The Canadiens romped to their easiest win of the pre-season against a non-competitive opponent.
Minnesota was held to 14 shots – most of them in the last 10 minutes and only one in the decisive second period, when goals by Ryan White, Dustin Boyd and Brendon Nash blew the game open.
Coach Jacques Martin praised the line of Boyd, White and Max Pacioretty for their forechecking, effective use of speed and tenacity in jumping on loose pucks.
The coach said White had reported to camp in better shape after his off-season training. Martin said Boyd’s play has improved as camp has progressed, and praised Max-Pac for an improved understanding of what he has to do to be effective in the NHL.
As for a power play that was 0-for-6, including ineptitude in 5-on-3, Martin said his PP was adept at controlling the puck but had to get to the net more. Martin said the team’s new PP system, featuring a defenceman at the blueline and another in the high slot, is a work in progress.

I think he SHOULD be on the team. He deserves it and will add toughness. He worked hard in Hamilton last year.
SNIPE!!!
Thunder Bay’s own Alex Auld – and Tom Pyatt too. Throw in a whole bunch of Staals and it’s quite a hockey town.
Been rooting for Ryan since the 09-10 season ended, saw him in Hamilton and loved his spirit.

All I’m getting from CJAD is a clip from Beauty and the Beast. That about sums up last night’s game.

I didn’t even know he was on a tryout with them. Wow, talk about a guy falling off the radar.

I wonder, Boone, why you like “Clayton Stoner” as a name?

I used to love watching NFL, but I have maybe watched 2 hours in the last 5 years. Once the NHL got rid of most of the clutch-and-grabbing, hockey has become fun to watch again – even though I still watched during the tackle-era. Now we actually get to see talented players show what they can do. Can you imagine the numbers Lemiex would have put up if they called the holding and hooking? Can you imagine any other league allowing it – Michael Jordan reduced to mediocrity because some 4th-line bench warmer could tackle him at will?
Fragility not the issue, man. You don’t publicly rip your colleagues. Unprofessional and seriously c–ty behaviour.

Sad to hear Dandy is quitting. I will always remember the warrior who got up with a broken arm and continued to defend his net. Ironically, it was then-Flame now-Hab Dustin Boyd who checked him into the boards, resulting in the injury.
I’ve looked for You Tube video of that and haven’t found any. Anyone know where I can find a copy?

Last year they booed Mark Streit, a guy who always did his best and wanted to stay with us but was never offered a contract.
They’ve booed Saku. They booed Kovy last game. They boo Price.
They even booed Patrick freakin’ Roy.
LaT never asked to be traded. OK, he wasn’t good for us but he was a victim of circumstance in a way. Why on earth wold you boo the guy?

1) Streit was definitely offered two contracts by Montreal, the first was a lowball in November of his contract year and the second was for about 3 mil before he went UFA. Streit has talked freely about how he loved it in Montreal but he wanted to play defense, and Carbo absolutely refused to play him there. Dandenault used to complain about the same thing if you remember. Booing Streit is completely unjust.
2) Kovalev gave this team the runaround in negotiation, all the while talking about how he’d give a hometown discount, deserves to be booed.
3) Lats’ attitude last year earns him the boo treatment. And his whiney baby routine for the next 8 months makes it even worse. If he can be as mature this year as he was in his last interview today I would agree with you that he should no longer be booed.
No offence, but I have no recollection of fans explicitly booing Saku. Are you sure the fans weren’t booing one of the bum linemates that Saku frequently had to carry on his back?

Hey Gang,
Longtime reader, infrequent poster (HIO is, imho, a terrific hockey blog -compare, for example, the quality of the comments on the Globe’s new ‘Leafs Beat’).
Just a thought – it’s important to remember that exhibition games are chances for coaches, and assistant coaches, to experiment with new (and, perhaps, downright wonky) combinations and systems prior to the start of the season. From a coaching perspective, there’s more value in experimenting with various arrangements than in trying to, borrowing from The Wire’s vocabulary, “Juke the Stats,” goaltending or otherwise. We’re talking glorified scrimmages here – occasions to engage in the coaching equivalent of finger-painting. Terrible and fantastic performances by any individual, line, or defensive pairing should be taken with a grain of salt. We’ll have plenty of time – over 80 games’ worth – to evaluate all these things. So yes, let’s take the advice of our goalie this year and “chill” for the time being. Seriously.
nice post, I’m totally on board with you. And a high five for the Wire reference.
My biggest worry going forward is the D in their mid 30′s perhaps needing the pre-season and then some to reach the level of play the team will need from them. I seem to remember it being a struggle last October in that regard and another year can’t have helped. For now, it’s September though. Crunch time is still six months away!

go habs go!
The crazies are out on the post game show in CJAD.
I didnt see the game but it seemed Latendresse wa sinvisible. Not a fan of him myself but I do share many of the opinions expressed in the following extract taken from a piece on TSN written by people at “Canadian Press”.
While Lats may not be the best player to ‘cite’ he is the most recent of ‘big forwards’ who seemed to have been asked to play a style that did not suit their game.
“His success caused some hang-wringing in Montreal, which has had trouble developing big forwards with skill and looked to have let one get away in the six-foot-two, 230-pound Latendresse.
Fans had greeted him as a budding French-Canadian star when he joined the Canadiens as a 19-year-old in 2006-07 from the junior Drummondville Voltigeurs. But after a couple of middling 16-goal seasons, they started to get on his back when his goal production dipped.
The Canadiens wanted Latendresse to be a power forward who would throw hits and crash the front of the net, but he had more success as a straight-up offensive forward. Latendresse particularly excelled when Wild coach Todd Richards put him on a line with the talented Martin Havlat and used him on the power play.”
Thank god no more RIS

Okay so yesterday, when Habs were leading to 2-1, I decided to watch the match.
As I started watching, Sens started scoring.
Right now it’s 4-1….should I watch the match?
I’m sure that he’s a nice guy, and he makes a pretty decent sausage sandwich, but Sergio Momesso is a terrible replacement for Murray Wilson.
CJAD needs to look into another solution.
LOL! Give us Cammilieri and we might take Price off your hands.
Yesterday had nothing to do with you, I screwed up my jersey rotation which led to the loss, I’ve got the proper one on tonight.

You gotta be more careful, Robby!
He’s ok, I don’t mind him.
Murray was the man!
The torch be yours to hold it high!
Why do Rick Moffat and Sergio Momesso keep calling him Alexandre Pee-card?
Eberle is awesome, but on a more important note, I’m assuming you have your jersey rotation working properly tonight?
This is getting kind of silly. Minny player drags DD down by the back of his jersey, no call. Goes the other way, and the habs players get penalized for attempting a hit that doesn’t land.
NVM. Thought it was against us.
Totally agree. Hopefully he’ll get better at this as the season goes on.
When midway through the game you have four SHOTS and your opponent has four GOALS, you know you’re in trouble.
Evidently Team B is aces better than Team A. I don’t know what it is that they are doing but I want to see that in the regular season.
5-on-3 for the Habs now.
I switched on to RIS for the pre-season, thinking I’d give it a look. If this is the best they can do – they actually make a guy angry at them for their basement cable station approach. Once the real season starts, they’ve lost this customer.
ANOTHER 5 ON 3! Subban tripped.
You bet your ***.
Eberle will be a Koivu or Gionta in the NHL, won’t be a top-10 scoring star but he will always make the big play for his team.

Not that it matters. Our preseason PP is brutal.
So what do you guys think? If Price is dressed as backup might be a good idea to bring him in. We are comfortable ahead and he can gain some confidence and some fan love if he comes in ‘relaxed’ and plays well rest of way.
We seem to have game in hand so might be a good no pressure situation for him!

From the annals of Why Bother…?
So, RIS is handcuffed into showin’ us games this way. I get it. What I don’t get is that they’re apparently televisin’ about 40 regular season games and even some post-season action.
Why, I believe they’ll be hostin’ the Sabres-Sens matchup on October 8th. I can hardly f*****’ wait. Gonna crack a warm beer and chomp down on a big bowl of half-popped popcorn.

I agree about team B they never stop playing just kep plugging away, I would like to see this happen when the real season starts. This goalie is good to he has alot of movement around his net never seems to be still. GO HABS GO!!!!!!!!
Without a doubt, price is easily 2-0. Team B is much, much better then team A. Too bad the halak lovers are too dumb to see it.

Mayer is the backup, and Auld is supposed to go all the way
Is Price the backup?
If so I have a feeling about this game. Think Price is gonna play in the 3rd period if we are comfortably ahead.
respirez et d’être calme Montcalm!
I would love to have Clarkson on the team…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WN_kZzxrSLE
If Lars plays on the 2nd line with G-Love and Gio, Clarkson would fit in nice with Lapierre and Moen. That would leave Benny as the odd man out, which I’m fine with if we have Clarkson. Fourth line – Pyatt-Boyd-Halpie
has anyone else seen the comparison that leblanc looks like the second coming of mike ribeiro?
#71 and skinny as hell…
lets just hope leblanc doesn’t walk down the path of the cockiness, which it doesn’t seem like he’s headed to…but then again i don’t care as long as he’s scoring at a ppg like ribeiro has don in 2 of his last 3 seasons.
surprisingly leblanc goes out there and throws some hits, but i wonder if that’s his natural style, or is he trying to show the management brass a different part of his game..
- I support Carey Price as the Number 1 Goalie!
I’d be worried if he was spotted on Crescent Street with Pierre Dagenais. Until then, I’ll take the #71 to be a coincidence.
ET LA BUUUUUTTTT!!!
*edit* x3!!!!
Go Habs Go!
Good screen by White.
Ryan White with the deflection, make room for him Jacques!

Now it’s Boyd! Pluggers are ripping up the Wild wide open

Goal support is a beautiful thing. Nice work by Boyd.
Its nice when you pot some goals and don’t leave your own goalie hung out to dry with breakaways and endless odd man rushes.
SWEEET!!! 4-1
Another score and I missed it (((
It’s that type of skill play that gets me excited about Boyd on the bottom-6 this year.
Team B for all remaining pre-season games please.

Or you know, make some damn cuts and mix it up. Gill is not a top d-man, and no offence to Gorges but the man can’t do it all himself.
GO …Team B GO !!!!!
Any sport that has fat dudes masquerading as professional athletes I have no respect for. Professional athletes are supposed to be the fittest people on the planet, these guys are an embarassment. Not to mention there’s one arrested every week, great role models they are. Oh and one game per week, how ever do they do it
11 minutes of action would be a very generous number
And only one game a week. I can’t really get into a sport that only plays one game per week. Don’t see the point in it.
60 player-rosters, with a bunch of guys only playing 30 seconds of game time, and even then only to get run into.
That’s what I was getting at, but didn’t want to be accused of being a Price apologist. Even in this game, the one goal Minny has came off a terrible sequence in the Habs zone. But when they’ve only given up four shots, it’s easy to overlook the one mistake.
Lol you talk about these games as if the coaching staff actually really care about winning the games…they are evaluating prospects and players…These games are meaningless for guys like Gill and Georges…
Yes Sean Avery does get away with alot reason?.SUPERSTAR!!!!!!! but he is not the only SUPERSTAR to be given this privilege. It drives you nuts when you see this happen, the non SUPERSTARS are given all the penalities some I do not agree with, what can you do.I yell at my TV.
I read that article about Sean Avery… if Paul Devorski really did give Avery a misconduct “because he went after a superstar,” when Kovalchuk and Avery were jawing at each other, then Devorski should be suspended. Devorski’s refereeing was poor during the playoffs last year and that kind of behavior is not acceptable. The NHL is well-known for giving preferential treatment to its stars, when in reality there should be one rulebook for everyone. If Ovechkin hits from behind, the suspension should be the same as when Lapierre does it. And if Kovalchuk goes after Avery, the penalty should be the same as if Avery goes after Kovalchuk.
Pre season amateur hab hockey hour beats ameriball any day in my books
Gui will be booed, Auld won’t be booed, Gio and Gomer will be the consummate pros and hopefully AK shows up.
We’ll wait impatiently if you’re late
OOH AAH – HABS ON THE WARPATH!
You’re probably alone in your hate of football.
With you there, 3 hours for 11 minutes of action, what a waste.
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu.

All is well with Mr. Auld.
Willy you’re back! I missed you bud – and your creative avatars!
Price
The torch be yours to hold it high!
Oh man Jimmy – I thought that picture was awesome until you mentioned THAT. Hahaha.
What’s your take on the Halak TRADE, little man?
Hiya, missed you and your ninja baby too!
1:45 left… all is good with Mr. Auld.
The Wild Euro is a fighter – he fought 9 times in one season of the AHL
Is the score 4-2?
4-3
Minny scored 2 goals in the 3rd period.
Wow Engqvist! What a snipe
Enqvist – alright!!
Am I crazy to be worried about the habs D this year.. I am a little concerned with the depth and us being very thin if more injuries hit.
PP to the Habs, should be a little more interesting with Subban to work it.
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu.

Defensive breakdown, what a shock. Not Auld’s best effort, either. Didn’t seem to be expecting that one.
calisse.
