That’s why they’re the champs

Tough to beat them with 18 shots.

The Canadiens wasted a dominant first period.

You are right effort and action is all that matters, no matter if it is wrong or misguided, at least they were trying. That being said, wouldn’t you agree that his lack of effort is easily fixable? Given the current situation and options available (Darche and Maxwell are not good options), couldn’t any coach worth his salt extract just a little more effort out of him?

blown out of proportions, sergei had the point-man covered to a T.

was one pass made to that pointman? no.

who do wingers cover in d-zone coverage? the point.

i think he’s blamed for backstrom coming off the bench, but it’s not his duty to pick him up.

that was a play from a player with no confidence playing in a shell.

if you want to know who blew coverage? look at where mike cammalleri is standing the whole time….STANDING. not moving, and that allows backstrom to come in with speed to create the first chance that went off the boards that led to the goal.

it was a mis-coverage because cammy is the winger, he should be up with carlson, while metro is the centreman who should be in the thick of it all, and metro was off the point, which let carlson take the shot, where metro tried desperately to block. that alone caused the goal because cammy doesn’t play centre and metro doesn’t play wing.

the only fault for sergei was off the rebound when he should have peeled off the pointman to cover ovechkin streaking in as the whole team was collapsing, but goal scorers know when to attack the net and shake coverage, and ovechkin did just that. also the knuble pinch in was an issue, but sergei couldn’t have seen knuble come in and it can also be attributed to fatigue (as seriousfan09 said).

Now I just get ready to fast forward on my PVR to skip the commercials.

PVR’s are great. It’s nice to pee relaxed, when you’re good and ready, not holding it in or skipping the flush to save time…

  8. Ian Cobb says:

I have to admit that the way Jacques Martin
coached this year has been very troubling for me at times and I have
complained on here about him not being the coach that could take us to
the next level. I don’t understand his pairings or his utilisation of
his bench. But then again, I am not a coach, and I certainly don’t know
    what is in his mind.

But results matter and I have watched him
as he has tinkered with the line up from game to game. He has made
moves that have turned a game or two in our favour, using or not using
    players in different situations.

    He must be doing something
right, winning Stanley cup playoff games don’t just happen. Yes!, I am
looking at our coach in a different light these days.

    For the
life of me I don’t know how he thinks he is going all the way with only
9 forwards. But you know, just maybe that’s all the forwards that he
has with the ability to play his style of game in the NHL playoffs.

Yes I have been wrong many times before, and I was very wrong with my initial assessment of our coach.

    We
sure don’t have all the pieces that he needs in place yet, but he is
doing a great job with what he has to work with this year.

  9. Will Longlade says:

Maybe Pleks will not be affordable, making Cogs an economical replacement offering some decent upside. The trade I suggested would not be out of the realm of possibility IMHO. Both of the K bros. could be star players on another team and Price could potentially be a franchise goalie.

  10. Chris says:

“Why does this team not have any offensive forwards who can man the point?”

They actually do…goes by the name of Sergei Kostitsyn.  He was very, very effective as the setup point-man for the London Knights in the OHL.  Excellent passer, good vision, defensively responsible…he was the real deal for the Knights.

The problem with using Sergei on the PP in Montreal over his short career has been that they’ve been trying to use him as the shooter with Markov, a role for which he isn’t really that well suited as his shot is more sneaky than booming.  Pairing Sergei with Subban on the points might be worth a shot, if Jacques Martin could stomach the idea of seeing Sergei on his line-up sheet.  :)

  11. Mark C says:

You are really going to get on Sergei for passing/shooting the puck between his legs during what was likely pre or post practice?

Should he be sacrificing chickens in the locker room to show he cares? How is he to prove to the coach’s his d-zone coverage is better during practice, by protecting the water bottles?

Darche’s TOI in his 4 playoff games:

    10:21, 7:46, 2:21, :54.

So basically, P.K. Subban played more in Game 2 against Pittsburgh than Darche has across 4 games.

Darche is benched because JM knows that Dan Blysma is salivating over the idea of getting Crosby out there against players he so completely outclasses them it might as well be the Canadiens playing the Montreal Juniors. He is not an NHL Player, he was an injury fill-in that wouldn’t be on the roster of any of the other active NHL teams left in the playoffs and his being on the roster has more to do with JM being required to name 18 skaters to play in each of his games than anything else, if Markov wasn’t injured, he’d be scratched so MAB could be a 7th Defencemen. If Spacek was uninjured, same thing.

And my god, did you honestly reference a singular picture of Sergei from practice yesterday as evidence of why he’s not in the lineup? Wow I’ve seen some delusional posts around here but that’s a new one.

  18. 24 Cups says:

Markov’s long term injury might just end the notion that we will buy out Hamrlik this summer to free up cap space.

I wonder what Spacek’s status is in terms of returning to the line-up?  Will he move to the left side now that Subban is here?  Do we still dress MAB and go with 3 1/2 lines?  What about the PP and a presence from the point?  Why does this team not have any offensive forwards who can man the point?

Martin sure does have a lot on his plate.

  19. CBrady12 says:

first thing he should have done is ATTEMPT to squeeze off that DMAN who steps up and keeps the puck in our zone…but he just watches him skate by…Somehow the other forwards are moving around and TRYING to get possession. The point Im making about this play isnt the mistakes its the lack of effort. You can dump on Hammer and Metro all you want but at least they are making an effort, there is no excuse for sergei not trying

  20. jbroderi says:

Jeez, you must have hated Kovie.  For God’s sake, you can put me on the ice and I would give effort, but it doesn’t mean i should play.  that is the case between darche and Sergie.  Sergie will bring it if he gets a chance, but when you are in the doghouse, everyone gets more tentative.

But lets be honest!! Darche or Sergie K is not winning the series for us.  Lets move on to bigger topics.

of potential there… And if they blow it, we just go back to 3 lines.

    http://www.youtube.com/user/ahengnbo

  23. CBrady12 says:

well first of all lets be fair, the only reason that line was benched was because of Sergei big brother missed coverage AGAIN and led to the Cooke goal, I don’t think 1 minute of ice time can accurately gauge if he is really befuddled by the level of play. BUT I will say one thing if JM is still keeping him out of the lineup even though Darche isn’t as good, its for a reason. There are so many things that go on that we dont see. For example, look at the pic on HIO where sergei is passing or shooting between his legs. I mean for a guy that never plays maybe he should be focusing on working his ASS off and proving to the coach that A) he wants to play more than anything and B) he wont make the same mistakes agains. For fringe players, the coaches like to look at how the practice and I would bet a lot that Sergei doesn’t practice that hard and sure as hell isnt trying his best to force the coaches to play him.

  24. Mark C says:

I understand that play looks really bad, but his positional responsibility is for above the face-off circles on his side.  He had a few opportunities to jump in to the play, but there was always another Hab in position, albeit a step late in coverage. Metro and Hammer also look bad on this play.

What should he have done? Rotated down in front of the goal to outnumber the Capitals players, while leaving the points uncovered? Maybe. While he did not cover himself in glory during this series of play, the whole 5 man unit is to blame for the breakdown and not just one player.

  30. SeriousFan09 says:

Doesn’t mean he’s always right and doesn’t embellish either, not everyone is always right and well-respected doesn’t always mean they can’t be wrong. For example, Boone thinks the world of Pierre Mcguire, I still think he’s a self-important jackass who has a ridiculous man-crush on every NHL player under 25 or over 6’4″ and has proven wrong multiple times.

JM doesn’t use Sergei because he doesn’t like him, believe it or not, coaches will enact vendettas against players they don’t get along with, such as oh… Mario Tremblay leaving Patrick Roy to get shelled in that ’95 game with Detroit. Michael Ryder was a regular press box guy because he and Carbonneau clashed, a 30-goal scorer in the press box.

