More than a 1-0 series deficit

If Andrei Markov is out – and he left the rink on crutches – well …

In seven games, the Caps scored one power-play goal.

Pittsburgh had four in 34 minutes

  1. B says:

How are you correct that they matched up better against Washington than those other teams? While they played well against Washington, they did not play a series against any of those others yet to prove how they would have done against them. With the way they played in round one, perhaps they could have beat some of those other teams too, maybe even in less than 7 games? Hard to really say for sure. I agree with your other comments. It is certainly all fun and gravy at this point.

  2. B says:

Metropolit had 5 shifts the last game and only 9 shifts in each of the games before that. Does he really need to be rested or to be singled out for questioning on the freshness of his legs?

  3. B says:

Is there concern of fatigue with the goalies for the other teams advancing in the playoffs? The remaining goalies played the whole 1st series for their teams except for Luongo who was relieved by Raycroft for 24:38. Boucher is the only one of them with less TOI than Halak (since Philly only played 5 games). I don’t read or hear folks questioning fatigue for those other goalies. Is Halak that frail?

  4. kempie says:

Every team feels the same way about Lee. Same as it was with Fraser. The guy is just a mess and you never know which way it’s gonna go. Although Lee has been pretty bad towards us this year so maybe it’s time the other team gets jobbed.

  5. BeachHabFan says:

chris F lee, bob F cole, and matt F cooke. should be a pretty interesting friday night

had habs in 6 last round because A) i was overjoyed and didn’t care how they really did so i thought the positive karma couldn’t hurt, B) i didn’t put any real money down anyway, and C) i honestly thought they could give ovie and his pals a lot of trouble like they did in the regular season.

plus ca change, plus c’est la meme chose

Habs in 6 because A) i am once again overjoyed and don’t care how they do, so the positive karma can’t hurt, B) i can’t afford to put any real money down anyway, and C) i honestly think they could give sid and his pals a lot of trouble like they did the last 2 times they played regular season. Pens won 3rd game on a weak, deflating and far too long over-the-shoulder shot on price that came after hordes of habs had kept pressure on pens for 30min. Mtl won 4th game with “authoritah”. Pens were good vs OTT and sid put on a show but i’ll take gio, gomer, gill and moen’s experience over spezz, alfredson, and chris neil any day.

big factor to me will be escaping the zone without too many giveaways; knocking guys down or off halak like they did vs WAS, because you know there’s going to be some serious crease crowding/running/pileups going on; and of course, bring lots of ice, because pens will dump and chase and drive the D into the boards more in the first game then the caps did all series with their cross-the-blue-line-and-shoot routine.

    take it to em, boys!

  6. projectpete19 says:

they disallowed one of ours in the same game so they made it even

  7. topher5468 says:

IMO, He played well in the beginning of the series but his play saged as the series wore on, he wasnt very good in game 7, to me, he looked slugish, failed to clear the zone numerous times when he had the chance and over stickhandled instead on getting the puck deep. He also keeps shooting high, hes got a great shot but most times he misses the net. Theres no doubt we need him to have a good series.

  9. Ian Cobb says:

Before the play offs started, I thought we matched up better against Washington than Pitts, Buff, or NJ. It happens that I was correct but I am not as sure that we can match the depth of the Pens.

Washington is a one dimensional squad, but the Pens are a more rounded hockey club. The challenge is more difficult for sure. But it can be done!

At any rate, any success that we might have going forward is pure gravy, enjoy the ride boys and girls. We have not had as much fun in many years.

  10. Shiloh says:

A point a game – never missed a shift – a few hits – a few blocked shots(!!) – skated as well in Game 7 as Game 1. It’s not funny, just true. Try to focus a little more on what you’re watching.

  11. Kingofswing74 says:

i could care less if the habs get ousted in 4. no one expected the habs to be here, a good long series would be great, a win would be historic and unbelievable. and all a loss means is that a team that worked its ass off got beat 4 times by the defending champs. no shame in that. ovie doesnt have what it takes. sid the kid gets what he wants, he makes it happen.

  12. CBrady12 says:

A  pivotal goal in a game 7 was waved off in the habs favour and people STILL complain about the refs BEFORE the game has started. I would love to see the Canadiens record when Lee is working the game because I bet it’s not as bad as everyone thinks. Lets face it, the habs have had their fair share of calls go their way in the last 100 years. IMO anyone who whines about the NHL conspiring against the Canadiens need help.

  13. Price_31 says:

I called Habs in 7 vs WSH. Now Habs in 7 vs PIT. Good Luck, Boys!

  14. B says:

Pittsburgh won the cup last year and went to the finals the year before that. So, yes, it is fair to say they are a better playoff team than Washington.

  15. CBrady12 says:

lol ur joking right?  haha good one

  16. Hockey Socks says:

I called Washington in 5 too, this time I’m calling Pittsburgh in 4.

  17. CBrady12 says:

How can anyone complain about the ‘conspiracy’ against the habs after the disallowed goal in game 7….common be realistic

  18. likehoy says:

bettman must be scared for his little sidney so he’s putting chris lee on reffing duty tonight to ensure we don’t get the victory.

  19. WAR72 says:

from what im reading in the media, it means absolutely nothing that washington was a better team than the pens all year. somehow the pens are a bigger challenge than the caps. dont get me wrong, i agree than pitt is a great team, and are the cup champs, but washington was a super fav to win it all. that means they were favs over pitt. so why is it that the pens are all of a sudden better than the caps? i guess the regular season does indeed mean zipperella. get in the playoffs and you can win it all, i hear it all the time. the media switches its opinions as it sees fit. flipflopppers like politicians. this little rant has let me release some nervous energy, thank you.

    go habs go.

  20. StevieRay says:

Pumped for tonite … I’d like to see AK be a little more consistant in the offensive zone .. not to take away from his hat trick .. but he could be a force if he really wanted it ! the dude’s a  moose !

  22. Chorske says:

Whoah, check out the table in the link Boone posted. As the season progresses, Crosby’s +- drops steadily from +3 to -2, and his shot total collapses from 9 to ZERO.

Seems like we can contain him, no? I’d refer to myself as cautiously optimistic, but that handle’s been taken. :)

  23. Will Longlade says:

    The fix is in!

  24. Will Longlade says:

My thoughts on the series with the Caps:

    1. Halak was simply phenomenal & a bit lucky when he needed to be.

    2. Ovie was well contained by Gill, Gorges & Spacek. Anyone think Bob signing Gill was a bad move now?.

    3. Backstrom was MIA since getting creamed by OB. OB should have started the series. To JM’s credit, he made the necessary adjustments on D, but I wonder if his decision to insert OB in the lineup may have been different if Spacek was good to go.

    4. Laps starting to bring it ever night.

    5. Signing Moore was a great move. Gauthier is a very astute hockey man. The team is in excellent hands heading into a busy summer when lots of decisions will have to be made.

    6. Gionta & Gomez excellent on the PK and defensively. Their offensive contributions were impeccably timed.

    7. Cammy? What a pure sniper this guy is. Reminds me of the Rocket.

    8. Calling up PK to bolster the D was a smart and gutsy move. To all the doubters out there, you’ll never get anywhere without making some bold decisions. Be bold!

    9. The non-interference call in game 2 came back to haunt the Caps. What goes around……

Hey Mike, what’s the storey on Pleks? I noticed that he was being used sparingly by JM in the last 3 games or maybe I just didn’t notice him. He wasn’t very involved. Conscious decision or undisclosed injury?

I don’t want to play any of the remaining teams because I don’t think we match up well against them.  But, for some reason, I believe in magic and can’t wait to see how it unfolds.  GO HABS GO!

  35. Big Ted says:

Very upset that the NHL would let Chris Lee anywhere near another Habs game, much less the opening game of a series between us and the Pens, the very team against which he screwed us right out of an obvious goal by changing his mind after the whistle. If the NHL insists on keeping him around for round 2, he should be reffing the Boston-Philly series, where there will be plenty of dirty plays to call penalties on.

