Still number one

Canadiens are alone atop the Northeast Division after Ottawa got stomped 5-1 in Carolina this afternoon.

Former Senator Joe Corvo scored a hat trick and had five shots on goal. Patrick Eaves, who also went to Carolina in the deal that brought Mike Commodore and Cory Stillman to Ottawa, had six shots and a goal.

Eric Staal had EIGHT SoG and three assists. The renascent Sergei Samsonov had two assists.

Ottawa took a dozen minor penalties and was outshot 32-17.

I used to think Canadiens would be in the cat-bird seat finishing sixth and facing the weak-sister Southeast Division leader. With Carolina, I’m not so sure. So Canadiens will just have to win the Northeast and play the seventh or eighth seed.

In another afternoon game, Pittsburgh edged Philadelphia 7-1.

I wonder if John Stevens is going to get axed. The Flyers totally suck and seem to have quit on him.
