    Fred,

I think Mike is using reverse psychology, if we are expected to win, to much pressure. So we go in as under dogs and the luck takes precedence.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH MR. BOONE. I was really starting to worry you were gonna pick the Habs in this series. But as usual you have come through for us. Have no fear, I am wearing the same sweater I have been for both the first two series. Its costing me a fortune to keep my house cold enough to wear it in this Wash DC heat.

Philly in 6………… I mean I have never seen a team that PLANS to get into overtime in order to win. 10 times in a row??? Never gonna happen.

    GO HABS GO.

There may be other teams, but only ONE Club De Hockey…

  9. nightmare_49 says:

This is the first time that Mr.Boone has gone this far in the Cup run with HI/O …….. the last time he had this much pressure on him was at the All Star game in Montreal, and we all remember the Milan Hejduk incident, lol. ……. I have faith in him.

  10. Fred D says:

Mental gymnastics are Mike’s way of being a “Boon” (e)  to the Canadiens!

Stay tuned for further developments as we start winning!

As stated elsewhere, Habs in 5 after a low scoring loss early in the series, to get over the letdown of having beaten the best in the league already.

  11. Puck Bard says:

Picking the Habs would have been the DOOM OF BOONE.

Gionta, Gomez and Gill know the Flyers extremely well this will absolutely help.

Other cup winners to not forget: Laviolette and Muller.

All the details are important in this series.  Check for the little things tonight.

I count on Gonez and Plekanec to shut down the top lines.

Moen, Lapierre and Moore will have an awesome series.

    X-Factor: Andrei

  16. Josh says:

Good, predict the Habs to lose this series like all the analysts. That way they can go into this series as the underdogs again.

  17. Mr.Hazard says:

I don’t think the Canadiens can win if they’re
outchanced 2-1 by the likes of Mike Richards, Simon Gagné,
Daniel Brière, Claude Giroux and James van Riemsdyk.

SERIOUSLY Boone? After being outchanced 2-1 by Alex Ovechkin & Co., and then by Sidney Crosby & Co., and STILL WINNING, you’re worried the Flyers will be more dangerous?

  18. Slovak says:

I is so sad – it seems in Montreal one need to win bag of cups to turn some people to BELIEVE

And at the same time I wonder, how can one (professional, reporter, columnist or whoever) watch games without belief his team will win…

  19. EricInStL says:

Wash + Philly played hockey against the Habs and they lost. Phily will know what to do, and have the players to do it. BUT and this is the most important thing, we must convert at a very high ate our powerplay opportunities. Once you score 1 or 2 goals, this will calm down the aggressive play of the Flyers.

We have more speed and must be aggressive against their slow D. We cannot play rope-a-dope.

The first 5 minutes of the game will be all Phily. Weather the storm, and then execute.

AK has to continue from the last game. And Pouliot must be a factor.

Which Max will we see ? The one who shows up, or the one that does not go in the corners. This is an important point, we need that from him.

This series will go 5 games max. Problem is, it can go either way. The series to watch is the western one.

MTL in 5, SJ in 6

    In Guy Boucher I trust.

  20. habs001 says:

  23. fun police says:

crosby was asked immediately after the game, he still had half of his equipment on.  read between the lines of what he said.  he said, “we were the better team”.  the problem with that is most would agree, the better team won.  in game seven, the habs were outchancing the pens big time.  a combination of a big lead and penalty trouble slowed the habs momentum.  so what.

the flyers will be more physical.  will they be more physical than washington? the flyers are one of the most penalized teams in the league, and if that trend continues our special teams will kill them. they don’t have the goaltending and the habs won’t give up the goals that the bruins did.

habs in six (would say five, but that is pushing it.)

  24. JFriedman says:

Boone I can’t believe you would pick the Flyers after everything the Habs have achieved.

    Very disapointing.

  25. Propwash says:

The difference is….we buried more of our chances.

Goalies in Montreal have two roles, netminder and scapegoat.

  26. HotHabs says:

Outshot, yes.  Not outchanced.  Sorry, Boone, but I don’t buy the “logic” of Cindy Criesby.  Habs took advantage of scoring opps & mediocre goaltending vs. Pitts.  They did a fantastic job of shutting down the Pens goal scorers.  What this has to do with luck or the thought of excellent play running out, I don’t know.

Compared to Caps & Pens, the Habs are runts, but they play fast and smart.  Philly doesn’t have the speed of Mtl.  The Flyers’ goaltending will be put to the test (ya, that’s you Leighton).  Halak has been tested and is now head of the class.  Expect Pronger to visit the ‘sin bin’ every game as frustration mounts.

Habs will win this series.  In how many games, I don’t know, but it could be as low as 5.

  27. i gloriosi says:

hey i think everyone should RELAX with their picking Philly over Montreal, i mean c’mon Philly beat Boston but i seriously think the Leafs could have beat Boston for how much they sucked and were lacking in heart, determination and offence…

Habs will split in Philly then in Mtl before winning back to back in Philly and Mtl…Les Glorieux in 6

  28. Puck Bard says:

Yup, just what I was thinking. When you’ve been in this game as long as Boone the Psyche-Ops really get a workout.

  29. Lafrich says:

Outchanced? How can something so unbelievably subjective be a STATISTIC! Outshot? Fine. Outscored? Fine. But outchanced? Give me a break. What about the QUALITY of the chances? Where is that “statistic”?

