Brisebois says he has learned from his mistakes

Veteran defenceman Patrice Brisebois will have only one exhibition game under his belt when the season starts on Wednesday, and while he knows it’s not an ideal situation, there was nothing he could do about it. Head coach Guy Carbonneau has said Brisebois will be paired with Roman Hamrlik on the team’s second defensive unit and that is a surprising move, writes The Gazette’s Pat Hickey.

“We’ll have to see how he plays against Ottawa, but we’ll also have two practices after that and Patrice has a lot of experience,” Carbonneau said.

Brisebois said he hasn’t made any fundamental changes in his style, which is long on finesse and skill. But he added that his experience has made him a smarter player.

“I’ve learned not to force the play,” Brisebois said. “Sometimes, it’s better to bang the puck off the boards and clear the zone.You don’t need to make a pass on the tape. You look at guys like (Nicklas) Lidstrom or (Scott) Niedermayer, and that’s the way they play.”

Well, almost. At 9:50 a.m., defenceman Patrice Brisebois is taking shots and skating on Bell Centre ice with the Canadiens strength and conditioning coordinator, Scott Livingston. Brisebois has not yet been in uniform this exhibition season, sidelined by a groin injury.

Patrice Brisebois failed his physical exam with the Canadiens this morning because of a groin injury. That will keep him out action for at least the first week of training camp. According to some reports, he has been dealing with the injury ever since he began skating with other NHLers about a month ago.

Veteran defenceman Patrice Brisebois could be back in Montreal next season.

According to the Journal de Montréal, the Canadiens have offered Brisebois a one-year deal worth $700,000. The 36 year old played the last two seasons with the Colorado Avalanche.

According to the newspaper, Brisebois and Habs GM Bob Gainey were seen eating together at a restaurant during the last few days.
