What’s new? 3-2 … in a shootout

And Canadiens win it.

Kozlov: Miss

A, Kostitsyn: Goal

Hossa: Save by Huet

Koivu: GOAL!!!!

Cristobal Huet – after another puckhandling episode during the third period – is great in OT and brilliant in the shootout.

I take back all the things I wrote about his mother. How did he maintain concentration and make all those saves with goat’s horns on his mask?

Guy Carbonneau wanted eight points on the road trip. Canadiens got six.

Mission accomplished.

  1. Naila Jinnah says:

Do we fine him for making saves then?

  2. Naila Jinnah says:

    Finnish as in Saku?

  3. Naila Jinnah says:

More like what I heard… Pierre talking to his producer before the visuals/scoreboard was out for the commercial break!
Which means that either someone wasn’t counting down, or he can’t hear them.

  4. Deano says:

Nope that is not how it works

  5. The Teacher says:

I’d take Perry in a heartbeat…even less than that.

  6. Habs-Kat says:

    Pathetic powerplay…

  7. Habs-Kat says:

    I’d like a goal, pretty please :)

  8. wd40 says:

i was just going to say, how was that NOT a penalty.. when…

  9. The Teacher says:

I think we are playing a good game so far.

    1. Solid defense
    2. Koivu showed up (again)
    3. Sergei is playing smart, so smart
    4. Komi playing well, getting the puck out through the middle now I notice instead of always on boards on PK.

  10. Ed says:

And he is good at it.

  11. linp says:

Smolinski can’t react fast. He can get out-trick very easily

  12. lennon says:

my view on Huet playing the puck- fine him 1000.00 every time he touches it.

  13. Rugger says:

We get your point – you don’t like Koivu

  14. Ed says:

Mark Recchi a penalty in the O zone, and on the PP to boot.

  15. Kevin says:

How good is Kovalev this season? He plays on the PK.

  16. the_vipah says:

Boy I hope we don’t pick up Hossa..what a pussy.

  17. linp says:

    Doesn’t look good

  18. Kevin says:

How many times has Boone written that Higgins is snakebit this season? Maybe Higgins just does not have that finnish… yet…

  19. wd40 says:

  20. wd40 says:

i didn’t notice… what did you see that irked you? :)

  21. Naila Jinnah says:

The only way Huet will get his confidence back is by playing and earning a win. It’s the right decision to play him, even though we’d love to see Halak in nets.

Plus, if they played Halak and we lost due to goaltending, the outrage would blow off the Bell Center roof!

  22. Naila Jinnah says:

So I’m a perfectionist… But I get really ticked off at those RDS production errors!

  23. Cable Guy says:

well it’s not as if Huet has been winning us games. We’ve been scoring more goals this year. Huet looks at best average this year. IF we go to a shootout tonight we lose.

  24. JB_15 says:

I am pretty sure I had peewee games that generated bigger crowds than that of phillips arena tonight.

    What a crap market.

  25. wd40 says:

great start! keep it up boys.

  26. saskhab says:

Are we sure the Habs scouts were there for Calgary and not for Minnesota?

  27. Rugger says:

Wouldn’t it really be only half that for the balance of this year, since we have paid Ryder half already and Calgary has paid Tanguay half?

  28. wd40 says:

Hamrlik worked out so well, they’re going back to the trough for a second drink? Though that wasn’t a trade… i guess we’ll see.

  29. Deano says:

I calculate the Cap Hit at $2.425M:

    AT = 5.375
    MR = 2.950

  30. wd40 says:

i guess the obvious answer is, as the backup, wait. :) seriously though, when the time comes, i’m sure he’ll put in a good effort.

  31. arcosenate says:

Calgary rumours eh? Interesting, I can’t imagine how their roster fits our needs and vice-versa. Sounds like a bad match to me. It can’t be Lombardi, he’s their fastest player as it is. It better not be Conroy, God help us. Anyway, Montreal 5 Atlanta 2.

  32. Naila Jinnah says:

Be the number one goalie as opposed to a call up.

  33. Cable Guy says:

I can’t understand why Halak can’t get a start? What more does the guy have to do?

  34. wd40 says:

I don’t necessarily want to see the Habs go to OT against a team that’s 10-2 (5-0 in the extra period and 5-2 in the SO). That being said, if it’s in the stars, ’tis certainly better than a regulation loss. Huet is a good goaltender and i’d like to see him gain some confidence with a W in the SO, especially against this team. Though that “relief” goaltender in the SO sure is intruiging.

  35. Shawn S says:

Mckenzie hinting at Ryder for Tanguay. Ouch at his cap hit of 5.25 mill.

  36. Mike says:

hey boone, what happened to the boone jynx?

  37. Shawn S says:

Sportscentre will be talking about the trade right now. It has got to involve to Ryder. Tune it to TSN right now!!

  38. The Teacher says:

    Here come the Huet comments..

    Boone was polite I think.

  39. von says:

If it comes down to a shootout, its a guaranteed loss. And its not a comment, it’s fact. When Huet himself admits that he is not confident in shootouts, it’s a major weakness for the team. Carbo should definitely put in Halak at that point. What would he have to lose?

Hopefully we can win it before it gets to that point.

  40. J.T. says:

No need to worry about Huet’s ability or lack thereof in the shootout if the boys win it in regulation. Anyway, Huet’s got it in him to stone Atlanta…remember the 48-save performance last year when he robbed Kovalchuck on two breakaways?

And if the boys are going to win it in regulation, more players than just those on the number one line have to show up AND contribute. I know they’re mostly all working hard, which is great. But guys like Koivu, Higgins, Ryder and Latendresse have to finish their plays and they have to start immediately. One line, even the first line, going well isn’t enough if they’re to avoid a slump…and those nasty shootouts.

  41. Rugger says:

I feel it’s a Ryder-Lats night, with Streit adding in as well.

  42. P St. Pierre says:

I love Huet, therefore, I’m hoping this one doesn’t go to a shootout. He doesn’t seem to do very well in them. I’d still like to see Halak get a game at some point though.

  43. Naila Jinnah says:

Maybe Montreal’s interested in bringing local boy Lombardi home?

Though he wouldn’t do much for the scoring…

  44. howtathor says:

Lombardi would be great! But at what price?

  45. howtathor says:

Interesting comment by Mcguire. I think I’d rather be faster than tougher. I can’t see anyone that we can trade. All I’ve heard all day is how we should trade Kovalev because his value is high. Kovalev has been the heart of this team this year. Without him, we’re just ordinary. Even two Lombardi’s or Tanguay’s cannot make up for what he brings to this team. It hasn’t always been like that. Last year I would have traded him just to get him out of the room. I don’t know what kind of epiphany he had in the off season but without Kovy we would not be in 4th place in the conference. He’s the quarterback on the powerplay and as evidenced by the play of Plekanec and Kostitsyn he is lethal 5 on 5. I wouldn’t trade any of the Kosty kids because I think their success is fraternal. Andre only got going when Sergei arrived. Higgy is untouchable and so is Lappy. Who does that leave? Ryder? Not according to Mcguire. I would hold steady and not trade anyone. The team is doing well and if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. Maybe I’m deluding myself but can’t argue with the standings.

