Another signing

Louis Leblanc, Alex Henry and Alexandre Picard.

Pierre Gauther is gonna have writer’s cramp.

The latest is a depth signing. Picard will be on a two-way contract – probably for no more than the $850,000 he made last season in Ottawa and Carolina – providing an extra D body until Andrei Markov is ready.

And HIO video scout Jarred Friedman checks in with a Picard package.

Still missin’ the point man. I (as in me, just me, not the world at large here, not speaking for anyone else) don’t care about stats or what the fair market value is in today’s NHL. I simply don’t care. What I care about is that the Montreal Canadiens win more games than they lose in the regular season and the playoffs.

No use trying to debate salaries with me K-man, I don’t care. These kids get paid an obscene amount of cake to push a little rubber thingy around a frozen pond. The essence of the game hasn’t really changed, just the dumba** salaries and the ludicrous dependence on stats. Hence my $1.5M one year view. No it’s not the 50’s, 60’s or 70’s. But the root of the game, the parts that captured me since I was a kid, haven’t changed; skate, shoot, score. And win more than you lose.

Serious regression or the fact he was no longer on the first line and he only played 70 games.

Setoguchi has proven he can score 30 goals and scored 20 goals last season in what you refer to as a large regression.

Pouliot has NEVER scored 20 goals in the NHL and has displayed suspect mental and physical toughness in the latter part of the season and especially the playoffs.

Setoguchi is deserving of any raise and I would argue is a bargain at under 2 million.

Absolutely can, pretty much all young players on entry level, or second contracts get a sizable raise when they sign their next contract.

Actually it seems alot of people on here think playoff performance IS how contracts should be determined. Forget about the 82 games over 7 months, base everything on x amount of games over a month or 2. Oh and only recent playoff performances aswell. Like how Louongo and Fluery are choke artist and Halak is clutch. Forget the fact that Fluery the year PIT lost to DET put up 1.97 GAA and a .933 sv%, then won the cup the next year, but he’s a choke artist, because of this year. Forget that Luongo in his first playoff appearance had a 1.71 GAA and a .941 sv% in 12 games, he’s a choke artist, because of one bad playoff. Everyone always puts way to much emphasis on the most recent playoff performances, heck last year Talbot was a god on this site. It’s a joke.

  39. Mark C says:

How can Niemi be worth almost twice that number?

  40. Chuck says:

    1. Niemi didn’t win his team the Cup. More than anything else, he was just along for the ride. In the playoffs he had a .910 SV% and a 2.63GAA. Very replaceable stats.

    2. Price isn’t “some loser”.

  41. K-hab25 says:

If Price played in CHI, he’d be the one with a cup and all the haters on here would be whining about BG and PG never getting us a goalie as good as Price. By the way how is it Price doesn’t deserve more than Niemi, because he doesn’t have a cup. Yet Halak, Rinne, Leightenon and Hiller, 0 cups between them, all got payed more recently. I doubt what an overrated, overage rookie gets, is really going to effect what Price gets.

  42. Mark C says:

He was on a 27 goal and 49 point pace during the playoffs, just an absolute force. Contracts are not solely given based on playoff performance, all past and projected performances are figured into the equation.      via Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune

According to multiple reports Saturday, an arbitrator has awarded Blackhawks goaltender Antti Niemi $2.75 million for next season.

That figure appears low enough that the Hawks could work under the NHL’s salary cap to retain the netminder or there is still a possibility general manager Stan Bowman could trade him.

The Hawks have 48 hours to decide whether to accept the award or walk away from it, allowing Niemi to become a free agent. They could also accept the award and then trade Niemi and sign a veteran free agent at a lower salary.

It’s believed Niemi asked for more than $3 million for the one-year contract during Thursday’s arbitration hearing in Toronto and that the Hawks were seeking a deal of around $2 million.

  67. TripleX says:

  74. B says:

Halak, Hiller and Rinne established themselves as the number one goalies on their teams. Lehtonen was the number one, but missed all but 12 games last season due to injury. Leclair is the only one of that bunch who, like Price, played but lost his job as the number one goalie on his team. (Leclair did have some injuries last season, but that may have been a blessing in disguise for Ottawa). I am not sure if Leclair is really the best example to be using.

Some other comparisons for next season:
Smith in Tampa $2.2M (Ellis $1.5M), Niittymaki in San Jose $2M, Anderson in Colorado $1.812M. Leighton in Philly $1.55M (Boucher $.925M).

There are many ways to look for comparables, I suspect Price’s agent is pushing a similar view to yours while Gauthier may not entirely share that same perspective.

