The new Captain is 0-1

Gionta’s first statement in French (per Marc de Foy of ruefrontenac): “On a joué comme les chaudrons.”

Loose translation: “We sucked.”

Hey, it’s only pre-season …

    Nope, Brian Burke on crack.

  6. WarHero says:

Have you ever seen “Return of the Jedi”?

If so, he is the little dude that sits with Jabba the Hut. e later chews out 3PO’s eye when they are on the sail barge trying to put luke and company in the Sarlacc pit :)

    i am a massive SW fan :)

    Now on Twitter!

  10. habfab14120 says:

Salacious Crumb.  Does it make me a nerd that I know it’s name?

  11. sidhu says:

According to John Lu, there are two temporary slots on the Habs (with no Markov and Hammer), and that those slots are being fought for by Henry, Picard, and Weber.  Based on preseason, I think the first two deserve the slots.  Sorry to say because I wanted to like Weber’s game.

  12. SeriousFan09 says:

Pretty sure it’s that rat-monkey thing from Return of the Jedi that was sitting next to Jabba the Hutt. Pretty sure since I watched the movie like 80 times as a kid, conservatively.

  19. Josh says:

I’ll never understand how he made as many fans as he did in Montreal.

  20. showey47 says:

I like what henry brings,it crossed my mind that given the right scenerio he could actually stick around. Keeps his game simple and will drop them with anybody. Gaining one more step in his foot speed could make him a 3rd pairing nhl defenceman on pretty much any team.

  21. king ddd says:

dude maybe i am dumb, but i have trying to figure out your avatar for so long and still havent figured it out. is that a cat

  22. Wayne says:

Eat your heart out, Bugsy Siegel.

  23. WarHero says:

I loved Kovy, and like you say, he was awesome when had the C, unfortunately, he wasn’t like that without it :(

Never judge another man’s decision poor until you actually have proof of it failing!

  24. Fansincebirth says:

Living in Ottawa, I get to hear a lot about Kovy and have been to see him play and the opinion of him isn’t very high with his “I’ll play when I want to” attitude…

    Patience is wearing thin.

Kinda funny actually, comparing now to the ribbing I took when they picked him up :o)

“Without the strength of the past, the team may face a choice – to win, or to be French-Canadian?” — Ken Dryden

  25. Shiloh says:

Absolutely wish it didn’t have to be that way, but we have had St. Carey stuffed down our throats even though he has been very suspect for years, not months. If the braintrust, now led by BobLite, weren’t so quick to banish anybody who might play better than our fragile young man, maybe we’d have playoff-level goaltending. Shipping out anyone who plays better than Price will require a hell of a lot of trades.

  26. petrov14 says:

“Captain America leads Canadiens to victory”. I like it. All we need is a big W

And when I see it as a headline on TSN i’ll know I saw it here first, compliments of Cpt.K4life!

    ______________________________________ Gionta IS Captain.

  27. BeachHabFan says:

was a kovy hopeful but never a fan. he did well as the C but too likely to go crusin when someone else was there to take the lead. frustrating to watch, can’t imagine what it was/is like to be line or teammate. Gionta seems the polar opposite, all grit and effort and balls, like koivu and his 5’7″ predecessors, and a true scoring touch. feelin good about the season, let’s go already!!!

  28. Wayne says:

I think Ovie’s been a breath of fresh air from day one. I just can’t get a hate on for him. The commercial is cheesy but he clearly continues demonstrate that he doesn’t give a shlt what people think of him.

  29. Habscore says:

Hehe thnx buddy…it’s a Boeing 777-200..this big baby is so impressive..

  30. Wayne says:

If they’re not on the ice at 7:35, Benoit Pouliot might score a goal.

Love that one. Big Thumbs up!

  31. AH says:

Great choice for captain! Let the era of “The Little General” (ala Napoleon) begin!

Hopefully with not too many “Waterloos”

    GO HABS GO!!

  32. Will Longlade says:

I’ve always found Ovie kinda creepy. In the new commercial he brings creepy to a whole new level. Great talent though, and I’d be a big fan if he had more respect for other players.

  33. Harani says:

Stevie Y posing in a suit for The Bay! WOW!

    “It must be love!”

  34. HabsMitch says:

    I’m referencing Halak!

  35. SPATS says:

    I stand corrected…

  36. STZA says:

    It’s funny because it’s true.

  37. ShangaDoo says:

Hey guys, not sure if its been posted already. Just wondering on your opinion of the lines they came up with,

I love the fact White is a given chance.

Dose anybody think PG signed one too many? (like Darche) and no love for Pouliot… I am really starting to lose faith in him.

  38. bostonantifan says:

Get his mojo back“?  The last time he had any mojo was over 2 years ago.  If he hasn’t gotten it back by now, sitting him out against Buffalo won’t do it.