You DO NOT win 8 out of 14 against Washington and Pittsburgh by luck. The Habs are playing incredibly smart for the team they have. I have seen a gazillion shots from the outside from the Pens and Caps, but very few real quality scoring chances. On the other hand, it feels like the Habs do not waste too much energy trying to create opportunities when it just isn’t there. It may be incredibly defensive, but it has worked against these two offensive minded teams.

    GO HABS GO!

        Breakaways

Briere, 32, will be playing in his fourth conference final in the last five years. . . . Ian Laperierre, sidelined with a brain bruise and concussion, skated but is doubtful for the rest of the playoffs. . . . Jeff Carter (broken foot) likely won’t play in the series. . . . Halak is 10-0-1 this season when he faces at least 40 shots.

but i seriously think the Leafs could have beat Boston

Really interesting point, although perhaps for another day. That oft-repeated cliché in April — the playoffs are a whole new season — we usually forget about that in May. But it still is. The very last thing that happened to us in the last “season” was getting beat by the Leafs. Then the “new season” starts and look what happens with the Habs. I think you’re absolutely right — it’s not hard to imagine the Leafs winning a series against Boston, if somehow Toronto was allowed into the playoffs. Everything changes. Otherwise you wouldn’t need playoffs. Bettman could just check all the stats and award the Cup. For one thing, teams GROW during the playoffs, none more so this time than the Habs. I feel jittery but hopeful. Come on midnight! (wrong side of the Atlantic).

Versus commentator said this was the worse opening game loss for the Canadiens in any playoff series opener since 1919.

Goat of the game for me was Gomez–who, though the most experienced playoff performer on the Canadiens, showed lack of discipline that cost us dearly–a goal each time–at the game’s opening and at its end.  But I still prefer him in Canadiens colors over Kovalev.

I think the size of the victory–those six goals–may end up hurting Philly.  Our pride will be on the line in Game 2.  Either we’re good enough or we’re not.  We should find out quickly.

Let’s not start crapping on players here, it’s Game 1 and it ain’t over. These zeroes can be heroes again. These are the same pants we got mad in that we can get glad in.

  118. mrhabby says:

i did not think Philly played all that great..not much intimidation,  no real cheap shots. either we did not play our system or the flyers with the forcheck are taking us off our game. i did see flyers clog up the zone. we did not get anything started and looked tired after the 2nd period. get back to square one or this series could be over alot quicker than we all think.

that being said..its only the first game. forget about it and move on.

  119. thepriceiswrong says:

I hate to say this but I think this is exactly what our boys needed. They are still flying high after 2 game 7 victories on the road, thinking they can do no wrong.

Well, a nice kick in the nads by the flyers may be just what the doctor ordered. Rest up, get back to the game plan, and lets smoke them in game 2.

BTW, I know it was already mentioned but the USA chant is hilarious when the core of their team is canadian. Ignorant idiots. If this game were in MTL, fans would be going bonkers – In Philly, all they cheer for are dirty hits. Pathetic.

  120. makka83 says:

No need to worry. Halak is 4-0 this season in the game following a game where he got pulled.

Also the Phillies did not shoot alot. AND we outshot them.

    This usually means a loss…

  121. CalgaryHabsFan says:

@#%#@ yet another reason to hate the Bruins.

This looked a lot like the team we saw on too many nights during the regular season.

Hopefully they got all of the suck out of their systems tonight.

  122. TripleX says:

I made the same point earlier.  What happens when Cammi comes back to earth and Halak is just ordinary?  Well we see the ugly truth.

Beyond those two superhuman performances the shelf is pretty bare.  JM’s genius coaching?  PLEASE!

We will defeat Philly next game. Don;t worry. It’s only game 1! We still have time to bounce back. And there is no need of bashing specific players. Bottom line is that the whole team played bad. Not just Gomez (is he like the new Price?) or Subban.

  136. Slovak says:

Ok Habs needed this to wake up as usually, what to say, we know that they can bounce back even if things go very very bad, STILL BELIEVE, gonna get some sleep, this one is over bye all

This was Leighton’s first and last playoff shutout ever, we won’t make him look like Bernie Parent again.

OB will be back in the lineup to address the physical issue against the Flyers.

Team will get their act together and split the series before going home to rock it in the Bell Centre to take a 3-1 series lead.

    Gotta believe.

  147. HAB-PROFESSOR says:

REFS were pathetic…so were the Habs…. and especially JMartin.  He needs to dish-out the tough medicine, its time for BERGERON and METRO or POULIT to SIT…. insert OBRYNE and KOSTYjr.

Bergerons play is unacceptable, totally, and the blatant minor league giveaway was unreal for a team in the 3rd round…he should have been nailed to the bench after that, instead Martin is pushing big minutes on him after that play!… as well, SUBBAN better wake up because he is starting to play scared, like he overacheived, he also made multiple errors consitently througout the game.

and to repeat…I really hope those REFS watch the tapes, GOMEZ was not a slash, PYATT’s call was laughable, SPACEK was a collision and they missed the initial punch by BRIERE after kosty hit…total REF B.S. again…

JM better wake up, what small minded strategy to go with the same lineup against PITTS?, this is NOT PITTS!, this is the ROUGH FLYERS, GET OBRYNE IN THEIR ….UNREAL.

  148. HabFab says:

    Relax people!!

    O’Byrne must play next game!

but look at the bright side. MAB will NOT be back next year. neither will the K bros.,Pouliot, and hopefully Hamrlik will be traded or bought out.

I can see us with a much bigger lineup next year if PG does his homework.

but really bothers me is the lack of effort from the habs. I mean it’s the playoffs guys. don’t you care?