Neither will give anything on the 4th line besides taking up space on the bench because JM knows Darche can’t do anything but he has to put someone on his full roster list to give the NHL before a game. I think Sergei’s NHL-calibre skills give him the opportunity to do more in a game that Darche’s AHL skills will, yes.

you’re right!  maybe sergie won’t be a difference maker, but at least there is some potential that if he got a break away or a two on one that he could cash in. Both K brothers are very streaky, and although they are both cold as ice now, if either one got a goal somehow, they would turn into different players.  If you are going to use someone less than 5 minutes, it maight as well be a potential game breaker!

If you are going to argue that JM is incompetent because he wont use sergei than why are you arguing in JM favor about his usage of Darche.

It boils down to this, they would both play on the 4th line….he has to decide who is going to give him more on the 4th line and obviously he has chosen Darche. Having a fourth line with Metro, AK and SK as a backup is just smart, especially as the fourth line has averaged less than two minutes a game anyway.  If the line is clicking it is all gravy if not you will not miss Darche and Maxwell.  It is a win win situation.

Sather’s signings in NY have done wonders for overinflating defencemen value, Chara, okay he’s got a Norris but a year older than Markov and he’s getting 7.5 a year on his current contract.

I want something worked out, but I also acknowledge that unfortunately, the incompetence of the NHL has made it harder for teams to negotiate good deals with pending UFAs.

well if you look at the trend of NHL contracts, they’re all long term deals that take them to 40, and the years from 35 to 40 decrease in value.

if we put markov down for a 5 year term, he would be 37 at the end of the contract, and if we chose to re-sign him, his money will be on the books even if he retires or gets sent down (see: Jaroslav Spacek).

as a GM, pierre gauthier does not want to put himself in the same situation we are in with spacek, with markov. he’s gotta be creative and lock markov up long term, and at the same time, lower his cap hit.

similar deals are hossa’s and savard’s. savard goes for 7-7-6.5-5-1.5-.525-.525 (cap hit of 4.2). he’s currently 32 and would be making 36 when he’s making 1.5m.

savard is a top 5 playmaker in the league, and markov is a top 10 dman in the league, so it’s comparable, the contract i suggested (with alterations of course) suggst that markov gets paid like a top D for the first 4 years, and then tail off for the last 4, which is identical to savard’s deal.

I remember some yellow journalism by the French press last year that tried to link the brothers to organized crime during a bad NHL season so they had to sensationalize some stories that turned into a whole lot of nothing because they were looking to sell more newspapers during a bad part of the season and sold their journalistic integrity along with it. Also, believe it or not, sometimes reporters EMBELLISH stories to get more viewers on their program, like when Tony Marinaro reported a heated remark from Markov to Price earlier in the year, a type of remark that is probably passed between different teammates 10,000 times a year.

Darche has how much TOI in the NHL playoffs btw? That should tell you how comfortable JM feels about throwing that guy out there on the ice, he’s played a little over 3 minutes in his last two games combined. He doesn’t have an NHL-calibre skill set and the regular season is the regular season, his GPG % ignored, when has he looked like he wasn’t completely, utterly outclassed in the Playoffs? He’s not a regular forward on any proper NHL team, he was an injury fill-in and that’s all he ever was. Matt D’Agostini in 08-09 has a better GPG than Darche does as well, should we trade to get him back?

What makes the NHL playoffs so compelling are the storylines.

Knowing they don’t have enough raw firepower to shoot it out with the better teams, the Habs committed to a rope-a-dope strategy that forces opponents to take a lot of shots from the outside.

Washington refused to adjust, simply assuming their superior talent would prevail. In this round, the Pens have the advantage of hindsight. They know that must adapt or risk suffering the same fate as Washington. It will be interesting to see what they do to counter Montreal’s approach.

I’m not crazy about Martin but I like the nothing-to-lose approach. The Habs know you only have to play a little better than .500 to win a series … and Stanley Cup. Pittsburgh is going to win games; Montreal can’t keep Malkin and Crosby bottled up all the time, can they?

Admirable in its execution, the Habs’ system is a fragile one to some extent. It requires a lights-out goalie who doesn’t give up rebounds. And an opportunistic offense that can take advantage of limited scoring opportunities. To take this series to the limit, Montreal needs scoring from someone other than Cammalleri, Pleks, and Gionta. Pouliot and Dead Man Skating have to contribute. I suspect that it the series turns Pittsburgh’s way, Martin will loosen the reins on Subban and make him a bigger part of the offense.

More props to Gainey. He brought in hard-working players who have won championships and a veteran coach who’s able to work from his team’s strengths.

And the Habs REALLY don’t need Cogliano…the critics would have a field day blasting Gauthier for adding yet another small player to the stable.

  75. CBrady12 says:

    Maybe but neither does Sergei

  76. andrewberkshire says:

Are these refs kidding? Gill gets a penalty for CHECKING Crosby after Cammalleri gets tripped in the Pens zone. Horse S***!!!!!

  77. RudeMood19 says:

what a horrible call. Sid held Gill’s stick earlier

  78. Keith says:

That is bogus! This league is corrupt!

  79. T-roy West says:

Why didn’t Gill just check Crosby behind the net?

  80. hablifting says:

FFS seriously?  Gill held him on 2-3 seperate times that shift.  Were they all legal?

Being a Habs fan is one thing, but making shit up is something else all together.

  81. wd40 says:

i can’t believe how often Crosby looks at the Refs…

  82. SeriousFan09 says:

    Wow, crybaby gets his call.

Where were the refs when he snapped his stick on our net or cross checked Cammalleri?

  84. avatar_58 says:

Awwwwww Cindy doesn’t like to fight?

  85. crabvader says:

    OMG

If Crosby was Lapierre on that play, that would’ve been called a dive 100%.

  86. topher5468 says:

    Crosby flopping like a fish.

“It’s not an obsession, It’s a way of life..”

  87. T-roy West says:

    Crosby nice diving. Idiot.

  88. kempie says:

    Smurf power!!!

  89. Keith says:

I’m losing alot of respect for Cindy tonight! IT’S WAR NOW!!!

  90. wd40 says:

if Lapierre can get 2 for Diving (twice!).. why can’t Sid get to for Whining?

  91. Kristopher7 says:

CRY MOAR CROSBY! Good job at the end scrum boys, show the Pens they can GTFO!

  94. Shiloh says:

Man – we’re barely hanging on. Hopefully somebody will break out and give us a lead.

  95. Larry says:

Where do people get off holding that little puke Crosby up as a role model. I have never seen a poorer sport, a bigger whining sense of entitlement in hockey history.

  96. Y says:

Some things just need to stay in the bedroom

  97. crabvader says:

Have you already forgotten of Ovechkin?

    There’s your poorer sport.

  98. topher5468 says:

There is a lot going on out there, Crosby’s a whiny bitch, the only one embelishing everything. Refs should keep letting them play. Much worse than that not called

“It’s not an obsession, It’s a way of life..”

  99. Larry says:

I disagree. Ovie is emotional, he went all out to win, but he took it like a man. I didn’t see his lips flapping after every whistle and he made no excuses when they lost.

  100. SeriousFan09 says:

Ovechkin aside from the snow shower, wasn’t a complete A-hole on the ice for 2 straight games.

Bruce Boudreau however, is the biggest whiney bitch in sports.

  102. crabvader says:

    Lmao 100% agreed.

  103. T-roy West says:

The difference between Subban and some of our other defencemen is that he doesn’t give the puck up easily and clear the zone for nothing.

  104. PrimeTime says:

Different rules for the little kid

  105. crabvader says:

    What a bullshit call.

    ONLY because it’s Crosby.

  106. gohabzzzz says:

what the hell was that??????????????????? :O :O :O

    “WHAT A SUBBANORAMA!”

  107. JIMVINNY says:

What a BS call.  Apparently you can’t even hit Crosby anymore.

  108. doug says:

Had we scored first we would have won. My continued congratulations to Martin who has been a masterful coach. Gill also a guy I was dead 100% wrong about- what a player. I can’t believe the nightly sustained team defense. Tonight in the first period I actually believed we could go to the Finals. It hurts because had we won tonight I believe crowd would have willed us to 3-1 series lead. But this series is far from over: no Markov and yet they are simply no better than us. I applaud this team, and apologize for my lack of full belief at any point this season prior to tonight. Good thing they believe in themselves.