If the series gets past game 5 in Pittsburgh, we are in business.

I don’t see the habs losing game 6 at home – and picking “pencils” in 6, well that’s just too ugly for me to accept.

If Pitt wins its in 5 or 7.

if habs win its in 6.

    HABS IN FREAKIN 6!!!!!!!!!

now that I have calmed down a bit. here is my thought for this series.

everyone who lives between Cornwall and the Saguenay thinks Markov is a world class d-man.

if the pundits are wondering why Markov has never been nominated for a Snorris trophy at the end of this series,

and we are worried about how we will afford paying him his next contract at the end of this series,

and one other thing – thanks Boone for this “Jordan Staal is the best third-line centre in the league”.

I agree. I wouldn’t mind seeing Staal in a Habs uniform!!

  39. Shiloh says:

He must have really pissed off JM! It isn’t as if he’s any worse defensively than MAB…

  40. forskis says:

For those wondering about Halak’s fatigue, when he took over this season, he could go 4-6 games playing great and then stink for a game or two…at that point he needed one game off to either re-focus or get angry again for not playing.  That happened in Game #2 and #3 of the Caps series…if he looks shaky for Games #3 or #4 in a loss, Price should get the next game for Halak to re-focus and/or re-anger.

The Pens play a different game…the Habs may be scrambling more in their zone but at least the shot counts will be less lopsided since the Pens play less run-and-gun.

By the way…does anyone know if CBC still broadcasts HNIC on the radio?  If so, what frequency?

“I am guilty of using elipses…”

  41. Krang7 says:

Renewing the old Lapierre-Crosby rivalry going back to their Q days… I wonder if Lappy can possibly get into Sid’s head like he used to. Somehow I doubt it.

  42. punkster says:

Mike Boone, hockey expert and ladies man. No…wait.

  43. goalieguy says:

In my experience, momentum is as powerful a force as fatigue.  If the guys keep playing tough and nasty in front, and make sure Jaro doesn’t get abused, and gets a look at the puck, he will keep feeling it and keep rolling.

I am more worried about fatigue with the D. Because if the Pens can assert themselves in the slot, bump Jaro and create screens and scrambles, then we’re in trouble.  If Pittsbugh pops a couple of quick ones, and Jaro loses his momentum THAT’s when fatigue becomes a factor. It’s the emotional let down that comes from a couple of goals against that really start to make you feel worn down.

So, Gill, Georges, O’Byrne, Markov…don’t lose that nasty edge!

  44. Mike Boone says:

Jacques Martin will put a very tender part of his anatomy into a Cuisinart before he inserts SK74 anywhere but the pressbox.

  45. Shiloh says:

I wonder if JM will rest Metro and insert SK74 back into the lineup. We could use some fresh legs. I have no idea what is going to happen. Unlike Washington, where I thought we’d have to steal a couple of games, I think the healthy Habs can skate with these guys. I would not be shocked to see either team win in 5, 6 or 7 games.

  50. JasonM says:

Boone, how is that a perfectly legal hit? Markov didn’t have the puck anymore and Cooke came at him sideways without any indication he was going to slow down. Markov turned to face Cooke and put up his arms a second too late. Cooke consequently ran away from the music thereafters, skated away from Gomez! GOMEZ! Of all people.

    He’s a gutless puke.

Prediction: SK74 is back for Game 2.

  72. Tis Himself says:

Why doesn’t someone just snap a puck at Cooke’s face? It’s incidental to the game and will do far more damage than a punch ever will. Just wait for the chance and boom. Instant cosmetic surgey candidate!

  73. Matt_in_TO says:

  74. Clay4bc says:

Markov has a history of back troubles, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see that the back is the problem now. All may not be lost though – Spacek should be ready for next game at least, and that’s a pretty decent “call-up” to have.

Pitts is playing good playoff hockey though. They know what it takes to win the cup, and are doing it to perfection – finishing checks, forcing the play, taking away time and space. We need to elevate our game. I wonder if they are feeling a little let-down after the emotional game 7 win…?

  75. ManApart says:

Not too good. Barely any offensive presence. Pitts PP, really prepared for Mtl’s PK. Already more goals than Caps had in 7 games. Not a lot of jump. It doesn’t look good for Markov. Looks like we’ll be seeing a lot more of MAB and PK. One thing is good, one is very bad.

  76. Danno says:

A hard slapshot from MAB would give him a nice nose job.

  79. habsoul says:

Habs are in deep trouble if Markov is out for any time. Pens will simply devour MAB.

  84. ManApart says:

Pittsburgh was very well prepared for the Habs. See the net presence in front of Halak. Cooke’s hit was pretty innocent. Terrible luck…………Is Cherry calling Halak, Havlat?

  85. BrianSkrudland says:

Nothing wrong with the Cooke hit in my mind, folks. It is time to be subjective about that hit.

It would suck to lose Markov, but I saw nothing illegal there.

  86. crabvader says:

Calling Gomez on a roughing penalty after Markov got injured was pure bs.

Should’ve been coincidentals cause Gomez wasn’t the only one doing the roughing.

  130. Keith says:

That should NOT have happened! AK46 blew that one BIGTIME!

  131. Will Longlade says:

Markov is probably gone for the series, if not the playoffs. Although he’s among the top five D in the league, he’s injury prone and durability is an issue.

I’d start Price on Sunday and give Halak a rest.

Gainey is at these games for a reason. The Habs are getting primed to do some deals this summer and Sequin is the prize.

  148. HFX-HabFan says:

My thoughts exactly.  I hate to get down on guys but both those plays are just stupid.  Get the puck in deep, especially in the second when you have the longer change.

  149. habitual says:

    Mes ami,

With Marky seemingly gone and Spacek still out (does anyone know how much longer) … yikes!

Still, positives include sparkling goaltending for next year (both our lads!).  O’Byrne is playing like we only hoped for, Moore (oh please let’s sign him), Pyatt a good 4th liner, the resurgence of Lappy, heroic work by Gill, Georges, and – yes Hammer, and can’t you just wait to see PK’s level of play by the end of next year.

On the downside, AK is a waste of skin.  Two goals were the result of unpressured dump ins that went awry.  Is there an easier play in hockey than shooting the puck into the corner?  Guess we’ll save some cap space by waving the two Kostitsyn boys goodbye.

We ain’t done but can’t you feel the upside to this team going forward into next year?

  150. Habsfan_jay says:

  167. danp says:

I agree with most of what you say. Halak had to be tired and he deserves a rest. The Penguins are not magical. The Habs can play as a team and they can win this series – even without Markov.

Engblom (I had to look it up) is more fair than most. Jones isn’t too bad – most of the time. The play by play on Versus was heavily tilted toward the Penguins IMO.

The schedule is the schedule – granted. Some of the on-ice bias isn’t so clear cut.

  168. zozotheclown says:

Big differrence between Wsh and Pits is that Pits don’t shoot from everywhere. They wait for good or perfect chances then take the shot. I’m sure all goalies including Jaro hate that, much easier getting in the game when you get many and not all perfect shots.

  169. ManApart says:

Look, I think many of us thought this would happen. Everyone on the Habs had an extreme game 7 hangover. If they win Sunday, they are actually in the driver’s seat. The only terrible news is that it looks like Markov is gone for the series. wich is actually catastropic news.

  174. BrianSkrudland says:

Lapierre really was active tonight, wasn’t he? Not necessarily productive, but he had a good jump to his step.

Heading into tonight’s game I was hoping that AK would deliver his A-game. He made one great play in the first period; backchecking to pick-off a feed from Crosby to an open Pens player in front of the net. I thought, wow, he’s brining it tonight. That was a short-lived sentiment.

  175. Chuck Chuck Goose says:

Even though I’m not blaming Halak for anything, I’d be totally fine with Price coming in for the third – Habs can still get back in it so it’s not a complete throwaway just yet, and it gives Jaro an incredibly well-deserved rest (if only for 20 minutes).
Maybe some time on the bench will give him a different vantage point of how the Pens offense works (especially on the PP) so he can take notes for Sunday

  176. JasonM says:

See you in game 2. Perhaps things won’t be so much in the Pens favor.