  46. J.T. says:

We’re going to get a lot of this in the next few years. Teams with problems are going to covet the Habs’ young, cheap talent. Many of them would make any team better. So Calgary may very well be scouting someone on the Habs, but that doesn’t mean they have anyone Gainey wants in return whom Sutter is also willing to give up. Gainey is going to find himself in the trade drivers’ seat more and more in the future. And he’ll be sitting there grinning like the Cheshire cat. On the inside, of course.

  47. fun police says:

lappy isn’t untouchable. “energy” guys never are. he won’t score more than 10 goals in a year and he will be fighting for his job every training camp when younger, more energy guys come to camp. i like lappy, that being said, if i can improve my club, then i’d trade him. higgins, double k’s, plecks, well that’s another story.

  48. howtathor says:

I have Kovalchuk in my hockey pool but I have to hope he doesn’t score tonight. I’d be happy with 5 shots on goal and 2 penalty minutes.

  49. Moey says:

I disagree, I say 5-3 Habs (did I really say that)?? Yikes, anyway, Go Habs Go…and GOLF LEAFS GOLF.

  50. wd40 says:

i don’t disagree with you, but he sure can be fun to watch. i’ve been lucky enough to watch him live a few games this year and he can be incredibly pesky on the forecheck in 5/5 and shorthanded situations.

  51. NLhabsfan says:

Jeez what a call by the ref.

  52. NLhabsfan says:

Jeez what a call by the ref.

  53. the_vipah says:

Wow imagine that, terrible blown call = goal on us.

Meanwhile, the tonic this team needs for an upgrade in offence AND toughness is Oli Jokkinen.

Die in your sleep Rechii..you bastard!

  54. The Teacher says:

Careful, Cournoy er12 will come after you..I said MUCH less than that and seem to have ticked him off…

  55. wd40 says:

i agree terrible call… but weak goal!

  56. The Teacher says:

ahhh Huet….too far in, too far out, bouncing pucks…

  57. wd40 says:

    he’s gotta stop that.

  58. linp says:

I have a bad feeling with this game. Our PP looks bad. No shot on goal. Huet is shaky. He may need more than 2 days rest per game.
Our team plays like the version against the ranger.

  59. NLhabsfan says:

Enough to turn a dogs stomach.A freebe for Atlanta.

  60. Habs-Kat says:

Game over? The Canadiens haven’t even been able to win after getting down by the insurmountable lead of 1-0 after the first.

  61. likehoy says:

our win percentage trailing at all after a period…the big goose-egg :)

  62. The Teacher says:

Well, if they can do it against anyone, Atlanta seems like a safe bet?

  63. 24 Cups says:

True. But if we still have enough jump left after four games on the road, we just might be able to pull this one out. Have to capitalize on our chances (and any future powerplays).

    The Original 24 Cups

  64. the_vipah says:

Wait..we are gonna try and blame Huet on that goal?

To me it looked like it went in off Gorges skate.

  65. Exit716 says:

That went in off his elbow.
    Pathetic call on Bouillon.
I see Detroit traded that popular American NHL player MT Seats to the Thrashers for tonight’s contest.

  66. wd40 says:

ok well, if that’s the case, then my bad.. i missed that.

  67. Chuck says:

Replay shows that it went in off of Huet’s blocker.

“A banner for Vezina must hang from the rafters!”

  68. NLhabsfan says:

Kovalchuk didn’t dive he lost his balance.Crap call.

  69. MikeL says:

When refs make horrible calls like that, there should be consequences. The league should look into it. That was easily the worst call ive seen all year

  70. Yeats says:

Good goalies down let crap like that in. End of story. Also, could he stay up for just a few minutes while Atl has possession of the puck. One more softy and Halak should get the nod. This dude is just too Abby-like for me. Let the sparks fly, I’m feelin’ frisky!

  71. NLhabsfan says:

What I have heard the refs review each period on their video. How can they explain that one.

  72. The Teacher says:

    Hahaha, frisky..hmm, feeling left out?

  73. Chuck says:

Then you need to watch more NHL hockey…

“A banner for Vezina must hang from the rafters!”

  74. Yeats says:

No, watching the game with friends. Don’t feel compelled to comment on every even-strength fart.

  75. Chuck says:

The book on Huet? Defy all logic and shoot from a sharp angle. :)

“A banner for Vezina must hang from the rafters!”

  76. Yeats says:

We really need a legitimate kicker, if we’re gonna make some noise. He’s the sort of guy you just hope to shoot on in pickup.

  77. 24 Cups says:

You should have seen last night’s game with Calgary – they won in a shootout but the calls against them were absolutely brutal (and I’m a Habs supporter).

    The Original 24 Cups

  78. the_vipah says:

Firstly you need to stop eating the stuff under the kitchen sink. Theres a reason for the Skull and Crossbones tag.

ALL goalies let in bad goals. Last year in the playoffs Brodeur gave up 2-3 goals from the corner boards right on the goal line to Tampa Bay. I’ve seen him give up atleast a dozen bad goals earlier in the season.

Right now Ty Conklin is playing like an all star. Is he one? I would guess no, since it just suddenly started. Remember the goal he coughed up against Anaheim in the Finals?

Martin Gerber lets in a bad goal every single game, yet he is considered elite by some.

In the end EVERY SINGLE GOALIE lets in a “bad” goal now and then. To me if the opposing player is shooting within 6 feet of the net, the responsibility goes to the Defense for not keeping that guy out of there.

Only someone high on household chemicals would think that putting in Halak right now would be a good idea. Huet saved our ass in the last game, has saved our ass MANY times before that and will continue to do so. We are losing this game because of the players in front of him and thats all there is too it.

  79. sag says:

Any one else told to go wash their mouth out with soap after the Boullion interference call?? That garbage always seems to lead to a goal. Hopefully karma will come back around…or a couple of kovalev wrist shots.

  80. MikeL says:

Yea cause I guess surfing nhl news all day and watching it every night for 4 hours isn’t enough. Don’t question my hockey knowledge please, it offends me.

Tell me of a worse call than that one….please….Kovalchuk was 2 or 3 strides away from bouilion when he fell.

  81. The Teacher says:

LOL, I meant left of out the arguing 😛 Your buddies Hab fans?

  82. Yeats says:

Would you like me to list every single goaltender in the Eastern Conference who is better than Huet? Please. Saved us against the Isles? Please. The only thing that saved the Habs was Kovalev’s empty netter. Explain to me, oh reader of Jacques Plante’s treatise on goaltending, why he is always down when the puck is nowhere near him. It is refreshing to see you bitch about something other than adverse officiating for a change though.

