That’s why they’re the champs

Tough to beat them with 18 shots.

The Canadiens wasted a dominant first period.

Many people are missing the important point.  A smart coach plays his BEST players.  Is Darche and Maxwell an improvement on a line of Metro, AK and SK?  It is so obvious a move it makes me crazy!

What is the possible downside?  If the brothers suck then sit them like JM sits Darche and Maxwell anyway.  But what if they click and make an effective line?

Again, Ill come right back and tell you that Darche might not have that much TOI but Sergei is in the PRESS BOX so what does that say about how comfortable he is in using him. If you are going to argue that JM is incompetent because he wont use sergei than why are you arguing in JM favor about his usage of Darche.

It boils down to this, they would both play on the 4th line….he has to decide who is going to give him more on the 4th line and obviously he has chosen Darche. I agree with him for obvious reasons and you disagree because you somehow think Sergei will all of a sudden be a difference maker….sorry to tell you but he wont.

  13. avatar_58 says:

1 mistake = benched eh? Funny because I witnessed several mistakes by different forwards and d-men. Stupid uncalled for penalties too, but our top forwards. What exactly did Sergei do of late to make it a one strike-your out deal?

  19. SeriousFan09 says:

I remember Sergei covering the point so a defencemen couldn’t rush the play, I remember Hamrlik getting beaten badly by Ovechkin as he hopelessly tried to match pace with OV (There’s a laugher for you) instead of sticking to better positional play. Hamrlik blew the coverage that led to the goal there.

    – I shall always remember Captain Koivu.

  20. TripleX says:

Behind by two goals late in the third and the top six are out of gas.  JM looks down the bench for some offensive spark from the bottom two lines who are still fresh.  Who would you rather have on the ice?  Darche and Maxwell or Metro, AK and SK?

Having a fourth line with Metro, AK and SK as a backup is just smart, especially as the fourth line has averaged less than two minutes a game anyway.  If the line is clicking it is all gravy if not you will not miss Darche and Maxwell.  It is a win win situation.

  21. CBrady12 says:

Here is the link that shows Sergei’s last shift….after this he was benched then left out of the lineup

click on the video of Ovechkins goal and youll see

  22. SeriousFan09 says:

I hope a good cap-friendly deal can be signed BUT the market for defencemen has become rather cornered. Would anyone argue Komisarek is worth 4.5 million? Anton Volchenkov figures he can get at least that much n his next deal. Is Brian Campbell in Chicago worth 7.1? Sather’s signings in NY have done wonders for overinflating defencemen value, Chara, okay he’s got a Norris but a year older than Markov and he’s getting 7.5 a year on his current contract.

I want something worked out, but I also acknowledge that unfortunately, the incompetence of the NHL has made it harder for teams to negotiate good deals with pending UFAs.

  28. likehoy says:

well if you look at the trend of NHL contracts, they’re all long term deals that take them to 40, and the years from 35 to 40 decrease in value.

if we put markov down for a 5 year term, he would be 37 at the end of the contract, and if we chose to re-sign him, his money will be on the books even if he retires or gets sent down (see: Jaroslav Spacek).

as a GM, pierre gauthier does not want to put himself in the same situation we are in with spacek, with markov. he’s gotta be creative and lock markov up long term, and at the same time, lower his cap hit.

similar deals are hossa’s and savard’s. savard goes for 7-7-6.5-5-1.5-.525-.525 (cap hit of 4.2). he’s currently 32 and would be making 36 when he’s making 1.5m.

savard is a top 5 playmaker in the league, and markov is a top 10 dman in the league, so it’s comparable, the contract i suggested (with alterations of course) suggst that markov gets paid like a top D for the first 4 years, and then tail off for the last 4, which is identical to savard’s deal.

  30. SeriousFan09 says:

I remember some yellow journalism by the French press last year that tried to link the brothers to organized crime during a bad NHL season so they had to sensationalize some stories that turned into a whole lot of nothing because they were looking to sell more newspapers during a bad part of the season and sold their journalistic integrity along with it. Also, believe it or not, sometimes reporters EMBELLISH stories to get more viewers on their program, like when Tony Marinaro reported a heated remark from Markov to Price earlier in the year, a type of remark that is probably passed between different teammates 10,000 times a year.

Darche has how much TOI in the NHL playoffs btw? That should tell you how comfortable JM feels about throwing that guy out there on the ice, he’s played a little over 3 minutes in his last two games combined. He doesn’t have an NHL-calibre skill set and the regular season is the regular season, his GPG % ignored, when has he looked like he wasn’t completely, utterly outclassed in the Playoffs? He’s not a regular forward on any proper NHL team, he was an injury fill-in and that’s all he ever was. Matt D’Agostini in 08-09 has a better GPG than Darche does as well, should we trade to get him back?

