The closers

After twice blowing two goal leads, the Canadiens get three unanswered in the third period and rack up a rarity: a home-ice win.

Third period goals by Andrei K, Kyle Chipchura and MICHAEL RYDER (two tonight!)

They’re undefeated at the Bell Centre in 2008.

Facing an unaccustomed scrum of cameras and microphones in the winning room, Ryder modestly talked about "just hanging around, looking to find room" in front of the Tampa Bay net for the second-period laser that brifly made it 3-1.

"We all want (Ryder) to go well," said Alex Kovalev. "I’m happy to see him get his confidence back. Everybody’s been in his shoes before, going a long time without a goal. Then you get the feeling and touch back."

Four of Canadiens’ six goals – including all three in the third period – were scored at even-strngth.

"We can’t wait for power plays," Kovalev said. "We have to work hard 5-on-5 and get our confidence.

"After the second period in the llockerroom everybody knew we didn’t work in that period. They scored good goals, but we mostly gave them the goals. We knew if we played the third period like he first, we’d score goals."Β

  1. Habs-Kat says:

Ryder with tons of patience. Very niiice.

  2. Naila Jinnah says:

Oh yeah! Rydes gets a point! And Kovy is now officially in the game!

  3. The Teacher says:

yeah, that was can’t score here!

Funyy how it happens when ryder finally gets quality PP time

  4. Shawn S says:

    Bobby who!!

  5. sidhu says:

Wow, the crowd is still buzzing after that move by Kovy. He broke that guy’s ankles.

Give Kovy the “C” to keep. Yes, I said it.

  6. The Teacher says:

Wow, is this like only the second 5 on 3 we’ve had all year?

  7. sidhu says:

Mark Orr going coast to coast!

  8. CHiggins says:

it’s definitely not the same at home, is it?

come on guys…pretend ur in florida

  9. The Teacher says:

    ouch…nuff said.

  10. Habs-Kat says:

    The Detroit Debacle.
You can tell I wasn’t having a lot of fun.

  11. Shawn S says:

    Imagine Komisarek with a point shot?!? :O :O :O

  12. sidhu says:

Great D by Hamrlik in front of the net

  13. The Teacher says:

  14. Shawn S says:

With that being said, Lapierre wins a faceoff during the TB powerplay, then makes a nice steal in the TB. But definenlty agree with you.

  15. The Teacher says:

One is a guy I absolutely hate..Dave Jackson.

  16. The Teacher says:

Well, Lappy’s bigger, and I’m sure Vinny would win a lot of faceoffs against most players.

Nice new pic btw, what game was that at?

  17. sidhu says:

Come on Captain K, a dinky holding call

  18. yathehabsrule says:

    Who are the Refs tonight?

  19. Habs-Kat says:

I’m not a fan of playing Max against Lecavalier. Lapierre is not too strong in the faceoff circle and the key against the big line is to maintain puck control.

  20. The Teacher says:

aww, man..Dave Jackson, I hate that son of a ….

  21. bsharp says:

Both Kostitsyn’s have great talent. I can’t wait to see how they’re playing 20 games from now!

  22. Keith says:

Great pace to the game though πŸ˜‰

  23. Shawn S says:

I really hope Koivu comes out with a big game. I love the fact Sergei K is on a line with him too. e

  24. Keith says:

Being too fancy again. Gotta shoot that puck!

  25. Habs-Kat says:

Oh how I wish he would just shoot more often.

  26. CHiggins says:

uh-oh…lightning came to play today..and max did NOT look good on that shift…

  27. Keith says:

That was too close for comfort.

  28. linp says:

Ryder just gave the puck away. That leads to that scoring chance

  29. yathehabsrule says:

Too much treme-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-lo from the anthem singer!

  30. Shawn S says:

WElcome to the wonderful world of RDS HD. Don’t speak a lick of french, but let them take you on a ride with the emotion the guys put on calling the game. You’ll never go back to Bob and Harry.

  31. PattyBoy31 says:

This is my first game I get to watch on RDS, and HD, I’m pumped, to bad I’m not bilingual.

  32. bsharp says:

The Habs offense (and chances of winning) goes as Kovalev goes. Here’s hoping he takes the Molson Cup every month!

  33. Habs-Kat says:

    Yay! RDS is back!

  34. Fer_hab says:

I think Eric Engels’s blog says it best

“It’s a new year, and it’s time for a new attitude. Everyone needs to look at the big picture, and believe by the end of it the Habs will compete as hard as they can. They need to be encouraged at home, where they’ve struggled. No amount of booing will cure they’re play at home. There is a lot to accomplish in the final 43 games. The Habs still have to play Ottawa six times! It’s clear that a winning home stint can play a major role in securing the Canadiens post-season hopes. As fans, do your part to make it happen. Make the Bell Centre the most difficult building to play in–for the opposing teams!”

  35. FeverBoy says:

nyaaa, way to drop the engle’s bomb. Eric has the right view on this one, be rabid crazy habs fans, but lets back our team, give them confidence to grow, experiment be creative.. Booing them will destroy the development or at least retard it.
Ok, so none of our young kids look like crazy superstars (yet), but look at the solid depth our youth will most definetly be, and im very excited for the future. We could have the best players in the world like kovalchuk, and Lecalvalier etc, but look at the teams they play on, there is no depth or chemistry from the other lines. Let the kids grow up together, get rid of the vets as the young kids show more promise and fill the line up with franchised developed players.
i think the next UFAs come available will be much more excited to play for us, at least we only hope …In Bob we trust….

  36. likehoy says:

I think the reason why we’re not as good at home this year is cause our young guns are trying to play for the crowd too much. They get up and pressure themselves because they want to show off. It’ll get better with experience.

  37. showey47 says:

we need to become a better team at home because 8 of our last 12 games of the season are at home. You can pretty much guarantee that with the eastern conference being so tight it will come down to the last week of the season. |Just like eric engels said, the fans need to make it tough for the opposition at the bell center, not tough for the home team.