  81. toinz says:

For a guy who will only play a few games barring other injuries, this is a value signing by Gauthier

  82. Danno says:

Good move. Decent D man decent price, if under $1M. Big, young and capable.

“Hey Richard, two minutes for looking so good!”

  83. nightmare_49 says:

Alexandre ‘4 Ply’ Picard, what has PG got against sandpaper. Picard has been dropped by many teams in the NHL for the same reason, he knows it and does nothing about it.

Lack of agression doesn’t help his already weak defensive tools so what we have picked up is another Matt Carle with a little more size that he doesn’t use and shoots left.

The two way contract makes this feasible but i was hoping for an inexpensive ‘D’ with a little jam who isn’t careless for our serviceable D man spot.

  84. avatar_58 says:

Another D-man? So should Obyrne, Weber and Carle start looking at teams they’d like to be traded to? It’s pretty clear our young d-men won’t be given any ice time, and I hope PK isn’t one of the men left in the AHL.

  85. toinz says:

    dunno dude,

Picards contract is 2 ways and o’byrne’s is not. That makes Picard the odd man out once Markov is healthy

  86. Les Habitants says:

There is no way Subban is in the AHL this season.

I do see your point about needing to give our young d-men a chance. Weber and Carle can’t remain prospects forever. You have to eventually give them a chance to prove themselves in the NHL or move on.

The last time the leafs won the cup it was still just a bowl!!

  87. toinz says:

just another thing, o’byrne is older than Picard

  88. showey47 says:

My apologies bugs, thats what happens when you grow up playing hockey and going to school on the side instead of the other way around.

  89. sidhu says:

I realize this is a depth move, but I like this signing a lot — Picard was a high pick, and put up respectable numbers for Ottawa last season — he put up some points, played 19 mins a game, played both PP and PK, and had more hits and block shots than games played.

We definitely need some depth given the injury to Marky and the uncertainty as to whether someone from the A (e.g., Weber, Carle) can step up reliably in place of Marky.  Plus there is always the risk or potential of other injuries.

Overall I wish we made some moves to address our lack of size, but as a depth move goes, this gets two thumbs up in my book.

For what it’s worth, I like the Henry signing too — he’s a big guy and was captain of the ‘Dogs.  I’m sure he adds some grit and leadership to the team and we could always use that in our organization.

  90. avatar_58 says:

I don’t know. I’m just bitchy because I really wanted Moore back and all this money thrown around for 4th liners and depth players…..could have been better spent is all.

Also please stop signing people before Price.

  91. Favorite Son says:

I don’t think Picard offers that much more certainty than Weber or Carle…

By the way, your avatar is awesome.

  92. avatar_58 says:

Let’s make a bet – Obyrne is benched, Picard is played mid season. Count on it.

  93. Puck Bard says:

Can’t take that bet cause I agree with you.

  94. avatar_58 says:

This is what bothers me. If they are only going to be playing 5th, 6th anyway why not let our youth step up? I mean really if they aren’t going to get a chance why not trade them for picks then? I mean really….I don’t understand the point of building one’s farm and then never using them.

  95. Favorite Son says:

It seems to me that JM doesn’t like to take risks with prospects…which worries me quite a bit with regards to Subban and O’Byrne. And what if Eller makes some mistakes? Damn…

  98. Favorite Son says:

  99. TommyB says:

I think it definitely does influence the Price camp, but not to their benefit.  It does, however, put things in perspective for the Price negotiationg team.  Price has no Stanley Cup ring.

  100. Harditya_CareyPrice says:

Even though I like Price, I hope we sign him to a short term contract worth around 2-2.3 M per year. Anything more than that shouldn’t be considered bizarre, but undeserving. He needs to play consistently in order to earn a good long term contract (and I don’t mean 17 years LOL, around 4-6 years).

  101. JIMVINNY says:

Yeah, I wonder why those teams gave up on him so quickly. Maybe he got caught in the numbers game, still being young and developing his game. At the very least I think he will be a solid upgrade on Metropolit.

  107. K-hab25 says:

Chipchura was a first round pick, just sayin.

  108. K-hab25 says:

Nashville got SK for him, they didn’t exactly give up on him. A future top 6, for a bottom 6 player.

  113. Storm Man says:

And would have had to have 4.75 mil a year to play here with the tax deal in Quebec. Funny how some forget about that.

Tell me this….WHAT IN THE HELL DID PRICE DO LAST YEAR TO GET A RAISE OR EARN #1? I can’t believe Anglo Hab fans and the fact they can’t connect the dots!

  116. Favorite Son says:

What did he do? Nothing. I agree. But trading Halak automatically makes him #1, no? And I did say max 2.5…if it were me I’d offer him $2.0M per year for 2 yrs.

