By making it to Game 7 against a top-seeded team, your Montreal Canadiens have salvaged their season.
And before we get hung up on the chances of eliminating the mighty Washington Capitals in their building, let’s take a moment to reflect on some of the misfortune that has befallen this team:
• The Canadiens lost their best player less than 60 minutes into the season opener.
• Subsequent injuries cost them the services of Brian Gionta, Hal Gill, Andrei Kostitsyn and Mike Cammalleri.
• For the first time in their 100-year history, the Canadiens played a captain-less season.
• The team never had a clearly-defined number one goaltender.
• In adition to eight new players in the lineup on opening night in Toronto, the Canadiens had a new coach teaching a new system to Bob Gainey’s chemistry-experiment team.
• Also in the lineup as the season began: Max Pacioretty, Guillaume Latendresse, Matt D’Agostini and – last and easily least – Georges Laraque.
• George Gillett sold the club.
• Gainey resigned.
Through all that turmoil, the Canadiens never imploded.
Nor did they quit. You could count on one hand the number of blowout losses.
On paper, this team was never a serious contender for a 25th Stanley Cup.
But on the ice, the guys wearing blue-blanc-rouge this season gave everything they had to give.
No superstars.
But no floaters.
A year ago in Boston, Milan Lucic and his teammates were laughing at the dispirited, rag-tag group of losers the Bruins were punching out in four games.
Think any of the Washington Capitals are laughing?
I hope the thunderous ovation that greeted the selection of Jaro Halak as Game 6′s first star wasn’t the last we’ll hear in the Bell Centre this spring.
But no matter what happens in Game 7, your Montreal Canadiens have done the franchise and the city proud.

But not so with the Montreal Canadiens. Jaroslav Halak is just one
of the guys. The 24-year-old is fair game to kibitzing, practical jokes

described his news making teammate as unassuming. He told a story to
illustrate Halak’s regular-guy status. The incident occurred in the
morning skate on Monday before Halak’s club playoff record 53 saves in Game 6 that forced a seventh and deciding game against the Washington Capitals.

I believe the way Gomez’s contract works is that at the end of each season, he provides a list of 3 teams he will not accept a trade to, so after last season, Montreal was not one of the 3 teams he did not want to go to. As for the trade, from the Rangers end it was purely a salary dump, what ever they got back was gravy. Higgins was not going to be re-signed in Montreal so no loss there. The jury is still out on McDonagh though.

This is also a team that really never found it’s chemistry, and still is looking to a point, until late in the season due to numerous injuries.

I have this sickly feeling that no one can just enjoy a hockey game anymore….
I agree with Mr. Boone. It was a frustrating, roller coaster of a season. The season was greatly affected by the injuries that the team suffered. We played well some games, and tanked others. But the team never quit. Some of our players were dissapointing (See: Kostitsyn, Andrei), but most worked very hard. The team is totally different then two years ago, from the management to the players. Because of this series against Washington, I think the season has been succesful. Didn’t expect a Cup and still don’t. But we have scared the crap out of the Caps and i think we have shown that this team will not win the Cup this eason. And Habs fans can be proud of this team. Let’s hope Les Glorieux pull it off tomorrow.

Well said Boone. A team like this, with the season they’ve been through, is a true test for the real fan. If you’ve stuck with them all season, then you can enjoy this last game with a clear conscious. If you spent the better part of the year riding the players, the coach, the GM, the goalies, and Youppi, then you might want to admit that you have been less then fair to this group of warriors.
Whether you jumped on the bandwagon last night, or you’ve been with them all along… enjoy tomorrow night, and remember that, although some of you rip on Bob Gainey for not delivering on his promises to bring us a cup, he did give us a team we can be proud of.
I won’t go as far as to predict a Habs win tomorrow, but I am convinced the Canadiens playing their best hockey of the season.
I am not a Jacques Martin fan, but I’ve been impressed with the adjustments he and the coaching staff have made during the series.

