Veteran defenceman Patrice Brisebois will have only one exhibition game under his belt when the season starts on Wednesday, and while he knows it’s not an ideal situation, there was nothing he could do about it. Head coach Guy Carbonneau has said Brisebois will be paired with Roman Hamrlik on the team’s second defensive unit and that is a surprising move, writes The Gazette’s Pat Hickey.

“We’ll have to see how he plays against Ottawa, but we’ll also have two practices after that and Patrice has a lot of experience,” Carbonneau said.

Brisebois said he hasn’t made any fundamental changes in his style, which is long on finesse and skill. But he added that his experience has made him a smarter player.

“I’ve learned not to force the play,” Brisebois said. “Sometimes, it’s better to bang the puck off the boards and clear the zone. You don’t need to make a pass on the tape. You look at guys like (Nicklas) Lidstrom or (Scott) Niedermayer, and that’s the way they play.”
