Speaking of “you think Mtl fans are tough…” Peter Maher the Calg play-by-play guy said on the radio today that when Mike Vernon was the Flames goalie he was regularly and consistently jeered by fans because he was a Calgary native “with a real swagger” and the other homeboys thought he had got too big for his britches when he turned pro. BUT not only would they jeer Vernon but they would jeer and catcall Vernon’s parents sitting in the stands so much that the parents stopped going to Vernon’s games.
Shultz is playing tonight.. RDS had an interview with him, hes very excited. Avstin will not play, but he is not injured I think they want to play him with Pleks and Cammalleri maybe??

Martin McGuire’s piece, while probably accurate, actually means nothing. So if Carey hates it here, he can go. It’s not like there are a shortage of NHL caliber goalies that aren’t available.
It would be sad, but if it’s what’s best for Carey then so be it. Like all jobs and all people, he is a replaceable asset (albeit not with anyone currently in our system).
Looking forward to seeing the EGG line in action, and hopefully watching Ryan White play with plenty of jam!
Love the article by chris boyle and finally im starting to see a turn in the media! Rational thinking and people wanting to stand against the idiots who boo their own team! Fans wonder why no one wants to play here and why management can’t get any superstars here. Well take a look in the mirror because its you, you’re the reason. Now wake up realize you are hurting the organization in which you claim to love. I hear boone and people say its your right to boo since you pay so much to see a game at the bell and it is. However, as a fan (if you are actually fans) you have no right to boo and by doing so you demonstrate the exact opposite. So decide now, are you fans of les habitants? or just pessimists who are depressed with their sad lives and take it out on Carey Price?
Best blog I’ve read on the goalie situation I’ve read in a long time. It makes me crazy because people think that they are entitled to boo their own goalie.. as if that hasn’t been our downfall since Patrick and beyond.
It won’t be the WHOLE game. It’ll be bits and piece and you would want to throw your remote at the TV when they cut off to show some Football or Baseball highlights in the middle of a powerplay. But it’s better than nothing and keep your radio on.

I’m so tired of this Halak/Price Debate. Price could be a good goalie but he will not here. He might’ve somewhere else where he wasn’t mocked for every mistake.
The real problems with this franchise are poor drafting of first rounders (kostitsyn, Fischer, Chipchura), trading for Scott Gomez and his albatross contract, and the management refusing to sign/trade/draft/acquire players with size and grit.

I was fortunate enough to play at some customer outings in both MLG and the ACC. The former was the hottest rink I have ever skated in — I’m sure I dropped at least seven pounds in 90 minutes there — but it had so much more character than the latter. (Also, the post game brews were the best I have ever had!) There was nothing but beers on the line, but I look back fondly at getting a hatty at MLG wearing my white #10 Habs jersey.

Absolutely, I could not agree with you more. JT had an excellent piece on her blog today. The bottom line is that even if he turns out to be the talent Gainey drafted, why would he stay in MTL after he is unshackled? Even if he were to win two Cups in a row, who wants to have his nads busted like this? (My nightmare is that somehow he ends up on the Leafs and backstops them to a Cup.)

Watching that twine bulge on the first one was great! They asked us to rate ourselves beforehand based on our skills. As a guy who grew up in NYC and pretty much gave up competitive hockey after high school, I rated myself a “C,” thinking that these guys from TO would smoke me. Nothing could have been farther from the truth. I think that they were a tad concerned during the pregame meal that I knew so much about the ’72 series and the New Year’s Eve game. The kicker were the two knuckleheads on the opposing team that I snuck up behind, tapped my stick on the ice and politely asked for and received a drop pass. I had so much time on the first breakaway that I could have gotten a date, ordered cocktails, seen a movie and still scored. The second I went down on the kicker and decided to try a breakaway wrap-around. To this day, Toronto is my favorite city to play hockey!!!

CP ain’t that great. He is okay. It’s not about the hype; it’s about delivering the goods. First chance in the NHL playoff Halak got, the Habs went further than they’d been since ’93. Maybe if Halak had stunk out the joint, people wouldn’t think that the wrong goalie was traded away.
Who knows? Price could turn it around. My opinion says what we’ve been seeing with him is what you get. 1 good game. 2 not so good. 1 good game, 2….

Again, I agree with you. Personally, I think the weaknesses exposed in Halak’s game by Peter Laviolette (PL) during the Flyers series made him expendable. PL showed that he was not the savior that many, myself included, thought he was. [When we were matched up against the Flyers, I knew we were done. Not because of their players, but because of PL. That dude knows hockey and knows how to cop a Cup, end of story.]
The ill-mannered drunks booing Price for being the goalie in a playoff series that could not have been won deserved getting that shine on from Price. Prove how completely ignorant you are and classless by booing the US National Anthem and a goalie who could not have saved that series, no goalie could have. Using the 09 playoffs against Price just shows dislike of a goalie for foolish reasons while he was showing some emotion against drunken fools who poison the Bell Centre and the reputation of Montreal with their behaviour.

I believe the success of Uncle George’s brilliant marketing campaign during his tenure as owner has created a perfect storm of unrealistic expectations mixed with marketing hype.

I live in the suburbs of NYC. John Tortorella made an appearance at my sons’ summer camp to give a talk to the kids. One of my little guys went up to him and said my Dad wants me to thank you personally. Torts asked him what for? Eller is very impressive. Not saying he’s the next Foppa, but he plays a similar style to Peter Forsberg. Mayer is a quality goalie too. If he can wrestle away the starting job in the AHL from Curtis Sanford, he could be a backup in the NHL one day. I like his aggressiveness.
If Eller is half of Foppa, we’ll come out the winners in that trade. Canadiens didn’t move Desjardins because he was threatening Price, they needed to make room for a younger goalie with a higher upside in Mayer.

Agreed. Eller can get dirty and physical. Forsberg was such a powerful player. He wouldn’t shy away from contact.