Oh, and my doubting on the weak willed Kostitsyns? There’s a lot more to a hockey player than skills. Martin doesn’t like ‘em and I finally see why. Man is Andrei frustrating, and MA Godin said today team annoyed by early exit of moody pouter SK today in practice.

  109. spoonfullofjelly says:

Forget about the last paragraph. Good on you man, good on you.

  110. gumper says:

And, of course, the only reason he hasn’t played in this series is because JM has somehow developed an inexplicable dislike for a player who plays intelligently, supports his teammates and leaves it all on the ice every game.

  111. spoonfullofjelly says:

It goes both ways bud, what about Subban high sticking Cooke with blood, and no 4 minute call?

Don’t blame the refs. We didn’t score. They did.

  112. Danno says:

And Gill and Gorges to please the Bettman and whiny Cindy.

“Hey Richard, two minutes for looking so good!”

  113. The Nut says:

Blown call by the refs in pittsburgh zone we cough up the puck, Pens go down get a PP and score on it. Game over! Also I would like to know why that offside near the end of the game came right down outside our blue line!!?? Didn’t deserve to win didn’t deserve to lose.

  114. Harani says:

    Woman but thanx.

    “I gotta feeling…that tonight’s gonna be a good night!”

  115. SeriousFan09 says:

Well I’m personally of the opinion that Cooke have suspended for the season on the Savard hit so when he gets hit, I just think he wouldn’t have been hit if he’d has his sorry, cheap shot, diving, whining ass watching the playoffs on TV like he should be.

  116. Habscore says:

I give a lot of credit to Fleury, and some of the Dmen that contained us, but we do know that the Pens have not played one of their best games tonight. This is what I meant. It was really tight, and clearly the Habs couldn’t even pass the puck to each other in the third. But that’s it, I wouldn’t give them so much credit.
Our boys dominated the first 30 mins, and the Pens the second 30 mins.

    — YES HABS CAN!! –

  117. TripleX says:

Anyone else think that PK is being wasted playing with the third line mostly?  Those beautiful outlet passes should be going to Gomez not Moore.

Another obvious change that has me wondering what JM is thinking.

ps  Pouliot is sooooooo soft on the puck…it really irritates me

“Good judgement comes from experience, and experience comes from bad judgement.”

  118. HFX-HabFan says:

Except for Darche, dude only got like two shifts.  It’s harder to change on the fly when you’re trying roll four lines with eleven guys.  It seemed like often our opportunities to sustain some pressure were passed up because someone was always going off.

  119. spoonfullofjelly says:

That’s irrelevant to the situation. You have turned this debate pointless. It was fun while it lasted.

  120. Danno says:

They were the champs. They have to get by us to get that title this year. Don’t count your chickens before they hatch…

“Hey Richard, two minutes for looking so good!”

  121. AH says:

“Wasted a dominant first period”; truer words were never spoken Boone, and all that fan energy behind them too, unreal.

  122. alfieturcotte says:

Penguins showed that they can play a tight checking game, and well.  Hope this loss does not diffuse the Habs for game 5.  They need Spacek back because MAB on defense results in overuse of top 4 d-men.  Time also for SK 74 to find his way back in line-up in place of Metropolit.

  123. SeriousFan09 says:

I just really hate Cooke. For the record, so what if they missed one penalty by PK? They missed a half-dozen dives and a few other infractions by the Pens. The officiating clearly favoured one side tonight and I’m not saying our guys were perfect, but the Penguins did their best to cheat the officials, and won on that.

    - I shall always remember Captain Koivu.

  124. shootdapuck says:

Anyone reckon that Pittsburgh purposely started that scrum at the end of the 2nd with the sole purpose of getting Gorges off the ice at the same time as Gill?

    Sure looked like it!

“The three stars as selected by Red Fisher of the Montreal Star:
    1st star: Henri Richard

  125. showey47 says:

Actually in place of darche would be a better idea.

  126. habs_1993 says:

NHL says Darche was in the lineup, but played 0 minutes….is that true…. i didnt see him on the bench…..but it would make sense since without him its only 11 forwards

  129. HFX-HabFan says:

Sorry dude, best we can do is pick 22nd.  Maybe take a flyer on Kabanov?

  130. SeriousFan09 says:

Same place as the Blue Jackets, Wild, Panthers, Islanders, Thrashers, Blues organizations are, watching the Playoffs on TV.

  135. showey47 says:

I’d rather have the 30th pick.

  136. punkster says:

We need one of those lists someone on HI/O always finds that shows all the super star 30th picks.

  137. HardHabits says:

And a lack of a sense of humour is for idiots.

  138. Big Ted says:

Also wondering why that was an intentional offisde call, especially since we didn’t even touch the puck. They blew it dead while Pittsburgh had it. Our guys argued but the officials had already decided to screw us over.

  139. HardHabits says:

Then bow to me idiot, since I am your king.

  140. showey47 says:

Truth be told, the pens success wasn’t from tanking,it was more from winning the 2005 draft ball lottery pick which landed them crosby. If the pens would have gotten the 2nd pick instead of the first they would not have  won the cup and could possibly be playing out of another city. The ducks got the 2nd pick that year. Could you imagine if the ducks had gotten that first pick instead? Getzlaf and crosby down the middle with corey perry on the wing?

  141. SeriousFan09 says:

Crosby lottery was huge (and suspect), but Malkin, Fleury, Staal gave them a giant boost as well.

  142. HardHabits says:

No backtracking. I called you an idiot. You called me the king of idiots. Therefore I am your king. Logic. You should try it sometimes. It’s right up there with thinking. On second thought. Nevermind.

  143. showey47 says:

True, but they are not a stanley cup team or even a legit contender without it.

  144. HardHabits says:

    Look everybody, Habs_Guru is back.

  145. showey47 says:

I’d gladly waste a 30th pick on the next “mr.hockey” from minnesota if it meant skating around with the cup in mid june.

  146. HardHabits says:

Crosby is not the only reason. Don’t forget Malkin got the MVP for the playoffs. No Malkin no Cup either.

  147. HardHabits says:

Dude. You just don’t know how stupid you’re sounding, but keep it coming. Now bow to your king idiot.

  148. HardHabits says:

You know of course that I am being sarcastic. I’d take 30th pick anyday, as long as we don’t trade for it. ;-)

  149. habs4cup says:

  151. Peter Young says:

Our goaltender and our defence did their jobs, but you have to say our forwards did not because, although they had some fair chances, they did not capitalize on them and because they simply did not get enough shots on goal.  Plus the Penguins got some outstanding work from their goaltender.  Yet we showed we can play with the Penguins, who now know for certain that they have to work hard to advance from this series.  To the Canadiens, I would paraphrase what manager Alf Ramsey said to England’s team just before extra-time in the World Cup final of 1966 against Germany:  You’ve beaten them once already, now go out and do it again.

  152. badbalance says:

I like how on NHl it says Fleury outduels Halak as Pens blank Habs,  it should be more like “Halak makes more saves than Fleury, Refs award Pens a shutout.”

  153. punkster says:

You’ve been outed again HG. Strike two.

  154. longtimehabsfan says:

I’m sorry but that call on Hall Gill was lobbied for by Crosby.  Total crap.  Hate to lose on a BS call.  Still, the Habs didn’t play with the same intensity they had in the first period.  Hard to lose this game.

  155. habaholic68NJ says:

Looks like we ran out of gas after the first period.  Pittsburgh played our game.

  156. Bob_Sacamano says:

Great champs, they scored a pp goal when we were without Markov, Spacek, Gill and Gorges. Very impressive…

  157. habsperspective says:

  166. kempie says:

Ya can’t tell me this isn’t funny. Comeon.

  167. Will Longlade says:

NIce game. Crappy outcome. Fleury was excellent. He made some tough saves. Thought it was funny that both Malkin & Crosby escaped the wrath of the refs after the second period scrum. Funny how that works. Couple questional penalties zapped the momentum from the Habs IMHO.

Anyone else think Laps may have scored on that shot in the 1st?