  83. the_vipah says:

    Sick goal.

Kari should have had it :p

  84. Chuck says:

    Highlight reel again!

“A banner for Vezina must hang from the rafters!”

  85. Habs-Kat says:

    Highlight of the Night!

  86. nick says:

That my friends… is how you score a effin nice goal.

  87. wd40 says:

    wow. just, wow.

  88. Ed says:

Mon Dieu! How can you describe that goal by A. Kostitsyn? It was a beauty!

  89. nick says:

    highlight of the week!

  90. wd40 says:

yeah… but maybe not on TSN (actually, they are coming around) :)

  91. PattyBoy31 says:

Once upon a time someone posted that we could have gotten getzalf instead of kostitsyn; i was bitter. Proven wrong. Amazing.

  92. arcosenate says:

they laughed when i took kostitsyn in the pool. they laughed.

  93. Cable Guy says:

    unfriggin believable goal!!

  94. Yeats says:

No, I rounded up a bunch of Thrashers’ fans to make my night interesting.

  95. Fagstein says:

Kostitsyn had good speed on him when he got the puck on a picture-perfect long-distance pass, but still: Wow. That’s Sidney Crosby-style highlight scoring there.

  96. The Teacher says:

Do you want to know who it is

  97. Chuck says:

    Yup. Sidney who?

“A banner for Vezina must hang from the rafters!”

  98. linp says:

    K1 plays like Crosby. WOW!

  99. The Teacher says:

That’s Crosby to you Sir 😉

  100. the_vipah says:

How about you name all the goalies better then Huet, I’d like to see your nuthouse rambling in full.

I try not to get down on the players on the team, I happen to like players who play for my favorite team.

Refs and players on other teams are fair game however.

Lastly Im not sure if i’ve seen Huet laying down when the puck is in the other end of the ice too often, however as he is a butterfly goalie that may explain how he favors the lower part of the net. Of course being that 80-95% of the leagues goaltenders play that way……

  101. The Teacher says:

  102. Yeats says:

You ever find out what Wayne Maki did to Teddy Green?

  103. Fagstein says:

And for the second game in a row we become a short-handed threat.

Nothing kills a penalty better than shots on goal.

  104. Mattee. says:

I wasn’t going to post today but WHAT A FRIGGIN GOAL!delicious and nutritious.

  105. The Teacher says:

Ouch, I don’t want Komi to get sent to Paris

  106. Mattee. says:

    That’s Cindy to you sir.

  107. Yeats says:

    1.) Ryan Miller
    2.) Henrik Lundqvist
    3.) Cam Ward
    4.) Martin Brodeur
    5.) Rick DiPietro

    Are you serious?

  108. The Teacher says:

LOL, he gets hit a lot more than other players.

  109. Chuck says:

    Yikes… that was close…

“A banner for Vezina must hang from the rafters!”

  110. wd40 says:

Hamrlik is a solid defenseman but he can’t hit the broad side of a barn!

  111. the_vipah says:

Yeah just found it on cbc.ca

Turns out Green slashed Maki till Maki clubbed him over the head and won the argument. Are you trying to tell me something? :)

  112. Sehs says:

    Ouch, nice hit on Streit.

  113. The Teacher says:

Can’t argue with those. Except maybe Lundy, I’m not sold on him.

  114. The Teacher says:

    PP goal time?

  115. Chuck says:

    An extra two, maybe?

“A banner for Vezina must hang from the rafters!”

  116. yathehabsrule says:

“2P 8:00: Nice play by my man Josh Gorges on Hossa.”

    Cue the Gorges giveaway/mistake..

  117. The Teacher says:

    What do you wish?

  118. wd40 says:

    pp goal. now!

  119. the_vipah says:

    This Year 26GP 14-7-5 2.39 .923

    Ryan Miller…
    This year 40GP 17-16-5 2.53 .911

    Henrik Lundqvist
    This year 41GP 20-17-4 2.36 .907

Cam Ward (lol this one is funny)
    This year 36GP 17-15-3 2.89 .899 (not even close)

    Martin Brodeur
    This year 40GP 24-14-2 2.10 .920

    Rick DiPietro
    This year 41GP 19-15-5 2.47 .915

Im not a huge fan of going on stats alone, but here you go. Huet is better in Wins – Losses +/- (7) then all but one of those guys you listed and more importantly has a better save percentage then all of them.

Cam ward is garbage, hes a Jim Carey all over again. He had ONE good playoffs and thats it.

Now I would obviously want Brodeur over Huet any day of the week, but the rest of those guys? Please dont give Gainey any ideas.

  120. The Teacher says:

    Concise aren’t ya? 😛

  121. The Teacher says:

Hmm, Maybe the stats don’t work out,

    but I’d take Ward’s 1 Cup and Brodeur’s 3 Cup’s over huet’s 0 any day.

  122. wd40 says:

they call me terse and laconic.

  123. Moey says:

Brilliant windup mate. I enjoyed that.

  124. the_vipah says:

What, my comment about Recchi? It was a joke…sorta 😉

  125. The Teacher says:

    Oh, I got the joke….but…;)

  126. The Teacher says:

Must be a lot of American players with the same name 😉

  127. The Teacher says:

starting to get Chippy out there!

Too bad we don’t have a Chipper!

  128. Chuck says:

Why do I get the feeling that Atlanta is going to score from behind the net before the night is over? 😉

“A banner for Vezina must hang from the rafters!”

  129. The Teacher says:

Aww, are we gonna have a Chuck Jinx instead of the Boone Jinx tonight? lol

  130. wd40 says:

i don’t know but i’ve seen so many crappy and blown calls i’m beginning to wonder if these guys ref in the CFL in the summer…

  131. Chuck says:

    I’m working on Boone’s reverse-jinx theory!

“A banner for Vezina must hang from the rafters!”

  132. showey47 says:

did saku almost bank that of lehtonen’s head?

  133. wd40 says:

it looked like it to me…

  134. Sehs says:

Fox Sports South guys giving props to the Kostitsyn brothers.

  135. the_vipah says:

Arrgg shoot the damn puck Ryder!@!

  136. The Teacher says:

    He did :S

unless you mean on the 3 on 1 rush?

  137. Chuck says:

Well, at lease we get better style points for our goal.

“A banner for Vezina must hang from the rafters!”

  138. the_vipah says:

Yeah. I just knew he would pass to the late guy…and the late guy being Smokes. Just shoot the puck Ryder!@##

  139. The Teacher says:

with that angle I’d give it to Smokes also…he’s a right shot coming from right, not much angle…

smokes could have made a better shot but he wanted to get it on net fast as Lappy was crashing….

  140. the_vipah says:

Seriously though, Smokes set it up and his grandma came rushing in to hit it with her handbag.

Actually that may have worked…Kari would have been so suprised it would probably zinged top corner…hmmm

  141. Ed says:

If he had to shoot on that 3 on 1, there would be certain fans who would be criticizing him because he did not pass. What’s a guy to do?

