Plan the parade

Most gratifying aspect of the W:

Solid play by a lot of kids: Lars Eller, wee David Desharnaid, Ryan White, Robert Mayer, Max Pacioretty.

P.K. Subban was spectacular … maybe a tad too spectacular. But the Bell Centre loves him.

Plus a solid two-way effort from long-dormant AK46

Still out of left field, doesn’t make it untrue. Just commenting on how I was taken off guard by that one. Sucks because Avtsin was looking promising.

    No one has RIS! haha

Why can’t RDS view this man, this sucks. I was so happy leaving school today…thought I’d catch some Canadiens hockey tonight.

Is there such thing as a Habs TV? Leafs have a Leafs TV and it plays every single one of their games!

  7. petrov14 says:

All I can find is TORvsPHI and CHIvsDET, this sucks.

I think it was Martin McGuire. He’s close to the team and doesn’t trade in BS or rumours.

  17. andrewberkshire says:

That CKAC report sure came out of left field, everything else I’ve read says Avtsin has been very impressive in camp and his attitude is fine.

I have to admit i’m a little concerned about the ckac report on avtsin. Not if he isn’t ready for hamilton, but more about if he is showing some attitude about maybe having to play in the Q.

  26. Shiloh says:

Is there a web link for tonight’s game?

  27. New says:

You know…Chris Boyle writing on Robert’s  Eyeontheprize (thanks Boone) may be on to something. Actors have stage names. Why can’t Price  play under the name Boule (silent e)? What are the fanatics going to yell then? Price?

  28. Rugger says:

So ESPN thinks the Habs will suck this year.  I’m okay with that since they know nothing about Hockey. They have Auld at 7 wins so Habs are at 72 points plus OT losses.

  29. GrimJim says:

Speaking of “you think Mtl fans are tough…” Peter Maher the Calg play-by-play guy said on the radio today that when Mike Vernon was the Flames goalie he was regularly and consistently jeered by fans because he was a Calgary native “with a real swagger” and the other homeboys thought he had got too big for his britches when he turned pro. BUT not only would they jeer Vernon but they would jeer and catcall Vernon’s parents sitting in the stands so much that the parents stopped going to Vernon’s games.

  30. aemarchand11 says:

Shultz is playing tonight.. RDS had an interview with him, hes very excited. Avstin will not play, but he is not injured I think they want to play him with Pleks and Cammalleri maybe??

  31. Chuck says:

Kind of puts things into perspective, doesn’t it?

  32. Fant-HAB-ulous says:

Martin McGuire’s piece, while probably accurate, actually means nothing. So if Carey hates it here, he can go. It’s not like there are a shortage of NHL caliber goalies that aren’t available.

It would be sad, but if it’s what’s best for Carey then so be it. Like all jobs and all people, he is a replaceable asset (albeit not with anyone currently in our system).

  33. HFX-HabFan says:

Looking forward to seeing the EGG line in action, and hopefully watching Ryan White play with plenty of jam!

  34. Richrebellion says:

Love the article by chris boyle and finally im starting to see a turn in the media! Rational thinking and people wanting to stand against the idiots who boo their own team! Fans wonder why no one wants to play here and why management can’t  get any superstars here. Well take a look in the mirror because its you, you’re the reason. Now wake up realize you are hurting the organization in which you claim to love. I hear boone and people say its your right to boo since you pay so much to see a game at the bell and it is. However, as a fan (if you are actually fans) you have no right to boo and by doing so you demonstrate the exact opposite. So decide now, are you fans of les habitants? or just pessimists who are depressed with their sad lives and take it out on Carey Price?

  35. Mats Naslund says:

Best blog I’ve read on the goalie situation I’ve read in a long time. It makes me crazy because people think that they are entitled to boo their own goalie.. as if that hasn’t been our downfall since Patrick and beyond.

  36. Harani says:

It won’t be the WHOLE game. It’ll be bits and piece and you would want to throw your remote at the TV when they cut off to show some Football or Baseball highlights in the middle of a powerplay. But it’s better than nothing and keep your radio on.

    “It must be love!”

  37. Harani says:

Another good one from Down Goes Brown on the Fantasy pools.

“Be aware of your league’s roster rules and the potential consequences of not following them. For example, failing to have two NHL goaltenders on your roster can result in invalid lineups, forfeited matchups, and a front office job offer from the Flyers.