  168. HardHabits says:

    Hilarious really.

  169. TripleX says:

Heroic effort by the top forwards, but you can only go to the well so many times.  Lady luck and fatigue did the Habs in.  Does JM not understand you can’t win a series with two and a half lines?

“Good judgement comes from experience, and experience comes from bad judgement.”

  170. Les Habitants says:

Crosby is a whiney little bi**h, imagine if he had to put up with all the crap the Rocket had to deal with back in the day, he’d probably go back to the dressing room and throw a tantrum and have a big cry for himself. Oh yeah before I forget: DEATH TO COOKE!

The last time the leafs won the cup it was still just a bowl!!

  171. SeriousFan09 says:

We won WSH that way, but the problem is you can’t win multiple series that way, the fatigue is catching up very badly right now. SK back in so we can roll 4 bloody lines at once! What a revelation! I don’t care if they don’t like each other, we just need Sergei, Metro and even AK to just take 6-7 minutes off the Top 2 line’s workload, and SK to suck up some SH time from Gomez, Gio and Pleks.

Cup teams don’t go with passengers.

    - I shall always remember Captain Koivu.
    http://habsandhockey.blogspot.com/

  172. gumper says:

I thought the four lines were cycled well for most of the game. When you don’t have terrific depth, you don’t have much choice but to shorten the bench late in the game when you fall behind. Most teams do it.

  173. spoonfullofjelly says:

Common, get your head screwed on right and give credit where it’s deserved.

  174. gumper says:

“Cup teams don’t go with passengers.”

    Somebody should tell Sergei that.

  175. habsfaninboston says:

Great 1st period but we stopped skating in the 2nd. Only a couple of quality shots in the 3rd. Most were long or from impossible angles and with no traffic in front.

I’m curious to know what the stats on faceoffs was. I could only count a handful that we won.

  176. spoonfullofjelly says:

Sorry, whethered the early strom , took control of the game, scored a goal, held the lead, closed out the game. I can’t describe what Pittburgh did or road hockey any better.

  177. kempie says:

Don’t get me wrong, I’d take him on this team in a heartbeat and I’d draft him first overall…..

    But what a bitch!

  178. spoonfullofjelly says:

Scarier then that was how he was flying after that. I want him back to no confidence.

  179. tony d says:

I’d hardly call the Pens champs after tonight’s effort. Our boys handed them the victory. Never a good sign when we play a solid 1st period but don’t cash in on  our chances.

  180. TripleX says:

HAHAHA….dude has not played a single second in this series and you still find a way to somehow blame SK.  Brutal!

“Good judgement comes from experience, and experience comes from bad judgement.”

  181. habs_1993 says:

isn’t this how it always is?….. Play dominant 1st period, then slack off 2nd and 3rd? jrrz, u think they learn by now

Halak was sharp, goal?…meh, but it was malkin so w.e

OVerall, we need to get better at playing 60 minutes…not 20

  182. habs-hampton says:

I agree, neither guy should have been available for the PP. You gotta wonder how they pick 2 guys out of that mess. Crosby should have got a dive and slash there as well.

  183. Harani says:

No comment on the game coz I didn’t watch it. I volunteer at a foster kids home once a month and these kids anxiously wait for me every week to come do activities with them. I’m going to be honest that I had a good night with them and the smiles on their faces was enough to keep me happy tonight. And honestly, I wasn’t going to give up that valuable time just to watch the game.

But what I came to write here is that be it on the radio or on TV, I’m sick of hearing people say OMG Pittsburgh is playing without Jordan Staal and Bill Guerin and what an accomplishment. Please stop with the bull, we’re playing without Markov and Spacek. They have Crosby AND Malkin. Get serious! I’ll go watch the game and then post my comments later.

    “I gotta feeling…that tonight’s gonna be a good night!”

  184. SeriousFan09 says:

For Penguins playing going down like they were stabbed every time they were touched and not getting called for diving? Okay, that was fine acting on their part. For Crosby crying to the referees until he got a call while they ignored him crosschecking Cammalleri after the whistle?

I’ll give them credit when they earn it.

    - I shall always remember Captain Koivu.

  185. habs-hampton says:

It’s an easy save without Crosby in front.

And Malkin was invisible for large parts of the game.

    Sergei, grow up dammit.

  187. joeybarrie says:

Worst thing is what can we get for a shadow hockey player and a basket case baby with euro-mullets?

There may be other teams, but only ONE Club De Hockey…

  188. habs-hampton says:

I’m more impressed with Price than unimpressed with Sergei.

Price could sulk too, he has plenty to be upset about, but here he is working his butt off, knowing full well, the only game time he’ll get is to mop up a bad one for Halak.

Good for you, Carey. You are a true professional.

    As for you, Sergei, bye-bye…

  189. K-hab25 says:

I’m sure you thought Markov was being a leader when he allegedly called out Price though right. Again pot meet kettle.

  190. Go Habs Go Theme Song Guy says:

I agree. He is not looking sharp. Remember that lob he bobbled?

I don’t know why the lob isn’t more of a set play. When the ice is

bad, you never know exactly how the puck is going to bounce. at

the very least, it handcuffs the goalie for a split second.

So, yeah, just hit the net…

Seriously, what the heck is wrong with this kid? So much talent wasted on so much attitude. A real shame.

  194. SeriousFan09 says:

    Disappointing isn’t it?

Oh well, can’t win it all, considering we drafted Sergei in the 7th round from drafting terms it was a no-risk pickup. Maybe he’ll turn it around once he gets booted to another team, maybe not.

    - I shall always remember Captain Koivu.
    http://habsandhockey.blogspot.com/

  195. punkster says:

Wow Andrew, I just don’t agree with either supposition. Price will have to go a long way to prove his maturity and this single, unconfirmed incident doesn’t quite herald maturity yet. Need some additional concrete examples. As for SK, you touch briefly on what he should be doing (using it as motivation) but treated like garbage? Come on. The guy makes over $560K a year (or something close) and could stand to prove his worth at some point, not act like a spoiled brat. That’s  a half million worth of garbage your talking there.

  196. punkster says:

Operative word being “kid”. Maturity doesn’t appear like magic at 18. Some take time to develop.

  197. Go Habs Go Theme Song Guy says:

  198. andrewberkshire says:

Anyone else find it ridiculous that Boston is getting all this hype while playing inferior teams? The two best teams in the East are playing against each other tonight, no question whatsoever.

  199. Tobiass says:

I agree, but its one thing to be immature, another to have such a horrible attitude.

  200. andrewberkshire says:

Is Punkster defending a Kostitsyn? I think my brain just melted and oozed out my ears!

  201. CBrady12 says:

Hmm now why am i not surprised about Sergei…

  202. showey47 says:

My issue with the whole thing is that it seems every time sergei makes a mistake he is subsequently benched or put in the press box. I also find it odd that he is only 1 of 2 forwards who isn’t a minus player, the other being moen but is labelled as lazy or doesn’t care. Maybe this is the source of his frustration,he makes less mistakes but seems to pay for it when he does while others don’t. I mean, darche is a -4 in 5 minutes of icetime but is playing tonight. Perhaps JM is still carrying a grudge from training camp?

  203. avatar_58 says:

No see what pisses me off is knowing if the habs won this series somehow they’d find some way to lose to the Bruins or Flyers…..despite having just knocked off the two best teams in the east. I wish I could understand WHY this occurs with the habs. Lose to Toronto, yet eliminate Washington. ARG

  204. SeriousFan09 says:

We’re 5-1-0 with the Ruins this year and the Flyers will leave that team a bloody mess even if they win in the series, if we beat the Penguins we can take the Bruins on. I am confident in that.

Gotta disagree with you there. I don’t think there’s a chance in hell of losing to Boston or Phili if we beat the Penguins. This team has too much character to go down to an inferior opponent. If we beat the Pens, we’re in the Cup finals.

Markov is a leader by way of his long tenure and the way he has carried himself on and off the ice.  He called out Price because he felt someone had to set him straight after his display in the St. Louis loss.

Price has not earned a leadership role on this team, if anything SK is his contemporary not his junior.  It is not his place to call out anyone.