  142. ebk says:

please, switch smolinski and lapierre. Madd Max is playing way better than him.

What a goal by K1, we is going to grow into the game=breaker this team is missing.

  143. howtathor says:

So far it’s a real chess match with the breakaway speed of Kostitsyn getting us back in the game. The Hossa goal was a fluke. We have to press more in the third period, take the game to them. Go for the win, not the tie. I fear that the venerable Mr. Boone may be right in his shootout prediction!

  144. Chuck says:

Getzlaf has an assist tonight. We should have drafted him.

“A banner for Vezina must hang from the rafters!”

  145. The Teacher says:

Wait, doesn’t a goal count more in fantasy? I’d draft Kostitsyn.

  146. 24 Cups says:

Is Lats dressed? This is about his fourth lousy game in a row. Smolinski is doing OK. We can win this if we jusut connect on some of these numerous chances. Hope we don’t wear out in the third period.

Patrick Sharp @ 16 mil over four years? Yikes. Can’t wait to resign Pleks and Komi.

    The Original 24 Cups

  147. Chuck says:

“A banner for Vezina must hang from the rafters!”

  148. The Teacher says:

AHHHH, you guys are cracking me up.

  149. N.B.habs fan says:

does anyone know if the game is on the net.

  150. Chuck says:

It’s time to start winning the odd faceoff…

“A banner for Vezina must hang from the rafters!”

  151. Chuck says:

    We aren’t quite there yet.

“A banner for Vezina must hang from the rafters!”

  152. showey47 says:

agreed, especially in the defensive zone losing those will eventually kill us

  153. The Teacher says:

Boone’s prediction still has a chance.

  154. showey47 says:

does anyone remember if huet ever actually won a shootout?

  155. The Teacher says:

He must have been in net in that game against T.O. where Sheldon got the final goal on a fake slapshot?

  156. the_vipah says:

    Yawn. That easy.

  157. Chuck says:

Not pretty, but we’ll take it!

“A banner for Vezina must hang from the rafters!”

  158. The Teacher says:

RYDER!!! on his way to 10!

  159. Chuck says:

    Yes, he was.

“A banner for Vezina must hang from the rafters!”

  160. Rugger says:

    Ryder & Lats!

  161. showey47 says:

that could of been abby, when he was actually playing well or even halak

  162. Sehs says:

    Beautiful passing!

  163. Chuck says:

    Optimistic tonight, aren’t you? 😉

“A banner for Vezina must hang from the rafters!”

  164. Ed says:

On that Ryder goal, Latendresse showed that he can give a good pass. There was a nice pass from Smolinski to Latendresse as well.

  165. the_vipah says:

Well he now has more goals the Cheechoo who scored 56 in this league AND plays with Joe Thornton. Just goes to show that ANY player can get snakebit.

  166. The Teacher says:

Haha, maybe Abby, but not Halak, he wasn’t up yet I don’t think. Pretty sure it was Huet as I was at the game, but could be wrong.

If I’m right I knocked down two myths,

that Huet can’t win in shootout or beat the Laughs.

  167. linp says:

That should encourage Ryder to drive to the net more often

  168. N.B.habs fan says:

hay teacher …..Remember smartdog made a bet…he is getting closer to the 10 mark…..

  169. PattyBoy31 says:

I feel this line has some good chemistry, especially after the finish to the 2nd. Maybe Ryder isnt 100% happy on the 3rd line, maybe latendresse isn’t either (although i think thats were hes best) but that line looks pretty decent.

  170. The Teacher says:

    Oh yes I remember 😉

  171. The Teacher says:

IS THIS the first time we have…..

    well forget that now…sheesh

  172. the_vipah says:

    Nice work defense.

Hint for Hammer: The goalie is waiting for you to come take it.

  173. Chuck says:

“A banner for Vezina must hang from the rafters!”

  174. Alirio says:

    COME ‘ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I’ve made a huge mistake…

  175. NLhabsfan says:

    I to pissed to talk.

  176. The Teacher says:

Well, that’s interference for any other NHL goalie…

  177. linp says:

Who say Huet is a #1 goalie. He is brain dead

  178. PattyBoy31 says:

  179. Shawn S says:

Huet has made a huge mistake….

  180. Fagstein says:

For the next dozen posters, here’s how you spell it:

  181. Richard says:

That’s going to cost us some trade value

  182. Chuck says:

Yeah… like Huet had nothing to do with that…

“A banner for Vezina must hang from the rafters!”

  183. nick says:

geeez… must have been too easy having a 2-1 lead.

  184. The Teacher says:

Thank god we type with our hands eh?

  185. Sehs says:

    Freaking Huet

  186. fun police says:

huet hasn’t played a solid game from start to finish in a while. that is a concern. this will be quickly labelled as bashing, but that is the truth.

  187. JB_15 says:

    3-2 shootout AGAIN?!

  188. Cable Guy says:

Exactly why I said Halak should be in net. Huet has been ORDINARY this whole year. Now it wil cost us tonights game.

  189. the_vipah says:

Both defensemen back off of him waiting for a pass from a goalie we KNOW can’t handle the puck worth shit. Also he was hit from behind and thats why the puck came loose at all in the first place.

  190. Chuck says:

If he was leaving it for Hamrlik, then why wasn’t he getting his butt back in the net?!

“A banner for Vezina must hang from the rafters!”

  191. the_vipah says:

100% agreed. Bad play by Huet, bad play by the Defense not to support him better

  192. The Teacher says:

  193. Rob Maguire says:

Montreal should trade both Huet and Price for a couple of 6th round draft picks.

  194. The Teacher says:

No one else thinks that was interference on the goalie? Even if he made a lame-brained play.

  195. Chuck says:

A case could have been made for the call.

“A banner for Vezina must hang from the rafters!”

  196. Sehs says:

Atlanta commentators say that it was Huet trying to interfere with the forward since he was far out or something.

  197. nick says:

we should get one of those electric dog collars for him. Whenever he leaves the crease… ZAP!

  198. The Teacher says:

You’re not calling French goalies dogs now are you?

  199. Chuck says:

    Now THAT was funny!

“A banner for Vezina must hang from the rafters!”

  200. NLhabsfan says:

    Funny you are probably right.

  201. leafs67_andcounting says:

When is this dumbass gonna learn to stay in his @#%& net!!!!!!

  202. Forlando says:

I don’t care what he does from now on. I have seen enough of Huet and the guy simply isn’t a No 1 goalie. Have we seen Brodeur, Luongo or Nabokov giving a @#$%^&* soft goal every game?? That is why they are No 1 Goalies…Huet isn’t. Simply put he is not reliable…he has good moments but he can’t be trusted…and is brutal with the puck…./rant off

  203. Cable Guy says:

I equate Huet to Jeff Hackett. Not a bad goalie but not a number 1 goalie either. Halak has to start next game.

