With the Canadiens starting a stretch of six games in 11 nights on Tuesday with a Bell Centre visit by the Edmonton Oilers, The Gazette’s Dave Stubbs, Pat Hickey and Mike Boone sat down with Kevin Mio to discuss the season so far.

Among the topics discussed were each writer’s biggest surprises so far this season, the play of P.K. Subban and Max Pacioretty, the emergence of Lars Eller at centre and a few other topics.

The trio also got into an interesting discussion about wrestling that is not to be missed.

New faces like Erik Cole and Peter Budaj will be in attendance, as will several players who missed large parts of last season with injuries. Max Pacioretty and Josh Gorges appear ready to go, but there are questions surrounding the health of defenceman Andreo Markov.

The Canadiens and Bruins meet in the postseason for the 33rd time in their respective histories starting on Thursday in Boston.

The rivalry heated up this season with Zdeno Chara’s hit on Max Pacioretty, as well as a pair of wild games in Boston.

But none of that matters as the Eastern Conference quarterfinal kicks off on Thursday, a series that has plenty of promise.

The Gazette’s Pat Hickey, Dave Stubbs, Mike Boone and Kevin Mio break down the series and give their predictions of who they think will win the series in a playoff edition of the Puckcast.

The Canadiens might be riding a five-game winning streak, but all the talk today is about Zdeno Chara’s hit on Max Pacioretty on Tuesday night. Pacioretty’s head was driven into the glass partition that separates the team benches and the forward was taken off the ice on a stretcher. Chara was ejected from the game and has a hearing today with the NHL to determine what, if any, supplementary discipline will be handed out.

Very low-tech: no bells, no whistles, no moderator Kevin Mio with his fancy mixing board, a hum from the Bell Centre’s Jacques Beauchamp Media Lounge overhead lights that we couldn’t turn off (and we tried) and recorded at 11:40 pm following the Canadiens’ 4-3 win over the Boston Bruins. (We knew it was time to end it when Boone started to get up to leave.)

What you get here is the year-end hot-stove babbling Puckcast from The Gazette’s Pat Hickey, Mike Boone and Dave Stubbs. Mostly Boone and Stubbs listening to Hickey – but he’s the beat man, so that’s as it should be – discussing the Habs win, Subban’s hit, Cammalleri’s fight (!), the callup of Max Pacioretty, the upcoming seven-game road trip, and backup goalie Alex Auld (in 1974, didn’t The Three Degrees record a hit “When Will I See You Again”?)

It is a month into the NHL’s regular season and the Canadiens are in first place in the Northeast Division and survived the first part of a tough week on Tuesday with a 2-0 win over the Vancouver Canucks. The next test is Thursday night in Boston against a Bruins team that is four points behind the Habs, but have four games in hand heading into action on Wednesday night.

The Canadiens have a new general manager in Pierre Gauthier after Bob Gainey announced his resignation on Monday. Gainey will remain with the team as a special adviser to Gauthier, however. Gainey took over as GM of the team in the summer of 2003, the team’s 15th GM. In his close to seven seasons, the team has made the playoffs four times, but also changed coaches twice and underwent a massive makeover last summer.

Since our last podcast, there has been no shortage of news surrounding the Canadiens. On top of their up and down play, the Canadiens told Georges Laraque to stay home, saw teammates get in each others faces at practice and lost their leading goal scorer when Michael Cammalleri went down with a knee injury last weekend. As we speak, the Canadiens sit seventh in the Eastern Conference, but their hold on a playoff spot is tenuous and the situation changes every single night.

Today, Pat Hickey, Mike Boone and Kevin Mio discuss the injury to Cammalleri, the goaltending situation and the team’s inconsistent play of late, among other things.

And just as the team was getting healthy, the Kostitsyn brothers have both been shelved with injuries, dealing a blow to the team’s offence.

The Canadiens started a tough month of December on Tuesday night by dropping the ball in a 3-0 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs, the team’s third straight loss. The good news is that some of the team’s injured players have started returning, but the results are still not very positive on the ice. This week finally marks the end of the team’s centennial celebrations with the game on Friday night against the Boston Bruins.

It’s been a tough week for the Canadiens, with losses against Pittsburgh and Chicago before beating the Maple Leafs despite blowing a late two-goal lead. On Tuesday night, they lost to Atlanta in a sloppy game that saw numerous defensive breakdowns for the Canadiens. It doesn’t get any easier for the Habs, who play Boston on Thursday and welcome Tampa Bay to Montreal on Saturday.

After a summer of change, the Canadiens are back on the ice, with the rookies this week and the veterans reporting for duty as of Sunday for on-ice workouts.