  213. andrewberkshire says:

Ok, Dave, forgive me for being a tad rude, but your entire premise here is complete BS. Every player in this league is paid a minimum of 500K a year, so what a player makes has nothing to do with it. What I’m talking about, is that in training camp, after major surgery and out of shape, Sergei Kostitsyn outplayed Latendresse, Pacioretty, Lapierre and a host of others. Despite this he was sent to the minors, at a time where cuts were supposed to be over. This was a deliberate attempt to embarrass a proud player.

After this Sergei was finally called up after Boucher gave him glowing reviews in Hamilton for his play. In Montreal he instantly became one of the better defensive players on the team, getting onto the 1st PK unit with Gomez while Gionta was injured a couple games after his call up. Down the stretch he was one of the most offensively productive players from February to the end of March, and also one of the best defensive players. Despite all this, he gets punished disproportionally for mistakes compared to other players. Gionta was directly at fault on FOUR goals in Game 1 against Pittsburgh, but he didn’t get benched, because that would be stupid. Benching a player for a single mistake, is not a productive way to deal with an NHL asset. Martin has mismanaged Sergei from the day he was hired.

Just have to offer my two cents on Sergei. This guy is poison. His team’s having a helluva playoff run, and he’s moping around the rink, bringing the rest of the team down. This guy is the definition of selfish. Does he have no idea that everything he’s doing is decreasing his chances of ever playing in this league. I think Gauthier should “Georges Laracque” him.

  221. punkster says:

And let me hurl back your BS statement. Why? First, you’re ignoring the reason for SK’s demotion. He acted immature and not following the coaches orders. Second, a single media report of Boucher’s SK comment does not stand as glowing reviews. He served his sentence, didn’t cause any grief and was sent back up. Third, Martin didn’t mismanage him. SK has been doing that quite well all by himself.

  222. punkster says:

Oh sure. Gang up on poor old punkster. Go ahead. ;)

  225. usversusthem says:

Pyatt has 2 goals in 49 career NHL games, regular season and playoffs. Providing he doesn’t score tonight—and I’m not holding my breath—that’s a 1-every-25-games pace. Even if Andrei was as bad as 1/20 he’d still be better than that. I’m not saying I dislike the guy; Mike’s right about his hustle and his determination. But gawd I wish he had Andrei’s hands instead of his own.

  226. andrewberkshire says:

He missed a bus, and a good players coach would have addressed that with Sergei personally instead of calling him out in the media and sending him down to the minors without warning.

As for Boucher, he was quoted several times as saying Sergei was no problem in Hamilton. He was used in all situations and played well for him.

The question is, would Sergei have been such a distraction this year if Martin had taken him aside and told him that he needed to be more committed from the start, and played him in Montreal instead of playing the even more disinterested Latendresse?

  227. showey47 says:

The fuzzy logic here is self-fulfilling. If Price can not be given credit for taking on a leadership role (however briefly), then he will never acquire any at all, let alone enough credit to be considered a leader in the future. This is the problem with priveleging the source instead of the act.

The backup goalie counts on the scratches to stick around to provide him with shooters. Price is immature for calling a player to account when he shirks responsibility in a manner that is both detrimental to team morale, and could impact Price’s readiness should he be called upon?

    Get real.

A hat trick in a losing cause. Unmemorable and insignificant. AK is done on this team. Hopefully the Habs can get a bag of pucks and few hockey sticks for him. Worst waste of a #10 pick especially given the talent available that year. I’d love to eat my words and see him score a significant goal but I’ll leave that up to Cammalleri or Gionta who will work for it whereas AK is defensive liability every time he steps foot on the ice.

I certainly hope SK is doing none of those things.  I wouldn’t even say he is a negative distraction.  He just has to find his game, but he never will if he’s a scratch.  I really think that after this season, pick one and trade the other.  Maybe they need to be aprt in order to mature and add positively to the team dynamic!

  257. Adam says:

Price had two ways to react to this season: he could have said “Screw it, other teams will want me in the off season, this season is a write off,” or he could have gone in a positive direction, looking at this as a chance to prove he’s a team guy, work on his game in practice, put in the extra time, and wait for his oppurtunity. I like Carey Price. I like Jaroslav Halak. I think both have gotten better this season (Price’s stats are decent, other than his W-L record, and an improvement over last season). I hope we can hang on to both, because I think both are going to be superstar goalies. It would be a real shame to lose either just as they’re about to enter their prime.

As for Sergei… I’m not in the room, I don’t know what the dynamic is, and I don’t know what JM’s beef is with him. I thought he played some good games this year. If he’s back next year, you just have to hope he matures his game, shows up to play, practices hard, and finally proves he belongs as a top 6 forward. I can’t take this article as anything more than a snapshot of a 2 minute period in the dressing room. Maybe he was in a bad mood because he had a stomach ache or something trivial. Maybe he’s just a dick. We just don’t know.

Andrew you’re making assumptions, not stating a fact. First, show me any evidence that JM or any of the coaching staff did not take SK aside. Second, there’s a big difference between glowing reports and saying Sergei was no problem. To answer your final question, no SK has not shown that anything would make him more committed yet. Maybe next season when he grows up a bit.

And to finish off with a zinger…maybe SK is farther along on the maturity scale than another player who fires a puck at opposing team celebrations and slashes opposing players at the bench?

Feed off the crowd and burn the Penguins on home ice, they have not tasted defeat on away ice yet, it’s time to shock them. Old man Guerin being out is nice, but the real key is to beat up on Fleury, he’s been average in the playoffs and their D is not what it was last year. Habs are trapping the Penguins and they HATE it. NJ trapped them for a season sweep this year, it really frustrates them and stymies their playing style.

No I don’t agree. It’s easy to blame the coach when you don’t understand why a player is benched. There’s no logical reason why SK isn’t dressed so therefore it must be the coaches fault. There are reasons he’s not playing but pettiness is not among them. I say that with as much conviction and inside information as you have.

You have a point there. SK could have easily put in the same amount of time on the bench. Because that’s exactly where he’d stay.

  311. JIMVINNY says:

  313. Danno says:

Anyone notice the play where Subban got hurt?

“Hey Richard, two minutes for looking so good!”

  314. HFX-HabFan says:

Why is there a random guy in a Cessna claiming that Subban is injured?

  317. Larry says:

We seem to need to score early. All season long when we have a good first period, lots of chances but fail to cash one, a shutout is inevitable. We have to break that. Get a goal here.

  327. dhenry1234 says:

    Habs HAVE to score here

  328. JIMVINNY says:

wow.  if they hadn’t have called that, they would have had to leave the building in an armored car.

  329. Danno says:

Okay. Time for us to score a garbage goal. A nice greasy one.

“Hey Richard, two minutes for looking so good!”

  330. Shiloh says:

Idiotic decrepit Boob Cole – “the crowd called the penalty.” He loathes the Habs.

  331. SeriousFan09 says:

You know what’s really ticked me off about MAB tonight? He hasn’t been terrible but he has been off-target on a half dozen simple passes to OB in our zone with absolutely no pressure on him.

Tell me about it. Cindy starts crying and the whistle starts blowing. Amazing.

  336. davecessna says:

    RDS claimed it as well.

  337. 24 Cups says:

It’s only a small point, but I noticed something interesting about the “timing” of Sunday’s game.

Near the end of the third period, a long shift was concluded by a Montreal icing. All of the Hab players were gassed, especially after having killed off some penalties. A minute later, a two minute television commercial break stopped the game. I remember thinking that the timing was absolutely perfect for our exhausted players. It seemed to go on forever.

That led to a few questions. Are these television timeouts planned in advance? Is the team privy to when they will occur? If so, shouldn’t a coach keep that in mind and include it as part of his game plan? Especially a coach that dresses the full line-up of players but only uses a short bench throughout much of the game?

Here are a couple of good articles from the Toronto Star concerning tonight’s game.

  338. Mark C says:

Steve, TV timeouts take place after the first stoppage (cannot be an icing) in play after the 14, 10, and 6 minute marks.