What makes the NHL playoffs so compelling are the storylines.

Knowing they don’t have enough raw firepower to shoot it out with the better teams, the Habs committed to a rope-a-dope strategy that forces opponents to take a lot of shots from the outside.

Washington refused to adjust, simply assuming their superior talent would prevail. In this round, the Pens have the advantage of hindsight. They know that must adapt or risk suffering the same fate as Washington. It will be interesting to see what they do to counter Montreal’s approach.

I’m not crazy about Martin but I like the nothing-to-lose approach. The Habs know you only have to play a little better than .500 to win a series … and Stanley Cup. Pittsburgh is going to win games; Montreal can’t keep Malkin and Crosby bottled up all the time, can they?

Admirable in its execution, the Habs’ system is a fragile one to some extent. It requires a lights-out goalie who doesn’t give up rebounds. And an opportunistic offense that can take advantage of limited scoring opportunities. To take this series to the limit, Montreal needs scoring from someone other than Cammalleri, Pleks, and Gionta. Pouliot and Dead Man Skating have to contribute. I suspect that it the series turns Pittsburgh’s way, Martin will loosen the reins on Subban and make him a bigger part of the offense.

More props to Gainey. He brought in hard-working players who have won championships and a veteran coach who’s able to work from his team’s strengths.

Hey buddy, i dont know even know where to start. First off I listen to MArtin Mcguire who is probably the person the MOST connected with the Canadiens and he said this morning that there are player who dont want to be named who say that this kid doesnt care and they dont want to play with someone who doesnt care. Secondly you have a short memory, he was a problem last season, remember the news paper headline…..

“If Sergei was that much of a problem, he would’ve been kicked in the summer or this season, the way Gainey dealt Grabovski because he was a complete ***.”

he was taken care of, he was sent to Hamilton and told he would be traded. The only probelem was NO TEAM WANTED HIM!!

If Darche is such a farce than why does he have a better goals per game % than sergei??

Man for a guy named serious fan im not too impressed.

  37. SeriousFan09 says:

Darche is not an NHL forward, he was a nice little feel-good story through the injury-plagued season but the playoffs have proven he can’t handle this level of hockey. He just doesn’t have it in him despite all that valuable heart.

    – I shall always remember Captain Koivu.

  38. SeriousFan09 says:

He’ll need more than that, Cammalleri just had an MCL sprain and AK didn’t have a ligament tear, ACL tears require surgery and several months of recovery.

Markov can command 7 million in his next contract year in free agency, the team would be fortunate to sign him to 6 per year on a 5 year term I’d say. Regardless of some injury troubles, the one that really sidelined him was a freak accident and won’t repeat thanks to the new kevlar hockey socks he wears. He’s still a Top 10 NHL defencemen and teams will give up a lot to get them including outspending each other in the cap.

    – I shall always remember Captain Koivu.

  39. CBrady12 says:

Why does everyone want to see a kid play who doesnt try and really doesn’t care???? Not playing really doesnt bother him…hes collecting his cheques. I am less perplexed about JM not using him than why everyone seems to think there is an upside to playing this kid. He scored 7 goals this season in 60 games this season. Darche scored 5 in 30 games…. I dunno, I guess I would just rather see a guy who gonna go to war and do whatever it takes to win than some kid with some skills but no heart and no work ethic.

  40. SeriousFan09 says:

Do you have a lot of close personal chats with the Montreal Canadiens? If we can’t afford passengers, WHY is Darche playing under a minute a game? Because he’s not an NHL forward and having him on the bench is a farce, on for under a minute, only one of 5 Canadiens to go – on Sunday afternoon.

If Sergei was that much of a problem, he would’ve been kicked in the summer or this season, the way Gainey dealt Grabovski because he was a complete ***.

    – I shall always remember Captain Koivu.

  41. likehoy says:

if that’s true, he’ll require surgery and will be out for 6 weeks like AK and cammy.

next year is markov’s contract year, he’d be 32. I wouldn’t sign him to more than 4 million per year given 3 serious injuries in 1 year. his legs will be gone by the age of 35 (just like alex kovalev). markov could still provide a stabilizing force on defense with a good break out pass, and can still control the PP, but we won’t see many rushes up the ice from him anymore.

i think ideally we’d have to sign markov to a 7-8 year deal, cap hit of around 3 million. something like

6-6-5-4-3-2-1-1 (cap hit at 3.5 million)

he’s become a target, and it’s frustrating to watch people always gunning to take him out.

Sergei ??? probably not

That said, I would have inserted Sergei into the linup.  There is no point having a 4th line that only plays 4-5 minutes.  Sergei has shown he can be an intelligent defensive forward from his work on the PK, and the brothers have played well together in the past.  Metro is an intelligent center man, and you could turn this 4th line into something of a threat.