  39. punkster says:

Oh-ohhh…the perfect setup…he’ll give us that soul vaccination we need…

  40. habs001 says:

as long as pk and markov are in the line up(hopefully soon) we are good at getting the puck out….but with only one in the line up i am not sure that the rest of the d can handle teams that have fast/aggressive forecheckers.. gill,spacek.gorges.hammer.obyrne many times last season had real trouble getting the puck out which resulted in extended play by opposition forwards in our zone…

  41. G-Man says:

He’s our tower of power underdog.I am happy Henry is playing as well as he is, but I know once Hamrlik or Markov is ready, he will be in Hamilton.

  42. SeriousFan09 says:

Henry wore the C for Hamilton last season, but I suspect he’ll be cut soon as while he can hit, he just never seems able to keep up with NHL games. He’s a good C for the Dogs as he can play to a high level in the AHL, can fight and gives a lot of veteran experience to the room. MTL, he’s behind OB and Picard for a spot.

    – I shall always remember Captain Koivu.

  43. WarHero says:

You are correct Ian, he is the C.

My thinking is that he is still there to show OB how a big man should be using his size and toughness

Never judge another man’s decision poor until you actually have proof of it failing!

  44. Chuck says:

Cool avatar! Not many folks would get the chance to pose in the inlet of a 9ft. turbofan!

  45. Chuck says:

    ^ ^ ^ Axe to grind.

  46. Xtrahabsfan says:

I’m happy for Carey he didn’t have to face  Buffalo…let him get his mojo back nice and easy……

  47. DearyLeary says:

Yeah, he wears a letter, can’t remember offhand if it’s the C or not.

Henry was paired with PK a lot last year, to make sure nobody took advantage of him (even though PK’s perfectly capable of standing up for himself).  I read a few interviews where Henry said that PK should reign it in from time to time, the enthusiasm is good for the team, but at some point he’s gonna get his ass kicked.

  48. Jordio-oh says:

I wouldn’t be so bad if it wasn’t the same old complaints and comments from the same old unpleased commentariat, such as yourself.

  49. Shiloh says:

Accuse two players of lacking heart in a single post and all you hear is the sound of crickets in the night. Even dare to hint that St. Carey missed one and his legion of protectors descend like the homeland is being attacked. Sometimes this place is more like the ‘I Heart Carey” site than HIO.

  50. matmacat says:

who are you (not) referring to? If you speak of Gionta, then you might need to look up ‘charisma’ in the dictionary.

  51. Chorske says:

Absolutely agree with everything in this post.

  52. Ian Cobb says:

Henry works hard for both clubs, he is a captain for Hamilton is he not ? But when Markov and Hammer come back, he is in jeopardy, unless someone else goes down to injury or does not perform up to their level.

  53. mbplekfan says:

Big night for Alex Henry. If he keeps it simple and plays solid defense he will stick around. If they were’nt keeping a veteran like him I think he would already be in Hamilton. Its not fair to give a 30 year old journeyman false hope.

A few big league paychecks is a huge financial boost for a guy like him.

  57. Ian Cobb says:

Habscore, thanks for the link. Goose bumps!

  58. SPATS says:

Yep, BG KO’d all of the KO’s (Kovalev, Koivu, Komisarek, Kostopolous, Kostitsyn 74)

Except for AK 46. Think he’s figured it out yet? I’m not optimistic.

  59. SPATS says:

There’s no “I” in team – ancient cliche

    But, there’s and “M & E” – Alex Kovalev?

  60. SPATS says:

It’s all about the dangle, nobody dangles like Kovy and the masses swoon….I’m puking in my hands. We’re so much better off without him and his lack of heart, AK 46 has studied him very well indeed

  61. Ian Cobb says:

JF. good post and your bang on this is a TEAM sport.! Everyone needs to be on the same page for large things to happen together.

  62. LNev says:

The love for a 3 year guy who averaged 60pt/season has always baffled me.

  63. OneTimer says:

Man, #3 is so sick…my favourite for sure. Pure hustle.

  64. JF says:

The great thing about last year’s playoff team was that they were all pulling together.  Those who weren’t (Laraque and SK74) were excluded.  I think having a player whom everyone knows to be inconsistent in his effort  must be bad for team unity and undermine the captain’s leadership.  Kovalev was spectacular when he wanted to be, but there were too many nights when he didnt want to.   And  there were so many rumours of bad blood between him and Koivu that one has to wonder whether the situation in the locker room was bad the whole of that final year and not just at the end.  What emerged last year was a very strong leadership by committee, and I think that will continue under Gionta’s captaincy.  I liked what Gill said, that the team needs everyone to be a leader at some point.

  65. habsfanincalgary says:

I loved Kovy’s flash and his magician mastery of the puck.  As sad as I was to see him go, I think Cammy fills the role: as good (if not better) a one-timer, less flash but greater consistency.

As for the new C, great choice!

  66. SeriousFan09 says:

Awesome goals, love how most of those goals were just big clutch plays for the team.

    – I shall always remember Captain Koivu.

  67. mbplekfan says:

Kovalev was a selfish player, with a poor work ethic. He was magnificent when he was ON but was horrendous when he was OFF.