Philly was supposed to be the tired team, not us. Guess Philly wants it more.

O’Byrne ONE bad penalty or mistake and press box.  Pouliot and AK ONE bad penalty or mistake and benched.

A perfect game to ignore and move on to the next one.

One change I would make for game two is to take P.K off the powerplay at least until he settles down a bit.  I don’t think that the conference finals is the time for the P.K Subban show.  If he wants to take a rush or two at opportune times I’m O.K with it but he can’t be making those uselss rushes all game long and especially on the PP.  What happend to our nice, calm, organized power play?  Now guys are just flying around all over the place putting each other off side or losing the puck just over the blue line because no one knows what the hell each other are doing.

Hopefully O’Byrne will make it into game 2 and play like he has shown he can at times this season.  MAB was scary out there and it would be great if his minutes could be cut, but he is not alone.  Hamrlik is very unengaged these playoffs and is standing around too damn much watching the puck go in the net.  If I was inclined to I would put together a clip package of Hamrlik standing aruond while the puck goes in, but that would too time consuming and I don’t have enough tape to hold all the clips.

P.K has been pretty good so far but he really laid an egg this game.  Maybe cut him back a bit and bring him back to earth.  He is no superstar yet and maybe he ought to wait until next season to try to be one.

Just a complete joke. This team embarrased the whole city tonight. Everyone says how proud they are when the team wins. Now we can say how humiliated we are by their mediocrity.

  195. Ron says:

The flyer did not need to come out hitting and smashing. No punches needed to be thrown or dirty cheap shots because our Habs fell over and played dead for most of the game. The team should all be made run back to their hotel carrying full gear to break a sweat. Some of these players won’t need to have their skates sharpened for the next game as the edge should still be there. The system was not used for two and a half periods and JM and staff were unable to get much going with any of the players dressed. Mistakes were made by most everybody and I think OB and maybe even SK need to be reinserted into the line up for game 2. MAB is such a waste both the PP and even strength in this game. Time for a change. Sit maybe MAB and Darche for next game. They sure as hell have nothing to loose now.

The good news is that it would be hard to play a more brutal game than that. Felt a lot like Game 1 against Pittsburgh where their power play destroyed us and Halak got chased. The boys will bounce back next game, but it’s pretty clear OB needs to be back in the line-up and I think if you’re JM you even have to be thinking about SK74 over Pouliot or Metro. There has to be hope that something is being done to change the tone of the game. MAB was awful again tonight, although one could say that about a lot of the Habs. CMI as someone who is pissed off at Gomez for tonights play, but I guess his 10 assist mean nothing?  You guys just don’t get it.  Gomez is not a goal scorer.  He is not a goal scorer.  People keep posting how few goals he scores as though it surprises you.  Kostitsyn should be scoring goals.  Pouliot should be scoring goals.  Plekanec should be scoring goals.  Gomez is a playmaker, he gets assists.

  236. 100HABS says:

At 11:00 in the third, Pleky goes to shoot a one-timer on a rebound, but gets a cross-check in the back from Timonen. This, well before he touches the puck. He shot at the net falling down and tried again on his knees/stomach. How is this not a penalty?Obstruction or cross check, take a pick.

Early in the third, Moore gets two sets of sticks in his feet and falls right in front of the ref.

Lapierre’s penalty when he hit the guy on the boards in front of the bench – either you let it all go, or you give it to both.

He’s good.  We just haven’t been tonight.

  244. TripleX says:

You know I am really tired of hearing that sad argument.  Bob or any other GM does not pay a player 7.3 million a year to make plays.

Joe Thorton is the premier playmaker in the NHL but he also can score.  Even if I was to believe you, where are the assists and points?  Even by your definition Gomez is a complete failure.

  248. Habscore says:

So when the team loses and the whole team plays badly, why on earth are people bashing Gomez??

-His salary is not his fault

-Anyone could have had a bad penalty at the beginning….please! The refs were too strict for a playoff game tonight

    ……………………

     YES HABS CAN!!

  249. sidhu says:

Another undisciplined penalty for Gomez — inexcusable.

Bench him for the rest of the game.

If he doesn’t take the penalty in the first, cutting short our PP and giving Philly a PP, this could be a completely different game.

  250. J. Ambrose says:

Opposing teams figured out a long time ago that to neutralize MAB, you only have to pressure him high. But the Flyers took that to new levels by sending up TWO checkers on him. And they were a man down! So what does MAB do? Shoots anyways. I truly do not understand JM’s devotion to this guy.

  251. TheMock780 says:

How brutal has Gomez been tonight? It’s like someone told him and MAB that the regular season was back on

  252. danp says:

Gomez needs to be big next game. Not that that deserved a penalty.

    ….Hab4life….

  254. danp says:

I still don’t know why Pyatt got a goal tender interference on that play. He couldn’t interfere with anyone with sticks wrapped around his ribs. Strict on one side – penalties in most cases but strict – and not so strict on the other.

  255. Chuck Chuck Goose says:

Friedman just tweeted a MAB quote: “We waited to see how good they were…and now we know.”

Hey Bergy, why the hell would you WAIT to see how good a team is?!? You go out and show them how good YOU are. That works much better.  They won 4 straight elimination games to get to the East final….if he doesn’t think that’s good enough, I don’t know what the hell is.