Well guess what? Umberger was right on. And it’s happening before our eyes.
In this series we’ve seen the Habs cash in when Ovechkin is dogging it or making a lazy change. And the Washington media is reporting that he didn’t show up for the team’s optional practice today. Excuse me, isn’t he the Captain? It’s ridiculous to compare him to Crosby.
Boudreau is melting in the media glare. Neither Caps goalie instills much confidence and now Washington has lost their best defender in this series, Tom Poti.
The stage is set for a collapse of massive proportions. If the Habs jump out to a lead and Halak continues to play well tomorrow may be another special day for hockey’s signature franchise.
Losing Markov hurt the team in the standings but it hilighted the defficiencies of the rest of the defence corps. PK will handle the spot for the second puck moving defenceman for the next few years but we still need a tougher, meaner partner for him than Hamrlik or Spacek.
Our forwards are still undersized and we need a big 3rd line center and a tough guy who can also play.
AK and SK remain enigmas, and who knows if Pacioretty is ever going to be NHL ready.
Game 7 is up in the air now, but we will need Halak to steal it. After that its either golf or a very confident yet offensively challenged Bruin’s team.
I think the point of Mike’s comment was that losing with honor, having shown heart, grit and determination is far better than “tanking” (or quitting if you prefer). At this stage of the season, it’s the men on the ice and not Management that shows what they are made of. This team, this year, has been far more exciting to watch than the teams we saw in the last two years. I at least get the feeling that the individuals are trying for the upset.
To prejudge what may or may not happen, if we win or if we lose is a waste of thought.
One game at a time and please, give credit where it is due!

Gomez’s contract was not written by the Habs organization and I hardly think anyone would seriously expect him to give a discount for playing in Montreal.
Wanna bet he has taken a serious paycut in taxes moving from the US to Canada and

They wanted the player, he agreed to waive a NMC and come to Montreal, the contract was the down side of a deal which looks not to bad now as Higgins has been a complete bust, the other two aren’t playing in the NHL and the throw-in Tom Pyatt is contributing at the NHL level in 2010!

Very happy the boys battled through, and especially since the meltdown of game 2! It’s easy to forget how much went on in front of the camera, never mind how much went on behind the scenes that we don’t know. I’m guessing Bob Gainey knew what he was looking for and found most of it. They played just hard enough to make the playoffs and have saved their best for game 7 I’m sure. Lookout Sid, you’re next!

Look at how garbage the 2003-2004 Canadiens roster was. This team is way better positioned than it was 6 years ago. Depth in goal, a talented and hard-working top-6, a solid top-4 and one of the best young prospects in the league in PK Subban.
Since the salary-cap came into effect, very few non-tanking teams have improved as much as Montreal.

Sounds like somebody’s trying to rationalize a potential loss tomorrow night. We’re here because we have a goaltender that has been lights out awesome, but it’s the wrong guy, because it was supposed to be Price who was the one to carry the team thus far. There are glaring holes in this team. Fortunately that glaring hole is rarely Halak, but as good as he can be, he still has his off games, games where if he faulters the team as a whole doesn’t have the guns, the size, the grit, the panache, to get it done.
Too many pollyannas here. I believe the Habs have a good shot at winning this series if only because the pressure is squarely on the Caps’ shoulders, but I wont be jumping for joy even if they do win. That’d only be one round out of four with three to go.
All this elation appears like a psychological reflex so as to not be too disappointed should the Habs lose tomorrow night. It’s quite pathetic really.

Goaltending wins Stanley Cups. Ask the Flyers if they would rather have the best goaltending or the best team on paper. They know what it’s like to be the best team with the worst goaltending. Having to get 5 goals in a game to is much more difficult than needing only two.
You only have to win four games out of seven not all seven. And the Habs only need to win a game Wednesday night. The Caps won 3 games doing it their way and the Habs won 3 games doing it their way. I will take the hot goaltender over a bunch of superstars that are frustrated and squeasing the crap out of their sticks.
p.s. The Habs have a handful of guys that can put the puck in the net with a single chance at it.

I know it’s in part a quirk of scheduling, and that we may well lose Game 7 in a huge, embarrassing blowout. But think about it this way: Right now, and for the next several hours, there are 21 NHL teams and 21 NHL fanbases wishing they were in our place. That’s not too shabby… and especially not if this team is half as bad as some of you seem to think it is.
I’d also like to note: With Detroit’s win tonight, in the West, Seeds 1, 2, 3 and 5 have advanced. In the East, 4, 6, and 7 have advanced… I think it’s time for the 8th seed in the East to take its rightful place in the number sequence, don’t you?