The team is much better served by the likes of Gionta, Cammaleri, and Gomez than the Koivu, Kovalev, Komisarek trio.

  68. Habscore says:

I’m sure most of you all saw this last night on RDS, but for those who don’t have it here it is.

Gio’s Top 10 goals from last season…the top 3 are simply insane it brings tears to my eyes ( love the Gomez-Cammi-Gio chemistry )

    ………………………………………………………………. YES HABS CAN!!

  69. HabsMitch says:

I get the fans loved Halak, hell I did to when he was winning games…but doesn’t a fan favorite have to be a little bit charismatic at least?

  70. Da Hema says:

Good words. I knew then and there Gainey made the right decision after Kovalev and his agent tried to squeeze the team. What surprised me was that Gainey made an offer to Kovalev in the first place, especially given his Hollywoodish high-maintenance nature. It is just impossible to believe Kovalev’s moods didn’t have an overall negative effect on everyone from management down to the players. There was far too much focus on Kovalev when he was here rather than on the performance of the team as such. I am relieved Kovalev is plying his trade elsewhere.

David St. Hubbins: Oh, too much. Too much fu*king perspective.

    –This is Spinal Tap

  71. notbigbird says:

    “What if Kovalev had signed?”

There would be a lot less optimism on this site right about now.

  72. Mike MacPhee says:

I take to heart the comments of those who endorse the Gionta captaincy.  I also agree, although I would also note that we are (finally) blessed with a wealth of leadership potential, all of whom will enhance unity in the dressing room.  The Habs enjoy a very strong leadership group and Gionta will make an excellent captain.

I also take to heart the admissions of some posters of their disappointment when Kovy didn’t sign and their inability to get excited when Gionta did.  That reminds me that sometimes (often) my first impressions are wrong; and I have to end up eating my words.  Hopefully this experience will help all of us not to overreact when the Habs, players and management, aren’t doing what we think they should be doing.  Maybe our first impressions are wrong.

  73. Propwash says:

I’d rather have a player who busts his arse every game than an enigmatic guy who occasionally showed flashes of brilliance.

  82. boneheadslanger33 says:

  83. HabSgt says:

Gionta will be a far better Captain than Kovalev ever would have been. As stated below, it’s better to have a consistent worker in a leadership position than a primadonna, no matter how good that primadonna is (and Kovy was brilliant when he wanted to be).

  84. Fant-HAB-ulous says:

Well we will just have to wave at each other at future games :)

So when I access TSN on channel 400 the info thingy top of the screen informs me that I can get HD on channel 1400. I have a HD PVD and TV but there appears not to be  such a channel on my TV?

So the question is, is #400 in HD? Or how do I get TSN HD? Or do they not yet have TSN HD?

Thanks, was looking forward to my first Habs game on HD TV.

  90. yathehabsrule says:

It should say TSNHD on your menu if it’s Rogers, if not mistaken.

  91. notbigbird says:

400 is not HD as far as I know. It’s up higher.

  104. JIMVINNY says:

That was a horseshit penalty call.  The stick didn’t touch the sabre, and there’s no way the ref could have seen the two of them, as the net was in the way, so why did he call it?

  105. Clay4bc says:

I have to wonder why Saint Carey isn’t in net tonight? Had his gel been deemed sufficiently set already? I mean. he’s has 2 shite games and one adequate one. He really needs to be in the pipes tonight to iron out those kinks.

So yes, I am seriously asking, for reasons stated in the original post. Why is he not in? I think he needs the work when it doesn’t matter. I notice you chose not to answer, and instead try to be cute. Or do you think Price has shown all he needs to in the preseason already?

Most positive comment so far. Thanks

  145. Clay4bc says:

Ok, I don’t know what raised the ire of the Defenders of the Price,
but this is fu*king ridiculous. I wake up at 7:30 am, see no news or
reports, and immediately torn on the game to see that Auld in in net. I question why
Price isn’t there, and mention Price needs the work and should be in,
and the Price Battalion attacks, with their battle cries of “troll”. How predictable…

Shilo was dead on below. It’s OK
to call out AK or pouliot, but even a hint of critique about the
Annointed one, and his rabid followers attack. Give it a rest, people.
Redirect your ire where it belongs. I just want to know the answer to my
question. If you don’t have the answer, shut the fu*k up. And Prime time, Sholi, and Newfie Dog, please always shut the fu*k up when it comes to my posts. Why do you even botther replying to me if all you want is a fight?

  147. _Habsoloutly_ says:

keep up the good work moderator’s.  you’re doing a bang up job here at HI/O.

  148. JIMVINNY says:

The reply that mentioned your “Saint Carey” tag was dead on.  It’s impossible to take something like that seriously, and when you are clearly trying to incite something, don’t act all surprised when it happens.

If you want a genuine answer, ask a legitimate question, without the vicious little barbs.

  149. SeriousFan09 says:

People who critique AK or Pouliot generally post other comments besides just their dislike of those two players. A few people around that don’t need to be named because it’s obvious dedicate 90% of their posts to bashing Carey Price and it gets rather repetitive and pointless, one-track minds with nothing to add.