Don’t cross your fingers to see Cooke suspended. If that same hit would have been on Crosby though….

  177. showey47 says:

    damn that game 2 meltdown.

Hell yes.  We just beat the number 1 team. This game was always going to be a throw away.  What did you expect?  We were going to blow the Pens away after being brutally outshot by the Caps in our last three games and playing a grueling seven game series?

  182. TorontoHabsFan says:

Bet Penguins wouldn’t if they had just finished an epic Seven Game Series and were without Crosby.

    (my god, you’re tiresome)

  183. SeriousFan09 says:

    1st star: Henri Richard
    2nd Star: Doug Harvey
    3rd Star: Jacques Plante

Final score Detroit Red Wings 5 Montreal Canadiens 3″

  190. HardHabits says:

Still more hockey to be played. Halak wasn’t sharp and might need to sit another game. Well rested he can play lights out. Tired he’s average. I am almost tempted to see Price start next game. Win or lose I’d go back to Halak in game 3.

  191. longtimehabsfan says:

Weird game.  Pens strategy to come out hitting worked and we’re off our game.  No Markov is a killer.  Time to get back to basics.  Need more structure in our own end.  4-2 with 3 PP goals for the Pens.

  192. andrewberkshire says:

So Halak was great tonight? Ok, next time Price lets in 25% of his shots against and can’t track pucks at all I’ll remember that you thought he was great.

  193. andrewberkshire says:

Not implying we’re in this hole because of Halak, but a save would be nice. You can’t say he’s been good tonight. His puck tracking has been atrocious.

  197. SeriousFan09 says:

Hey, count me thrilled that Subban is the best defencemen on the ice in the PIT-MTL series so far but he’s this good right now because of a solid year in Hamilton under a fantastic development coach. I always get excited when I see our rookies come up big, but then I think about how long it will last. Pouliot was our 40-goal scorer for next season in January right now? um…

Enjoy it now, but let’s not pretend this isn’t a kind of familiar script for us.

    - I shall always remember Captain Koivu.

It’s alright guys!  We’ll come back with a better effort on sunday.

    But WOOW!!

Subban is one hell of a good player.  great vision!!  And his defensive abilities don’t actually worry me too much!

IMO he was our best player tonight.  Can’t wait to see this guy in a full NHL season!

  218. andrewberkshire says:

Not blaming, read my reply to Clay.

  219. zozotheclown says:

My main concern at this point is that, if we attribute todays shortcomings to fatigue, is there any reason to think we’ll be rested for next game? I think we’ll be even more tired, which sucks. Thats why I’m thinking give Jaro his rest and hope Price can steal a game. Worst case, we get a fully rested Jaro back in Montreal down 2 games, a position we’ve been through. Our chances might be slightly better with him sunday, but I don’t think an extra period of rest does anything to help Halak’s fatigue after a long series. So for the best series outcome, I think fully resting Halak might be our best option.

We can definitely play with these guys, we just need a better PK and maybe a couple showstopping saves like against Wsh, if this series had started saturday, I think we really could have one that game.

  220. punkster says:

Unless AK pulls a hatty out of his butt in the 3rd he should be press boxed for the remainder of the series. I’ve heard enough excuses from the HI/O membership for this kid. He may have “potential” but he has no here and now.

Sorry to dump on anyone who supports AK but I’ve been tired of his schtick since the regular season. On again, off again doesn’t cut it in the playoffs.

  221. Danno says:

    AK & SK?

“Hey Richard, two minutes for looking so good!”

  222. Clay4bc says:

  227. Harani says:

If the PK were even 25%, we would be heading to OT. Today’s loss was prolly a awakener. Work on the PK and Fleury looks VERY beatable. Still say Habs in 6.

    “I gotta feeling…that tonight’s gonna be a good night!”

  228. showey47 says:

  229. andrewberkshire says:

This is random, but I counted 4 times in this game that a Penguins player grabbed the puck and threw it up the ice. That’s supposed to be against the rules. You can bat it, but they keep on gloving it, changing direction and throwing it.

  230. The Teacher says:

Andrei is pissing me off, always avoids using his body. Does he not know he is a hockey player? I’ve seen more contact from a soccer player than I have from AK.

any of the pro-CBC posters still happy they have the rights to Habs games for this round?

  238. gohabzzzz says:

hey, here is something psitive you can do when your sick of hearing benoit when the habs are winning or losing:

mute the tv and put music. it’s actually pretty funny when your at a dramatic part of the music and then something dramatic happens on the ice. it makes a loss better. yeah.

Tis never a dull game with the habs… :)

  239. Mr. Biter says:

Earlier today I posted CP would be back in net (did not it would be tonight but) and the reasons why. Not to fault Halak and our PK who won the  series against the caps (and not to jump on Halak I still believe, to appease the Halak zealots). Halak played unbelievable vs. Caps but he should have been pulled after the 3rd goal or after the 1st. period. Watch the replays if you don’t believe me. 3rd. goal his sholders hunched ,he knew he was done and for one of the few times this year I disagree with JM and Halak should have been gone. If any Halak fans want to call me out feel free but he was done for the night  after the 3rd. goal. It was not his night tonight. Plain and simple. He gave his all vs. the Caps and stopped 131 out out of 134 shots (numbers may be a bit off) and the PK allowed 1 goal in 34 chances?

Unfortunately in most sports %’s play a role and both of the above were way out of whack (also I doubt very much the Pens will score on 4of 4 PP’s again in this series again %’s)

Jaro was Mentally and Physically tired and as Brian Engblum (hey i spell bad without spell check) an ex Hab now working for Versus (does any think I would watch CBC to listen to those Toronto clowns bash the Habs when I have an option) The announcers there are way more professional and less bias than those goofs in Toronto. They even went as far BEFORE THE GAME to say what I posted above about Halak playing bad when physically and mentally drained and that CP should have started.. My thoughts went Immediately to HIO website which would have have been down for days with all the CP,JM and BG haters venting their hate to the above mentioned people.

Guy and Gals CP should start next game or JM has a verry verry verry tight line on Halak. This is professional sports. What you did yesterday doesn’t matter what you do today counts. Hey if CP starts and loses (if he wins he keeps playing) and Halak comes back (after a well needed rest) and wins the next 4 games I will be extatic and I still believe in him.

The end result is winning and that is what we want and I don’t give a rat’s ass who plays goal as long as they win. Again “what have you done for me today”. May be crude but it’s the real world and in sports the road is littered with players who had great years or part of good years and are traded or relaesed at the end of that season or the next year. That’s why they earn the big bucks but also why some careers end with a resounding crash.

Also not to defend Bettman unless he has ESP there was no knowing we were going to play today. The schedule was up at the start of the playoffs and winning early and getting a few extra days rest went to the Pens. Same thing would have happened if the Caps had played tonight. There would have been no extra day of rest for them.

In the end GO HABS GO in 6 games whoever plays net. Remember we out scored them in 5on5. They scored 40 more goals then we did but also allowed 20 more. With good goaltending from either or both of our goalies we can win this series.

Do you know how long it took to type this?

  240. Larry says:

On a days rest, physically and emotionally drained after that series this was not a bad outing. The PK was a bust tonight but otherwise we were not dominated and played hard to the end. I feel ok with what I saw. I did not expect a win tonight. The loss of Markov will be devastating if he is indeed gone though.

  241. HardHabits says:

You seem to be forgetting MAB.

  242. HardHabits says:

    Did Cherry call him Havlak?

  243. ooder says:

ya because Benny is really bringing it tonight *rolls eyes*

“I like what I’m seeing right now,” assessed Markov. “We’re not perfect, but we’re trying to be.”