  256. TripleX says:

  259. Eliisa says:

Timo – here I am thinking that all these posts I am reading are so depressing and just wishing that someone would come on to Habs Inside/Out and make a happy-we-can-do-this-it-is-only-game-one-afterall-and-we-did-beat-both-Washington-and-Pittsburgh post. Then what happens? Our own little ray of Sunshine appears and chases those dark clouds away.

Seriously though, nice post. I think we all needed a chuckle. :)

  260. ABHabsfan says:

In small defense of Gomez on his mini-breakaway; did you see thref right between him and the net? By the time the ref moved he was right on top of the goalie with no move but shoot. Small consolation because he was quite crap along with everyone else tonight. Though I don;t think the penalties called on him were really warranted. That “slash” on Pronger? Give me a break, what a crap call. But that is no excuse for the stinker these guys brought to the table tonight. At least it was game 1 and not 5-7. The Habs really made a mediocre team look like world-beaters. I still don’t think the Flyers are very good but if you hand it to them it will get ugly and it did.

  261. bidds55 says:

Note to Scott Gomez: If you’re gonna slash Chris Pronger, break his G** D*** leg, don’t give him a one handed love tap.

Why was MAB even dressed? His PP contribution is zero his defensive contribution is a liability. He is a deer in the Flyers’ headlights so scared that he freezes, makes rediculous passes and plays in his own end!

It was also a pitiful match for the other 19 guys that dressed up tonight. There were very few bright spots.

Now, the team needs their fans more than ever and we should not let them down. As for reading about giving MAB more ice time… JM gave him more ice time when the game was out of reach. So it didn’t really mkae a difference.

So what I am trying to say is people calm down. It was a disappointing game, but we must still remain positive, it can only go up from here…  I still maintain Habs in 6.

  362. idle says:

Who said Gomez was worth 7.3 million?  I never said that.  The fact is that that is what his salary is and it’s not going to change and bitching about it every time the team loses is not going to help anything.  His contract has nothing to do with whether or not he is playing well.  Contract should only come into the equation when deciding to sign a player or trade for a player or try to move a player.  Period end of story.  It should never be used to judge how a player is playing.  Once the game starts players salaries mean nothing.  You also can’t use the fact that Cammalleri is playing exceptional hockey to prove that Gomez is not.  Cammalleri playing better does not mean that Gomez is not playing well.  If that were the case then every player on the team other then Halak is sucking because Cammalleri is that much better.

The argument was that you don’t think Gomez is playing well and I do (with the exception of tonight)  Your throwing things like his contract (irrelevant) & Cammalleri (irrelevant) into the argument instead of backing up your claim that he is not playing well.  I don’t want to hear about his contract or what other players are doing.  Tell me why he is not playing well (other then tonight which I agree to)

We’re also facing Michael Leighton in net, and frankly this ‘more physical’ angle does’t hold water, becauese Philly takes a lot of penalties (not to mention Washington was supposed to be too physical, and Pittsburgh after them…).  If Philly takes penalties, they’re gonners.

  422. kostadis says:

The Habs defeat of the Penguins was astonishing. The Habs defeat of Washington was astonishing.

To the statistically and mathematically inclined, the answer, the only answer must have been luck.

Let me make a couple of observations.

    1. Halak’s record when he gets 40+ shots is 15-0-1.

    2. Montreal’s record when they win is to consistently get out shot

    3. Teams that are losing tend to get more shots than teams that are winning.

The problem, and I believe it is the crux of the problem, is that the mathematically inclined are focused on balanced teams. A creature that no longer exists in the NHL.

I also believe that the mathematically inclined are looking at top-teams, all of which have BAD goaltending. And using their analytical tools are expecting all good teams to be the same. In other words, the statistics are bad because they are using the data in the wrong way.

A balanced top-team would never get out shot as consistently as the Habs. But in the new NHL, there is no such thing as a balanced team. It’s like a game of rock-paper-scissors. Your weakness and strength played against his weakness and strength.

The Habs strength is it’s goaltending. uniquely among the teams they played, their Goaltenders are actually MORE talented than the bulk of their defense. The Habs defensive strength is it’s basic immobility and reach. They can’t fly out of the d-zone but they can control the d-zone with their reach.

In that context, it actually makes sense to play a style that relies on the goaltending to play well and rely on your defense to make it hard to make plays that force the goaltender to be out of position.

Watch Hal Gill on a 5-3 and you understand why Halak looks brilliant. You can’t make a pass through the slot. It’s not actually possible. His body is 6+ feet and his stick is another 6+ feet. There is NO space.

So the strategy is to let teams shoot, but not let them move the puck across the slot area or to set up in the slot.

The last four goals against Montreal were goals set up in the slot as a deflection. This is not by accident. There were no bang-bang plays that criss-crossed the zone. The best scoring chances involved Crosby and Malkin taking the puck themselves to the net. Crosby’s best chance occured on a Gil powerplay.

JM has a plan and it’s working.

  432. Dunboyne Mike says:

Mike, I love the Habs and therefore want you to stick rigidly to your M.O.! However, I would need persuading on Philly’s offensive depth. If a team’s total scoring capacity is a factor that was highly concentrated in a few players on the Penguins, maybe a few more on the Capitals, then do you mean by “depth” that it’s distributed even more widely on the Flyers, but with no superstar(s)? If so, does that not make it easier for Montreal to contain? Our top 4 D men should have less trouble dealing with Crosby-less, Ovechkin-less first lines, and now maybe even our secondary D pairings — who gave us apoplexy if they ended up on the ice with Crosby or Ovie — will be able to match up and provide containment. Just a thought.