  152. larisalapointe says:

relax man. as you see Ryan Miller isn’t playing either. It is just customary to give the back-up a chance to play a full game as well  before the season starts. Don’t read anything into it.

  153. scrowe21 says:

Yeah its brutal, you cant even mention Jesus Price on here without causing a shit storm. Some people just take offense to everything…its annoying.

My spinorama shootout goal with Cammy

  156. Clay4bc says:

    I see…you won’t answer because you know I am obviously correct.Fair enough.

I live how you and your ilk resort to the “troll” balel when your world view is questioned. Perhaps you should research exactly what a “troll” actually is – you will see it isn’t me. In fact, what you did here was far more troll-like.

  157. ManApart says:

Very nice period by Auld, I’m disappointed in Gio and Gomez this preseason. Nothing from them tonight and nothing much from AK and Pouliot either. They haven’t exactly shown they’re the men for the top 6. They should watch Pleky and learn what it means to compete.

  158. JIMVINNY says:

I could see White playing like that in a couple of years, just needs to put on a little more weight, and get more comfortable with the NHL game.

  159. habfab14120 says:

Really?  You don’t know?  I am not a Price-bot, nor was I a Halak-tite, but I can tell you that it was the “St. Carey” start.

I agree that he can use the time on ice, but if you were really curious about why he’s not there, perhaps next time ask without the snarkiness.

    Just a thought.

  160. ManApart says:

Who cares. If they don’t like someone’s critisism of Price, that’s their problem. It’s a free forum to state your opinion.

  161. Clay4bc says:

“Fool”? “Bash Price”? Son, I am far from a fool, and did nothing here to bash the man you have such a crush on.

LOl. You guys need to get a life. I think Price has had a pathetic 2 games, and one OK game. Is this not a fair assessment? I am perfectly correct in thinking he needs the work. Again, is this not the truth? If I was trying to incite the idiots (which I did anyway), I would have said something like “It’s a good thing Auld is in net, as he will be the starting goalie by Christmas anyway”.

What a bunch of sheep you are!

  168. JIMVINNY says:

Clay, why will you only respond to the members that are posting angry reponses?  There are a couple of serious answers, and you’re ignoring them completely.

  169. ManApart says:

If I disagree with what they are saying and think they’re off I’m aloud to state that, at the same time I never said they couldn’t state their opinion to begin with.

  170. Clay4bc says:

Yeah, the mods here are pathetic. They might as well just have none, and let us say whatever we want. As it stands, you can only say whayever you want if you love Price. Anyone else is free to take abuse, but not give it.

Its his MO he doesn’t like having discussions just arguments.

  172. Clay4bc says:

Where, Jimmy? I saw NO ONE rationally respond to what I actually asked. The serious answers said nothing more than the obvious – that it’s Martin’s call. I am well aware of that fact. I was hoping to go a little deeper.

If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.

    — George Orwell —

  173. JIMVINNY says:

Both myself and habfab told you exactly why you got such angry responses.  If you won’t acknowledge that, then like I said, don’t expect any rational answers.

  174. soflohabsfan says:

Deeper than what? It’s was Martin’s call Carey Price (thats how his name is spelt) gets New York and then starts in the opener in Toronto Thursday.

  175. Clay4bc says:

Oh, I see – you misunderstood. I understand quite well the angry responses. It’s hypersensitivity about Price because people are scared that he will fail after Halak was traded. Quite understandable, but also quire puerile.

What I was referring to was a response to my question, which still remains open.

So who plays with Gomez and Gionta? Most say AKost. Which begs the question. Can Gio and Gomez awaken the potential within Andre Kostitsyn?

  181. JIMVINNY says:

AK is a right wing.  He’s either playing with Pleks and Cammy, or traded.  Gio has the right wing spot on that line all locked up.

  182. Shiloh says:

I have always thought that Newfoundland dogs were the most beautiful breed. How sad that a profane little boy here has adopted that proud name.

how many penalties is that for subban over the last game and a half? Like 6?

  221. crabvader says:

Extremely bad penalty there. PK lifts the stick, Adam drops like a figure skater learning to skate and ref eats it up. Not complaining about the other ones but this was a pitiful call.

  222. ManApart says:

No wonder Subban’s name is PK, everytime he’s on the ice he puts his team on the PK.

Case in point. Of course it had to be you who proved him to be correct.

If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.

    — George Orwell —

  236. showey47 says:

I think subban is trying way too hard to impress. Almost to the point where it looks like he is trying to do too much himself. Especially on the PP. I’ve noticed a couple times today and in the game against the panthers when the habs were on the PP he would try to gain the zone by himself which results in his forwards either standing still on the blueline or throwing them offside. He needs to reel his game in. As for being benched, its hard to say. He has too much skill to have sitting on the bench and is a fan fav.,for the moment. If it was obyrne, well he would be sitting till sometime in the new year.