  38. CHiggins says:

The guys have got to understand that it’s useless to try to impress the crowd and give a “show”. You gotta stick to the game plan and the best way to cheer up a crowd is to offer them a win…

    Go Habs Go

  39. Fer_hab says:

Stick to the game plan. Our 25th Banner is the only thing that can SATISFY US. (Very SAD BUT F’EN TRUE)

  40. Bill says:

I don’t think there’s any particular reason that the Habs have struggled at home or excelled on the road this year. A couple of different bounces and things would look totally different. If it’s actually something as simple as the players getting rattled by the fans, well, I would expect professional hockey players to be made of sterner stuff!

  41. Keith says:

I find the Habs try to be way too fancy at home. I wouldn’t say they get rattled, although you make a good point, they just have to stick to the game plan. Simple as that :-)

  42. Bill says:

The Lightning would love to trade Richards, mainly for his contract, but I wouldn’t bite. That said, I’d much rather have Richards at 7.8 per year than Patrick Marleau at 6.8 per year.

  43. Habs-Kat says:

Makes me wonder – how much cap space do the Habs have as of today?

  44. Naila Jinnah says:

Mike, your post titles are always awesome.

  45. linp says:

    3.748 million

  46. Bill says:

kovy gets the goal, but nice play by Ryder!

  47. CHiggins says:

KOVY!! woo-hoo! too bad it was when the 5 on 3 was done
    give him the C NOW

  48. The Teacher says:

People need to relax with giving Kovy the C. I’m still too disgusted with his effort from last year to even consider giving it to him full-time.

  49. Keith says:

It’s about bloody time they scored LOL! Great patience by Ryder who has been showing signs of life now.

  50. The Teacher says:

    A monster shift by Chipchura!

  51. bsharp says:

He’s so solid on the puck.

  52. Habs-Kat says:

Chipchura’s a horse. More than just a pretty face :)

  53. CHiggins says:

you have a point there…but with Koivu’s regular o-zone lazy penalties, habs fans arent too pleased with the captain…

  54. sidhu says:

So you object to Carbo having given Kovy the “C” for the Rangers game? What about him having the “A” tonight? Carbo himself noted that Kovy has been one of the best, if not the best, Hab this year.

  55. The Teacher says:

No objection for the Ranger game, although I suspect it’s cause he played there.

It’s easy to show leadership when you’re doing well, it’s when you’re not that I care about. He didn’t show me anything last year, so I’m not gonna fall over myself praising him this year. In my opinion, he owes us 4.5 million dollars.

  56. sidhu says:

I agree that Kovy’s reported comments were regrettable, though I can understand people’s frustrations with the current Captain (missing the playoffs four out of seven years under his captaincy and, it seems, his diminishing relevance on the ice this year). I can also understand, with the offensive play of others and his reputation throughout the league, calls for him to be shipped — the potential return may outweigh what he actually provides to the team. The torch has been passed to Koivu. We can all appreciate what he has done with it (e.g., coming back from illness and injury), but what is he capable of doing with it going forward? Some may have more faith that Kovy has greater potential to excite fans and spark the rest of the team. Others are waiting for when the torch will be passed to Higgins. I think some are willing to accept that we are in a transition phase and that Koivu is, at best, a second line center. I mean no disrespect whatsoever, but I tend to agree.

  57. The Teacher says:

  58. Bill says:

Yes, awesome play. Smart work by Markov too.

  59. Chuck says:

“Vote Saku for All-Star… or little Timmy gets it!!!”

  60. Naila Jinnah says:

GO Higgy!!!!! Saku’s on fire tonight too… I forgive him for his penalty!

  61. Keith says:

    Higgy!!! WHAT A GOAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  62. sidhu says:

The Tampa color guy is gonna have a heart attack. He is not happy with the officiating. Oh well.

  63. The Teacher says:

BTW Nice smartness by Kostops in not retaliating to give us a PP.

  64. CHiggins says:

This is why Chris Higgins is my fave player…great play by Koivu too…although im still not over his penalties

and the Habs have taken over…:D

  65. Chuck says:

    Well, THAT was better!

“Vote Saku for All-Star… or little Timmy gets it!!!”

  66. sidhu says:

Nice period boys! Carbo, please don’t go into prevent D!!

  67. linp says:

Kovy is still the best puck handler.

  68. CHiggins says:

Good thing we had those PPs…really took control from there on

  69. The Teacher says:

Kovy doesn’t care about molson, he wants STANLEY, or so he just said

  70. Bill says:

Man, Kovalev just embarrasses guys, doesn’t he? Should be in the top ten every year. There’s a pretty good article on him on if you’ve got the time.

End of the period, listen to the crowd roar, that has to feel good!

Does anyone know what the buzz was on Carbo starting Huet again? I expected him to go with Price. What is this, three in a row for Huey?

  71. CHiggins says:

RDS points out it was Kovy’s 350th goal…congrats

  72. Chuck says:

Never mind the Molson Cup… it’s nice to hear Kovy talking about wanting the STANLEY CUP.

“Vote Saku for All-Star… or little Timmy gets it!!!”

  73. PattyBoy31 says:

yeah, haha, he looked like he induced a few pulled groins for the tampa bay lightning in the first there πŸ˜€

  74. The Teacher says:

Four I believe. no problem with that, he is our starting goalie. Price IS a rookie. Give stardom time!

  75. Moey says:

Love the interview with Kovy, what did you change to improve your game this year? Duuhh, I decided to play.

  76. Ed says:

No, it’s 4 I believe. Price last played against Dallas.

  77. Habs-Kat says:

There’s a point being made here that Huet is the number one goalie and the coaching staff is not on the edge of their seats waiting for him to slip up a bit so that they can push Price in. I like it.

  78. sadave says:

    That’s right!! Keep the agressiveness going . . . get under Vinnie’s skin some more . . . force their D . . . I actually saw some net-crashing!

    Go Habs

  79. StillattheMapes says:

Who is this little RDS dude that tells Kovalev all about the “easy” goals? Twice now. Aren’t you lucky. Just stop this segment……

  80. Ed says:

It’s 55% on the faceoffs & Lapierre has won 3 of 7. Both are big improvements over the last 3 games. Koivu is 5-0, not bad after the flu bug.

  81. The Teacher says:

    No doubt!

  82. Chuck says:

It would be nice to see him get another 150 for the CH!

“Vote Saku for All-Star… or little Timmy gets it!!!”

  83. Moey says:

I’m pretty sure Carbo said he would stick with the winning goalie, 2 wins and a tie for Huet in the last three.