  339. SeriousFan09 says:

    Oh man the hate…

Molsons have owned this team for months, chill out already.

  340. oshawahabsfan says:

Fleury must have done some foul things to his goal posts, as they ended up being the difference. Those two go in in the first period, Montreal wins. Those saves on Subban, Pleks and Cammalleri sure helped as well. I’m not one to harp on the officials but that call which let to the winning goal was totally bogus and only called because of bitchsby yapping to the ref because Hal Gill is bigger than him. Like a child that gets knocked over in the sandbox. Talbot held Gorges I believe it was, much worse than that play and of course it’s not called.

Really liked the play of Lapierre. Took him the whole bloody season to figure it out, but he’s playing like he should be now. Being an all around shat disturber, and playing quality minutes and even generating scoring chances. He seems to have a pretty hard shot, needs to utilize it more when he’s got the opportunity. Better game by AK, needs to bring it every game, good to see him dishing out some hits again tonight, needs to bring that every game as well. They’ll win next game, wouldn’t want to make it too easy on us now would they

  341. Exit716 says:

I miss Bruce Boudreau’s coaching tactics, or lack of the same.

  342. habs001 says:

good effort and dont forget we really have many 7-8 goal a season players on the forward lines so this type of game will happen as you cannot expect the same players to score every night…

  343. longtimehabsfan says:

Tonight I hate the Molsons.  For turning this team into crap and having us fans hope that crap can give us a miracle.  It shouldn’t be this way.  This franchise should never be in the last seed looking for miracles.  And that is what we are rooting for.  The Molsons are shit and they will continue to be shit until they want to win.  And I’m sorry but for all those fans who fill the building each night you are the problem.  Don’t go until they give us a product that is worth filling the building.

  344. TripleX says:

JM is brilliant.  How else to explain his plan to play with 11 forwards for the second consecutive game.  Is Darche the secret weapon only to be used in case of overtime?  Brilliant JM.

  347. habaholic68NJ says:

Our defense and goaltending were excellent.  Their’s were as good.  We did not get the bounces.  They capitalized on the PP with our two best penalty killers in he box.

But I really think we lost this game because our offense ran out of gas.  Reason?  Ever since the last three games of the Caps series, we have played with three lines.  It has caught up with us.  JM has to get 10 min out of a forth line combo that will stay in the game.  This way, our top three lines can be fresher throughout the game.  Metro saw 5 min tonight.  AK a few more shifts on other lines.  Darche never saw the ice. Maybe the Tits bros with Metro?

  348. Exit716 says:

How can you blame the Molsons?
It was the other owner that built the foundation.

  349. habs001 says:

i think we will keep the next two games close but lack of scoring is catching up…we were around 23rd in scoring this year..too many gritty forwards that score one goal every 15 games

  350. SeriousFan09 says:

Not even 10 minutes, just giving the top lines an extra 7 minutes would give them something for the 3rd period. SK playing on the 4th could relieve Gio, Gomez or Pleks of some of those long PK shifts.

  351. habaholic68NJ says:

After leading 3-1 in the game, Wings loose to SJ in OT and are down 3-0 in the series.  Looks like SJ will not choke in round 2 either.

  352. Shublips says:

Habs margin for error is razor thin and if your goalie let’s in one goal and you lose the game, it’s because you have some offensive problems.

For the Habs to be successful they HAVE TO capitalize on the few scoring chances that they get.  If they can’t, like last night, they lose.

They need to get more bodies to the net and pick up on secondary scoring chances.  They had almsot none last night and need to have people picking up the rebounds.

I’m still not impressed by the Pens. They are VERY beatable!  Go Habs Go!

  354. Will Longlade says:

The Habs know they can play with these guys more than ever. They will come back with more resolve in Game 2. Need a couple of players to step it up though.

Excellent game for PK. Bold decision to call him up for the end of the Caps series. Hope all the experts that slammed that move realize the error of their ways.

I’m really going out on a limb by saying Habs in six.

  355. BienvenueSurLaPasserelle says:

How the hell did Malkin not get a penalty along with Gionta in that scrum? They were practically fighting. That would have been an acceptable trade-off with the Pens having that PP at the beginning of the 3rd. But of course, he’s the one who scores. However, let’s not take anything away from Marc-Andre F. Fleury tonight, he played well.

The great *conspiracy* deepens! The mental midget Bettman in the building to watch his Golden Boy cash cow along with the head officiating supervisor, in a game officated by Watson and Pollock. Ugh.

  360. Danno says:

Probably the best-played game by the Habs that ended in a loss. Pittsburgh was lucky to escape the first period without being behind 2 or 3-0. Fleury was good and lucky. I think this is going to be a long tough series. We can win it.

  364. crabvader says:

Pleks, Benny, and in the 3rd, AK46 also…

These guys need to wake up.

AK46 played better this game but gave up the puck so many damned times and had horrible body position in the 3rd.

The passes were crap, the puck control even worse.

We reverted to our seasonal selves by shooting from impossible angles and not getting any traffic in front of the net.

  365. gumper says:

Me too. We’ll stick it to em thursday.

Crosby’s bullshit penalty on Gill is the difference, and not to mention to start of the third period where Georges, and Gill in the box, already without Markov, and Spacek.  Leaving us Subban, Hammer, OB, and MAB to defend.

Pittsburgh sucks BIG TIME, they have 2 even strenght goals in 3 games.

  384. zozotheclown says:

Better team won, we played a great first but sat back after that, like we usually do, but this time didn’t have the lead. Need better and more shots, Fleury had 3 tough saves to make today, all ended up being with the pad, I don’t recall him having to move his arms on any saves, and thats how we’ve scored in the past on him, up high. The 2 posts suck, because those were well aimed shots, just an inch off, but other then those most shots were pretty easy to stop. I think its fair to say most any NHL goalie good down low would have shut us out today, we made it too easy for him. Another game of the year Thursday, win or face 3-1 again and see if we can push our luck.

  385. topher5468 says:

  386. TheMock780 says:

The Penguins constant whining to the officials throughout the game was embarrasing. Same with Cooke, Crosby, Letang constantly diving and throwing their heads back like they’ve been shot like Carcillo. Unfortunately the Habs in the 2nd and 3rd weren’t much better and Gomez/Pleks had off games and when your centre’s don’t play their best it’s hard to win. Hopefully Martin can make the right adjustments again for the 4th game because not team has ever come back from 3-1 two series in a row.

  387. SeriousFan09 says:

  395. Exit716 says:

Gill did it twice that shift prior to being called.

He was pressing his luck or out of gas from the extended shift.

Actually, the officiating has been pretty good tonight. My friend, who is a Red Wings fan was livid with this duo the other night in San Jose, but so far I think they’ve let the teams play for the most part.

  412. Danno says:

No. You have to add the ian. It’s a Galllivanism:

The ultimate Gallivanism was a word he coined: the “spinarama,” which
described a player evading a check or when a player would deke a
defender with a sudden 180- or 360-degree turn. Its chief practitioner
was Serge Savard, so the move was also known as “The Savardian
    Spinarama”.

  432. danp says:

I really never knew how much Crosby whines. Versus makes it a point to not say anything and the camera moves away. However, when a Montreal player goes down the claims of a dive are mentioned right off.

After being asked who Subban’s skating reminded him of.

  438. Iceberg84 says:

You can’t really compare the two. Cooke DOES have a lengthy history of injuring other players. Subban has only played a handful of games in the NHL. Plus, Cooke was the one who called him suspicious and made the allegation, probably in an attempt to justify the Markov injury.

On another note, if Markov’s injury is career-threatening, then I think it’s time to upgrade the F. to a full blown F**K!

  439. Batalla says:

Don’t get me wrong, I love PK.  But percentage-wise, your argument actually hurts you.  3 playoff games and 2 “incidents” is a much higher percentage than whatever Cooke has (which I hope is herpes).

    http://habsbros.blogspot.com/

  440. Iceberg84 says:

Don’t you think that’s spurious logic? That’s like saying if a guy gets a shutout in his first NHL game, he’s going to get shutouts every game for the rest of his career.