  237. hablifting says:

Hey I predict doom and gloom every year :)  I haven’t been wrong in 18 years.  Doing pretty well if you ask me.

  238. punkster says:

So last year was doom and gloom in your books? Hmmm.

  239. hablifting says:

Just checking in case I missed it.

Did we win the cup?  No?  Then the season was a failure.

Add to that the fact that we proved once again that we could not roll with a rough and tough team.

I’m sorry, but thats not good enough.  I would love nothing more then to be proven wrong.

  240. TommyB says:

I agree he’s trying too hard to impress.  But who does he need to impress?  He fit in very well when called up for the playoffs last year.  He should just think back to then, and keep it simple.  I worry about him trying to impress the people in the stands too much.  Might not be enough mustard in the Bell Centre if he keeps that up.  This is pre-season, so Martin won’t single him out by benching him, but if this continues when they drop the puck for real, Subban could be in for a rude awakening, skill or not.

  241. _Habsoloutly_ says:

Dean Dalley is back!!!!!!  Price’s biggest Fan/Loser.  yay!!

  242. punkster says:

If not winning the Cup is your tipping point for doom and gloom then I’m afraid nobody can prove you wrong, which is fine for you I’m sure. For me I accept that my favorite team won’t always do well, my kids won’t always get straight As, my car won’t start every single time I turn the key and my dog won’t always be able to hold it if I’m away from the house too long. I don’t sense a ton of doom and gloom in my life though.

No depth and definately not much offense or transition from the back end. PP suffers.

  274. Clay4bc says:

Great. But in the meantime, people need to relax on the hypersensitivity. It’s just laughable how just mentioning the term “Saint Carey” with nothing rude in a post gets fools going. Funny too…sorry guys, but I like that name. Is there a better nickmane for him? If so, let’s hear it. maybe it will catch on. No one complained with other players nicknames. Not like I’m calling him red-light or something, is it? it’s fun to watch though. maybe FOX will make a new show about it – “When idiots attack!”.

  303. JIMVINNY says:

Clay, you’re the one coming off as the idiot.  You’ve been hating on Price virtually his entire career.  Now he’s the number one, and he’s got the vast majority of the fans and team supporting him.  With your insistence on bashing him, you come across as one of those idiots that booed him 5 minutes into the first preseason game.

So by all means, continue, but don’t expect that the angry posts coming your way to diminish.  And whining about it only makes you look even worse.

  304. Chuck says:

Probably the best thing that boxing lessons would do would be to give him a willingness to get hit.

  349. joeybarrie says:

Tough to judge this team based on tonights performance. We have a back-up in goals, 3 goals against on the PK and our best PK players not playing. Missing Gorges, Gill, Pleks, Moen, Hamr, and Markov. Our 6 best PK players last season…

So let’s relax and wait till we play our full team. So none of this worries me.

What does worry me is I haven’t seen anything from AK or Pouliot. This is what will hurt this team this season. If we have 2 under performing top 6 players, then we will have trouble making the playoffs.

There may be other teams, but only ONE Club De Hockey…

  350. Harditya_CareyPrice says:

I hope he tries that against Evander Kane.

  353. crabvader says:

  354. JIMVINNY says:

Mcguire’s idiocy has no end.  With the weakness in the market for goalies that became apparent July 1st, how can he even begin to question the timing of the Halak trade?  Completely ignoring which goalie it was that got traded, whether it was Price or Halak, the trade was made at the correct time.

  355. Chuck says:

    Mcguire liked it…

  363. _Habsoloutly_ says:

    refs are bush tonight.

someone needs to reiterate the rules to them, you’re allowed to direct the puck into the net as long as you don’t kick it in.

  364. Harditya_CareyPrice says:

If either AK or Pouliot slack, Eller will be there to fill the gap but I don’t think that will be the case in the regular season. AK and Pouliot’s contracts expire after this season, so one would assume they will give all it takes. However if they do continue to float around like they did towards the end of last season, I highly doubt they will get re-signed (especially AK).

  365. Chuck says:

My guess is because he didn’t make contact with Max.

  366. crabvader says:

I’d rather he not get anything than if he would’ve connected with the hit.

    Little slimy bastard.

  367. SeriousFan09 says:

    – I shall always remember Captain Koivu.

  368. SeriousFan09 says:

Hey they have to practice disallowing legit goals, DET had 2 called off last week.

    – I shall always remember Captain Koivu.

  369. ManApart says:

You’re too quick to call people idiots. The timing of the trade could easily be questioned. it was done too quickly, Where no market was even built for Halak. Some GMs stated they weren’t even aware Halak was on the block. That’s unexcusable.

  370. twilighthours says:

42.1 Charging – A minor or major penalty shall be imposed on a player or goalkeeper who skates or jumps into, or charges an opponent in any manner.

He certainly jumped into Max.  Not sure if it matters that he missed.

  371. JIMVINNY says:

Gauthier knew what player he wanted.  If he got Eller, the player he was targeting, who cares who knew Halak was available?  Nothing inexcusable about it.