And to think I kept the same draws on for 2 days for that. Oh well I know the boys will be there on Sunday, despite Bettman and this assinine series scheduling

  245. Harani says:

P.S. PK (Subban) is gonna be a superstar! He’s a joy to watch. Really feel bad for Markov, the guy has no luck. And if the hit on Markov was clean, Matt Cooke is still a POS.

  249. itpf says:

well… there’s a good chance we lost markov. BUT we have PK at least – although i don’t know how much he’ll help on the PK – at least he’s there on the PP.

  250. SeriousFan09 says:

    4 straight actually.

    - I shall always remember Captain Koivu.

  251. punkster says:

The team didn’t give up in spite of being outplayed by the Pens PP.

The CBC says if Markov is gone that Montreal doesn’t have the depth to recover. I don’t agree with that view any more. He’s a key element, sure,  but we have some pretty good D showing up these days and Spacek should be back soon. They’ll get used to the odd pairings and settle down by Sunday.

They need rest and Halak in particular. No use pointing fingers at anyone.

  252. Larry says:

Price played well against the Pens this year. That might not be a bad idea to give Jaro a rest and see what Carey can do.

  253. HardHabits says:

    The legal steal.

  254. TheMock780 says:

If Martin has his way, the Kostitsyn bros. will not be back next season. If the Habs fans have their way Hamrlik will get a one way ticket out of town as soon as the playoffs are over.

  255. andrewberkshire says:

If on again off again doesn’t cut it in the playoffs, why is Bergeron still playing? That last goal was WAY more on him than it was AK as he was completely out of position and got in Subban’s way. -9 now for Bergeron.

  256. Dru says:

They looked burnt out from game 7. But I’m holding out for a good third period… and game 2.

  257. HardHabits says:

  267. The Kid says:

This coming from the guy who Sh!ts on “his” team every opportunity he gets?

  268. SeriousFan09 says:

  269. twilighthours says:

To be honest with you I don’t find it horrible.  CBC has been much worse than it is tonight.

  271. The Teacher says:

  272. BrianSkrudland says:

I am eagerly awaiting Ian Cobb’s report that he knows PK personally and thinks that Young Subban is a fine character.

  273. Norm0770 says:

    Habs looked worn out tonight.

The phrarse that I heard over and over tonight on Verses was “Markov injured on a clean hit by Cooke”.  I don’t think that Cooke is even capable of a clean hit.

  274. SeriousFan09 says:

You always get in trouble for suggesting the goaltenders are human. Which they are and they do wear down. NHL scheduling us with 1 day of rest after 3 impossible performances by Halak was ridiculous.

  275. Keith says:

Chesterfield Cherry actually said some great things about PK Subban. I hope he plays 20 years for the Habs. He looks great back there.

  276. Puck Bard says:

  277. Harani says:

I want to cry! Where is everybody? :(

But my instinct tells me the Habs will get this one to OT. Too much character to quit.

    “I gotta feeling…that tonight’s gonna be a good night!”

  278. HABSsince92 says:

I totally agree. in fact I would have put Price in earlier tonight, maybe even have started him….flame away but there was no way Montreal was going to win tonights game after playing Wednesday. Quick question can anybody name the last time a team won a 7 games series and then win game 1 of the next round with 1 day off?

  279. Rob says:

i agree they’ve been worse.  I disagree it hasnt’ been horrible. but then that’s just my opinion.

  280. TripleX says:

Friedman mentioned a high ankle sprain.  If that is true then Markov is gone for the playoffs.  Man the dude has the worst luck with injuries.

Does this mean PK is an emergency callup and we can bring up White?

  281. coachdoug says:

Deep down Sid wants to wear the CH…it will happen…Love to see him wear the bleu, blanc et rouge…When is the question?

“Save us Turtleneck Man…We need you now more than ever!”

  282. punkster says:

I live 5 blocks away from the Oratory. Walk up around there every day. I’ll definitely say a quick one as I pass by tomorrow.

  283. andrewberkshire says:

Very true. I can’t remember the second round starting without a single day off before.

  284. AH says:

Final score 6-3, including 1 empty net goal, so if we kill those powerplays, what’s the score?…hmmm. considering how gassed they seemed, I’d say they did alright. I hate to beat a dead horse but MAB has to go, a peewee player could keep the puck in the offensive zone better than him, I’m at a loss for words at how lousy this guy is. On the other hand, PK is going to SOMETHING ELSE to watch next year, what a talent!!! Pouliot and AK are just passengers right now. I can’t believe you could look your teammates in the eye after efforts like that.

  285. dpthehabsfan says:

That goal was not the D’s fault, AK whiffed it into perfect break out position for the Pens. If it had gone deep, we could have got the line change together.

  286. andrewberkshire says:

Glad you can read my mind, Clay. You’re so full of it.

  287. HABSsince92 says:

I would be shocked if Markov plays again this series.

Been a Habs fan since I was in 2nd grade and sat behind Patrick Roy at the Aud.

  288. Shublips says:

This Markov loss could, needless to say, be crippling for the Habs.  That being said, maybe this is the chance that PK Subban needs to step into his own and show the world what he can do.

As for the loss?  Entirely predictable, imo.  The Habs looked slow and tired all night and the Pens, despite scoring 6 goals, didn’t look THAT impressive.

    They are beatable.

CBC tonight is like your local cable station doing high school hockey.

If Staal is hurt, that is a HUGE loss for Pitt. I think he is their 2nd best player. I would love to have that guy on our team.

  300. SeriousFan09 says:

Still got 3 by Fleury, if this was a 5-0 spanking it would be a different story but we still scored 3 times on them and that’s enough to win games. Players will focus on fixing the problems on their own end, but they also know they can beat the guy at the other end.

  311. T-roy West says:

Why don’t you blame Big Tits for that one? He was a big reason why Halak was left high and dry. But of course you like Big Tits. I blame Halak for one goal but even that one he was screened but I guess he could have tracked it better. Our defence could also have done their job better.

  312. habs-hampton says:

I think its more of an emotional let down than physical.

  313. Ron says:

  320. kempie says:

Pro-CBC? That’s an oxymoron. But seriously folks, people are pro-CBC?

  321. habfan1969 says:

Well this game was over the minute Halak was pulled, because you know, he’s the guy who always wins games, and Price never does … (sarcasm.)

Seriously though– my main beef with Martin was that he totally mismanaged these 2 developing goalies this year. Halak should have had more games in the first half (if only to see how he’d do against some of the better teams) and Price should have had more practice in the last 20 games of the season. It was utter folly to assume we’d only need the one goalie (or that “riding the hot hand” was a sustainable goalie policy). Seems like Martin caved to fan pressure to anoint Halak the be-all end-all. Bad idea for both goalies. Since few teams have made it to round 2 with goalies who’ve played 60 plus games, the lesson to me is playing a 2 goalie tandem is the way to prepare for the playoffs.

I wonder if Pitts noticed Halak’s glove-side goals with Wash. and focused on that tonight. Either way, like Price last year, obviously Halak needs to work on that glove side, or at least learn to step forward a bit to cut the angles.

That said, I hope we learned about this new opponent tonight. 6-3 is a respectable loss on their turf. Gill and Gorges are the core of our D now (when can Spacek come back? Would prefer him to more Bergie or Hammer minutes and personally I won’t miss Markov as much as most fans…) As with the regular season, if our D isn’t in top form and we don’t pot more than 2 or 3 goals we’re toast. I hope Martin spends a good while with his associates analyzing the tape and plotting some strategy and personnel fine-tuning …

  322. ManApart says:

Halak hasn’t been incredible tonight, but playing Price does absolutely nothing for the team. Win or lose, Halak must finish the game and regroup for Sunday.

  323. windernw says:

Why are the Habs playing fri(one day rest from gm 7) and then early on sunday(another 1 day rest) when the van-chi and phil-bos series are both starting on sat, even though they have been done since monday at the latest. Also det-sj play sun after they played on thurs…..what the deal??

  324. Ron says:

  325. Keith says:

CBC interviewing that POS Cooke and asking him about the hit. Man CBC really hates the Habs so much.