I stuck by this team since ’73 which is when I started watching them. I sat through two years of the Broad Street Bullies and loved when Robinson took out Schultz in game 1 of the ’76 final. I watched the too many men on the ice game live. I watched as Steve Penny and coach Lemaire brought the Islanders to 2 games from missing the finals. I was at the Forum when Claude Lemiuex scored in a 1-0 game against Calgary in ’86 finals. I stuck with this team from ’93, well before HIO was a glint in Boones’ eye, up to today. I believe what I see. Faith is for those who haven’t the cognitive ability to see reality and accept fact or truths.
I support my team and I want them to not just win the Cup but to play outstanding and exciting hockey. Right now Halak is MVP. That’s awesome. Without him though, we’re a bottom feeder. That’s the reality.
Maybe you took it like I meant that others here are not real fans and let me re-iterate, anyone who comes here is a real Habs fan. That icludes keepthefaith and RetroMikey, 24Cups and Tis Himself. Heck even Habs_Guru was a real Habs fan albeit a total a-hole. We have different opinions and we debate, but RM is a real fan, as much as people say he isn’t. You are too. I have no issue with that.
But invariably I could give a rat’s ass what anyone here thinks or says, unless it’s something poignant, intelligent or funny.

For Habs to win tomorrow:
1) Great goaltending from Halak (make me a believer)
2) 1st.10 minutes will be crucial. They’re goint to try to throw the kitchen sink at us, bash Halak, and get special treatment from Bettman’s hand picked Refs. If however we can hold on and score one or even better 2 goals they will be the ones whose hands start gripping the stick too hard, over passing or trying to do it all themselves and best of all take stupid penalties that EVEN BETTMANS HAND PICKED ZEBRAS can’t ignore.
3) Last minute of 1st and 2nd periods.
4) Cammy, Gionta, Gomez Gill Metro Pyatt PJ MAB Moen etc. all of BG’s newcomers play the games of their lives to shut the f#@k up all the BG haters who dwelt all year about last years team of losers and if they were here how good we would have been.

This team has “competed” in every game this series and, as a result, we’ve got a seventh game against a prohibitive favorite. Competing means going hard on every forecheck, backcheck, loose puck, rebound, faceoff, penalty kill and power play. Competing doesn’t guarantee winning but it does demonstrate a team’s spirit, desire, heart and passion. Competing pnly happens when teammates play to their highest level FOR each other, not in spite of each other. This team has been the best TEAM we’ve seen in several seasons. For that alone, I am grateful for and appreciative of their competitive spirit this year.

I dont agree with the ‘on paper the habs were never a serious contender’ part. What team has 4 stacked lines with the salary cap and all? Our top 2 lines may be arent as spectacular as some first lines but our 3rd and 4th lines stack up well. If the D can play like it can, theres no reason to feel that we’re a lesser team. I think if the habs eliminate the Caps, they can go all the way. They are playing with house money: all out with nothing to lose.
My dream scenario now that Detroit won. We beat Wash tonight, Pitt next round, Boston beats Philly and Detroit and Chicago advance for an original six final four.
The NHL will not let this happen
That would be neat…it would also give people a chance to see all the archived Original Six playoff footage…not the Habs-Bruins though…we’ve all seen it given the playoffs of recent years…

Long time reader first time poster. I’m a native Montrealer living in suburban MD. Got tix for tonight via craigslist. They are pricey but half of what they would be at the bell center. Gives you an indication of the true level of interest in what is slowly becoming a hockey town. I’m wearing my high school alumni tie today. It’s the only piece of clothing I have from pre ’93. My six year old is off to see his first game tonight. Thank god he’s a habs fan!

I think what Mr. Biter means when he says that is that he’s looking for more consistency game-to-game. Jaro was spectacular in games 5 and 6 after his rest, but he’s also the same guy that had an .820 SV% before he was pulled in game 3.
Which Jaro will we see tonight? Hopefully (and my money’s on) the former.

Amen to that! I stood by these guys through all the negative talk and I’m glad I did. Whether we lose on Wednesday doesn’t matter to me at this point. That game last night made me happy for any loss we take tomorrow or in the weeks to come.