  433. Dunboyne Mike says:

What I’m wondering is, can we depend on the officiating to protect Halak if the crashing gets ridiculous?

I find conspiracy theories hard to swallow, but I’ve been spooked since the blue-line tackle on Subban that let Malkin loose, followed by the catalogue of non-calls in that game which even had Grapes up in arms. If the League is able to play a divine intervention role in officiating, is it more likely that they prefer to see Montreal continue uninterupted on its present trajectory? Or punished for banishing the NHL’s two biggest stars from the playoffs?

Or, just slap me and tell me not be spooked any more.

Having successfully completed both the Washington Capitals Meltdown 2010™ and Pittsburgh Penguins Meltdown 2010™ the NHL’s DestinyTeam 2010™, otherwise known as the Habs, continues down the righteous path to preordained glory as it heroically plows its way through the City of Brotherly Meltdowns.

We’re proud to introduce the Philadelphia Flyers Meltdown 2010 in all its unabashed glory. Infighting, dissent, love triangles, power struggles, and overall knuckle-draggin’ hijinks ensure that not only will the Flippers melt down like a Nestle Drumstick® in the back seat of a soon-to-be rear-ended Ford Pinto® but, in addition, Chris Pronger will continue to be the NHL’s undisputed DoucheKing™.

    What do we know?

    * Although a majority of talking heads appear to be favouring the Flyers, there is one notable problem: If you take the letters in “Philadelphia Flyers” and mix ‘em around, you yield “Lip Hype Heralds Fail”, and fail they will. In epic fashion.

    * Although he long ago had control of the team wrested from his grubby mitts, former GM and resident mouth-breather Bobby Clobber continues to ClobberSlobber all over current GM Paul Holmgren, vigorously kharlamoving Holmgren’s ankles in a desperate attempt to come out ahead in a seemingly never-ending power struggle. Fallout from this vicious infighting is creeping into the dressing room and fueling the ongoing feud between Flyers captain Mike Richards and balloon-headed, overpaid goon Chris Pronger.

    * Just read this mindless gibberish Richards spewed out after his team defeated the Broonz in game 7 of their series, “I’m still trying to make some sense of this. I’m speechless right now…But what are we supposed to say? I don’t know what to say.” The erstwhile team leader is obviously an inarticulate, blithering idiot who is destined to lead his team straight down through the ice and into a hellish meltdown.

    * The Jeff Carter-Scott Hartnell-Mrs. Scott Hartnell love triangle is boiling over and has violently split the Flyer dressing room, with Scott Hartnell on one side and everyone else on the other, “Jesus, Scott, Look In The Mirror…Can You Really Blame Her?” side.

    * Briere is a combination of Brie and Gruyere. Brie is soft. Gruyere is good for melting down. If you’ve ever had a good French Onion Soup, you know what I’m talking about.

There you have it: All the makings of an epic Meltdown in store the boys from Philly. They don’t stand a chance. Won’t even know what hit ‘em.

So, sit back and relax, Hab fans: Your team of destiny will prevail.

So it is written, so it shall be done.

Is it realistic to assume Cammi will continue to score like the second coming of the ROCKET?  Is it realistic to assume Halak will continue to play like the second coming of ST. PATRICK?

Not really.  Plus the Flyers are tough, large and love playing the cycle game…..things the Habs have trouble with.  Will JM allow hockey logic to overcome his personal distaste for certain players even though playing them makes sense?  Will JM’s well known distaste for the rough stuff render him ineffective as coach.  Will Captain Kirk be able to come up with a sound strategy?

I think this will be the toughest test for the Habs as the Flyers are the perfect team to combat the Hab’s strengths.

Subban hung out to dry on one goal and MAB blows every other PP we have with his pathetic, inexusable lazy nature on the back end when he’s suppoesd to keep the puck in. The other teams know to dish the puck out on MAB’s end because he can’t catch a cold manning the point.

MAB is a terrible defencemen, no hitting power and he’s lazy, if you’re small as a D, have good positioning and good skating, he has neither.

For the second time Halik is T-I-R-E-D. He hasnt gone this deep in playofffs before we need to start Carey in this series as he’s bigger and won a Championship in Hamilton.

Now who’s laughing at BGL ? Whos gonna take care of Pronger when he levels Gionta ?

    1) Teriibly coached… hmmm Washington in 7 and Pitss in 7…

    2) SK74 = He is not a team player. he is egotistical and yes I admit he has the talent but he does not deserve to play. I don’t blame Martin for not playing him.

    3) Halak might have been tired in teh first series but he learned to play tired in teh second round.. he will be fine. Even though we give  agame to Price in there, we are in good hands with 2 capable Goalies.

4)You can’t hit what you can’t catch… Even gill said that he tried to hit Gionta for years and then he game up… Pronger is old and paying big minutes… That will wear you down eventually.. They play with 4 D… You can’t win the cup with that.

    5) F*** BGL. I never want to see that sludge here again.

  516. ArmyFan says:

It was the same thing in 1993, except the coach’s name was Demers and the goalie’s name was Roy.

They were going to get pasted by the Nordiques.  No? Oh, but they’ll never get by the Sabres.  Huh? Don’t worry, the Islanders are giant-killers – there’s no way. What? The Stanley Cup final?  There’s no way they’ll beat Gretzky and Co.

We all know how that ended.  Being labelled the underdog, the shouldn’t-be, the fluke — just more motivation.  It’s frustrating to hear, but at the end of the day isn’t it exactly what you want?