  372. ManApart says:

I don’t think there’s anyway Eller is ready to be a top 6 player. If he is, that goes a long way to exposing Montreal’s lack of depth in offensive talent.

  373. habs permanent bandwagon fan says:

if he had waited, he could have gotten a goal scorer.

    Eller why? because he’s cheap.

    Halpern why? because he’s cheap.

    Auld why? because he’s cheap.

    that’s your habs franchise.

get cheap untalented players, and raise ticket prices to see this crap!

  374. ManApart says:

It makes no sense not to try to create a bidding war. Maybe another team could have offered more, maybe St louis would have been forced to add to the deal. I think it was a bad move by Gauthier. As it stands, I think St Louis was the clear winner in the deal. They didn’t even have to give up a roster player or a top flight prospect.  If Gauthier didn’t care to hear any other offer’s because he wanted Eller so bad, then I think he’s a fool. It’s not like Eller is Pietrangelo or something.

  375. habs permanent bandwagon fan says:

Buffalo isn’t playing their best players either.

  376. showey47 says:

He went on the exact same rant right after the halak trade happened on nhlxm204 just before the draft. Pierre said brian burke would have waited longer and received a better return for halak. I then called in to the station and asked them to remind maguire that burke once had a guy named ilya bryzgalov and to ask maguire what burke got for him.

  377. habs permanent bandwagon fan says:

what talent? habs have 3 goal scorers total: Gionta, Pleks, Cammy.

    that’s it!

  378. Chuck says:

Ticket prices do not equate to salary cap.

  379. habs permanent bandwagon fan says:

Price is just as bad. habs have no goaltending. this team is in deep trouble. no offence or D either.

did habs score a PP goal this entire preseason?

  380. thebigguy says:

2 years ago, this team went on an uprecedented spending spree. I’m not sure the league has ever seen a time sign so many players the same day.

We signed cheap players this year becausae we lacked cap space. I don’t see how you can call a time that spends up to the ceiling cheap? Poor money management, perhaps, but cheap? No.

And  short of having traded Halak/Price a year ago when there was actually a market for goalies, before the draft was really the best time. We had the misfortune of having to trade a goalie at a time when goalies have never had such low value. Niemi barely found work. Nabakov had to go to Russia to play. Theodore is without a job. This idea that we could of traded for a top 6 forward is just foolhardy. Why expend a valuable and rarer resource such as a top 6 forward in exchange for any goalie, much less one that has half a season of top notch work on his resume.

Personally, I’m shocked Halak got the contract he did. It certaintly has the potential to be one of the worst contracts signed this offseason. It’s not Derek Boogard bad, but it’s close.

  381. ManApart says:

I know, that’s my point. There were obvious problems with scoring depth last season. Gauthier’s hands were tied because of the big money  paid out by Gainey the previous summer. So now secondary scoring is in the hands of pouliot and AK and hopefully a few by the 3rd line. Not a notion that gives one much confidence.

  382. ManApart says:

If Halak even comes close to what he did last season during the reg season and playoffs, I think it’s a great deal for St. Louis. Comparitively after last season’s performances, Price is only making 1 million less than Halak. That says it all, I think.

  383. SeriousFan09 says:

I stuck with the winning jersey but it doesn’t always stay hot or we’d have had a Cup Parade. Back to the standard home jersey for the Isles game.

    – I shall always remember Captain Koivu.

  384. Mark C says:

There’s a salary cap in this league, right?

  385. thebigguy says:

It’s not that I think that Halak isn’t a good goalie, he is.

But look at how much goalies are getting paid these days. Personally, I would not be willing to sign a single goalie not named Ryan Miller to a contract longer than 3 years. There is too much turn over. The era of dominant goalies is seemingly over. Instead, we have goalies who dominate for a year or 2 and then return to the middle of the pack. To Commit, what was it, 15 million to any goalie in this market is just foolhardy.

To then do it to a goalie who’s body of work is rather limited is even more dangerous. We still don’t know if Halak is a goalie who can do this on a regular basis or if this will be a statistical anomaly in an otherwise above average career. (don’t know what happened here to make font big and bolded)

Who will be this years Tim Thomas or Jose Theodore. You gotta say Halak is a candidate along with Niemi.

Carey can’t be because he’s yet to even peak. It’s apples to something that doesn’t resemble apples at all to compare a goalie in his late 20s to one in their early 20’s.

  386. ManApart says:

There is an element of gamble in  giving Halak a 4 year deal I’ll give you that, but I think it is a pretty good bet overall. Halak has never had less than a Good year in his life. Even if he’s good and not Excellent 3.75 a year isn’t that bad of a salary. I also think Price and Halak can definately be compared. Halak is only 2 years older and Price has more NHL experience. They for sure are in the same bracket of young guys like Rask, Quick and Varlamov. And btw, how do you know Price didn’t peak his rookie year? So far it does seem that way.

  387. thebigguy says:

Is there  a chance that Carey doesn’t return to form, for sure.