  204. Chuck says:

Two giftwrapped goals for Atlanta. If they win with another cheesy one…

“A banner for Vezina must hang from the rafters!”

  205. NLhabsfan says:

Huet blew that goal…but I would hate to see this go to a shootout.

  206. PattyBoy31 says:

yeah just so we can see him stand at the top of the crease for 3 shooters and not move an inch (he may twitch actually)

  207. The Teacher says:

HAHA komi Headbutting the goalie pretty much.

  208. The Teacher says:

Hmm, Hackett was much better than Huet, just had the habit of getting injured, don’t recall soft goals with him.

  209. Cable Guy says:

Hackett was just a filler goalie until Theo started playing good, same as Huet as a filler until Price becomes number one, the way Price is playing though in Hamilton it might be Halak that will be number 1. In any event Huet has been totally average all year except for his one shutout game.

  210. imafogdevil says:

For those of you who love the plus minus, here is why it is a somewhat irrelevant stat. Ryder scored 5 on 5, plus 1. He shepped on the ice when Huet assisted on Atlanta’s goal, back to 0.

Hamrlik knows Huet sucks at the puckhandling. The D needs to hustle and get back there before he can get out of the net.

  211. PattyBoy31 says:

I’ve tried to forget the goal already but was the puck in the restricted zone, still a bad play by huet but…

  212. The Teacher says:

I think Lehtonen will shut us out the rest of the game 😉

  213. christophurrr says:

tom the bomb just cost us the game with that beaut into lehtonen’s belly

the awesome powerplay has cost us the game goin 0-4

obviously huet hasn’t been at his best, but everyone on here is a big drama queen. it’s sickening.

  214. PattyBoy31 says:

Can we see Halak at least next game?

  215. Forlando says:

One of the best collective performances by the boys and this moron does that….I am so freaking mad…

  216. The Teacher says:

    HE twitched there!

  217. Chuck says:

So it’s the defense that takes the blame for Huet’s bad decision-making?

“A banner for Vezina must hang from the rafters!”

  218. Cable Guy says:

get the defibulator ready, i may need it.

  219. PattyBoy31 says:

If youre alright with giving up an empty net goal when the net isn’t supposed to be empty in a 2-1 game kudos to you

  220. wd40 says:

i think the word i’d use is fickle.

  221. christophurrr says:

obviously i’m not.. it was a bad play no doubt, but this lot turns on anyone so quickly, it’s hilarious.

  222. The Teacher says:

    Koivu line against Kovalchuk’s

  223. Chuck says:

Wrong. The offense has done their part with two hard-earned goals. Without those two easy goals for Atlanta, we’re up 2-0.

“A banner for Vezina must hang from the rafters!”

  224. imafogdevil says:

No, what I said was the D needs to get back so Huet doesn’t need to make that decision. Don’t give him the opportunity to do what he did.

  225. The Teacher says:

    15 guys on the ice..no call…

  226. the_vipah says:

People here like to bitch and cry alot and thats for sure.

Huet has not played his best game ever…no goalie in this league plays his best every game. What goalies are paid to do is give your team a chance to win and he does that.

Fact is Huet has played well this year and the proof is in his record and save % which are both good on an -average- team.

  227. wd40 says:

agreed. huet goes out to play the puck and hamrlik waits behind the net for the pass that never comes… instead he gets a brain-cramp.

  228. StillattheMapes says:

Just do not let Smolinski on the ice

  229. Forlando says:

I hope he breaks a stick on his head…

  230. The Teacher says:

    playing on their heels

  231. Chuck says:

Great. Now we’ve got to try and get back a point that we had already earned.

“A banner for Vezina must hang from the rafters!”

  232. DYCSoccer17 says:

need a goal here in overtime.

i dont wanna see huet get undressed again.

  233. The Teacher says:

  234. PattyBoy31 says:

i was wondering the same thing

  235. The Teacher says:

And also given one up to a conference team that unfortunately, cannot be returned.

  236. P St. Pierre says:

I love Huet, but he should be on a leash after that. Two giveaways in two nights is too many for an NHL calibre goaltender to be giving up. Way too many. That play is something that should happen two to three times a season at the most. The Pens would jump all over that type of play. I’d like to see Halak next game, not just because of Huet’s passes, but because he deserves a game.

  237. JB_15 says:

    Great save. Credit due.

  238. StillattheMapes says:

Honestly, I cannot understand why Smolinski is getting ice time. The guy has been floating around, has missed several key forechecks, and is largely a liability when he gets hold of the puck. Just awful.

  239. the_vipah says:

Thats what you Huet bashing clowns sound like..only in reverse.

  240. Moey says:

Mike keeps digging out that friggin old Ouija board, throw it away!!! No good can come from it!! (so my ma used to say)

  241. Cable Guy says:

plus Halak has never lost in Montreal.

  242. Chuck says:

I kind of hope that it goes to a shootout so that Huet has a chance at redemption.

“A banner for Vezina must hang from the rafters!”

  243. Rugger says:

Huet has made some great saves tonight

  244. PattyBoy31 says:

My theory: boone plays pro-line and tells Huet what score he wants and when. The rest is obvious.

  245. Shawn S says:

You guys heard it hear first, huet is gonna stone the thrashers in OT and get us those two points. Watch and see!

  246. PattyBoy31 says:

    he definetly twitched there 😀

  247. Forlando says:

Yes, but he completely changed the tempo of the game…he cut the legs of the whole team with that crap

  248. The Teacher says:

too bad you told us 3:30 into overtime…

  249. Shawn S says:

hahah, meant to say the SO! my bad!

  250. wd40 says:

what are you, his agent? lol.

  251. P St. Pierre says:

    Very true.

  252. The Teacher says:

I had kinda thought you meant to say that 😉

  253. the_vipah says:

    Nah just a Habs fan.

    Not many of them around.

  254. christophurrr says:

  255. Moey says:

    Oh Lord, let us pray.

  256. Moey says:

    Prayers worked, it’s a miracle.

  257. imafogdevil says:

Unbelieveable, Lats and Smoke as a pair on the ice in OT!!! WOW!

  258. The Teacher says:

Maybe Carbo’s trying to show Lats how much faster he needs to get?

  259. the_vipah says:

    Another huge save.

  260. Chuck says:

Yet a save that he wouldn’t have had to make if the game’s won in regulation.

“A banner for Vezina must hang from the rafters!”

  261. imafogdevil says:

Too bad Smoke is slower. Maybe Lats feels good next to him.

  262. wd40 says:

hamrlik is happy if his shots go in the general direction of the net.

  263. DYCSoccer17 says:

yet another overtime loss. we lead the NHL in OT losses.

  264. JB_15 says:

    This is unbelievable.

3 games in a row with shootout ending in 3-2.

  265. howtathor says:

    Huet owes us one!

  266. Y says:

    Lets put Halak in

  267. Exit716 says:

That’s a pair of lost points.
Is it a bad sign that when AK scores a highlight reel goal, our guys throw the game away with crappy goaltending?

