Ray Martyniuk this year, we all know he will be a superstar one day, but be realistic, he won’t be ready for 2 or 3 seasons!
And this upcoming season? Who will be in nets? Rogie Vachon? His best days are behind him…
Phil Myre? (He’s too young)…..And that Dryden kid??? Forget it….he will never amount to anything in this league. A primadonna college boy. Plus he’s what? 6-4? Wayyyy too tall for a hockey player!
Remember these words a few years from now when Tony O is winning all kinds of Cups with the BlackHawks dynasty, and Dryden is riding the buses and trains in the minors again!!
On another subject, did any of you get that new Bread album? It’s Outtasite!!!!!
SR = good touch sir!!
I had a friend from Montreal that back in the 70′s sounded like Timo today. Even the season we lost only 8 games, he b!tched all year. He moved to Calgary in the late 70′s and had a son named Michael. When I first read Timo, actually asked him if he was the son of my old friend.
Ray Martyniuk ? Who was he?
If you are serious, he was our first 1st round draft pick back in the day AND our first 1st round bust!! Yes, even Pollack made mistakes.
I didn’t think any of those guys still existed. I still wish Jaro the best. think he still has 3 years left on his contract, but may have to agree on the Bishop Allen situation in St. Louis.
Guy Lafleur’s 60th birthday today. I thought that might get a mention. He was pretty good on a pretty good team.
Guy LaFleur was “pretty good” on a “pretty good” team is understating things for sure. I will edit it to this:
Guy LaFleur was a premier player of his era playing on the Habs Dynasty of the 70′s.
I was born in 65, so I was fortunate my father taught me right and pushed the Habs on me. It was easy to be a fan of this team in the 70′s. Feel bad for the kids born in the late 80′s (not being old enough to enjoy the 93 Cup) or the 90′s, but this organization is on the right track. The cup is coming back home, we have an incredible youth development going on right now.
Fans of Lafleur can rightfully claim that he owns the title of being the best player on the best hockey team of all time, the 76-77 Habs. There have been a lot of great players in the league, but that title is something special.
+1 and then some. He was the man on the team. Always will be my favourite player. Still sore about the way he got treated in his last years with the habs.
Don’t know if it was posted here, Melnick in the afternoon is raffling off 2 tickets to the October 6th Habs vs Leafs opener in Toronto. The seats are section-107 I believe.
The prize includes first class Via Rail, 3 nights hotel including supper.

It’s for a great cause, and you get to see our Habs in action!!
Drop. The. Puck. Already!
I can’t wait to see Yemelin, Tinordi on the back end. We have been missing this toughness since Believe or not Komisarek.
It will be awesome to see the players battle for the 6th/7th spot on D.
What I can’t wait to see is Cole’s explosiveness!
Go! HABS! Go!
5 days until I get to see the boys play live in HFX.
agreed, I always liked Komi..
Have to agree with Red Fisher, not a fan of the pre-season, it’s all hype.
We all know the roster is set even before this pre-season hoopla.
But I am excited for this,

Couldn’t sleep last night. Feel like a kid on Christmas morning. Get to watch the Habs play hockey tonight. Won’t feel like this again until Oct. 6th.
I’ll be there! I can’t wait! Hurley’s from 2ish until 5ish then off to the game a bit early to poke around the Bell Centre.
Go Habs Go!!