  517. Puck Bard says:

What kills me is the lack of respect for this Habs team. Flukey… Pixie Dust…

Of course it has nothing to do with their team and work ethic, the discipline of the coach, the remarkable poise of their goal tender.

  518. Keith says:

  519. Keith says:

Offensively he has REALLY struggled. But he hasnt really that much of a liability defensively tonight. I’d prefer to see Obyrne too, but we really do pick on a guy when he is down. Not much being said now about OB’s own goal.

There may be other teams, but only ONE Club De Hockey…

  521. SeriousFan09 says:

OB’s mistake was made a long time ago and he’s twice what he was last year. MAB can’t engage the body, he won’t take the hit and he either doesn’t have speed or he’s too lazy to use it (see his point coverage) and his passing is average at best.

If he hurt his shoulder and permanently lost his slapshot, he’d have to retire or join the ECHL.

  529. danhabsfan says:

there is nothing here to build on.  This was that run a team can get every 24 years or so…and they have to take advantage of it.

Everyone says Philly will take it, but can their D take on the Habs offensive players? Their depth on D is lacking, even with that horse Pronger, and their goaltending is not Halak-esque.

Sources say TSN analyst Pierre McGuire could be the frontrunner to take over the GM’s duties of the Lightning. While the Bolts have held talks with Red Wings VP Steve Yzerman, indications are he only has mild interest. Sources say the Bolts have also spoken with Kings assistant GM Ron Hextall and possibly Nashville assistant GM Paul Fenton. McGuire, a former assistant GM and player personnel director of the Hartford Whalers, was a finalist to become the Wild’s GM last summer — a job that Chuck Fletcher wound up getting.

  582. JF says:

Unfortunately, I think you’re right, Mike.  The Flyers are a much better balanced team, both offensively and defensively, than either the Capitals or the Penguins.  Their top-four on D are at least as good as ours, perhaps better, and their scoring is evenly spread out.  On our side, we are faster, and we have been playing superbly as a team, with the forwards doing an excellent job of supporting the D.  And of course goaltending – although who really knows what Michael Leighton is capable of?  But the Flyers’ tough, grinding style could make our lack of size a problem for the first time these playoffs, and if they target one of our key guys like Mike Cammalleri or Josh Gorges, we’ll be in trouble.  Then there’s coaching.  Jacques Martin did a masterly job against Bruce Boudreau and Dan Bylsma, but can he match Peter Laviolette, who took over a dysfunctional team in mid-December and has brought them to the Conference final despite rumoured locker-room dissension and despite his goaltenders going down like ninepins, overcoming a 3-0 deficit in the series against
Boston and a 3-0 deficit in Game 7.  Jacques Martin will have to deploy all the coaching skills most of us questioned during the season.  I love the way we’re playing, and I love our character and determination, but this task might be too much.

I honestly thought the Habs would be exhausted after 14 games, but the Pens swept Carolina after playing 13. Habs can beat Philly in 4-6 IMO, and then take on CHI or SJS in 7 for the Cup.

X – Well said.  Both AK46 and Pouliot have to start playing like 1st round picks.  They need to score and use their size to counteract the superior Philadelphia offense.  The other concern has to be whether or not the Montreal defense will be able to defend Halak.  Gill has great size but really isn’t a hitter.  O’Byrne just has to play, regardless of who might sit out. .  All the rest of the Dmen are kind of average when it comes to clearing the front of the crease.

Even though the statistics say this is an easier series for us than the first two, it looks like the so-called experts are for the most part staying with the Flyers. Would tend to agree that this series will be harder than the first two because of how physical it will be, but I think it is well within reach to win. A few points for tonight’s game plan:

    1) Don’t try to play hit-for-hit with the Flyers. We know they’re going to be in trying to crush our D every chance they get. We need to do the same to their smaller players, getting on guys like Briere and Giroux and Timonen when we can. But we should try to be opportunistic only and not go out of our way to make hits. We’re on the road, no need to try and pump anyone up, and there’s no need to get into playing the Flyers type of hockey. Instead, JM needs to make sure his guys play disciplined hockey, take the PPs when Philly gets over-agressive, and takes the scoring chances when Philly goes out of the way to finish the check but leave the puck. We won’t beat them by playing physical, we’ll beat them by playing smart.

    2) Traffic in the crease will be key. Our D need to keep their guys away from Halak or at least get the rebounds away so there are no in-close second chances. Would have liked to see OB in there in case MAB shows he really is too small to play a regular shift. Do we really need the 12th forward when double-shifting Cammy will get him away from the defenasive coverage he’s bound to see? At the other end, we need to be all over Leighton as well. This guy has very little experience and the Flyers have no other options, so we need to get into his head the way we did to Fleury and Theo. The Caps had another guy to go to, the Pens less so, and the Flyers least of all.

    3) Secondary scoring will be key. These are going to be tight games. Cammy is going to be heavily-covered, so guys like AK46 and Pleks need to take advantage of being the open guy, and guys further down the line-up, like Pouliot and Moore and Moen need to give us something. Their D play a lot of minutes, so if each and every shift makes them work, they will be dog-tired, especially coming of the long Bruins series.

    4) MAB and PK are going to be the key guys on D this series, if only because the PP needs to be dead-on. Flyers are a dirty team, Leighton is a weaker goalie. The PP is a huge chance to turn games around quickly.