  326. TheMock780 says:

Sorry but how many players have we said deep down wanted to wear the CH? Mario Lemieux, Vinny Lecavalier, Marty Brodeur, etc. and none of them ever did. Crosby will do what every franchise player has done which is stick with one organization.

  327. joeybarrie says:

We are still competing, even after the crazy series we just had. This isn’t terrible. But The Pens are a more complete team, and there is more to pay attention to. Starting Price would have been a good idea. Halak DESERVED a break. But obviously wouldnt take one, neither would I. We can score 2 in the 3rd.

Again, Im just happy we are competing. You can tell we just finished a TOUGH Series. They had more time to rest. We will stick it to them next game. Hopefully, we can take it to overtime, or steal it in the 3rd.

There may be other teams, but only ONE Club De Hockey…

  328. MathMan says:

Alas, this might have been an interesting series. But if Markov is out for more than a couple games — and the crutches make it sound like an end-of-playoffs type injury — then the Habs are cooked, basically.

  329. ooder says:

so MAB goes to defend the  guy that is covered by subban and leave adams all alone.

the guy has zero hockey instinct..

wtf was he thinking.. that is a peewee mistake.

it’s not like it was a fast paly he had time to realise what was going on.

also pouliot is sooooo lazy and soft its unbeliveble..

he better be getting some sort of surgery or reveal an injury in the offseason because this paly is embarassing.

oh brother andrei.. i don’t even know anymore.

is it the epilepsy meds? is it the attitude… what is it?

“I like what I’m seeing right now,” assessed Markov. “We’re not perfect, but we’re trying to be.”

  330. ArmyFan says:

  332. zak says:

  333. HABSsince92 says:

Yes that is what sucks the most. F’n Bettman and NBC having to showcase Pitt on Sunday. How about you aholes focus on good hockey and not about building the game in the States? It’s ridullculus that the Canadiens had t go straight to Pitt after Wednesday’s game and then have to play an afternoon game on Sunday. I would be saying the same thing even if I wasn’t a Habs fan. I say the same thing every year come playoff time. It is an unfair advantage to one team. Pitt will easily have a 2-0 lead because of the schedule. Total Bull!

Been a Habs fan since I was in 2nd grade and sat behind Patrick Roy at the Aud.

No, and neither is Metropolit, who’s been an absolute joke the whole game. But AK is the easiest guy to bash.

  338. HardHabits says:

When Halak is tired he’s average or worse. When rested he’s lights out. I’d like to see Price start game 2 and Halak start game 3 even if the Habs win game 2. Price can still steal a game. I know it’s risky but that’s my opinion.

  350. T-roy West says:

That was hilarious!!! Good one Timo.

  351. fun police says:

pretty hard to assess the game tonight when halak was shaky at best.  five on five, the pens are no better than we are.  they are rested, they are healthy and we played with them at even strength.  if halak has even an average game we could have won the game.  as good as halak was last game, he was pretty bad tonight.

losing markov is huge, may not be able to overcome that.  pk stepped up, and i suspect will be better every game.  he is already way ahead of mab.

  352. smiler2729 says:

    Oh well

  353. Big Bird says:

Halak got chased from the nets.  So what?

We wouldn’t have made the playoffs without Halak and we definitely wouldn’t have beaten the Caps without him.

I’m honestly not upset.  I’m enjoying every moment.  Watching PK Subban is a joy.  We took down one Goliath and now we go after the next one.   We’ve beaten expectations twice.   I wouldn’t bet against us doing it again.

And if not we’ve got nothing to complain about.  This team has done us proud.  Period.

  354. ArmyFan says:

Mehhhh….whatever.   A very tired team (esp Halak).  Very understandable.  As others have mentioned, the Pens PP killed them. They have a little over a day now to watch the tapes, make some PK adjustments for Pittsburgh’s style on the PP.

Not sure about anyone else, but Halak maybe should have had 2 of those first 3 goals. The guy’s exhausted, so not blaming him at all.

What gives me hope is that they went 5 on 5 VERY solidly against this “elite” team, despite the fact that Pittsburgh hadn’t played since last Saturday.  I saw nothing overly special out of the Pens tonight, and a lot of good things from the Habs – forechecking, cycling in the Pens’ end, Subban in general, Hamr seems to have some rhythm back.  Nice that they outshot their opponents, too.

It takes four wins.  Lots of hockey left.

  355. Rob says:

no probably about it.  Hughson is the “A” play by play man, and i’m pretty sure that’s not him who’s calling the game and continuing to destroy his legacy

  356. smiler2729 says:

Last time he interviewed a Hab on HNIC, he asked Brian Gionta what he thought of the Leafs’ top 2 lines…

  357. xxricw6 says:

  358. K-hab25 says:

Realise who you’re arguing with bro, I mean Clay, really, his opinion matters. Since when!! He’s Shiloh’s cousin from China, ohh and Halak’s biggest cheerleader. You’re not going to get a neutral reply out of him, the Carey hate is strong in this one.

  359. Stuck_in_To. says:

Subban was stellar, Pleks invisible, and Gionta uncharacteristically penalized … and Glen Healy? I have to listen to this guy for another three games minimum? Crap. If HNIC is not going to carry the Habs in the first round, they should not be allowed to carry them in the second. Give me Gord Miller any day.

The Habs need a rest and to adjust to a new team. While many people were rather high on Martin’s coaching in the first round, they forget that he did not adjust very quickly in the first few games and may have cost us a game for that reason in the first round.

Most of our forwards were in a fog. Hope they can find their way out of it … and shoot me for saying so, but I am wondering if Price is not the goalie to get this team past Pittsburgh. I am not saying Halak will not be the right man again, say for round three, but both goalies have strengths and weaknesses … and, well … there it is.

  360. TripleX says:

Pairing a raw rookie who likes to take chances with our  WORST defenseman in the last minute of a period.  All those experts calling JM a genius because of three games and which I believe Muller was mainly responsible for making the adjustments need to rethink.

You guys need to get over your ‘CBC sucks’ thing… embrace being the ultimate underdog for a change, that’s how we beat the Caps. So what if CBC doesn’t ‘love’ the Habs, let ‘em not love ‘em hopefully deep into the playoffs

  363. habz says:

switched to CBC for a moment ,How hard it is to remember Jaro’s last name?? Cherry, It’s HALAK! not HAVLAT, then Mclean interviewed some guy..and calls him Havlat too! Freakin Schmucks!

  364. BrianSkrudland says:

Easy now, cowboy. I recognize (upon second review) that my comment seems to be a bit of a personal thing. It was, in fact, intended to be a comment about how some commentors tend to associate themselves too much with some players.

Your response is a bit over the top, but I won’t lose any sleep over it.

  387. SeriousFan09 says:

Only thing I will complain about is the NHL screwing us because they couldn’t come up with an excuse not to get the Penguins back on TV as soon as possible, next year if we play them after a Game 7 it’ll be part of a back-to-back night where we have to fly straight to Pittsburgh and play again.

Ruins and Filth, Hawks and Nucks each had several days to rest and prepare for their series, Detroit and Montreal had to come straight from Game 7 wins to the next series with little rest and no preparation. compressed schedule and no rest in the playoffs makes for bad hockey!

This is ugly. Halak looks tired, the team looks tired. This is 2004 all over again. A 7 game upset after coming back from 3-1 down in round one only to get steamrolled in the second round.

  392. punkster says:

Too funny. Really, they didn’t look bad for a bunch that’s dog-tired. Figure out how to handle the Pens PP and they may make a series out of this. If I was in the Pens room right now I wouldn’t be high fiving and breaking out the brews. And they’d be wise to hold off on the bravado interviews as well. Keep it low key or they’ll rile the Habs and we all know what could happen then.

4 for 4…. I refuse to beleive Bylsma detroyed our system that much, Halak is off his game, I’d like to see him rest for sunday, but it doesn’t look like thats happening. We really do need super Halak to win games, especially without Markov.