  268. Cable Guy says:

no way we win the shootout.

  269. linp says:

Huet didn’t go down that much. I have to give him credit for that. If only he stays in the net.

  270. Shawn S says:

Huet will save us. Its gotta be killing him that he cost us the clean 2 points. He’ll get us one back in this SO.

  271. wd40 says:

the only potential positive here is that perhaps huet is actually hungry to stone these guys in SO to make amends for his .. well… miscues.

  272. The Teacher says:

    THE KOSTY’S!!!!

  273. The Teacher says:

  274. The Teacher says:

    WOW, two in a row!

  275. The Teacher says:

LMAO thanks for the gift Kari!

  276. imafogdevil says:

    Thank God!!! 3-2. Excellent!!

  277. Shawn S says:

What I say! Huuuuuuuet, huet huet huetttt! and captain K!

  278. JB_15 says:

  279. the_vipah says:

    Yawn…total ownage by Huet.

You guys who hated on him all game are morons and not Habs fans. Enough said.

  280. DYCSoccer17 says:

Huet looks interested in this shootout for some reason?

Perhaps he’s trying because he feels bad for giving them that goal?

  281. linp says:

Yea. I did notice that Huet didn’t go down like price did. Huet stops a few high shots in the third period. If he manages to keep staying in the net, he should be OK.

  282. Forlando says:

    I still hate him…LOL

  283. Steiner says:

  284. Y says:

Never lose hope in the Cristal Wall!

  285. Rugger says:

    Huet Huet Huet!

  286. Fagstein says:

I don’t undestand this goalie. If you slide completely into your net on every shot, don’t you pretty well guarantee a goal?

  287. Keith says:

WOW Huet wins a shootout. Who would have thunk it?

  288. NLhabsfan says:

    Now I can breath.

  289. DYCSoccer17 says:

yeah, he totally owned Kozlov on that breakaway.

where was all of his owning of the Thrashers in the first 2 shootouts this year?

  290. Shawn S says:

lol at the turn around, i love us jump the gun after every bad play fans. Makes following the habs just that more entertaining!

  291. nick says:

And Captain K puts the nail in the coffin.

I gotta say… as peeved as I was with Huet a litte earlier… Well i’m less peeved now. We’ll just leave it at that.

  292. Chuck says:

Not bad. He had to make one save. 50% ownage. :)

“A banner for Vezina must hang from the rafters!”

  293. the_vipah says:

    Hey guess what we won.

Why are we talking about old games now? Angry that all your bashing and whining came out wrong in the end?

  294. the_vipah says:

    lol true enough

  295. Rugger says:

I would say that the Koivu goal was just as bad a goalie play as Huet’s.

  296. Fagstein says:

    Sorry, what was that again?

  297. Chuck says:

No… HAPPY that all of the bashing and whining came out on the wrong end. As much as Huet sucked at times tonight, we should thank our lucky stars that Kostitsyn brought his A game tonight.

“A banner for Vezina must hang from the rafters!”

  298. The Teacher says:

    Very true.

  299. MikeMcLaren says:

Hey Mike B, the Atlanta broadcast named their Coca-Cola player of the game…

    Cristobal Huet.

  300. P St. Pierre says:

    I’m in awe.

  301. N.B.habs fan says:

TIMO AND TEACHER .we can sleep better tonight…….

  302. Habs-Kat says:

    I still like Huet :)
He got the W’s to make this a playoff-bound team.

  303. P St. Pierre says:

The voice of reason…we were all freaking out…haha.

  304. howtathor says:

  305. Ed says:

I have been hearing rumours on here that Huet is no good in shoot outs. He was all right tonight, and he came through in the overtime. Thank goodness Koivu scored on that shot, and did not go with his patented deke. Also, A. Kostitsyn came through again in the shoot out, after getting a regulation goal that was a beauty.

  306. PattyBoy31 says:

Well he has had quite a few bad shootouts the last few, but all that matters right now is he came through and bounced back from something that is really tough to bounce back from

  307. Chuck says:

Thank God they didn’t give Huet one of the three stars!

“A banner for Vezina must hang from the rafters!”

  308. NLhabsfan says:

We win but still wary of the shootout.

  309. yathehabsrule says:

How can three Thrashers be named the three stars (as announced by the home arena announcer)…????

  310. JF says:

The stars according to RDS were Kostitsyn, Hossa and Markov.

  311. Exit716 says:

Because they explain everything to those goofs at every whistle.
Sorry, your team has been in the league for a decade. If hockey is confusing, fold the team, you’re never going to understand it. Also they lead the league in fans pounding the glass for no apparent reason.
What a crappy market and what a crappy team.
Thanks Gary. We love sending our team’s hard earned profits to loser franchises like that.
    Fold already.

  312. gumper says:

Really glad Huet redeemed himself tonight. Maybe it will keep a few of the jackals off his back.

  313. The Teacher says:

me too, but who cares, we won, lol.

  314. The Teacher says:

    ottawa 5 carolina 1

  315. Ed says:

Teacher pointed out the too many men on the ice by Atlanta in the third. It seemed to last forever. How could the referees not call it?

  316. Chuck says:

Whattaya know? the laffs actually beat a backup goalie tonight! Granted it was shootout, so Boston got a point, too.

“A banner for Vezina must hang from the rafters!”

  317. Fagstein says:

I’m not comfortable with this whole Boone’s-prediction-being-correct thing. Where was the jinx?

  318. The Teacher says:

Only think I could think of is they can’t count to ten.

  319. imafogdevil says:

Well, we won. Huet is a good goalie, he just has to stop thinking that he is Brodeur wth the puck.

  320. Sehs says:

Now our win percentage when trailing after one will show .022!

  321. Sehs says:

The FSN commentators also say it was Hamrlik’s fault because he had to stay in front of the net to support Huet and not go behind him.

Even if that’s the case, Huet still can’t play the puck worth a damn.

  322. Ed says:

Finally we will get rid of that .000.

  323. Sehs says:

P.S. Atlanta and Edmonton are 21 shots and going in their SO, none goals.

  324. Chuck says:

Maybe Huet has compromising pictures of them. 😉

“A banner for Vezina must hang from the rafters!”

  325. 24 Cups says:

6 out of 8 points on the road – I’ll take it. I’m a firm believer that results speak for themselves but Huet’s puckhandling mishaps need to be addressed or it’s going to be the Achilles heel that breaks our hearts later in the season. A discussion for tomorrow I’m sure.

I thought we could have won these last two games handily but in both cases we had to hang on for dear life. Not sure if that’s a character builder or a cause for concern.

    Anyway, we won!!!

    The Original 24 Cups

  326. Chuck says:

If Hamrlik is supposed to stay in front of the net, then who’s expected to deke the rushing forechecker and clear the puck? Huet?

“A banner for Vezina must hang from the rafters!”