  38. CBrady12 says:

    NHL on the fly

  39. The M says:

That was well worth the read.  Canadiens fans are completely ignorant when it comes to goaltending, and as a result another potential star will be ruined.

I’m so tired of this Halak/Price Debate.  Price could be a good goalie but he will not here.  He might’ve somewhere else where he wasn’t mocked for every mistake.

The real problems with this franchise are poor drafting of first rounders (kostitsyn, Fischer, Chipchura), trading for Scott Gomez and his albatross contract, and the management refusing to sign/trade/draft/acquire players with size and grit.

  40. danedmunds says:

  41. CBrady12 says:

Going to the game tonight…getting the pipes warmed up already…is it boo or boourns?

  42. yathehabsrule says:

Well worth the read. from Chris Boyle

“Perfection is the only thing that will stop the irrational hatred. If
Price can come to terms with never being able to satisfy the impossible
expectation of perfection placed on him, then he will be fine. Halak has
been deified regardless of future success with the Blues, it is a ghost
that can only be vanquished by starting a long playoff march of his
    own.”

  83. Yeats says:

I was fortunate enough to play at some customer outings in both MLG and the ACC. The former was the hottest rink I have ever skated in — I’m sure I dropped at least seven pounds in 90 minutes there — but it had so much more character than the latter. (Also, the post game brews were the best I have ever had!) There was nothing but beers on the line, but I look back fondly at getting a hatty at MLG wearing my white #10 Habs jersey.

  84. Chuck says:

Sweet! That must’ve been grand. Hab jersey’s celebrating goals on MLG ice… nothing better.

  85. Yeats says:

Absolutely, I could not agree with you more. JT had an excellent piece on her blog today. The bottom line is that even if he turns out to be the talent Gainey drafted, why would he stay in MTL after he is unshackled? Even if he were to win two Cups in a row, who wants to have his nads busted like this? (My nightmare is that somehow he ends up on the Leafs and backstops them to a Cup.)

  86. Propwash says:

Oh Christ, if that ever happened…………armageddon man, armageddon.

Goalies in Montreal have two roles, netminder and scapegoat.

  87. Yeats says:

Watching that twine bulge on the first one was great! They asked us to rate ourselves beforehand based on our skills. As a guy who grew up in NYC and pretty much gave up competitive hockey after high school, I rated myself a “C,” thinking that these guys from TO would smoke me. Nothing could have been farther from the truth. I think that they were a tad concerned during the pregame meal that I knew so much about the ’72 series and the New Year’s Eve game. The kicker were the two knuckleheads on the opposing team that I snuck up behind, tapped my stick on the ice and politely asked for and received a drop pass. I had so much time on the first breakaway that I could have gotten a date, ordered cocktails, seen a movie and still scored. The second I went down on the kicker and decided to try a breakaway wrap-around. To this day, Toronto is my favorite city to play hockey!!!

  88. Yeats says:

Unless I misread it, that was essentially the gist of her post.

  89. RiverviewCanadien says:

    That was a good read

  90. Chuck says:

Adam, observer, Shiloh, and the rest of that bunch would never hear the end of it.  :)

  91. RiverviewCanadien says:

And if Price sh_ts the bed you will never hear the end of it from them

  92. G-Man says:

Maybe if he didn’t pull that Patrick Roy shrug when losing a playoff game people would be more on his side. Maybe if he stopped glaring at his D and stopped the puck more often. Maybe if he battled more instead of relying on that shrunken on your knees goalie technique.

CP ain’t that great. He is okay. It’s not about the hype; it’s about delivering the goods. First chance in the NHL playoff Halak got, the Habs went further than they’d been since ’93. Maybe if Halak had stunk out the joint, people wouldn’t think that the wrong goalie was traded away.

Who knows? Price could turn it around. My opinion says what we’ve been seeing with him is what you get. 1 good game. 2 not so good. 1 good  game, 2….

  93. Shiloh says:

Well said – but the Price-a-holics will not stand for reason.

  94. Yeats says:

Again, I agree with you. Personally, I think the weaknesses exposed in Halak’s game by Peter Laviolette (PL) during the Flyers series made him expendable. PL showed that he was not the savior that many, myself included, thought he was. [When we were matched up against the Flyers, I knew we were done. Not because of their players, but because of PL. That dude knows hockey and knows how to cop a Cup, end of story.]

  95. SeriousFan09 says:

The ill-mannered drunks booing Price for being the goalie in a playoff series that could not have been won deserved getting that shine on from Price. Prove how completely ignorant you are and classless by booing the US National Anthem and a goalie who could not have saved that series, no goalie could have. Using the 09 playoffs against Price just shows dislike of a goalie for foolish reasons while he was showing some emotion against drunken fools who poison the Bell Centre and the reputation of Montreal with their behaviour.

    - I shall always remember Captain Koivu.
    http://habsandhockey.blogspot.com/

  96. Chuck says:

Hey… Price has to deliver, or the Habs move on to someone who will. There’s no disputing that. And if it comes to that, then may the changes be made, because first and foremost I want this team to win. I’m still putting my money on Price being in nets when that happens, though. He’s already proven that he can do it in the NHL, so I wouldn’t bet against him doing it again.

  97. habs fan from stonyplain says:

that is bang on if he is not playing like dryden then they boo, I have said this many times Jaro is this generations Steve Penny, I hope the drunks don’t run Carey out of town.

  98. RiverviewCanadien says:

Price has to deliver, or the Habs move on to someone who will. There’s no disputing that. And if it comes to that, then may the changes be made, because first and foremost I want this team to win. I’m still putting my money on Price being in nets when that happens, though

Well it’s pretty easy to put your money on Price over Auld or Sanford…anyone would make THAT call Capt. Obvious…

  99. Chuck says:

My point was that I’m confident that we’ll be winning with Price in goal, not that Auld or Sanford would (or wouldn’t) be the long-term solution if Price didn’t work out.

  100. Yeats says:

Poor Price, he can’t even catch a break in preseason. What if they decided to start him tonight?

Fans that boo or give standing ovations at preseason games need an alternative outlet. The Impact’s entry into MLS can not happen quickly enough.

  101. Xtrahabsfan says:

So there you have it ….The Fans of Les Canadiens CHEERING LOUDLY AT GAMES END because the boys played good and didn’t give up EASY GOALS AT THE BEGINING OF THE GAME! That’s all they want …a Real goaltender and a good effort! GREAT FANS expect great effort! GO HABS GO!

  102. Habstilidie says:

Great piece by Bruce Arthur, fantastic read!

  103. SeriousFan09 says:

Could you load the buses full of those fans and send them down to West Point, NY on Sunday morning at 7:00am? I could really use the boost that can be provided by those who go mental over a pickup game!

  105. RiverviewCanadien says:

  109. Exit716 says:

I believe the success of Uncle George’s brilliant marketing campaign during his tenure as owner has created a perfect storm of unrealistic expectations mixed with marketing hype.

It didn’t help that Price was being unfairly compared to Dryden and Roy before he even started one game in the NHL.

I think fans and the marketing department really need to heed Dryden’s brilliant words at the 100th anniversary game, that it’s time for this team to create it’s own legacy. Fans need to understand that the good old days aren’t coming back.

  110. Chuck says:

The arena that they played in last night is a great old building. Sure beats that arena of sterility that they call the ACC.

  111. sidhu says:

Boone, we’re having a hard enough time spelling 51′s name, now you give us TGTGF?? j/k

I agree, Schultz and Avtsin would have been great to see, especially given the buzz they generated from the scrimmages.

If Alex Bald doesn’t play well, maybe PG will call Stan Bowman about Cristo-wall Huet!

  112. Chuck says:

I can safely predict that Lars Eller will score more goals this season than will Jaro Halak. Thus, we win that trade hands-down.  :)

  113. RiverviewCanadien says:

One way to put a positive spin on it…

  114. SeriousFan09 says:

Auld and Mayer are in nets tonight, or as you might know them “the inadequate backup dude” and “the guy who conspired with PG, JM and Carey to send Desjardins out of town so he could take his job”

Eller is very impressive. Not saying he’s the next Foppa, but he plays a similar style to Peter Forsberg. Mayer is a quality goalie too. If he can wrestle away the starting job in the AHL from Curtis Sanford, he could be a backup in the NHL one day. I like his aggressiveness.

  282. SeriousFan09 says:

If Eller is half of Foppa, we’ll come out the winners in that trade. Canadiens didn’t move Desjardins because he was threatening Price, they needed to make room for a younger goalie with a higher upside in Mayer.