  403. novahab says:

Play Specek and sit MAB, Ak bring on Mets and Maxwell they will give us my grit . AK is just floating out there and making bad passes. MAB is a waste on forward and will kill us playing D. I think they need to play Price he bigger and i think he hungry. Halak was right for Washington maybe Price is right for the Pens. Thing is is Halak is tired not much sence playing him sunday give him the rest see how Price plays and if he loses then Halak will be ready in Montreal.

  404. JasonM says:

Double-check from Crosby, no call. Of course.

  405. habs4cup says:

HABS-QUITTERS!  when Pitt was up by 2 goals, habs stopped playing, as usual. it was men vs boys. habs just can’t compete with Pitt. and BTW, Pitt is light years ahead of Wash.

Habs beat Wash, because everyone beats Wash. Wash is known for loising series when up 3 games to 1. It’s a fact.

tonight was the real habs, you know the mediocre team that always quits when they’re behind.

Hey Jack you haven’t been around in a while. Not since the last game the Habs lost I believe. I wonder why that is? Hmmm. Could it be that you’re not a Habs fan? That you’re a fan of another team? Possible.

  425. coachdoug says:

    ______________________________________ Gionta for Captain.

  427. HotHabs says:

Habs looked tired and played a lot of sloppy hockey tonight.  They weren’t blocking shots like they had shown in the Caps series either, and they skated like they were in a foot of mud! Halak, while not having much chance on most of the Pens goals, looked like he didn’t have any edge or aggressiveness to his game either.

Pens outskated, outhustled, and outplayed Mtl for most of the night.

It was sad and frustrating to watch, but we all knew Habs would be exhausted in this one.  Even their emotional state was deflated compared to the elation they experienced vs. Wash.

Hate to say it, but if they don’t get a second wind, Habs will be done in 5 games… maybe less.

    Other thoughts:

    -Crosby is a whiner

    -Fleury is vastly overrated

    -Cooke is an a**

-AKost needs a kick in the pants (and a ticket out of Mtl soon – he can take along his brother to carry his bags too)

-soooooo sorry to see Markov out

-Subban is a great great young D-man and I hope we see him in the CH for many many years to come!

Lastly… I will never watch another game on CBC again.  Painful!!!

  428. Clark144 says:

where do i get more information on this

  429. ooder says:

Darche is a feel good story and nothing else…sorry to burst your bubble

the whole team is garbage tonight.. not jsut ak46

    they are obviosuly exhausted.

look at MAB, Gill, Pleks, Gio, Halak

they are all lead footed and tired

“I like what I’m seeing right now,” assessed Markov. “We’re not perfect, but we’re trying to be.”

  430. novahab says:

So Mr. Bettman I gues you got your wish playing this on Friday so the Habs would be tired . I hope the 2000 people glued in front of their TVS south of the board are happy . Is that you big TV contract you crook.

  431. HardHabits says:

This is crazy. I love these guys. What a team. I just love their character. Sucks that we’re losing but I just like this core. I am also getting a big hate on the Penguins.

  432. longtimehabsfan says:

I can’t blame Halak for any of the goals.  Sure, he looked shaky on some of his saves, but the goals were the result of screens and bad defense and bad PK.  Jaro was pulled to save him for the rest of the series.

  434. SeriousFan09 says:

It doesn’t make sense for the teams that finished in Game 7 to play ahead of teams that finished in 6 games. Chicago-Vancouver or Boston-Flyers should’ve kicked off and tonight Detroit should’ve played and tommorow Montreal.

Doesn’t make for good hockey, just shows the NHL can’t get it together for scheduling.

    - I shall always remember Captain Koivu.

  435. ross says:

But Metro is supposed to be a grinder, not a top-line scorer. And Metro also isn’t getting 1st/2nd line minutes with the team’s top players; AK is. What’s his excuse?

  436. JasonM says:

Detroit and Montreal both played a game 7, 48 hours before their 1st game of the next series, both lost. Meanwhile, 4 other teams haven’t played in 5-6 days. Poor planning.

what about the blog quotes? I couldn’t bring myself to watch Cherry post-game after “Havlak”

i know he’s definitely a little bitch in real life

  441. K-hab25 says:

Yet you saying Halak is an elite goaltender, because of those 3 games is ok though. Hypocrite!!

  442. Clay4bc says:

Just a reminder…Halak is why we are here, after his last three games. IMO he should have been pulled after 4 goals, just to rest him. But after what he did for this team in three elimination games, and after the team hung him out to dry like tonight, they had better give a better TEAM effort Sunday.

For all you optimists, your beer glass is half full and the Penguins have the dreaded 3-goal lead. With a dozen minutes left and the never-say-die character of this year’s team, stick around cuz anything can happen.

  444. ManApart says:

The change was good, but no way in hell you give Price the start next game. Too much on the line to rest Halak.

  446. ArmyFan says:

Sometime explain this to me – I didn’t quite see what happened.

What happened on Gionta’s “roughing” penalty (that was then changed to delay of game)?  Looked like he cleared the puck out of his end, into one of the team benches.  Did I not see that correctly? Next thing, he’s in the box for what was initially shown as a roughing penalty, but was then explained away as delay of game.

If that is, in fact, what happened, the rule states as follows (from

“When any player or goalkeeper, while in his defending zone, shoots  the puck directly (non-deflected) out of the playing surface, except where there is no glass, a penalty shall be assessed for delaying the game. When the puck is shot into the players’ bench, the penalty will not apply. When the puck is shot over the glass ‘behind’ the players’ bench, the penalty will be assessed.”

Last I checked, there is no glass on the players’ benches.  Penalty to Mtl, Pittsburgh goal.

    Did I see this right?

  447. topher5468 says:

I highly doubt it. Halak just needs rest. He’s not yet conditioned to start this many games. A season a full time starter will help to solve that.

    My how I love Cammalleri.

Jeff Marek read some emails that just painted Hab fans as spoiled bandwagon jumpers (he’s probably right from reading Habs I/O but I don’t need that dirty shame out there). One email from a Hab fan who was “glad he kept the tags on his new jersey so he could take it back” and another email from some clown calling Halak “Red Light Halak”.

Cherry blew a gasket questioning why Hockey Night In Canada would stoop to that and Maclean agreed.

  577. T-roy West says:

    Ask Berkshire!

  578. Bryan says:

They have most definitely folded.  The KHL doesn’t take interest in the stability of individual teams.  They merged with another team, I think.

The Habs are making me Bi-Polar.

  579. mrhab says:

Two things I’d say we need to do

    1) keep MAB off the ice unless its a PP.  There is absolutly no reason to have him on there unless we want to give the puck to the Penguins

    2) Does it make anyone else a little nervours whenever Jaro goes out and plays the puck.  Stopping it behind the net is one thing, but when he passes it or fires it around the boards, the hairs on my neck stand up

  580. SeriousFan09 says:

Penguins aren’t scaring me, they’re a two-trick pony called Malkin and Crosby up front. Yes, those are two incredibly talented players but rarely do I see both Malkin and Crosby simeltaneously playing to their best in the post-season. Staal may be the best 3rd-line centre in the NHL, but he’s also crappy on faceoffs and aside from being a great penalty killer isn’t going to give us much trouble.

Our wingers are much, much better than theirs, our special teams were superior on PP for the entire regular season and our post-season PK, well you know the story and our defence just completed a tour de force on besting the best offensive unit in the NHL. I saw the gaps in the Penguins defensive coverage in Pens-Senators, it’s beatable especially for a stable of fast wingers. Oh and our goalie? Way, way better than Fleury so far. Secret weapons? Subban and Pouliot, I have a feeling if Benny scores a goal he’s just going to start flying around again.

Yes that’s what’s happened so far, but the Penguins are due for some humbling and it falls to Montreal to deliver it. Beating the Senators in post-season isn’t really much of an accomplishment, now they have to face a team that’s pulled off a monumental upset and is looking to do it again.