  441. Batalla says:

The stats technically support that conclusion, however unlikely, yes?  ;)

  442. Josh says:

Good to see the refs allow Crosby to get away with murder on the ice.

  443. jbroderi says:

I guess no suspension for Adams.  What a joke!!  he missed like 2 and a hlaf minutes, but they will say that the one game was enough.  what a joke.  It should be 2 to 3 games!!  if the MAB was injured, it would have been.  Basing suspensions on injuries and not intent is a poor road to go down.  Intent and action should be the main issue

I think the one point we can take from this year, is that we are not condemned for years to come with the players we have.  No matter what happens, we have solid building blocks and option to move forward.

    • Hammer is goos, but if we can unload him, there’s 5.5 million.
    • We can geet a nice return on a goalie, possibly the kostytsins as well.  a big, young forward would be good.
    • we will have subban next year, and a big stay at home stud would be a good addition.
    • the obvious then is pleks or a replacement for him.  I prefer him at a good price, but if too high, we have to have a plan b
    • maybe a huge offer sheet to backstrom??? hahaha..  serioulsy though

  486. 24 Cups says:

Don – In fairness to Gainey, I think that’s what he had in mind when he signed Mara as a top six Dman.  Markov’s injury in game one and Spacek’s inability to play on the PP eventually led to the arrival of Bergeron.  That meant we weren’t able to carry a defenseman who could use his size.  Then Mara got hurt and it was game over.

There is no one in Hamilton who can fit the bill so we will certainly being looking for another physical Dman this summer, be it by trade or free agency.

  487. 24 Cups says:

Thanks, Mark.  You would think that it’s safe to assume that Martin would then utilize part of this info into his strategy for alloting time to his players.  Three TV timeouts basically equals three “phantom” shifts by a 4th line.  It works for both teams but we need it the most seeing we have little depth on our roster.

  488. Mark C says:

A month ago I might have said no, there is no way Martin understands this. However, I am sure these “planned timeouts” play a role in shift strategy.  It allows for almost limitless options, comeback with the hot line, give the faceoff to the 3rd line in an effort to give even more rest to the top 6.

Looking around at the minutes of other teams and it seems every team is rolling only three lines, in last night’s games Philly and Boston had four forwards each with less than 10 minutes of ice time, and Chi and Vancouver had three towards with less than 10 minutes.

I agree with the general point that the team needs more minutes from the 4th line. I would like to see the Kostitsyn brothers with Metro, I understand the brothers are currently whipping boys; however this line has some offensive upside. The bros. have a history of playing well together, and with last change tonight, this line could be used as a real match-up weapon against the likes of Adams, Rupp, Fedotenko and players of that ilk. And if it doesn’t work, oh well Maxwell, Darche and A. Kostitsyn got something like three minutes between them in the last game. This is the perfect opportunity to try getting the brothers together and get Andrei back into the game. If the Habs run is to continue it sure would help to have his scoring.

  489. 24 Cups says:

Great post with an interesting, plausible roster suggestion.  However, I wonder if Martin is a bit like Mike Boone – stubborn as hell!

  490. Mark C says:

Hopefully, Martin isn’t locked in to a prisoner’s dilemma in that trap loving mind of his. His management of the 4th line in game 2 limits any downside using a Metro and Bros. 4th line tonight. Montreal does not have the personal to employ a checking/gridding style 4th line, then the best option is to maximize the offensive ability of the 4th line in hopes of creating a match-up advantage over Pitt’s bottom two lines. And frankly, this is a last ditch effort to get the brothers going. I do not think it is unreasonable that they can be “coached up” by someone like Muller today, then give the team 10 good minutes tonight. If after a few shifts it isn’t working then bench the line.

  491. 100HABS says:

All coaches know it and they all use it. You rarely see someone take a timeout at 14:05, or 6:05. It is totally regulated and has been for years. It existed long before the icing rule – they used to use the TV timeouts to get a break as they knew exactly when it was going to happen. That is why they brought in that icing rule.

Can they really be asking this question? The article is titled “Markov or Stall, Who’s Missed More” Gee I wonder, over rated third line centre, or one of the best defenceman in the world, that’s a doozy of a question.

  503. TripleX says:

Stall is not considered over rated by any knowledgeable fan.  He is a third line centre because the two ahead of him are Malkin and Crosby, two of the best players in the world.

Stall would be a first line centre on the Habs and most other teams in the league.

Markov is a very good player.  One of the best in the world?  I think Hab fans tend to over rate their players.

He has size and speed, but he doesn’t a true playmaker’s vision nor the finish of a top goal scorer.

  563. joeybarrie says:

Well, this season i have heard 3-4 hockey analysts mention Markov, had he not been injured, as a top 3 Norris Candidate. Last year many said the same thing, that he should have been a candidate, including M. Schneider and S.I.’s M. Farber.

In 2007 he was named the best defensman in the IIHF World Championship. A top defencemen with the Russina Senior team for 6 years straight.

AND he has been mentioned as the MOST undervalued player in the NHL by many.

Lastly, he has made more than a few top rated defensemen lists in the last 3-4 years. And NHL all star in 2008 and 2009.

I’m gonna go with ONE OF THE BEST IN THE WORLD.

There may be other teams, but only ONE Club De Hockey…

  564. TripleX says:

    Canada’s Olympic 2010 defensemen:

    Dan Boyle, San Jose Sharks
    Scott Niedermayer, Anaheim Ducks
    Chris Pronger, Philadelphia Flyers
    Drew Doughty, Los Angeles Kings
    Duncan Keith, Chicago Blackhawks
    Brent Seabrook, Chicago Blackhawks
    Shea Weber, Nashville Predators

Would Markov have made the team?  Possibly over Weber.  Just saying Markov would not be a shoo in for Team Canada.

“Good judgement comes from experience, and experience comes from bad judgement.”

  565. K-hab25 says:

I would take Markov over any of them except Doughty and Keith and that’s because of age. Grandpa’s Boyle and Niedermeyer, really, I mean seriously. Do you still live in 2006 or something. Pronger is overrated overpayed version of Gill, he’s like a “dirty Gill”. Weber and Seabrook aren’t even in the conversation, same as Green, they will be, but not yet.

  566. SeriousFan09 says:

He would’ve made it in over Seabrook, whose career really got a huge boost by playing next to Duncan Keith, much like Souray and Komiasrek got huge boosts to their careers by playing with Markov.

So again my apologies for the cofusion, I hope you can see why. :-)

  568. Big Ted says:

I would have taken him over a lot of those guys, except Keith, Doughty, and Weber. Neidermayer didn’t look that great, Pronger looked awful even on the smaller ice. Fact is he didn’t bring it and couldn’t keep up with the speed of the game against skilled players. He actaully reminded me of how Brian McCabe looks playing in the NHL since they took out the clutching and grabbing. Seabrook is a decent player but not as good as Markov and Boyle is a toss-up.

  569. joeybarrie says:

And the Russian team was supposed to be as strong as Canada’s and he is a TOP defenseman there. They picked him to play 62 games so far, and Tretiak called him one of the 3 most important players on the team.

I think we can safely say that Markov would be on Canada’a Olympic team, if he was Canadian.

There may be other teams, but only ONE Club De Hockey…

  600. ajpursell says:

I’m nervous about the amount of shots. I think Fleury may have learned Halak’s secret.

  601. Keith says:

Great, great period, lots of energy, electric atmosphere in the building. Should have scored two at least.

  602. ajpursell says:

I’m nervous about the amount of shots. I think Fleury may have learned Halak’s secret.

  603. Larry says:

That was one of our best periods of the year. I think the Pens are stunned. They thought this was going to be a cake walk

  604. andrewberkshire says:

That may have been the best period this team played all year!

  605. kempie says:

You’ll never hear this from CBC but the pens are lucky this isn’t 3-0.