  327. JB_15 says:

Lost in all of this: That was the first game all year where we won after trailing after the first period!

NB: Nevermind, I missed that post below.

  328. Yeats says:

Huet is the freakin’ man!!! He creates more excitement than any kicker should be allowed to. He comes out of the net to play the puck and I tell the wife to get the paddles ready. As far as that second one was concerned, all she could say to the EMS guys was, “hurry, we’re losing him.” Ready Clear, Boom! Brian’s back!!! He is way underpaid for the entertainment he provides. Roller coasters are for sissies when you can watch Huet between the pipes. Yea, and on breakaways he terrorizes opposing shooters. Made Kozlov miss the net for God’s sake. All kidding aside, we need more from our goaltenders, if we’re gonna make a serious run.

  329. RH says:

I couldn’t help but laugh on that Huet/Hamrlik miscue. As much as I should’ve been outraged, angry and all that other good stuff, it just looked like a Mexican stand-off or something.

Six of eight on another loooonnngg roadtrip. I thought the Habs had control of this game up until the miscue. Especially in the second. They didn’t get caught up in the Thrashers speed game and they showed a lot of patience tonight.

Back home to face the red hot Penguins and, Ty Conklin?? Wasn’t he the guy that made that gaff against the ‘Canes in the finals a couple of years ago? I guess he must making up for it.

  330. Chuck says:

I’ve got to say, at times he’s really bad for my drinking problem!

“A banner for Vezina must hang from the rafters!”

  331. JB_15 says:

I am not sure many people realize the composure it takes to perform the way he did after screwing up that badly. That takes serious maturity and patience, and even though he did make a horrible play, he more than made up for it and i forgive him entirely.

  332. likehoy says:

thank god huet didn’t screw the pooch…he’s going to say something along the lines of this..

“i let the guys down (from leaving the net) and i felt like i had to give something back to them so i decided to make a couple of saves to ensure we get the victory…” and off the record “…but don’t worry guys i’ll let my teammates down again soon so it makes me look better when i make saves”

on tanguay…WHY?! he’s a playmaker with slick moves…uhhh saku koivu anyone??? waste of space and salary cap..

player we should be after: marian hossa…atlanta will want a dman…give them david fischer + ryder + 1st rounder + 2nd rounder…Hossa wnats to go to a contender…gainey tells hossa “we have lots of young talent and our future looks bright…with you, we won’t win a cup, we’ll win 5”

  333. Yeats says:

I’ve got it to, but I’m more positive about the whole thing. To me, it’s not a problem at all!

  334. ebk says:

After giving up a horrendous goal. Huet does what any #1 goal should. He shuts to door and gave his team a chance to win, and they did. All goalies make mistakes, the good ones bounce back and redeem themselves. Huet did that.

K1 is going to be a monster when he grows up. He will banging out 35 to 45 goals a year soon and over 80 points. Only other player on the team that could score a goal like that is Alex. This kid is a beaut. Best player on the team under the age of 25.

Michael Ryder scores a goal that only a few players on his team can. If he gets going and bangs out 20 for the season, this team will walk into the play-offs. I really liked him with Higgins and Lapierre but I can live with Lats and Lapierre as well. No Smoke though, its bad for the teams health.

Team now extends its record to 12-2-3 with Brisebois.

    Thanks for reading.

  335. P St. Pierre says:

Yeats and Chuck, you guys are awesome to read. I enjoy all your comments. Ditto with Huet + Drinking = Drinking Doubled.

  336. Yeats says:

I don’t expect the second coming of Patrick Roy. I think we could make some noise in the playoffs if we could just find a Steve Penney.

  337. Yeats says:

You have to catch our standup routine! Right Chuck!!!

  338. Mike says:

hes not a finisher tho, he is a playmaker. Im not sure he is the right fit for this club. Who would he play with?

  339. ebk says:

add Hossa to their line up this year and the team will take a good run at Lord Stanley’s Mug.

He knock K-Rex down the food chain a couple of notches with a monster body check in the corner

  340. P St. Pierre says:

Actually it was Washington and Edmonton and Boyd Gordon got the winner. Guess who couldn’t reply for the Oil? Sheldon Souray. I still like the guy, but I’m glad he isn’t here anymore.

  341. ebk says:

what do you consider a finisher than cuz the big Hoss has banged out over 30 goals the last 6 years and 45,36,39 and 43 the last four. Looks like a finisher to me.

and anyone he freaking wants to :)

Hi mr. Boone, I am totally blown away by your prediction!! I still can’t believe how well you nailed it.. !!!

  344. P St. Pierre says:

    Disregard the above comment.

  345. Yeats says:

He still scares the livin’ crap out of me.

  346. P St. Pierre says:

Great post. Huet scared me quite a bit, especially heading into the shootout, but I’m glad he was able to salvage the two points.

I totally agree with your comments on Andrei K. He’s been unreal of late.

With reference to some of your posts below, I agree that Hossa would look really good on Koivu’s line, but the Canadiens would probably have to give up way too much this season to get him. However, if Bob could somehow clear some cap space and land this guy as a UFA, that would be sweet. The only question I would have is who’s starting in net? Neither Huet nor Price (in his present state) really instill confidence in me as being a Cup contending netminder.

  351. Sami says:

Hey, me too, but we got the win, wooooo hoooooo
And Steve Penney would give me nightmares redux, thanks Yeats (B)

  352. P St. Pierre says:

It’s probably weird to reply to my own post, but here goes.

Huet would need to be resigned if the team isn’t ready to with Price as the number 1 netminder. Unless Halak for some strange reason gets a shot and dazzles. If the team were to resign Huet as well as take care of any other players with RFA status, they may not be able to afford Hossa. Still, I’d love to see him in a Habs uniform, he’s a very good player. Apart from this season, he’s only had one other one where he’s been a minus player (his first season) and he’s definantly an elite talent.

  353. Ian G Cobb says:

Huet, What the hell are you doing, your a great tender when it comes to stopping the shot. You play your angles well but growing up you never had a pair of skates on or a stick in your hands. I think maybe you should of been a catcher in baseball. One thing is for sure, your consistent and we don’t ever nod off when your between the pipes, please stay at home in the future.

And Hammer ! you know its a penalty if he touches the puck there, try to react to the play if you don,t mind.

You guys never make it easy on us or yourselves. I’m trying to stay positive here fellas, RYDER scores, Kostinson puts in a highlight goal and most of you worked hard all night.

Please practice your face offs, and for crying out loud, do not ice the puck in the last minute. Especially when you can’t win a face off in your end.

  354. ebk says:

I like Huet, no way he signs here after the season. Price and Halak will be between the pipes

Plus/Minus is probably the most useless stat ever.

Don’t worry about reply to your own posts, krob does it all the time.

