Another signing

Louis Leblanc, Alex Henry and Alexandre Picard.

Pierre Gauther is gonna have writer’s cramp.

The latest is a depth signing. Picard will be on a two-way contract – probably for no more than the $850,000 he made last season in Ottawa and Carolina – providing an extra D body until Andrei Markov is ready.

And HIO video scout Jarred Friedman checks in with a Picard package.

Annti Niemi awarded $2.75 million.

Devin Setoguchi signs for $1.8 million.

lets be happy making the playoffs and we showed last year anything can happen…but over 82 games this team does not have the talent to be fighting for top team status in the nhl.. maybe in 2-3 years…we will not even be in the top 10 in points..

  3. arcosenate says:

    Now that’s funny!

  4. punkster says:

Still missin’ the point man. I (as in me, just me, not the world at large here, not speaking for anyone else) don’t care about stats or what the fair market value is in today’s NHL. I simply don’t care. What I care about is that the Montreal Canadiens win more games than they lose in the regular season and the playoffs.

No use trying to debate salaries with me K-man, I don’t care. These kids get paid an obscene amount of cake to push a little rubber thingy around a frozen pond. The essence of the game hasn’t really changed, just the dumba** salaries and the ludicrous dependence on stats. Hence my $1.5M one year view. No it’s not the 50’s, 60’s or 70’s. But the root of the game, the parts that captured me since I was a kid, haven’t changed; skate, shoot, score. And win more than you lose.

  5. TripleX says:

Serious regression or the fact he was no longer on the first line and he only played 70 games.

Setoguchi has proven he can score 30 goals and scored 20 goals last season in what you refer to as a large regression.

Pouliot has NEVER scored 20 goals in the NHL and has displayed suspect mental and physical toughness in the latter part of the season and especially the playoffs.

Setoguchi is deserving of any raise and I would argue is a bargain at under 2 million.

People in pro sports get paid multi-million dollar contracts, like it or not. The guys in Prices class, young # 1’s, under 25, on there second deals, generally are getting in between 2.75 mill and 3.75 mill a year.

  18. Bugs says:

6 months? The season is six and a half months long. Our last two weeks was a 2 and 3 record… That’s when we came together?

Gonna lose Markov for another 2 and a half months and Halak ain’t gonna be seein the net. Ergo: we WON’T do as well as squeezin into 8th, sorry to say. Unless the Priceberg and Eller are all they’re cracked up to be. But uhh…yyyeah.

  20. Mark C says:

Absolutely can, pretty much all young players on entry level, or second contracts get a sizable raise when they sign their next contract.

Setoguchi statistics suffered a large regression last season, yet he still got a raise of over $500,000 (this is counting his EL bonuses, his increase in salary would will be over 1 million).

  24. K-hab25 says:

Actually it seems alot of people on here think playoff performance IS how contracts should be determined. Forget about the 82 games over 7 months, base everything on x amount of games over a month or 2. Oh and only recent playoff performances aswell. Like how Louongo and Fluery are choke artist and Halak is clutch. Forget the fact that Fluery the year PIT lost to DET put up 1.97 GAA and a .933 sv%, then won the cup the next year, but he’s a choke artist, because of this year. Forget that Luongo in his first playoff appearance had a 1.71 GAA and a .941 sv% in 12 games, he’s a choke artist, because of one bad playoff. Everyone always puts way to much emphasis on the most recent playoff performances, heck last year Talbot was a god on this site. It’s a joke.

If you’ve followed my comments over the weeks about Price you’d understand what I just said. It’s simply my opinion of what he is worth. I do not reside in a fantasy K-hab25. I don’t play fake video games or build fantasy teams. I reside in a crystal clear reality that is very aware of what Price will likely be paid in this crazy, f’d up NHL salary structure and Cap system this dumba** bunch of owners and their henchman Buttboy have set up for themselves. Fantasy? The fantasy is fans getting all worked up over mulit-million dollar salary differences based on stats, GAs, save percentage, SOs and on and on. FFS the kid’s 23 and he’s going to make more f’n money next year than you and me combined, no matter what he finally signs for, for stoppng a piece of rubber, something of which he has failed to prove he can do on a consistent basis.