All in all, I like the habs chances if we get decent officiating to keep the Flyers aggression under control. If we get the PP going, it makes the Flyers play with more caution and takes them off their game. I think we will end up taking at least one in Philly and possibly two. I think we have a very good chance of taking this one if we are up or even within one come the third. Calling Habs in 6, and prediction for today’s game is that the Habs come out strong and win 5-1. I think Gomez, Gionta, and Moen have big games or us tonight.

  593. ed lopaz says:

Habs hockey = Smart hockey we work as a team, and we win as a team. we play 5 man defence – not just 2.

why the Habs will win in 6 games.

    1) Habs have 4 players who have won the stanley cup; flyers have 1 – Gionta, Gomez, Moen, Gill will lead by example.

    2) Habs have the hottest goalie, Jaro Halak, in the world; flyers have a jouneyman, neverbeen. winning in the playoffs is determined by hot goaltending, and we’ve got it, baby!!

    3) Habs “small forwards” play HABS HOCKEY which, for those of you who have been living on another planet for the past 3 weeks is SMART HOCKEY.. Gionta, Gomez in particular are experienced at avoiding the cheap shot artists.

    4) Habs have Hal Gill and Josh Gorges; who have proven they can shut down any and all snipers – even the best in the world – Flyers have nothing that comes remotely close to Crosby, Malkin, Ovechkin

    5) Habs have PK SUBBAN – this will be PK’s breakout series – power play goals, and assists – PK is 21 years old, but he is the total package, and he will come up very big for us.

Habs win in 6. (including GAME 1 tonight!!!)

Before you go making major decisions like that I suggest a course in English comprehension.  I said O’Byrne needs to be in the lineup not SK.  SK is finished in Montreal, whether that is JM’s fault or SK’s will come out at a later date.

Satire works best when it has a least a shred of factual information to back it up.

“Good judgement comes from experience, and experience comes from bad judgement.”

  601. joeybarrie says:

English Comprehension? The last month I all hear from you is how TERRIBLE the Coaching / Management / Ownership is. How awful it is for us to be dressing Pyatt over SK. Why we wouldn’t have O’Byrne in over MAB.

The bashing of MAB, JM, PG, GB, Molson’s, Price, etc, etc….

I will make this comment….  We are in the Conference Finals. Do you think JM is not the one who is responsible for this? It starts with the guys BG picks. It goes on down the line to the players who will play the system that the coach wants, and the effect is a win or a loss.

Remember your saying HALAK was finished in Montreal. That was not that long ago. How about your big rants on how AWESOME SK is doing and how AK is leading the team in points……..

By saying that the coach is stupid, is pretty much showing your grasp of the subject. Saying the Molson’s only want to make money and not win, also shows the same. Lastly thinking that JM is the slightest bit responsible for SK just proves it…. How about the fact that the players say nothing to him, and pretty much just want him out of here????  Is that Carey Price’s fault, or Bob Gainey. Maybe it’s Carbo’s……..  Has there been anyone in this club that is involved in Management / Coaching / Owning that you do like???

There may be other teams, but only ONE Club De Hockey…

  602. TripleX says:

Quite the rant dude, I hope you feel better.  Unfortunately it has nothing to do with my original commentary.  As for the accuracy of the those thing that you attribute to me, well it is not even worth disputing it is so outrageous.

Again you need a course in English comprehension.  Please indicate where I said JM is stupid.  I said not to dress O’Byrne would be misguided and a fail as a coach since it is not logical.

Anyway have a good day and enjoy the games.

  604. joeybarrie says:

    Martin’s
mediocre coaching was made impressive by stellar goaltending and the
incredible record in overtime.  The miserable showing five on five and
lack of wins in regulation indicate his true measure as a coach.

    WRONG!
Halak is done in Montreal.  Management was looking for anyway to get
Price in to ease the way for trading Halak in the summer.  Get used to
seeing Price as he is our undisputed number one next season.  And I
would not wish that on anyone.

    Yeah
SK with 8 minutes of total ice time was a PLUS 2!!   Boy what a lousy
player.  Are you for real??  AK has a hat trick and is in the top ten
in scoring for the playoffs.  Are you for real??

Pouliot and Gomez are playing so much better and deserve the ice time.

    So
if JM is still the coach next year do we all agree the Molson family is
in this for money and not winning?  These two home playoff games mean
about 4 million in profit for the Molson bankbook.

We might see this as a failure but they see it as money in the bank and a job well done by the Three Amigos.

    Force
Gainey out the door?  I believe he is still a special advisor to his
protege PG.  Unfortunately Gainey was not relieved of his position
before he signed JM to a four year 16 million dollar contract, after
firing Carbo in the first year of a three year contract.  I doubt Geoff
Molson will want to pay THREE coaches next season.

    Geoff Molson
knows hockey??  That is why he promoted Boivan to be the complete head
of ALL hockey operations and allowed him to hand pick PG as GM without
interviewing a single other candidate.  The Molson family is only
interested in the bottom line and with the huge money making success of
the Centennial which was orchestrated by PG and PB and the two home
playoff games they are quite satisfied.  If you think any of the THREE
AMIGOS is leaving you are in for a big surprise.

MY PERSONAL FAVORITE was calling Tom Pyatt consistently mediocre and Minor Leaguer…

Who has the slongshot and who has the gun? Cause I don’t think you can really say the surrounding conditions  of these replies and arguments can prove anything for you. By the way, when you mention bringing in some sort of argument, evidence or proof, it goes both ways….

