Annakin Slayd’s new song makes a strong statement

Montreal recording artist Annakin Slayd, whose “Feels Like ’93” song and video captured the imagination of Canadiens fans in 2008 (and was subsequently updated), has a new anthem the 2011 playoffs, “MTL Stand Up.”

Tapping into the spirit in Montreal in the aftermath of the Zdeno Chara hit that knocked Max Pacioretty out for the season and the controversial decision by the NHL not to suspend Chara, it makes a plea to “take back the game and the Cup at the same time,” containing a strong sentiment about the sport and player safety in the lyrics:

“A unified city has spoken,
’cause we don’t want to see another young man broken.
This is a movement and you don’t have a chance to stop it,
so I bust my Pacioretty shirt and rock it.
If that’s a hockey play then hockey must change.
Wanna to be proud of our sport, not ashamed.
It ain’t about intent, it ain’t about blame,
We’re doin’ this for Max, We’re doin’ it for the game.”

And later, “It’s easy to hate on the ones who speak up. It’s easy to hate the one with all the Cups.”

It also pays tribute to the uniqueness of Habs fans, the team’s tradition and its great heroes and calls for a dedication of this playoff run to Pacioretty, “25 for 67.”

The song features Helena Marie on vocals and Franko Beaulieu on Guitar. The beat was produced by Mitch Album (whose name seems like a clever allusion to the Detroit writer, Mitch Albom) and the video was directed by Annakin Slayd and Jean Michel Simard. It can be purchased from iTunes.

Already listened to it a good 5-6 times now. Really like this one.

I feel like Pacioretty might be a bit embarrassed about the whole “25 for 67” part, because he is, by all accounts, going to be OK.

And this is, by all accounts, a team sport with 20 odd guys to cheer for for 100 odd reasons.

    But it’s still awesome.

Annakin also did a great Montreal Expos music/video tribute as well……..

Yeah I have to agree, the rapping parts are great, the lyrics as well but it is really cheesy when she sings the chorus.

  7. 24moreCups, 16 April, 2011