  84. Chuck says:

Those are the kinds of goals that I want to see Latendresse getting: 35 goals travelling a total of 40 feet.

“Vote Saku for All-Star… or little Timmy gets it!!!”

  85. Bill says:

Yes, it’s probably time to put the eggs in one basket or the other. It’ll be interesting to see how it plays out, mainly regarding Huet’s upcoming free agency. Keep Huet at whatever it will cost? Or hope Price is ready for the big-time next year? If it were up to me, I have no idea what I’d do.

  86. The Teacher says:

Haha Bill, at least you’re honest. It is a tough decision, but it’ll work out, even if we lose him, we gain cap space. No two ways about it.

  87. sidhu says:

Wow, Huet did not move. Flashbacks to the shoot-outs.

  88. Naila Jinnah says:

Did he move? Was he blind?

It’s okay. We’ll get it back.

  89. The Teacher says:

Huet seems psyched out every time there is a breakaway now. wonder what’s going through his head. I think he is overthinking instead of just reacting.

  90. Bill says:

Huet must’ve thought it was the shoot-out already. Never moved!

  91. DYCSoccer17 says:

Vinny whiffs on breakaway while Huet is praying the puck just hits him.

  92. Moey says:

He’s like a deer caught in the headlights.

  93. Chuck says:

    And overtime breakaways.

“Vote Saku for All-Star… or little Timmy gets it!!!”

  94. PattyBoy31 says:

    he moved there πŸ˜€

  95. Bill says:

Maybe he just decided to stop the shut-out jinx-talk before it started.

  96. Chuck says:

Can we not call a time-out mid-breakaway and change goalies?

“Vote Saku for All-Star… or little Timmy gets it!!!”

  97. The Teacher says:

At least he reacted on this one…but what the HECK are our defense-men doing with Vinny on the ice, talking about a hot chick three rows up or what?

  98. RobΒ² says:

Just enough for the save… phew… close one.

  99. Bill says:

Radical Defensive Strategy Proposal: stop letting Lecavalier have breakaways? Just throwin’ it out there.

  100. StillattheMapes says:

c**ti wake up this is the 2nd period, not mapes hockey

  101. Habs-Kat says:

I know whenever I was made to play goalie (which was all the time) with my brothers, I always closed my eyes and hoped the shots wouldn’t hurt. Maybe Huet’s like that. Confidence issue!

  102. The Teacher says:

Well kinda hard to get confidence when everyone in Montreal is harping on how bad he sucks in shootout and breakaways!

  103. Chuck says:

If he’d stop sucking on them, we’d stop harping on him! πŸ˜‰

“Vote Saku for All-Star… or little Timmy gets it!!!”

  104. The Teacher says:

positive reinforcement vs negative..i know what I’d prefer.

  105. Bill says:

While you ladies are drooling, you forgot that he’s also very wealthy, and has the inside scoop on getting you season tickets.

  106. The Teacher says:

Hahaha, and I’m sure he won’t ask for much in return for those tickets either..

  107. Habs-Kat says:

Haha, the average Jane’s got no chance.

  108. The Teacher says:

Well, if it’s any consolation, We don’t think you’re just an average Jane over here πŸ˜‰

  109. Naila Jinnah says:

I kinda like Ramo. Just not against us.

  110. Shawn S says:

Is there a stat that shows how many penalties a player draws from the opposing teams? Kovalev has to lead in that category. Oh and in neutral zone give aways. πŸ˜›

  111. The Teacher says:

I doubt that, only because the ref’s never call infractions made against Kovy

  112. Ed says:

Scroll down to the 2nd article on December 4. Higgins was the top Canadien then in penalties drawn vs. penalties called against him.

  113. The Teacher says:

    and that was NOT offside!

  114. Keith says:

For the love of God I wish to F^%$ these guys would shoot instead of pass the puck.

  115. The Teacher says:

    Sergei on the point..I LOVE!

  116. CHiggins says:

we should try kovy there … would be great

  117. Bill says:

The Lightning play a really small, tight box, gives the Habs PP all kinds of room. Hope they keep taking penalties. I’m expecting a crappy even-up call any second now, though.

  118. The Teacher says:

mais non, Kovy’s spot is on the boards. Has been since his Pittsburgh days and he works JUUUSSST fine over there.

  119. CHiggins says:

he’s really predictable on the boards…i wonder why teams cant stop him..

  120. The Teacher says:

haha cause if you cheat one way he takes your jockstrap the other?

  121. The Teacher says:

Chipper’s having a good, good game

  122. The Teacher says:

    WHAT A FREAKING SHOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111

  123. sidhu says:

    That’s the Ryder we know!!

  124. Naila Jinnah says:

    GO GO GO!!!!!

Okay, lets control the positivity… be less optimistic so we don’t get hurt.

  125. CHiggins says:

WOOOOOOOOO The Michael Ryder I know is back! πŸ˜€

  126. Chuck says:

That’s Sixpence None The Richer, Mike.

    Oh, and what a shot!!!

“Vote Saku for All-Star… or little Timmy gets it!!!”

  127. Keith says:

Now THAT is the Michael Ryder we all know and love :-)

  128. Shawn S says:

Thats the Ryder we know and love!

  129. Shawn S says:

    Great minds?

  130. RobΒ² says:

wow… his first goal at home this year.

  131. sidhu says:

    Nice hit by Cube!

  132. Keith says:

LOL…Good one Naila, the voice of reason.

  133. The Teacher says:

Anyone else think Komi wants a tryout with Liverpool?

and I love when the fans are buzzing like this.

    THIS is Montreal hockey.

  134. Chuck says:

    Hauled down Gui… no penalty!

“Vote Saku for All-Star… or little Timmy gets it!!!”

  135. Bill says:

What action! The big ovation for Ryder, the Bouillon hits and subsequent “Bouillon” chant, Kovalev, Koivu, and Sergei all looking fancy, wow. End to end stuff. And is that a Habs’ penalty? Here come the even-ups.

  136. CHiggins says:

    ouch…this one is not over

  137. The Teacher says:

Ah well, long shift by the forwards, huet had no chance on that one.

  138. Chuck says:

    Geee… couldn’t see that coming…

“Vote Saku for All-Star… or little Timmy gets it!!!”