  606. topher5468 says:

I know Crosby’s a great player, but he is the biggest bitch. Does he ever stop whining. Great first Period, Laps playing like a man possesed. Great job all around

  607. joeybarrie says:

Lots of cheap shots from the Pens. We gotta stay disciplined and keep them frustrated. Great first period. We have to score a few though. We are close, but it only counts when it goes in. VERY HAPPY with this period. GO HABS GO

  608. jwxcskier says:
PK’s great but how did he last until the 2nd round?  That’s an easy one, the only sure thing about the draft is there are no sure things.
Look at 2003.  The list of players selected AFTER Andrei Kostitsyn include Jeff Carter, Brent Seabrook, Zach Parise, Ryan Getzlaf, Corey Perry, Mike Richards, Ryan Kesler, Dustin Brown. A crime.
Sorry if someone already covered this.

  620. andrewberkshire says:

Darche didn’t take a shift…. And AK was excellent!

  621. punkster says:

He was good for sure. Love to see him get a couple of points tonight.

  622. showey47 says:

That’s what blows my mind, what’s the point of dressing him? At least dress SK,the guy can at least kill penalties. What happens if any of cammy, gio,ak or benny gets injured during the game? Who can we move up to play a top 6 to 9 role? Darche? No chance

  623. andrewberkshire says:

I think him playing with Tom Pyatt is a good decision, they look good together.

  648. gumper says:

Boys are givin’ ‘er all they got. Remember, they were 8th seeded, and got to the second round the hard way. Given that both the first and second rounds should have been total mismatches, we have to feel good about what the team looks like now that it has finally gelled. No denying, there’s still work to do so that this team can consistently run with the big dogs.

  649. avatar_58 says:

Remember Markov and Spacek both out too

  650. kempie says:

So, Don Sherrie has never heard of a skate cutting through a skate boot and severing a tendon? Never ever?

All these years I heard about Sid and his whining and a diver, and I

know what, I cannot respect this player, seeing him like that, Mario
should show him some Yzerman and Sakic tapes to show how a real man
plays….He is CRAZY talented, and is amazing talent, i will never take
that away from him, but wow, just wow….

  652. K-hab25 says:

Anyone else scared that this game has been alot like game 3 against WAS. We dominated the first period in that game aswell, then got whooped in the 2nd and 3rd periods.

  653. topher5468 says:

    No

“It’s not an obsession, It’s a way of life..”

  654. solsub says:

Yeah, I’ve noticed that too. Let’s hope this isn’t a rerun.

  655. andrewberkshire says:

Not at all, this team is completely different.

  656. JIMVINNY says:

Familiar scene;  Dominate the first period, but can’t score.  Then proceed to suck for the rest of the game.  Flurry near the end, but too little, too late.  Rinse, repeat.

  657. SeriousFan09 says:

Detroit demanded they get the **** referees away from their series and they did, they sent them to us instead, why they don’t send those pricks to call a series that doesn’t matter like Flyers-Bruins?

  658. Kristopher7 says:

It’s a shame Markov the MVP is out, but we have PK “Baby Markov” Subban! The guy is pure brilliant!

And they have Guerin and Staal out, need a W boys! Keep the pedal to the metal!

  659. HardHabits says:

Reality sets in. Habs lose next game no way they come back down 3-1 twice in a row.

  660. punkster says:

    Riiiight. The reverse HH jinx?

  661. Habscore says:

Well, it was a tight game. I’m disappointed on the few pessimist ones below,  cuz the boys played physically and they’ve played tonight. We’re not bad at all without Marky and Spacek, tho it’s obvious we need them both. We may have won it if we would’ve scored on the first period, and we were so close. I’m still very surprised on how they can contain and play against the Caps and Pens.

    We’ll get ‘em on thursday!

    – YES HABS CAN!! –

  662. T-roy West says:

I actually don’t mind Carcillo, lol.

  663. Propwash says:

I guess Lapierre is Carcillo Lite

Goalies in Montreal have two roles, netminder and scapegoat.

  664. showey47 says:

I don’t mind carcillo, the player who fights and scores 10-12 goals. I could do without the diving though. Don’t know if you saw the huge embelishment on begin yesterday. That kind of play even wears thin on your own team mates eventually, never mind the rest of the league and officials.

  665. showey47 says:

So did darche even play a shift?

  666. TripleX says:

According to JM and most of the brillian minds on HIO, SK is a danger to the system if he replaces Darche on the bench. Did Metro play more than two shifts?  I really don’t get what Darche does on the bench that is soooooo valuable to JM??

  667. ed lopaz says:

    Habs hockey = Smart hockey

we work as a team, and we win as a team.

we play 5 man defence – not just 2. we play with energy,

we play with Subban in Markov’s place (for now) – Pk could have been with us since the Olympics, but nevermind that.

    excellent period by Les Glorieux

play that way and we can beat any team in the league.

this is becoming a terrific hockey team.

  668. wotever says:

Hey Ed, just a comment. Your sig is getting longer and it’s at the beginning of your post. It doesn’t actually look like you have any content. It’s not easy to parse where the content is. The point of a sig being after (and well demarcated) is so that you can get your message across but it’s easy to skip for pele who have read it before.

You’ll have to speak up – I’m wearing a towel.

  669. Keith says:

The whiner is on CBC now.

  670. Shiloh says:

The replays show that Cammy hit the post too.

  671. HABdriven says:

Terrific period by the Habs.  Great puck control on our first PP.  Laps came close towards the end of the period and hit the crossbar.  If we keep up the pressure in the 2nd, we will cash in.  Absolutely love Subban’s energy.  GO HABS!!!!!!

  672. gumper says:

True dat. I didn’t like the sound of “possible career ending injury” stated earlier. Let’s hope it’s just the wagging of idle tongues.

  673. Morocco says:

We keep blowing our quality scoring chances, I wouldn’t say Fleury is doing that great yet.

  674. K-hab25 says:

I hope so AB, I really hope so. I think if we can get the first goal we’ll win, but I’m really not sure we will if they do. Anyway enough negativity, GO HABS GO!!!!!!!

  675. arcosenate says:

Markov is never around when you need him most.

    It sucks, it really sucks.

If he can’t stay healthy he’s not much use when it counts.

And it’s alot of money to pay as well.

And yes I would keep him in the hope his injuries are over but it’s alot of wear and tear on a body.

  676. SeriousFan09 says:

Damn Markov and his non cut-proof tendons and vulnerable knee ligaments!!!

Serge Savard shattered his left leg in 5 places in 1970, needed 3 surgeries and then the next season, he broke that leg again. It was worse and took a year in the half restore to his leg strength after that to the point where he could play in the NHL again. He perservered, the team management stuck with him and he became a part of one of the most legendary teams in NHL History. He still played for the 72 Summit Series and nine further NHL seasons before he retired and on that bad leg, he had five Stanley Cup wins to his credit.

Not saying Markov is Savard, but the great blueliners (And Markov is the best we’ve had since Chelios left) find a way to stay in the game and contribute. If he can recover, he’ll give us all he has and we wouldn’t have made the playoffs without him either.

  678. Les-Habitants says:

This is the first time he’s had any real injury problems.  He’ll have the off-season to rehab, and he’ll hopefully in fine form for next season.

  679. punkster says:

Punkster likes this comment. Punkster’s gonna go to bed repeating this comment over and over. :)

  680. T-roy West says:

I just think that like him or hate him he plays his role to a “T”. Just saying.

  681. fuhgawz says:

Ok — we just won without Markov last game we CAN continue to do it —

Jaro plays great, Gill & Josh frustrate Sid and Gino, Habs capitalize on thier chances we can DO THIS !!!

    GO HABS GO !!!

  682. arcosenate says:

I know, I am venting, we haven’t had the benefit of him in the lineup consistantly for a while.

    Ah, maybe next year.

  683. CBrady12 says:

    We can only hope

  684. andrewberkshire says:

Amazing game, but we really need a lead here soon! Halak is just razor sharp, unreal that he maintained that focus after such a boring 1st period.

  685. T-roy West says:

I love it how Subban clears the zone by flicking the puck up in the air instead of making a risky, clear the zone pass up the middle.

  686. PrimeTime says:

Habs need to get back control of this game before it’s too late.

  687. SeriousFan09 says:
