Souray and I worked together for the entire 2004-05 NHL lockout season on his Postcard From Sweden, a weekly Gazette-published diary of his experiences in the Swedish Elite League, playing for Farjestad BK.

On Feb. 3, he drew an automatic one-game suspension for fighting when he mopped the ice with hulking Djurgardens IF Stockholm defenceman and future Toronto Maple Leaf Steffan Kronwall, who had sucker-punched diminutive Farjestad forward Marcel Jenni in the goal-crease scrum. The ban earned Souray a few extra days at home in Los Angeles during a 12-day break in the schedule.

It’s not the most politically correct video, but what the heck. Here’s that fight, which begins in front of Souray’s then-Canadiens goaltending teammate José Theodore.

Let the video fully load (it might take a minute), and check out the expressions of Souray’s teammates on the bench, who might never have seen a hockey fight in their lives. The Swedish commentary adds to the flavour; apparently “standing ovation” can’t be translated.