  139. PattyBoy31 says:

why the hell is Lecavalier being booed. Typical :(

  140. The Teacher says:

Cause he’s not on our team?

so yeah, I’d say it’s typical, what a weird comment.

  141. CHiggins says:

and then habs fans wonder why he wont sign with us…
    just plain stupid…

  142. sidhu says:

Winter Classic, Shminter Classic — this is real hockey.

  143. PattyBoy31 says:

why don’t we boo every player thats on their team then? Theres a few people booing JUST him when he touches the puck, is he = to lindros now?

  144. The Teacher says:

Is Sergei being punished? or is Ryder for scoring?

  145. The Teacher says:

Where the heck was our team on that one? we only had 2 guys on the freaking ice?

  146. CHiggins says: words…this is getting ugly.

  147. Shawn S says:

Ugh, I feel sick. Gotta handle that pass!

  148. Chuck says:

“Vote Saku for All-Star… or little Timmy gets it!!!”

  149. The Teacher says:

He said he didn’t want to play here and was happy in Tampa. so boo him for all I care. He’s not with us, he’s against us.

i’d rather they boo him than our players!

  150. DYCSoccer17 says:

get off your damn knees Cristobal

  151. The Teacher says:

ok, put the blame where it belongs, on the defense-men making the pass or the forwards having a picnic somewhere in the arena.

  152. sidhu says:

Another good shift by the Chipper line

  153. CHiggins says:

    when is price coming in?

it seems cristo cant handle 4 games in a row…although he had no chance on the second goal

  154. Keith says:

Very bad defensive play by Cube and Gorges.

  155. sidhu says:

Anyone think we should shadow Vinny, with Lapierre perhaps? Carbo used to shadow the opposing team’s best player all the time (e.g., Gretz in the ’93 finals). As it stands now, Vinny is flying.

  156. Bill says:

I think they ARE trying to shadow him with Lapierre!

  157. The Teacher says:

    Man, Naila was right…shoulda listened.

  158. CHiggins says:

    HUGE PK…holding my breath

  159. Bill says:

On the bright side:the Habs will now abandon the ‘defensive shell’until they score another goal.

Huge kill here: tough call, but I think it evens thing ups in the penalty department.

Habs have to start winning draws. They lost every draw on the last PK and got scored on.

  160. Habs-Kat says:

On a more cheerful note, I like the music being played at the Bell tonight :)

  161. sidhu says:

    “Oh marone.”
    – Paulie Walnuts

  162. Chuck says:

Can we PLEASE win a D-zone faceoff for once?

“Vote Saku for All-Star… or little Timmy gets it!!!”

  163. CHiggins says:

    don’t think its possible…

  164. CHiggins says:

    Another Huge PK

    Game is slipping away

  165. Bill says:

Oh, no … and Markov had all kinds of time. That’s a suck-ass penalty. Win some draws!!

  166. sidhu says:

Has Gorges played after the 3rd TB goal?

  167. Habs-Kat says:

Notch another PD (Penalty Drawn) for Kovalev.

  168. Shawn S says:

Kovalev with his league leading number of penalties he’s drawn. Gotta love him.

  169. Bill says:

Is he waving off that penalty????

  170. MikeL says:

I wish the NHL kept a drawn penalties stat. Cause it would be scary how many Kovalev has drawn.

  171. Keith says:

Isn’t that a delay of game penalty as well??

  172. The Teacher says:

I dunno why they didn’t call that. it didn’t seem to go off the “baie-vitre” to me.

  173. Chuck says:

Yep. I guess time expired before the puck made it into the crowd…

“Vote Saku for All-Star… or little Timmy gets it!!!”

  174. Naila Jinnah says:

    Ref called deflection.

  175. fun police says:

huet looked like the stick goalie for the table top hockey game on the third one. what was that? inching over with his glove straight out to his side!!

  176. The Teacher says:

deflection off of what? le baie-vitre? LMAO

  177. Chuck says:

It would be nice to get one replay challenge per game.

“Vote Saku for All-Star… or little Timmy gets it!!!”

  178. Chuck says:

Replay showed that wasn’t even CLOSE to a deflection!

“Vote Saku for All-Star… or little Timmy gets it!!!”

  179. Chuck says:

And he looked like a table-top goalie with a missing handle to move him on the first one…

“Vote Saku for All-Star… or little Timmy gets it!!!”

  180. Chuck says:

On the bright side, we’re not trailing going into the third.

“Vote Saku for All-Star… or little Timmy gets it!!!”

  181. Bill says:

Three goals against in one period, that’s the same old Habs at home. Lecavalier gets a breakaway, St. Louis gets an easy one on the PP, and then Bouillon and Gorges just serve one up. Habs are lucky it’s tied!

Predictions? I’m looking for Ryder to score the winner, 6-5 in overtime. Hat trick for the Newfie.

  182. The Teacher says:

Hey Mike, your keyboard keys sticking toggether orr soommethinngg?

  183. Bill says:

Wow, I’ve seen you defend worse goals allowed by Price, Chuck! What’s your last name anyway? Does it rhyme with ‘trice’? :)

  184. Chuck says:

That’s what happens when you spill your vodka on your keyboard. TTrustt me on tthat one.

“Vote Saku for All-Star… or little Timmy gets it!!!”

  185. The Teacher says:

haha or in mike’s case, a little Guinness perchance?

  186. Bill says:

I’d like to deflect something off his head.

  187. Chuck says:

TB has been lucky an opportunistic, that’s for sure.

“Vote Saku for All-Star… or little Timmy gets it!!!”

  188. The Teacher says:

You and me both. Of course it was Mr. Dave Jackson, I can’t stand him.

  189. Chuck says:

Two games in a row Huet has been absolutely frozen with an opposing player in the clear. Unfortunately, I see a trend. Love him otherwise, though.

“Vote Saku for All-Star… or little Timmy gets it!!!”

  190. Bill H says:

Well, it will be interesting to see how they come out for the third. Do they have enough character to overcome this little setback? Stay tuned.

  191. Chuck says:

“Vote Saku for All-Star… or little Timmy gets it!!!”