Cool to see that Dumont is with the Dogs, they could use the offensive assistance, not sure if they can substitute him in now with the playoff eligibility rules somehow but for next year, it’ll be nice to see some new offensive talent on the Bulldogs with Subban certainly moving up the ladder. If Alex Avtsin hops the pond, Dogs will have a whole lot more firepower in their arsenal.

  581. Will Longlade says:

Mike, what’s the story on Pleks? I noticed that he was being used
sparingly by JM in the last 3 games. Maybe I just didn’t notice him and his contribution was subtle. Conscious decision by JM or undisclosed injury?

  582. ooder says:

let’s be fair then.. they are a two trick stalion

  584. SeriousFan09 says:

I’ll call them that when Sid can do better than a dirtstache in the post-season.

  585. Hockey Socks says:

Nice to hear Dumont signed an entry-level contract with the Habs. Can’t wait to see what he does in Hamilton. If he can continue to improve at the pro level, we might have another late-round gem on our hands.

Also, today is the last day the city of Laval is taking proposals to build an arena in the city. The Bulldogs owner has expressed interest in maybe making a bid. With the Bulldogs posting some pretty dismal attendance figures despite their huge season, there’s a huge incentive financially for the Bulldogs to move to Laval. I’m down.

  586. SeriousFan09 says:

I’m not in to that, but I’m 20 minutes from Hamilton.

    - I shall always remember Captain Koivu.

  587. Will Longlade says:

Agree. The Pens are an excellent team, but they’re not the juggernaut they were last year. Fleury has fallen back to earth and they rely on their go to guys too much. That’s OK for the regular season, but doesn’t cut it in the playoffs when the checking is tighter. I really like the Habs chances in this series. The team’s head to head record against the Pens this year was flattering to the Pens. The Habs played them tough with a depleted line-up.

I would love to see AK46 and Pouliot pot a few, but they’re playing well defensively. Maybe that’s the price to pay for playoff success.

  588. BeachHabFan says:

just listened to phil bourque, pens radio analyst, on hockeycentral (fan590). slagging gill and the habs D – to paraphrase, “we’re talking hal gill, not ray bourque… big and slow an that’s why shero didn’t re-sign him… guys block shots when they can’t catch up or are out of position – ottawa did it and we got around it consistently”. i was pumped before, but crap like that gets me fired up to see what happens tonight.

  589. Hockey Socks says:

I live in Laval and would be a happy season ticket holder for an AHL team here. A city of 400,000 people should have at least a junior hockey team!

In this series, Im hoping for the best, but expecting the worst.

  592. 100HABS says:

“…but rarely do I see both Malkin and Crosby simultaneously playing to their
    best in the post-season.”

Note that if only one of the two plays great, we’re done – last year, it seemed one of them took it to their opponent for each series and that was that. They have lost ONE SERIES IN THE PAST 2 YEARS! Wrap your head around that stat.

Thank God Gill is now on our side…

  593. mbplekfan says:

Dumont played the season as an overage junior. That pretty much explains the offense.

He is undersized (again) and will face a huge uphill battle in the AHL. I dont expect much out of him.

  594. badangel says:

did he watch more than 5 minutes of the Habs Caps series!?

    Down with Crosby/Malkin/Gonchar et al.

  595. mbplekfan says:

PK started to look more comfortable on the ice and will continue to get better.  I like pairing him with Hamrlik and letting him learn the pro game. Im not sure he will stick around for the full series but he is better than MAB and the experience in going to do wonders for his start next year.

  596. SeriousFan09 says:

Sharks have often been frustrated by having their stars underperform in the post-season and it costs them every single year. How long can the Penguins rely on only one of their 2 superstars being a top player in a post-season series? It is a weakness, especially considering the weakness of the Pen’s wingers on each side of the two superstars.

    - I shall always remember Captain Koivu.

  597. avatar_58 says:

That’s not really fair to us Hamilton residents. Some of us have jobs and bills and can’t go to every game. We don’t have an NHL team so the bulldogs are all we have, you already have the habs close enough.

I *just* got into the dogs this season. I’d be very dissapointed if we lost them. I even bought a jersey for game 6.

  598. Habalisous says:

Yeah, just heard that as well….seems the pens don’t respect what the habs just did to the caps….good.

”You miss 100% of the shots you never take.” – Wayne Gretzky

  599. SeriousFan09 says:

Gabriel Dumont was 18 at the draft and turned 19 last October, he played another season of junior following his draft call much like everyone from the 2009 draft class not named Duchene, Kane, Tavares, Hedman and Kulikov. That’s not being an over-ager at all, that’s just doing what nearly everyone does.

    - I shall always remember Captain Koivu.

  600. avatar_58 says:

Dumont being signed – that doesn’t mean he can play yet though does it? Like game 2?

  601. avatar_58 says:

I’d rather see Subban on the 4th/3rd line than MAB if Spacek comes back….

  602. Cee_8ch says:

Christopher Lee was a Britsh actor in the 1960″s whose claim to fame was playing Dracula in several movies. Chris Lee, as an NHL referee, continues the tradition, by being a one-man horror show.

Hopefully, the equally inept and incompetent Gary Bettman, will have assigned Lee to do only road hockey games in Poughkeepsie from now until October.

  603. Axeman says:

He was also “The Man with the Golden Gun” … but Bond, James Bond took him out.

Wonder if there will be any MI-6 agents at the game tonight?

  604. GrimJim says:

I don’t think the habs can move him down. They have used all 4 of the callups they are allowed until the bulldogs are eliminated from the AHL playoffs.

  605. SeriousFan09 says:

It has to mean something though. Plenty of time to sign guys like Dumont in the off-season since we own his pro rights as our draft pick and what good does sending Dumont to play with the Dogs in practice do? Let’s hope it means he can get in the game, Dogs could use some scoring touch around the net.

    - I shall always remember Captain Koivu.

  607. StevieRay says:

I like Benny with Laps and Moore .. seems like some chemistry there .

  608. Chuck says:

Plus, the AHL has a stupid tendency of scheduling ‘Dogs games at the same times as Hab games. So if you’re a Hab fan within driving distance of Copps Coliseum, where are you going  to be? Not at Copps, watching the Habs.

Cheer for the crest on the front of the jersey, not the name on the back.

  609. zozotheclown says:

I’m thinking game 1 will be seriously tough to win, with game 2 having better odds. Simple reasoning is that they’re more rested and have more importantly had time to prepare to face us, while we’ve had to travel and have less time to prepare, video wise. Still, the Halak factor can never be counted out.

Shutting down Crosby and Malkin won’t be significantly harder then then Ovy and Backstrom, but the problem is if we do shut them down they’ll still do their jobs defensively, something Ovy lacked. Another big difference will be the hitting, Wsh barely threw any, and if I remember correctly they were 3rd last in hits and we were last, while the Penguins were a fair bit higher. If I were a coach thats the first thing I would tell my players to do on the Canadiens, dump and chase and make them pay in the corners. Wsh very seldon did this, they liked to walk the puck in, which was great for us because Gill and Co would hit and sweep check the puck away no problem. The Pens will be more difficult to deal with, and I hope our D don’t shy away from the puck in the corners like we saw alot last year, what I mean is when our D purposely let the opposing team get the dump-ins, then tried to hit them, instead of paying the price and getting the puck out. Plus I don’t expect a 1-33 PP from the Pens, they might have a worse PP, but I think they have a better coach, who’ll probably say something other then “go score” to his PP if they struggle.

In any case, I expect this to be a much harder series, but as we’ve seen from our guys, nothings impossible if you never give up…well…. as long as you have Halak that is.

