Complete mornings/afternoons off for the Canadiens and Boston Bruins today, with a rather busy evening in store for both.
News updates: Habs coach Jacques Martin will announce his lineup only after the warmup. David Desharnais is out for a month by all accounts with a strained ACL. Martin will consider James Wisniewski, Paul Mara, Yannick Weber and Benoit Pouliot.
Bruins’ Milan Lucic will not receive additional punishment for his hit of Jaroslav Spacek in Game 6 on Tuesday. Lucic will be in the lineup tonight.
The Habs had Martin available to the media at the team hotel in Boston, along with forward Travis Moen and defenceman Brent Sopel, both playoff veterans and Stanley Cup champions. Video of them is offered here, Martin in separate English and French clips.
The Bruins will make head coach Claude Julien available for a few comments shortly after 4 pm at the TD Garden. We’ll provide highlights of that in text form.

There are people within the Boston organization that are embedded in the upper echelon, so little will go against the Boston Bruins. I am not surprised. If jack all was done for Chara, this Spacek thing ranks up there with nothing.
All the broons fans in the office were upset by the fact that Lucic was NOT suspended, given the way he is playing.
Game 7 between the Booins and the Habs… Can it get much better than this… Interesting stat for Big Z about lifetime game 7s: 0-8. Hopefully that bodes well for us tonight. I’m also pleased that Lucy (Damnit… Lucic) will be in the Booins lineup tonight, considering how poorly he’s played to date in this series, and since getting his 30th of the year at the end of march. Some Kind of way of eliminating bad hits from the game? . I don’t understand the fact if the player does not get injured it is not as bad and if does get injured then it’s more subject to supplementary discipline. It’s complete garbage, it could just be the way the player turned slightly or how he fell its not only the impact.
Once again NHL and Colin Campbell have done an amazing job thanks a lot boys, especially the officiating it’s been above average.

The extent of the injury doesn’t even come into play as witnessed with the Max Pacioretty incident. The NHL is corrupt and biased towards certain teams which is why there is no justice or consistency in their rulings.

Hey Canadiensnation, you couldnt have explained it better, if a dirty hit from Lucy doesnt trigger a penalty what does? A clean head shot? Well probably not even if you are a dirty Bruin. Chara Got off and now Lucy due to one thing – Colin Campbell! How Can it be accepted or even legal to have clear influence on the penalties on the team of your own son!? In Any other business This would simply be unheard off! The only honorable thing to do would be to let Campbell resign or let the 4th liner son play in the AHL. With This set up, no one Can have confidence in any decicions made by the NHL.
Here’s hoping for another boring win!
My only concern going into tonight’s game will be if the referees decide to even the score a little in favour of the Bruins after they were on the short end of two 5-on-3′s last night.
Also very happy to see the Canucks through to the second round. I’ve watched the past 3 games and have felt that Chris Higgins has been one of the best players on the ice: playing great hockey on the checking line, getting his chances (and hitting the posts on most of them…hey, it IS Chris Higgins after all!) and combining with Hansen and Lapierre to give the Canucks some great push-back shifts when they needed them.
I’d like to see Pouliot get another shot…he still has more potential to score than Pyatt or most of the other offensive stiffs that Montreal has on their third and fourth lines, and getting some contributions from the role guys is going to be crucial to the Habs if Plekanec and Gomez continue to struggle offensively.
I’ll say it again, JM here is your big opportunity to make it right. Let’s dazzle them with our speed. Roll four lines and have “catch us if you can” hockey: (1) Cammy- Pleks-AK; (2) Gio-Gomez-Moen; (3/4) White-Eller-Pyatt; (3/4) Benny-Halpern-Darche. A guy can dream can’t he.

Surprised at how poor the Sedins are. They have really not stepped up.
The Sedins were definitely struggling. In this case, I think we have to give some credit to the opposition. David Bolland seems to really get into their heads and thrash around.
Still, combining for 12 points in 7 games isn’t terrible…it merely doesn’t meet their own lofty standards. It doesn’t get easier in the next round…the Predators are well coached and defensively sound. The Sedins are going to need to step up if the Canucks want to get to the finals, because Detroit is looking great and San Jose is still a great team.
I’m actually pulling for a San Jose – Vancouver Campbell Conference final because one of those perennial chokers has to win the series, right?
I always enjoy your posts, Chris. Today isn’t any different. But thats largely attributed to your everlasting fondness of Chris Higgins (i too am guilty of it). I wish we could go back in time and re-define Higgins’ role with the Canadiens. Being a first round pick and flirting with a 30 goal season led some- Higgins included- to believe he was a top two line player. Contrarily, when used in the right circumstances (3rd line role, PK), Higgins can be very effective. In the Hawks series, he was hitting and shooting and logging reputable minutes (16, on average). His hands are a little on the rough side, but his footspeed and defensive awareness are strenghts. Its unfortunate the way things transpired.
I also think Benny deserves a second shot. We need offence from those bottom two lines and with Desharnais out, and Eller struggling with injury, a surprising goal from Benny is just what we need in a crucial game. We saw those type of back-breaking goals from Lapierre and Moore last year and that is what is required to win Game 7′s. Contributions from all. We can’t count on the power play forever.
I was very pleased to see both Higgins and Lapierre (who I still admit to not liking as a player) picked up by the Canucks at the deadline. Those were potentially great moves: Higgins gets to play the PERFECT role for him, a third line checker who does not carry a huge amount of pressure to score goals, while Lapierre gets to play the fourth-line energy role that he was always suited for.
Looking around the league at most of the ex-Habs, you can see the benefits of finding the right fit. Higgins and Lapierre are obvious, but Koivu had a good close to the regular season (5 G and 27 points in his last 37 games) before having yet another strong playoff (7 points in 6 games) while playing the second-line centre role that he was always more suited for (especially now that he is in his mid-30′s). Sergei is doing well in Nashville while playing with skilled players on the top two lines, closing out the season with 7 goals and 15 points in an 11 game scoring run.
This isn’t yet another knock against the Habs for failing to develop their players properly, but more me pointing out that some failures are more poor fits. With the right opportunity and fit, guys like Darche and Gorges, who were given up on as career journeymen by their previous teams, have become key contributors to the Habs.
We always tend to focus on the “names” when discussing transactions, but it is just as often these “role” players that are the homeruns.
You want to replace Pyatt, who’s been a great defensive specialist for us all season with Pouliot? hahahahahahahahaha What drugs are you on?
I’ve never been crazy about Pyatt. I just don’t see the usefulness that Jacques Martin does. But he’s the coach, and he generally gets results.

Refs won’t be a concern, I think. They ALREADY “evened the score”, retroactively, by refusing Gio’s goal. We’re good.
Normally don’t give two squirts about Couver, cuz their anthem singer is lazy and their announcer is ultra-lame. “Repeat after me: ‘Peeoooooo!’ Yes, that is the extent of my crowd-rousing cleverness! That childish caveman gibberish is what separates us from the rest!” Gosh, I cringe just thinkin about it.
And the Couver crowd, omg, “Luuuu…” every time Luongo makes a save. Nothing pleases me more than when they start goin “Luuuu…” and there’s a quick rebound for a goal, and then it’s “Lu…uhhh…(gulp)” Makes’em look stupid, imo. They should quit that, but hey, it’s their team, right?
That being said, it’s not right that Lu should be humiliated so; happy he pulled it out. Even though I still think he’s overrated.
And if my boy gets another shot, it’ll either be next series in an early game (if we make it), or next year…maybe.
He may be subject to less indulgence from the coaching staff, but he’s not made himself look good in the limited chances he got either. If he had scored in the last 25 or been remotely dangerous the first few games this series, he woulda been given at least a MEASURE of benefit of the doubt.
Truth is though: we can win without him. Sad as that may be for me.

No question that Pouliot has stunk out the joint in some of his opportunities.
But like Andrei Kostitsyn and Chris Higgins before them both, he is a guy that gets yanked out of his ideal role as soon as he DOES start to produce.
I think we all know by now that Pouliot is unlikely to become a legitimate top-6 forward in Montreal. But when he was playing with Halpern and Darche early in the season, he was great: he had a couple of defensively responsible players backing up his own shortcoming in that regard, while also getting to hog the puck, which is when Pouliot is at his most impressive and effective. The kid can skate, he can dangle and he can drive the net…what he doesn’t seem too apt at is using his linemates. Halpern, a smart veteran, and Darche, a worker bee, make good partners because they don’t need the puck to be effective.
Instead, he has been played with Eller (who also needs the puck to maximize his effectiveness), Desharnais (who is most effective with the puck) or Plekanec/Gomez (both of whom like to have the puck). I just don’t believe those are good matches for Pouliot.
Good analyisis of Benny. He is best with the puck but the last half of the season he’s been unloading it much too quickly for fear of someone taking it away from him. I do think that he is good at using his linemates. he has excellent vision and a deft hand with the pass. As I recall he last assist was a beauty to White. I also think that he will be a top 6 one day, but sadly with JM in charge, maybe not in Montreal. Benny, make sure you shut the door behind you if you ever get out of the dog house.
Like AK, ok, but not Higgy. Higgy has no compass, can’t score; talent level nowhere near other two.
Not “Halpern’n'Darche”; JUST Darche. Consider how good he was when he played with Dezzy…and Darche.
Agree about all his qualities, but sadly, when NOT with Darche, we can’t help but come to the conclusion that he doesn’t have the “Will to win at all costs”, that which he had when Darche injected him with some.
As for who he plays with where and how long, I say what I always say: if you got game, you bring game, even whilst “handicapped”, as it were.
Put Crosby on the 4th with a pylon and a water-sprinkler for 6 minutes and I bet he gets a pt somehow. Cuz he got game.
I love my boy’s talent, but he’s given me no game I can use as supportive arguments in defending him recently.

I for one hated the Chara hit as I though it was a deliberate attempt to injure by pushing a helpless/out of balace player into a part of the playing area that would cause great bodily harm.
The Lucic hit was from 3/4 behind and was nearly from the side. I believe he was trying to make a physical play and miscalculated his and the defenseless players position. It’s hard to change your mind in a split second when you are going to hit somebody.
As to all the things you mention, remember that the Bruins are Colin Campbell’s son’s team and that as we have discovered from his leeked e-mail communications, Campbell is a very partial and biased head of dicipline. There you have it.
But he can’t do anything because his son is in the team. Conflict of interest. That is why someone else looks at the matters when something happens with his son.
So….I want to be positive but they win when I’m not. Gotta get rid of those warm fuzzy “anything can happen” thoughts