That being said, 22 year old goalies with that much raw skill should get better. Goalies in their late mid/late 20s tend not to.

  388. joeybarrie says:

I think the announcer is right. GOOD GOAL.  5-4, prime for overtime…

“Hey Richard, two minutes for looking so good!”

  398. habs001 says:

this team is a team that is still being build…2-3 years away from being a cup contender….dont forget this team was basically a 500 team over 100 games last year…with fewer injuries, improved play by some players and new additions this team should be better but that is not enough to make this a top 10 team this year….there will be games when the goaltending will be questionable, we still need at least one top d and there will be many nights we will struggle to score…we can still win the division i believe but we have to have a great record vs the teams in our division and probably we will basically split the series with our division rivals and yes even with the evil leafs…

  399. habs permanent bandwagon fan says:

    win a division? hahaha

try 14th   place in the entire eastern conference. that’s where I predict habs will finish.

    they’re just awful.

  400. ManApart says:

What is this, year 7 or 8 of Gainey/Gauthier’s 5 year plan? I’m holding back for a little bit, but if they end up around .500 or a little above like I think they will, I’m going on a major campaign to Molson to finally purge the organization of this management clique once and for all.

  404. thebigguy says:

That’s great resource management. It’ll really make other players want to sign here.

Hi, Alex, It’s Pierre, how you doing. Look, I know we signed you just about 3 months ago and you’ve yet to even have an opportunity to sit on the bench for a meangingful game but this isn’t working. You had a rough exhibition match. I get that you got yourself an apartment here but you let in 6 goals during an exhibition game.

Oh the worst part. We traded you to Edmonton.

  405. habs-hampton says:

“PK is garbage”.  That’s harsh! Oh, wait a minute, you mean the Penalty Kill (I think…).

But, seriously, Subban did not play very well, but he will have a lot of ups and downs this year.

  406. Shiloh says:

If Auld doesn’t play very well during the first period, they would have scored half a dozen. He allowed a very soft goal in the 3rd, but no softer than a couple of the ones that got by Price earlier in the pre-season.

We didn’t have three of our best defensemen dressed tonight, plus Cammy and Tomas Jagr.

  407. ManApart says:

Goaltending is a major question mark going into the regular season. Judging by the post season, In definately gives one huge concerns. I’m disappointed we didn’t get a better look at Sanford, he couldn’t have done worse than Price and Auld in a few of the games.

  408. avatar_58 says:

Hey don’t look at me, Gauthier did it. Just as bad as signing Spacek to this length – money that could have went to halak/moore/metro.

I have this very bad feeling that 95% of Auld’s starts are going to be losses is all. He fights the puck, can’t see rebounds, folds under pressure……any other faults? I mean until that glove save I was pretty afraid he didn’t even know how to use it.

  409. avatar_58 says:

I’m not much of a Sanford fan either but frankly he’s less jumpy than Auld.

  410. SeriousFan09 says:

Remember the days when Hamrlik and Spacek were regarded as the saviours on D when we were missing our MVP? Good times. Moore and Metro were replaced with Eller and Halpern, younger, more capable players for the team useful in more situations.

    – I shall always remember Captain Koivu.

  411. king ddd says:

news from the blues: agostini scores and halak saves 30 of 31 shots against the champs!

  412. sidhu says:

Not a pretty game for us at all.

I was particularly unimpressed with Spacek (horrible pre-season). Not a good game for OB either.

White and Henry, to me, deserve to stay on the team.  White had a great rush and brings grit.  Henry cleared out some bodies and can skate for a big man.  The odd man out I think will be Weber, he hasn’t brought it on the PP and is small.

  413. sidhu says:

Call me crazy, but I’d like to see Souray back on the team.  Our PP looks bad (esp with 5 on 3’s).  He loved playing here, can bring leadership, a big point shot, and is gritty.  Yes he has health issues, but we’re relatively deep on D with Henry, Weber, and Picard, not to mention Carle.  If we can strike a deal (instead of paying his full salary), I’m hoping we pick him up.

  414. SeriousFan09 says:

He’s increasingly fragile, a defensive sieve and the second Markov gets back the PP issues go away so we don’t need him.

    – I shall always remember Captain Koivu.

  415. Bill says:

Really looking forward to watching how Martin sucks the life out of Subban’s game this year.

    Full Breezer 4 Life

  416. SeriousFan09 says:

Glad I’m being proven right that we shouldn’t be ready to toss Markov aside because Subban has arrived. The guy’s 21 years old and he had PIM issues in the AHL last season, top 10 AHL scoring defencemen last season, only one other guy was close to his 82 minutes and the rest didn’t go over 60.

Subban will do fine, but his rough edges prove that he isn’t a lock to become No. 1 D overnight nor that he was ‘definitely ready’ at the halfway point of last season.

    – I shall always remember Captain Koivu.

  417. ManApart says:

Those D-men are one year older and I’m afraid it will show. Eller and Halpern have been far from proven to be more capable than Metro and Moore were last season. Jumping the gun on that one.