  355. ebk says:

    shoulda read 12-2-3 without brisebois

darn it now I’m doing a krob, too

  356. likehoy says:

doesn’t andrei K remind you a bit of hossa? they’re both about the same size…both have rocket shots and are both dynamic…:):)

  357. likehoy says:

i wouldn’t blame hammer…i mean…when he saw huet’s gaffe…he has every right to feel exasperated and frozen cause of the stupidity. It was like a train wreck..you just top and watch for a bit…till you realize you should do something.

  358. ebk says:

he sure does, the hoss is a bit bigger but they both skate the same way.

  359. Chuck says:

Be sure not to miss the Sunday matinee… 2-for-1 domestics!

“A banner for Vezina must hang from the rafters!”

  360. P St. Pierre says:

Haha…you are right about plus/minus. My point was more that Hossa is generally a defensively responsible player (something Carbonneau and Gainey both appreciate) while still producing offensively. Plus/minus is not a very good way to rate his defensive prowess. He usually has the puck, what better way is there to control a game than by having it in the other team’s zone?

I also don’t think Huet will resign as he’ll want a term that is too long for the Canadiens. Price is Gainey’s boy, he’ll get the best shot at number 1. Hopefully the cap room created by letting Huet, Ryder, Brisebois, etc. walk and a few other small moves by Gainey would allow the Canadiens to sign an elite talent up front.

  361. Chuck says:

What’s the view like up there on that pedestal of yours?

“A banner for Vezina must hang from the rafters!”

  362. ebk says:

let’s hope. He missed the last two summers, hopefully third time is a charm.

  363. Ian G Cobb says:

You should blame him because it was his play, the goaler can not play the puck behind the line. Granted Huet should have been in the dam net. They both looked like atoms out there.

  364. nightmare_49 says:

krob only replys to his own novels , he’s special , he gets to the point early then covers his ass the rest of the novel.

  365. teamplayer says:

“1P 2:30: Kovalchuk dives and Bouillon sits.”
come on mike dont be a homer, bouillon shouldnt have gotten a penalty thats correct but kovalchuk didnt dive, these are the best players in the world but they will fall sometimes. For example when briere got the penalty on the phantom trip and we scored to win the game… guess things have a way of evening themselves out. If you would like to see more players fall with no one touching them, check out cogliano shootout attemp (20th shooter), he fell twice.

I’m so thrilled that our habs finally came back from that 1st period deficit, no more .000 beside that column

I missed the 2nd period so I missed kosts goal but everybody watch the highlights for rick nashs game winning goal, he justs embarasses the coyotes two defensemen, my vote for goal of the year so far.

    2nd in the conference!!!

  366. sidhu says:

Sorry for joining the party late, I just watched the game via my DVR. A few thoughts – the Atlanta PA announcer’s “on the Power Play!” is extremely annoying, it’s sad some teams have to use such gimmicky announcements to jump start the crowd. The Kosty brothers can play a finesse and physical game, they are a pleasure to watch. I still think it makes more sense to place Max with Lats and Ryder, and Smoke on the fourth line – Lats is stepping up his game and Max’s speed and gritty play are underutilized on the fourth line. Koivu and Higgins, by contrast, need to take things to the next level – they need to provide an effective counterbalance to the Pleks line.

We have too many players sitting around available to play. Something has to give. Tanguay is a LW and we already have several (Lats, AK46, Higgins). I think Lombardi is the more attractive player for us – he’s fast, plays a two-way game, and is young.

I’m not trying to be overly optimistic, but part of me thinks we are an impact player away from making a serious run in the playoffs.

  367. Nav says:

It will be very interesting to see whether Gainey will be a strong buyer. We have to make a statement this year but I hope we don’t sell the farm to get a short-term injection of hope. It’ll be fun to see how the trade deadline plays out this year….Usually sucks but I have some hope.

  368. G-Man says:

I agree, but I think the player we need is already in the organization. He scored the go ahead goal last night, but has been snake-bit most of the season. If Ryder were having the season expected of him, Habs would have the #1 offense in the league. The style of team D that shuts down the other team’s Offense in the neutral zone and turns the puck around with a quick transition game is what we’ve been waiting for. Sure, it’s boring against low-powered teams, but it’s damned effective when executed properly. Kovalchuk had 0 shots through 2 periods last night and that’s a really good sign.

  369. G-Man says:

Give it to ’em, Ian! You are bang on!

  370. likehoy says:

i stongly disagree and i’m not sure you used “they both looked like atoms out there,” in the proper context, could you please clear that up for me?

huet screwed up and put hammer in a bad position. huet MOVED the puck into the no play zone…hammer was set up behind the net for the pass…should we blame komi too cause he stopped on the side boards expecting the outlet pass instead of following through on the play??

it’s like when gorges whiffed his pass earlier in the season…did we blame bouillon for not being closer to gorges? I wouldn’t have even blamed raycroft/toskala (whoever was in nets) when mccabe scored on his own net. I don’t believe you can blame the bystander when he made his play while his teammate gets a brain cramp.

  371. likehoy says:

true but andrei k is no slouch in the physical play.

  372. GrimJim says:

Okay. I know I’m a day late on this and there is probably no one out there to respond but I’ll throw this into the wind anyway. Should Huet have just played the puck in the trapezoid and taken the penalty? Would that have been a good penalty to take?

  373. krob1000 says:

Yes in hindsight it would have been a good idea. Either way he would have been blasted today. I wish we knew what and how loud things were said ont he ice because it is very important to communicate on the ice and it has to be decisive. Huet strikes me as very laid back and almost reserved…….that is not a bad thing unless we get into this type of situation. I hope he takes it upon himself to be vocal to the point his vocal cords hurt and that goes for our defensemen too.

Ultimately he rigthed any wrongs he made and more. The post blunder Huet was fantastic. He seemed to finally relax and made some incredible saves. I know it is hard to say something like that is a good thing but after the result, reading everyones takes, his quotes and having taken time to think about it…..it’s probably the best thing that could have happened. Adversity builds character and character wins. The problem is some guys can’t overcome adversity …..Huet has just proven to himself again that he can. I was so happy for him geting a shot at redemption and then for Koivu to score after almost costing us the game on that giveaway (not to mention he missed several chances) was the icing on the cake. Ryder scored and both Kostitsyn’s looked phenomenal….what a game.

  374. Girth says:

    Nice image…!… LOL!

Oh well… I suppose it was time I updated mine.

  375. Girth says:

Mike… allot of players spend some time on the stationary bike to flush the lactic acid from their muscles which builds up due to the explosive nature of the game.

The bike allows the athletes a way to exert constant & steady effort. This apparently helps cramping and allows for easier recovery etc…

Not to mention the aerobic benefit…

  376. P St. Pierre says:

nhl.com has the three stars as follows:
    1. Andrei Kostitsyn
    2. Kari Lehtonen
    3. Marian Hossa

  377. Chuck says:

True. He could have just as easily folded like a cheap tent. I think that Kostitsyn probablt skated over to him and said, “don’t you dare waste my highlight reel goal!”