  192. Ed says:

Koive is 10-2 on face offs, by far the best Canadien. Lapierre & Latendresse have 4 hits each, Lapierre has a blocked shot, Komisaerek has 3 hits & 3 blocked shots, Bouillon 3 hits, & Markov has 2 hits & 2 blocked shots. The hits are 26-18 for Montreal.

  193. sidhu says:

haha I think he may have hit the bottle after Gorges was on the ice for the 3rd TB goal.

  194. linp says:

Hope Carbo didn’t punish K2. A penalty against Montreal was expected at that time with Montreal leading by 2 goals.
Bouillon played a bad period. He left the box on the 2nd goal and created a 2 on 1. He made a bad pass on the 3rd goal.

  195. Moey says:

This Bell Centre problem isn’t new, didn’t they win 2 playoff games in Carolina and then blow the next 2 at home? I know Saku got injured, but maybe that was not the only part of it.

  196. Moey says:

Yeah, stay tuned for “As the Stomach Turns”…well mine will be.

  197. Ed says:

    Very astute observation. LOL.

  198. Bill says:

No, the problem goes back to the opening of the Molson Centre. What is their record all time at the Molson/Bell Centre? Anyone know?

  199. Chuck says:

Interesting replay on the Vinnie goal… just a bit offside, eh?

“Vote Saku for All-Star… or little Timmy gets it!!!”

  200. Bill says:

Why couldn’t they bury one there?!?

    Ryder looks dangerous.

  201. Bill says:

The NHL should hire two guys per game to monitor offsides at the blue lines. We could call them “linesmen”. What do you think?

  202. sidhu says:

Koivu’s first shift? 5 mins in?

  203. Bill says:

Bouillon coughed up another there. Come on Habs!! GHG!!

  204. Chuck says:

Now there’s an idea with legs!

“Vote Saku for All-Star… or little Timmy gets it!!!”

  205. Keith says:

Why can’t we make a tape to tape pass??

  206. The Teacher says:

Weak clear by Skost. He’s having a sub-par night.

  207. The Teacher says:

they were 50-25 the last two years at home.

  208. yehaken says:

Well, ir was getting near choking time (hope this is the reverse jinx).

  209. The Teacher says:

    Away tabarnac!

  210. The Teacher says:

  211. Moey says:

I say let’s move back to the Forum.

  212. The Teacher says:

    If only we could :(

  213. Chuck says:

Size has nothing to do with it. Perrault’s the best, and he’s not exactly a hulking figure.

“Vote Saku for All-Star… or little Timmy gets it!!!”

  214. sidhu says:

Bullet!! Just as the ole chant was starting up!

  215. Shawn S says:

  216. Chuck says:

“Vote Saku for All-Star… or little Timmy gets it!!!”

  217. showey47 says:

    woohooo, ak46

  218. Keith says:

What a bullit shot that was! WOOOOOHOOOOO!!!!!

  219. The Teacher says:

    wHAT a stupid icing!

  220. Chuck says:

Time to add another brick to the Cristo-Wall!

“Vote Saku for All-Star… or little Timmy gets it!!!”

  221. MikeL says:

WOW, finally Andrei shows Montreal fans his beautiful shot

  222. The Teacher says:

    Let’s go buy one!

    100$ LMAO

  223. Bill says:

Fans are booing the icing, and can’t blame them. Komi had lots of time.

  224. sadave says:

    Don’t fall back! Pressure them. No back-handed knife-ins . . . Effort!

  225. showey47 says:

here we go again, icing the puck to protect a lead against possibly the best line in hockey. I’m going to grab a rye and ginger, anyone else want one while i’m up?

  226. linp says:

I have a feel we start to play defensive again

  227. The Teacher says:

It was dumb…definitely. Montreal fans know their hockey.

  228. Chuck says:

I’ll have one… hold the ginger.

“Vote Saku for All-Star… or little Timmy gets it!!!”

  229. The Teacher says:

Kost46’s goal was 5-on-5 also. nice to see.

  230. Bill says:

It’s funny, the only way you can tell the Habs are playing defense is that the other team has a million scoring chances all of a sudden. I don’t think the word ‘defense’ means what the Habs think it means.

  231. showey47 says:

how about i just pass the bottle in the paper bag to you? With the way this team plays i’m surprised we are not all alcoholics

  232. linp says:

Tampa’s goalie is weak on the grove hand.

  233. The Teacher says:

Hahaha, you can tell when there’s no one in the opposing zone when Tampa has the puck.

  234. The Teacher says:

  235. sidhu says:

What a pass! Chipper deserved a goal tonight, he’s been on point.

  236. CHiggins says:

Chipper was due for a goal…what a player

  237. Chuck says:

For the Habs, defence seems to mean “anti-offence”.

“Vote Saku for All-Star… or little Timmy gets it!!!”

  238. Habs-Kat says:

    WOOOOH! CHIPPPY!! <3<3

  239. showey47 says:

good work by sk74 and finish by the chipper

  240. Bill says:

    Pleks-Chips-Sergei another genius Carbo special!

  241. Moey says:

He’s even worse on the glove hand :)

  242. Shawn S says:

What a piecework line that was of chips, pleks and sergei k. But I’ll take it! Chips!

  243. Chuck says:

    Speak for yourself! (burp)

“Vote Saku for All-Star… or little Timmy gets it!!!”

  244. sadave says:

Lots o’ time left. Keep up the pressure! Great job!

  245. linp says:

Plekanec sees the ice so well.

  246. sidhu says:

    haha well done Moey

  247. Keith says:

YYYYEEEESSSSS!!! That gives us a little breathing room. PPPLLLLEEEEAAAASSSSEEE don’t blow it Habs.

  248. CHiggins says:

    such a good, hard-working player

  249. Chuck says:

Free wings! I’m booking my flight to Montreal right now!

“Vote Saku for All-Star… or little Timmy gets it!!!”

  250. Moey says:

Yeah, hope we win tonight, Carbo will keep his job until the next loss

  251. Bill says:

Ha, don’t mind looking stupid on this one!

  252. Chuck says:

    Chipper first star?

“Vote Saku for All-Star… or little Timmy gets it!!!”

  253. The Teacher says:

    Haha Il lance…et manngeee!

    can we make it 6?

  254. Naila Jinnah says:

Book me a flight to Hamilton!

  255. Naila Jinnah says:

    I vote yes.

  256. sadave says:

Stick the fork in! Killer instinct, boys! Finish them.

  257. CHiggins says:

    Between Chipper and Ryder

  258. CHiggins says:

    already finished πŸ˜‰

  259. Shawn S says:

The wings are better here in steeltown!

  260. sidhu says:

Hey Mr Boone, when are we having a ‘Girls of Habs I/O’ steel cage or jello wrestling match? Winner gets to have dinner with Chipper.

  261. The Teacher says:

That’s a crappy-a$$ call, Kovy even lifted his hand up..sheesh Dave Jackson SUCKS!

  262. showey47 says:

another penalty 200 feet from our own net

  263. Chuck says:

    That was weak.

“Vote Saku for All-Star… or little Timmy gets it!!!”

  264. The Teacher says:

    LMAO, or higgins.

  265. The Teacher says:

Guess you never heard of Nashville, Tennessee

  266. Ed says:

Did Ryder play too well on that PP in the first period? I don’t think he has been on the PP since.

  267. Bill says:

Just trying to keep it interesting … and succeeding, needless to say.

  268. Habs-Kat says:

  269. showey47 says:

    can i be the ref?

  270. Naila Jinnah says:

Dinner with Freddy? Hmmm… that might be a tough one. He’d have to leave Carey at home, after all, and I’m not sure he can deal with that!

  271. Habs-Kat says:

Bad penalty, Kovy – but if we win, all is forgiven.
Six minutes is lots of time for Vinnie and Co., so lets hope for a strong finish (something the Habs have lacked all season).

  272. The Teacher says:

Koivu needs to keep to hands on his stick..COME ON!

  273. The Teacher says:

Just a reminder to all. The Habs play a EARLY game Saturday, 12:30 or 1 PM

  274. Ed says:

Thanks, I would not get to see it if it was in the night.

  275. Chuck says:

    Sit down, doofus!!!

“Vote Saku for All-Star… or little Timmy gets it!!!”

  276. The Teacher says:

AGHAHAHAHA! i was thinking that too. once ok..not every time!

  277. The Teacher says:

Chipchura’s number 28 fits so well on him, don’t you think?

  278. The Teacher says:

  279. Habs-Kat says:

    IL A BUT!!!

  280. Naila Jinnah says:

Et le buuuuuuuuuuuutttttttttttttttt!!!! That sealed the deal!

  281. sidhu says:

Ryder’s back! Big night for Higgy.

  282. CHiggins says:

    RYDERRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!! wow..he’s back

this one is in the books

  283. linp says:

    Higgins is looking for ryder

  284. showey47 says:

woohoo, can ryder finally be back?

  285. Steiner says:

    HES BACK!!!

  286. Bill says:

Higgins really wanted that one for Ryder. Could’ve shot five times.

  287. Mattee. says:

    HAHAHA what is this business?

  288. Keith says:

Poor Vinnie looked so dejected after Ryder’s second goal lol πŸ˜‰

  289. Chuck says:

“Vote Saku for All-Star… or little Timmy gets it!!!”

  290. Shawn S says:

Guess whose back? Back Again! Ryders Back! Tell a friend..

Guess whose back guess whose back guess whose back guess whose back……

  291. Ed says:

    Merci, Chris Higgins.

    Signed, Michael Ryder

  292. showey47 says:

laffs getting spanked again, what a great night

  293. The Teacher says:

Guess we know who the first star is now!

  294. Bill says:

    Three Stars:

  295. Bill H says:

I’m so glad it happened on home ice for Ryder. He deserves a break for a change.

  296. The Teacher says:

I hope Tampa pulls the goalie so Ryder can get 3!

  297. showey47 says:

i still say price should start on saturday

  298. Mattee. says:

I really wanna see the 3 stars tonight. I want to hear the crowd hail Ryder king.

  299. The Teacher says:

  300. Infanteer says:

    Where’s TradeRyder tonight?

  301. Chuck says:

If that guy jumping up was in front of me, I’d punch him in the head.

“Vote Saku for All-Star… or little Timmy gets it!!!”

  302. The Teacher says:

    can it.

If he plays, he plays, if he doesn’t, he doesn’t.

  303. sadave says:

Big cheers for Ryder all night — right from the opening face-off.

    Way to hustle, lads! Effort.

  304. Ed says:

Yes, after all the booing he has been subjected to at the Bell Centre this year.

  305. The Teacher says:

and by many on this site as well.

  306. drecha says:

    I’ll hold him for you!

  307. Infanteer says:

Pit 5 – 2 over the Leafs, with 5 mins left.

  308. Ed says:

Traded to the laffs, I hope.

  309. showey47 says:

it was 5-1 , oh its now 6-2

  310. linp says:

    Huet is not tired today

  311. The Teacher says:

    Applauds, applauds. GREAT game boys.

  312. Moey says:

    Trading in his handle:)

  313. drecha says:

The laffs allowed 3 goals in 48 seconds!!

  314. The Teacher says:

    where, oh where? wehereeee?

  315. sidhu says:

Tampa Bay broadcast player of the game – Ryder

  316. Bill says:

BIG win at HOME! Convincing! Yay Habs! My stars: Higgins, Kovalev, Ryder.

  317. Moey says:

    Even better!!!

  318. sadave says:

Earlier, someone posted “win the third.” That’s the way to answer a 1-3 second!

  319. The Teacher says:

Plqaying against the backup goalie very night they still suck, yeah theyre out in my mind.

  320. Chuck says:

Now THAT’s the kind of third period I want to see from here on out!

“Vote Saku for All-Star… or little Timmy gets it!!!”

  321. Infanteer says:

    3rd star Ryder???

  322. linp says:

I think it turned out to be good for our team that we gave up the lead in the 2nd period. It forced our team to play 60 minutes hockey.

  323. CHiggins says:

who chose the stars tonight? and where was chipper!?!?
    this is wrong

  324. Moey says:

Was that the Habs I was watching? Coming back with 3 goals? There is hope folks.

  325. The Teacher says:

We didn’t technically come back..we were never down.

  326. The Teacher says:

  327. sidhu says:

Ovechkin comes into town on Saturday, should be another good game, the Caps have been playing very well since Boudreau took over.

  328. Keith says:

I would have given Ryder the first star, he did get 3 points after all.

  329. Infanteer says:

Ryder had 2 g and an assist. Kovalev had a goal. Who chose the stars tonight, Helen Keller?

  330. Bill says:

Kovalev was awesome tonight, though, every shift.

  331. Yeats says:

Get some rest gang. You’re gonna get lit up like a Roman candle tomorrow afternoon by my younger countrymen.

  332. The Teacher says:

    Saturday you mean, Yeats?

  333. showey47 says:

taking the day off work to watch the game tomorrow, should be a good one

  334. Keith says:

    Wanna bet?

    My fearless prediction…

    Canada 4

    USA 3

    In overtime

    4 in a row!

  335. ebk says:

a pint a guiness to the winner, what you say buddy

  336. Yeats says:

All we need are a few gunships to set the tone!

  337. 24 Cups says:

It was far from perfect but I’ll take it! There were a few bumps along the way that we can discuss tomorrow but we did what had to be done and Ryder got two goals which means so much more than just helping his team win tonight. Carbo – all logic dictates that you start Price on Saturday. Give Huet a rest and let the kid feel like he’s part of the team again.

    The Original 24 Cups

  338. Keith says:

What could be better than the Habs winning 6-3 and the laffs losing 6-2 I ask you?

  339. Naila Jinnah says:

My stars were Ryder/ Chipper/ Kovy. But RDS disagreed. Lecavalier got an honourable mention.

  340. The Teacher says:

Eerily similar to the last time we won big!

undefeated at home in 2008, nice one Mike.

  341. Naila Jinnah says:

    Earning a playoff berth.

  342. The Teacher says:

Why would he not feel a part of the team? That comment made no sense to me.

  343. Guy21 says:

Huet looks bad on breakaways and shoot outs. It’s like he gives up before they even shoot.Good hustle by everyone glad to see Chips back in the lineup and Kovalev is awesome again…….Vinnie can stay in Tampa Bay -who cares!

  344. whitecat says:

comme les gars de RDS dit “a la prochiane” what an awesome frigging gaame Go Habs Go!!!!!

  345. NLhabsfan says:

Nice to see Ryder have a good game and the “MAX” line works well.Looked bad there for a while in the 2nd.Great to finish them off in the 3rd.

  346. Keith says:

Right you are Naila, but I wasn’t looking that far ahead. How about the Habs getting in and the laff missing for the third time in a row.

  347. Chuck says:

Laffs lose to ANOTHER backup goalie, too. Ty Conklin has only played 6 games all year.

“Vote Saku for All-Star… or little Timmy gets it!!!”

  348. G-Man says:

Bank those 2 points as Plekanec, Hamrlik and Huet will not file this one under treasured memories. However, watching Tortarella overplay his stars as the lead got away from them was priceless. Give Tampa a healthy Boyle and they will be better, but not enough to crawl out of last place this season. GM Feaster, and coach Tortarella are definitely goners, perhaps in a couple weeks.

  349. CHiggins says:

    Tampa hands down

  350. Ed says:

Ryder only played 12:46, & 1:13 on the PP. He never got on the PP after Kovalev’s goal in the 1st. He looked good on the PP, & it makes no sense to me why he never got on it afterwards. He had 3 shots, 2 hits, 1 take away, & 1 blocked shot.

  351. Chuck says:

Tough call, but the team’s playing well in front of him right now. My guess is that Huet starts on Saturday. Just make sure that he gets to bed early the night before!

“Vote Saku for All-Star… or little Timmy gets it!!!”

  352. showey47 says:

    i chose C) toronto

  353. The Teacher says:

That’s what I say, but some people on this site seem to think he plays the same number of minutes as last year…Get real eh!

  354. gumper says:

Habs now third in the conference in scoring. Fifth in the league!!

  355. Bill H says:

    Higgins 2G 1A
    Kovalev 1G
    Ryder 2G 1A
    A. Kostitsyn 1G
    Streit 2A
    Chipchura 1G
    Plekanec 1A
    Koivu 1A
    Komisarek 1A
    Markov 1A

A lot to cheer about tonight. First, a win at home. 3 point night for Higgins. Ryder breaks his slump with 2 goals and 3 points. 4 even strength and 2 power play goals. Habs are wobbly through the second period as they blow a 2 goal lead twice. But then they rally in the third with 3 unanswered goals. Way to go guys.

  356. jimbo82 says:

great game…finally a home win….hey boone who is mike higgins??

  357. The Teacher says:

    I think boone is drunk.

  358. Yeats says:

Just caught Benier on NHL Net and he was ripping on the decision to start Mason. Man, I don’t want him near our room. (Yes, it was bad even in translation!)

  359. 24 Cups says:

I just meant he hasn’t played in awhile – didn’t mean to infer that he was on the outside looking in. We have about forty games left to play and I feel Price has got to start at least a dozen of them.

    The Original 24 Cups

  360. Chuck says:

I’d rip on him, too; Mason has looked pretty weak. I expect him to be starting against the Laffs soon.

“Vote Saku for All-Star… or little Timmy gets it!!!”

  361. Yeats says:

    Three Stars:

    1. MTL R 27 A.KOVALEV
    3. MTL R 73 M.RYDER

    Kovy 1 pt; A, Kasts 1pt; Ryder 3pts?
    Am I missing something?

  362. Yeats says:

That first one against Finland was a real howler!!!

  363. showey47 says:

what better way to get your confidence back as a goalie then to play against the laffs

  364. Mattee. says:

In the New Year, the 3rd star counts for more. I mean, why would you want 1 star when you can have 3? (Think of stars as beer, this may help)

  365. The Teacher says:

He probably will, but don’t mess with a winning team, is what I was always told.

when is our next set of back to back games? do we have any left?

  366. Jay_in_PA says:

You know, he’s that player from Long Island. The one who plays on the line with Ryder, Lapierre, and Markov.

  367. Yeats says:

My bad, pass me the opener!

  368. Yeats says:

Good catch, I missed that he had three points as well.

  369. Yeats says:

Shoot, if consumption counts for anything, I deserved the Molson Cup in December!

  370. Mattee. says:

You can have all the Molson in a Cup in January as well my friend.

  371. Mattee. says:

    except not… haha.

  372. 24 Cups says:

Agreed – you shouldn’t tinker with a winning hand, I just don’t want our prized rookie getting rusty. We don’t have any back to back games until the middle of February 12&13) and (16&17). We do play 3 games in 5 nights the next two weeks so Price could start in those middle games (both on the road – Boston and Atlanta).

    The Original 24 Cups

  373. Chuck says:

Interesting stat: the laffs have now played 41 games, and have faced 19 backup goaltenders.

“Vote Saku for All-Star… or little Timmy gets it!!!”

  374. mjames says:

A good win. Lets see the same effort against Washington.

These youngsters have really brought some energy to the team. I hope Carbo keeps the same line-up and the same lines. By having Koivu with Tenders and SK 74, he has three scoring lines. Koivu brings experince to that line as opposed to say Lapierre. Nothing against Lapierre but I think he is better suited to Higgins and Ryder.

I hope Carbo does not start playing around with the chemistry that seems to be developing.

  375. The Teacher says:

I call em how I see em.

  376. The Teacher says:

Sure, that is probably the plan. I have no problem with Huet playing 3/5’s as opposed to 2/5’s for Price.

  377. The Teacher says:

Suck HARD! surprised it’s only 19, seems like a heck of a lot more.

  378. sidhu says:

What do you mean, you’ve never heard of Mike Higgins before?

  379. Mattee. says:

Hey Chuck, how many have we faced? I’m thinking less than 8?

  380. Zaskar says:

Very good night for 3 reasons:

    1. Habs win at home
    2. Leafs lose at home
    3. WATCH THE REPLAYS – Darcy Tucker got his butt kicked! And don’t tell Don Cherry but I think it was a European who whupped’em

  381. Zaskar says:

Check that…Leafs lost in Pittsburgh. Can’t keep track of home vs away jerseys anymore.

  382. howtathor says:

It was a lot closer than the score suggests. The second period meltdown was reminiscent of the Hab’s home woes.
Nevertheless, the “new” Canadiens charged back in the third, and put the game on ice. Nice to see my boy Ryder racking up the points. His goal from thirty feet out was breathtaking! a laser! Yeah, a typical Ryder goal from the last three years. Next up Alexander the Great. I notice he’s doing a signing in the West Island on Sunday. I didn’t know that opposing players did that??? Must have something to do with Reebok. Maybe Gainey can sneak a contract in there. Hope we will see Carey Price on the weekend. I kind of miss the kid and he deserves to have some playing time. If it weren’t for him (and Cristobal) we would not have the second best point total in the Eastern Conference. We’re not talking Abby here, we’re talking a really solid “tandem”. That being said, hope to see him between the pipes on Saturday.

Tommorow, PK Subban against Max Pacioretty!

I like going to the games but I miss reading this blog as the game goes along. Maybe they can make the Bell Center Wi Fi friendly if it already isn’t so I can bring the laptop.

  383. Naila Jinnah says:

Very true, but while he sucked defensively, he worked his butt off and was the most dangerous Lightning player out there (in my opinion).

  384. petemoss says:

can you guys believe we are second in the league with goals for??????

  385. likehoy says:

i was thinking the same thing bout OV…slip in a kid with an official contract πŸ˜› and it’s binding hahaha…that’d be quite the scandal

  386. Mike Boone says:

    And what about Vaclav Prospal?
    The star system is imperfect.

  387. linp says:

Yes. Kovy was the best player on the ice. K1’s goal is the turning point of the game. The game could go both way in the 3rd period until that winning goal.

  388. ebk says:

Mr. Boone, with all due respect, how did you get they blew a two goal lead twice?

Did the score not go, 2-0,2-1,3-1,3-2,3-3

Would that not be blowing a two goal lead only once?

    Or did I miss something?
not trying to nitpick, just not sure what you mean

    Have a good night

  389. Chuck says:

    It’s still almost 50%!

  390. likehoy says:

thank goodness ryder broke out of his slump…now we can actually use him as trade bait like we’ve all previously planned.

  391. The Teacher says:

seems like Mr. Boone wasn’t the only one tipping a few back tonight.

  392. The Teacher says:

    and …yup…

    reported again…

    “3P 2:28: My bbuddy MMike

    Over ”

who is the mike higgins we speak of

  394. Habsfan39 says:

oh sorry, i see we’ve already come to the conclution that boone was drunk

    Ignore my comment above

  395. Higgins21 says:

Be careful about dissing Mike. He doesn’t like it.

  396. ebk says:

he seems like a decent fella and I can’t see how I’m dissing him, just asking a simple question is all because I don’t understand what he meant.

  397. The Teacher says:

    yup, he was.

  398. Infanteer says:

Only the single point, and several very ill-advised penalties. He played well, but not first star material.

  399. The Teacher says:

several? the last call was BS.

  400. Bill says:

Well, I was watching a different game then. I noticed him every single shift he was on, and he played a just about perfect game, from my point of view.

  401. 24 Cups says:

We would have our star forward (that we’re searching for) if he was six years younger and displayed the same attitude on a consistent basis, year after year. But hey, we’ll take what we’re given.

  405. The Teacher says:

Ahh ok. thanks for the clear-up.

  406. Erik says:

  407. Moey says:

Listen teach, we’ve been up 3 and blown it, we don’t usually do well with a 1 goal lead, not great with ties, so yes we did come back.

  408. The Teacher says:

Hahahahah! we were up 2 today, not three. And yes we don’t usually. But we did today! so let’s celebrate!

  409. The Teacher says:

Ahh, when we win, there’s no greater feeling, when we lose there’s no worse feeling. When the Habs win and the Laughs lose, it’s the BEST feeling!

  410. Yeats says:

With Mason in net, I’m feeling kinda frisky. Beers are on me if you win.

  411. The Teacher says:

Ahh, so they decided on Mason? Hmm, I would go with Bernier.

  412. Chuck says:

Can we send Price down for a game? :)

  413. Yeats says:

In for a penny, in for several pints! Good luck tomorrow!

  414. Keith says:

Same to you. I’m worried because you guy’s have one Hell of a team this year and your favored to win it all.

  415. 24 Cups says:

Taking the day off? You just had your Christmas holidays!!!! Don’t forget the other game at 10:30.