  418. SeriousFan09 says:

Halpern’s had some solid NHL years as a role-player and is a RH shot with a faceoff specialty, something the team really needs. Eller, I just see a lot more offensive options with him playing than Moore with more upside.

    – I shall always remember Captain Koivu.

  419. light_n_tasty says:

Our PP lives and dies with Markov.  End of story.

I thought I was alone in thinking that.

[Disclaimer]: I’m a hockey fan. I care about the habs, but probably not as much as you.

  423. G-Man says:

    Okay, sidhu. You’re crazy.

I think his better days are way behind him. He is done as an NHLer.

  424. Bash says:

One more “tuneup” and away we go!  May I  offer a few observations?

Although we have not seen a full lineup it is quite apparent that this will not be an easy ride to the playoffs unless we see miraculous improvements from some of our projects:

Pouliot is bigger and more aggressive but easily taken down, His goal scoring jinx continues as we have seen him miss from point blank range a dozen times in this preseason.

AK is simply the same as always with a little more drive… Talented for sure but impossible to predict.

Eller can skate and will be a solid player down the road but is not ready to wipe out memories of he who will not be named.

PK has all the tools and infectious enthusiasm…Martin’s leash will chafe this puppy.

White wants it badly and will provide spark. Can he play with that abandon for a full season? Will Martin even  keep him on the roster?

O’Byrne must play with Markov or we are doomed to 3-4 minutes of tentative and mistake prone hockey as he fears each shift will be his last.. We do need his toughness!

Oh Henry! You will play the opener and you will fight twice in that game. Good luck in Hamilton.

Darche…thank for a yeoman effort last season.

    Maxwell …not

    Next time… the core players

  426. StevieRay says:

HaHaHa…if only we were so lucky !!! if you play for Ruff …you play for Ruff nites off with this guy !!! old time hockey …

  427. SeriousFan09 says:

Blackhawks skated barely any of their regulars last night, no Toews, Kane, Keith, Hossa, Seabrook, Campbell or Sharp in the lineup.

    – I shall always remember Captain Koivu.

  428. redgorf says:

there are many young players onthe team that need persistant coaching, but wee don’t have the rigth coach J.M has never recieved any praise from any player or players active or retired as having made them the player…..s they are .So don’t expect improuvement of younger players that they are.

the fight for a playoff spot is on again.

  429. Thomas says:

So what?  Why should we as Habs fans give a crap whatever it is that’s happening over in the gateway to the west?

When are we finally going to stop talking about this!?  It’s done, he’s been traded so get over it, this is hockey it happens all the time.  Lets focus on our own team now.

  430. petrov14 says:

Correction: New captain is STILL 0-0.

  431. Mark C says:

    Tony, how ya been?

  432. thebigguy says:

In a division where the Islanders are choosing between a 40 year old and a guy with a glass groin, where the Leafs have 1 top 6 forward and are hoping that Giguere is the same goalie from 3 years ago and Atlanta has no galtending, top forwards or top 2 defencemen, I doubt the Habs will be last.

Competing for the final 3 playoff spots, sure.

  433. habs permanent bandwagon fan says:

sorry not Tony, just giving my honest opinion.

unlike others on this website, I’m not delusional.

  434. SeriousFan09 says:

It really hurts when your 1st-wave PK duo is missing from the lineup.

    – I shall always remember Captain Koivu.

Thanks, I didn’t realize it was a ‘premuim sports channel. Phoned Bell and for $5 bucks more a month I was on HD for the second and third periods.

I really disagree with most of your posts, and this one is no different. But, I will refrain from name-calling and actually try to engage you in some kind of debate.

I am tired of hearing people bring up Gainey’s 5-year plan as a way to show that he failed during his tenure as GM. I would have to go back and find the story on Gainey’s first press conference as GM, but did he really say they would win the cup within 5 years? To me, the 5-year plan was more about bringing this organization out of the depths of Hell that it was buried in by Rejean Houle and company in the mid-90s to early 2000s.

If we look at the roster Gainey inherited when he got here, it seems impossible for anyone to have built a Cup-winning team in 5 years out of that mess (without enjoying the benefit of multiple top 3 picks). Things were that bad.

What I see from the 5-year plan is a massive change. We went from missing the playoffs 80% of the time to making them 80% of the time (the one hiccup being a last-game elimination in a wild game vs the Leafs). That looks like a pretty good improvement to me.

Add to that the fact that we now have some actual prospects that we drafted playing on our team when before Gainey we were lucky to see one draft pick make it on the team every 5 years (exxageration, but not by much). Granted, we have made some drafting mistakes, particularly in the first round, but so have many other teams.

While we may not have won the cup yet, I think we are well on our way to becoming one of the perennial Eastern contenders, like New Jersey has been for so long. It’s hard to win the cup. At least we are in the playoffs every year (just about) with a chance to cause some upsets while we build ourselves into a true cup contender.

And really, what’s wrong with that?