But your probably right, everyone here knows full well you don’t bash JM even though his opponents have said they were outcoached by him and have called him brilliant. You don’t think there is some sort of conspiracy keeping SK from being a top 6 player, even though he isnt responsible enough to even get on the bus on time. You don’t think Pyatt is useless, thank God JM disagrees.  You never bash on Price or MAB. By the way MAB has twice the points of SK and basically the same amount of ice time…

And what Martin is thinking, I don’t have the foggiest idea. The folk at BehindtheNet are going ballistic over the Canadiens’ luck, and there was a lot of that, but why are they, ostensibly, shooting themselves in the foot like that?

  627. Norm0770 says:

Hmmm…. Who comes up with these stats?  The Habs were out chanced 35-13 in game 7?  Really?  Is the Pittsburgh attack so potent that every time they cross centre it is a chance?  Was Travis Moen’s goal such a poor effort by both Gonchar and Fleury that is didn’t even count as a chance despite being a goal?

Watching Verses part way through the second period, and Verses went out of their way to discredit the Habs at every opportunity, they were counting the chances at 12-9 for the Habs and at that point the game was already put of reach for the Pens, so the Habs could afford to sit back some and to push the issue in the offensive zone.  No sense giving up odd man rushes with a 2-4 goal lead.

Scoring chances are basically shots from the slot — on goal, saves or misses. Blocked shots aren’t counted.

The 12-9 number in the second is fairly consistent with Olivier’s count actually; Pittsburgh outchanced the Habs 22-2 in the third period, and yet couldn’t score.

It’s most puzzling, because the Habs’ tactical scheme is seemingly designed to allow the opponent, be they Pittsburgh or Atlanta, as many damn shots as they wish to take. I’ve called for Martin’s head over it all year. I still don’t think it’s a sensible, or even sane approach… but for some weird reason it’s working, and nobody can explain how the hell that can possibly make a difference. But clearly Martin and the Habs think it does.

-Feb 12- 13th. A back to back vs Philly before the Olympic break. PK Subban is called up for his first two NHL games. About halfway through the game, Subban dumps the puck hard into the Philly zone from just inside the red line by the bench. Chris M.F. Pronger skates up behind the seemingly unsuspecting rookie and is set to end Subban’s career early. Suspension be damned. Subban Ducks. Pronger’s crosscheck misses and he flies over PK’s back, almost ChrisDrapering himself into the Dasherboard. How I wish I could have read lips as the camera closed in on Pronger seconds later, Yelling toward a nonchalant PK.  I think Pronger may try to finish his sentence this series.

    - Halak on three days rest

-BGL skating out in the pre-game, tearing up his code book and tossing it into the stands. Then doing something worthy of a five game suspension. I’ll gladly chip in for the fine  Q: Briere or Carcillo?

  640. J.T. says:

I think it comes down to a trade-off of O’Byrne versus a strong fourth line.  It’s a matter of where MAB hurts the team the least.  If he can be paired with a good defenceman like Spacek, he can play manageable minutes against less dangerous players and Spacek can cover for him.  On the fourth line, he’s going to be caught out against bigger, tougher players who are going to outplay him on the boards.  His presence on that line almost always means it plays five minutes or less, and at this point, the team needs four lines that can handle at least eight to ten minutes.  It’s ironic that he’s a bigger defensive disaster on the fourth line than he is on defence.

Unfortunately, MAB is the only D O’Byrne could replace right now, but that damn tempting point shot keeps him in the lineup.  The man is useless if he doesn’t score, but you neve know when he’ll blind a goalie with the sparks off his shot, so Martin keeps him in, hoping this is the night.

I cannot, for the life of me, understand why we are dressing Darche instead of O’byrne.  Put MAB on the 4th line, let O’byrne play 12 minutes on the blueline, and Darche will get pretty much the same amount of ice time he normally does;  None.

  642. JIMVINNY says:

I disagree, in that we’ve been playing with three lines nearly the entire playoffs.  Metro and Darche rarely see more than 8 minutes, and Pyatt only sees more because he sees PK icetime as well.  MAB could easily play Darche’s ES minutes, and is a better forechecker than Darche anyways.

Especially considering we don’t have last change on the road so it’s harder for JM to dictate his matchups and let his 4th line eat up some minutes, on the road it makes more sense to have a 7th D, but at home the active 4th line works out more.

  647. SeriousFan09 says:

Saw the Bulldogs this afternoon,  not very impressive really, depth issues are hurting the team especially with Subban up in Montreal, Weber and Carle injured so basically, the transition game is dead. However, the Texas Stars have about the worst blue line I’ve seen watching AHL games, they had NOTHING back there on PPs, it was pathetic beyond belief. I think the Dogs may seal this thing up on the road. Mike Komisarek could quarterback the Dallas PP better than anyone they have.

Depth has hurt the team, but the guys remaining are turning it up as they can and executing on their chances, didn’t really see Gabriel Dumont that much on the ice, limited ice time but he wasn’t really that impresssive but getting dropped into the AHL playoffs was more to do with Dogs depth problems than anything not because he was meant to be an immediate difference-maker. Saw it with a friend from school, good times and my Dogs viewing record improves to 5-0-0 at Copps.

Game one is a game that the Habs should really go after. The Habs had a bit more time to get back to reality than the Flyers so we must strike while Philly is still a little giddy over their historic comeback.

I’m on the OB side of the debate but MAB on the fourth line? I’m thinking the PP is going to be a huge part of this series so we can use the BOMB. But MAB is a give away machine on the PP. Darche plays pretty solid at times but probably needs more icetime to get it going.