  37. Mark C says:

    That was my point Chuck.

  38. showey47 says:

Despite all the hawks on ice success and playoff home dates the team still lost money this year and are raising ticket prices about 20% for next season. Rumour has it they had to move money from other wirtz family owned businesses to pay the bills/payroll.

  39. Ian Cobb says:

    SORRY Parkinsons!

  40. Mark C says:

How can Niemi be worth almost twice that number?

  41. Chuck says:

    1. Niemi didn’t win his team the Cup. More than anything else, he was just along for the ride. In the playoffs he had a .910 SV% and a 2.63GAA. Very replaceable stats.

    2. Price isn’t “some loser”.

  42. K-hab25 says:

If Price played in CHI, he’d be the one with a cup and all the haters on here would be whining about BG and PG never getting us a goalie as good as Price. By the way how is it Price doesn’t deserve more than Niemi, because he doesn’t have a cup. Yet Halak, Rinne, Leightenon and Hiller, 0 cups between them, all got payed more recently. I doubt what an overrated, overage rookie gets, is really going to effect what Price gets.

  43. Mark C says:

He was on a 27 goal and 49 point pace during the playoffs, just an absolute force. Contracts are not solely given based on playoff performance, all past and projected performances are figured into the equation. Devin has a better and more proven track record that is why he signed for almost $.5M more than Benny. Both contracts are fair and are representative of the market. Just don’t understand why you have to hate every move this management team makes.

  44. punkster says:

Yep, $1.5M, on a one year deal, that’s me.

Cut the crap kid and show us what you’re worth.

  45. habs fan from stonyplain says:

now mr. Pierre how about you put down the carrot sticks and sign carey to around 2.8 mil a year for 3 years and be done with it. Great signing with picard.

  46. Ian Cobb says:

Last year it took 6 months for us to get our feet under us as we struggled with chemistry and injuries. This year this team is going to come out of the gate just a flying.

We won’t be fighting for a play off spot this year. We will be fighting for top spot all season. We now have a club worthy of our colours. They will keep us on the edge of our seats instead of our heads in our hands.

  48. Mark C says:

K-hab, Price and Niemi (4 years older) had the exact same SV % last season, yet one won his team the cup and the other is some loser, who some people here feel isn’t worth more than $1.5M.  It’s just unbelievable.

  49. TripleX says:

In the 15 games the Sharks played in the playoffs Setoguchi scored 9 points and was a consistent force on the ice.

  52. K-hab25 says:

Very little IMO. Niemi is a 26 year old rookie, with 39 starts. His “team” did win the cup, which is why he’s even getting 2.75. Hard to compare him and a 22 year old with over 130 starts. I do think the final amount will be similar, Niemi, because his teams accomplishment and Price based on his accomplishments over his 3 years as a pro.

via Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune

According to multiple reports Saturday, an arbitrator has awarded Blackhawks goaltender Antti Niemi $2.75 million for next season.

That figure appears low enough that the Hawks could work under the NHL’s salary cap to retain the netminder or there is still a possibility general manager Stan Bowman could trade him.

The Hawks have 48 hours to decide whether to accept the award or walk away from it, allowing Niemi to become a free agent. They could also accept the award and then trade Niemi and sign a veteran free agent at a lower salary.

It’s believed Niemi asked for more than $3 million for the one-year contract during Thursday’s arbitration hearing in Toronto and that the Hawks were seeking a deal of around $2 million.

  68. TripleX says:

Devon Setoguchi signs for 1.8 million/year not sure of the length.  When you see what Pouliot is getting or OMG AK it is a great deal.
