It’s been a rough summer for retired tough guys.
But at least one NHL enforcer seems to have found enlightenment.
When the Dalai Lama speaks at the Jarry Park tennis stadium in Montreal on Wednesday to mark Tibetan Democracy Day, the host of the event will be none other than Georges Laraque.
The announcement, from the Canada Tibet Committee, describes BGL as “a philanthropist and businessman protecting the rights of animals, the environment and humans alike …”
Laraque is “the perfect fit to introduce His Holiness. As a model global citizen, he’s already a testament to universal responsibility. Laraque is leading the effort to rebuild Port-au-Prince’s Grace Children’s Hospital, is a leading advocate for animal rights and, in 2003, was the spokesperson for the Edmonton Capital Health District’s Shaken Baby Syndrome Campaign.
In the final season of his contract buyout, Laraque is collecting $500,000 from the Canadens in 2011-’12.