And who you calling anglo? You don’t even know me!

  119. K-hab25 says:

Plekanec got a raise last year, not because of the crap year he was coming off, but what he accomplished the entire previous contract and what they felt he could accomplish. I actually do agree that 90% of the Price haters on this site live in Montreal. Where, like sheep, they alllow the media to dictate there opinions of players. The rest of us form judgements from what see watching Habs games, not our local tabloids.

  120. Storm Man says:

  122. K-hab25 says:

What has Kari Leightonen (sp), Pekka Rinne or Jonas Hiller done, that Price hasn’t? Last time I checked they all recently signed for more than 2.5 mill. Why is it a team accomplishment should instantly make an average guy, great to you people. He is no better than any of those 3 goalies I listed, he just played on a better team.

  123. adam76 says:

Its not a french / english thing, its a stop the fracking puck thing.

  124. madcap_habsfan says:

thank you! c’est exactement ca!  :)

  125. Favorite Son says:

I agree that Niemi is an average goalie, but that doesn’t change the fact that he has a Stanley Cup on his resume now. And I think what he got in arbitration is fair. So anything between 2.0-2.5 for Price is reasonable, in my opinion. I don’t know what Lehtonen, Rinne and Hiller are making, but if it is more than $2.5, then their GMs are stupid.

So, you would give Price more than 2.5? You’re a very generous person.

  126. K-hab25 says:

I sure would and more if the term was longer. As I’ve stated before, if you give him a 3 year 9 mill$ deal and he doesn’t pan out this year, you could easily get someone to take a 23 year old with his abilities at 3 mill per.

  127. Harditya_CareyPrice says:

    Lehtonen – 3.55 M cap hit

    Rinne - 3.4 M cap hit

    Hiller – 4.5 M cap hit

  128. K-hab25 says:

Pascal Leclaire – 3.6 mill cap hit. Pascal remind me of a slovakian goaltender with average #’s until his contract year. Where he played outstanding and parlayed it into a big contract. We’ll see if like Pascal, he falls back into being an average goaltender again.

  130. Bob Dobbs says:

Perhaps PG’s logic is that even if Picard is only needed for a small number of games, there’s the upside possibility that he could be a revelation. Maybe he’ll really like it here and be extra motivated, maybe he will fit our style of play extremely well, etc. Then PG could keep him in the lineup and have in him a player who’s real value is superior to what he’s being paid. Plus with a two-way contract there’s not really any risk.

  131. Jazz Man says:

Good points. Picard may turn out to be better than expected, at a real bargain price.

  132. K-hab25 says:

Neither does Plekanec or Cammy!! Ohh I forgot, that’s the ignorant way “some” people judge goalies, on team success. You take Niemi, Fleury, Giguerre, Osgood and Ward, I’ll take Price, Rask, Miller, Lundquvist and Luongo.

  133. TommyB says:

You don’t have a clue what I’m saying, do you?  You just jump on my post as if I am one of the anti-Price, without thinking about what I actually said.  By the way, I am a Price supporter.  If Price and his agent were waiting for the Niemi contract to put some kind of perspective on what Price should get, then they now have the answer.  And it won’t be as much as Niemi.  It’s a joke that you put Price in the same category as Miller, Lundqvist, and Luongo.  Price may very well surpass all of them some day, but today ain’t that day.  At the NHL level, Carey hasn’t done squat yet.   Rask??? Really???  You have him in with those guys?

  134. K-hab25 says:

Look Tommy, you da man. I’ve always liked reading your posts and yes I know you’re a Price supporter. My point was, all the guys I said you could have, won cups recently. All the guys I said I would take, have never won cups. In other words, winning the cup doesn’t mean you’re a top notch goalie, it means your team was. So I don’t think it matters as much as you do on how much they’re worth. I sincerely apologize if I offended you Tommy, not what I intended.

PG should sign Brian McGratton – need someone to toughen up this team.  if management doesn’t respect our skilled guys enough to protect them – why would oppoenents?  Been a fan for a very long time and pretty tired of them being the pansies of the league – how bout being harder to play against?  how bout being to respond to physical play.  everyone agrees the BGL experiment was a disaster but he was injured and well past his prime – good intentions by Gainey – bad execution.  I would take a couple of Nystrom, Prust, Rypien type players as well but entering the season with Moen as the toughest guy on this team is a huge mistake.

  140. homerbowen says:

I agree 100% with your post. While I don’t care for goons we need someone to counter balance Burke’s goons as well as the Flyers and Rangers. Sad that it comes to this.