  610. sidhu says:

The Boone reverse jinx!  I think you predicted the Caps in five.

you know i don’t feel that bad that washington spent most of the time in our zone. that was our game plan as the underdog. we knew they were going to spend a lot of time in our zone so we had to capitalize on our chances, and then keep their shots on the outside, and block shots. we executed the game plan perfectly.

i don’t think one player on the team felt like they were dominated by the caps and they would say they felt in control of the game despite the time spent in their own zone. the caps made it easy with redundancy so it was never total domination because we chose not to do 3 man or 2 man forecheck, we chose to have a 1 man forecheck and keep 4 back and with that style, it comes with defending and we defended perfectly.

overall, our gameplan was not to take it to the caps and dominate them, but to make sure that we limit their domination to low-percentage areas, keeping us in control

The hate-on for Chris Lee has gotten out of control.

NHL reffing, in general, is piss poor, I’ll give you that much. But here’s a news flash- teams that spend a lot of time chasing the puck, or hemmed into their own end, tend to take penalties. The fatigue puts players out of position, and indiscipline creeps in. Not to mention the fact that many of our guys were still figuring out the system in March, and positioning/zone clearance wasn’t great. So, yes, the reffing is bad- but the Habs have done little to help themselves. Our PK got us out of trouble, notably in the last minute of game 7 (AAAACK, O’Byrne: two steps forward, one back)– but we have to play with more discipline, more control, or we are going to get destroyed… and it won’t be Chris Lee’s fault. It’s convenient and easy to blame to refs, but it won’t be their fault.

Terry Gregson: Gary, have I got a guy for you. 9 years of NHL officiating, until this year, he’s coached 4 total playoff games because he’s lousy at his job. Not that we admit of course, the NHLOA doesn’t make mistakes. Hates the Canadiens with a passion, called back a clear goal against the Penguins in an earlier game this year to prevent the game from going to overtime.

Bettman: Still, can’t make it too obvious we’re trying to put the Canadiens out, what do we do there?

Gregson: I’ll toss in Bill McCreary, but he might be retiring this year anyway so at this point I doubt he cares about us trying to fix game results anymore.

Bettman: Brilliant! I’m appointing you NHL Director of Officating for life!

Not sure if it was the right move, but Clark had not really been around in the last two years to lead the team anyway.

I suspect Mcphee will start looking for some playoff veterans in FA this offseason and possibly target Anton Volchenkov to steady the Capitals D.

  639. Da Hema says:

Good post. There is, however, fault to be assigned for a referee of the “quality” of Chris Lee: the NHL itself and his officiating colleagues. This man is not a competent NHL official, and yet nothing evidently is being done to deal with Lee and other officials who clearly cannot perform their tasks at the professional level. You are quite right that the Habs were largely responsible for the penalties they took during the regular season. Too many times our defence was worn out from skating around their end and subsequently pressured to make bad decisions (e.g., the “Hamrlik Special” of tossing the puck over the glass) or because forwards were not where they were supposed to be (e.g., hello Andrie Kostitsyn) or were unwilling to go to the boards to chip out the puck (e.g., hello once again Andrie). Blaming the officiating as frequently as some posters did here always struck me as wrong.

  644. B says:

Not sure how Ovechkin is in the room, but pretty much everytime they show him there on TV he is in his own world with his headphones on listening to music. While he may be the best player on the ice, he does not strike me as a leader type. He just seems too much of an individual rather than a team first guy.

Does Washington have enough cap room to sign Volchenkov? Backstrom has earned a big raise from his entry level deal that has just run out. Volchenkov is looking for a long term deal at around $5M per. He turned down a 5 year $20M deal from Ottawa. I guess after exploding for a career high 4 goals he figures he is due top $s now.

  645. SeriousFan09 says:

Like I said, I don’t know if it was the right move but I don’t get this thing of how Chris Clark was a big deal for the Capitals as he was basically MIA for two straight seasons and wasn’t exactly a huge guy on the ice before he was traded this season. I honestly thought Backstrom was going to start wearing the C next year when I heard the news, he seemed to be setting up in that role.

If they dump Semin (a possibility, two bad playoff years in a row) they’d open up the room since they still have a pretty good stable of scoring wingers even if Semin goes. Volchenkov just might be interested in playing for a different team, who knows.

I would put that kind of sloppiness near the top of the agenda for next year in terms of team improvement.

It’s easy to blame the refs. But as a friend of mine always says, when you point your finger at someone else, there are three fingers pointing back at yourself. Or something.

  648. Chorske says:

I think the Caps could make a MUCH better case about biased reffing- I thought Green’s “crosscheck” was a lame call, and I definitely don’t think their goal should have been called back. Really? Interference? On that play? I don’t think so.

  655. SeriousFan09 says:

Than what, wait 30 years and rename it the Sidney Crosby Trophy because no one remembers who Patrick Roy was anymore besides older sportswriters, Avs and Canadiens fans? Once you start going with the renaming thing to ‘update’ the trophies than it’ll just be a liscence to rename them every 20-30 years to make them more relevant. Conn Smythe was a total ***, but Ted Lindsay was a guy responsible for bringing in penalties against kneeing and elbowing for crying out loud. Doug Harvey was simply the best defencemen to ever live not named Bobby Orr and got the same treatment for trying to organize a player’s union as Lindsay, but without being a *** on the ice.

Just reads as amateurish to me. Strong, rich history with players lifting the Hart, Norris, Conn Smythe, Stanley Cup and such for achievement. I don’t see how renaming the trophies does anything but just start the bandwagon for changing everything whenever it’s convenient for the NHL to dumb things down more for the casual fans who jump on the bandwagon teams. They renamed the Divisions and Conferences to geographical locations for that reason.

I am also one of the many who have been crediting Gainey for building this team…yes, it has more heart and grit than his previous team…but this team should not be considered better than prior Gainey teams until it gets past the 2nd round.

I’m tired of the NHL bending over backwards for the bandwagon fans who bought their Crosby or Ovechkin jerseys two years ago, changing their schedules to accomodate NBC which cares more about the Kentucky Derby than an NHL game when they don’t even pay the NHL to broadcast the games. Tired of the NHLPA not having their crap together so it’s easier for a dwarf in the front office to screw up the league while he pursues an insane southern market and expansion that has done nothing diluted the talent and quality of the NHL. Tired of officiating that’s bush league in the playoffs and ignores basic incompetence in the regular season. Why can’t we just leave the trophies alone and rename the Divisions and Conferences after the Greats like some have suggested? Lemieux and Gretzky Conferences, Beliveau, Orr, Howe, Roy, Harvey and Hull Divisions?

And I don’t think you can rightly name any particular trophy after just a single player either. Should Doug Harvey be the guy who won 7 Orr (Norris) Trophies? Should Howe and Lemieux be guys who won six Gretzky (Art Ross) trophies? Not that I’d mind seeing the Selke get renamed the Gainey though but is it fair to have Carbo and Lehtinen as two guys with three Gainey trophies? Start defining that player as the all-time best player in that category, it does a bit of disservice to guys who were just as big in their own times or didn’t get the same opportunity to do what that guy did because of where they played or injury.

Renaming the trophies after a particular player is too subjective for me.

    the word is infamous

“I like what I’m seeing right now,” assessed Markov. “We’re not perfect, but we’re trying to be.”

  700. ooder says:

aright lets see a good competitive game…

i really hope i don’t see the boys flat footed and tired

“I like what I’m seeing right now,” assessed Markov. “We’re not perfect, but we’re trying to be.”

  701. TripleX says:

Sorry, but I have to agree with Pierre.  Strength down the middle is always key to building a winner from the goalie on out.  No team has three better players down the middle than the Pens.  It is ridiculous how much talent they have in that position and then they have Fluery in net.  WOW!

  702. T-roy West says:

Can we all agree that AK46 doesn’t belong on the first two lines. He plays like he doesn’t care and I don’t think he is much of a team player. But that is just my opinion. I actually think that we are one top six forward away from a stanley cup. Doesn’t mean we won’t or can’t this year but it would suck if we went all the ways to the finals only to come up short because management didn’t address an important issue.

  703. Danno says:

We have a giant spy on our team who knows all of the Penguins’ secrets…

“Hey Richard, two minutes for looking so good!”

  704. andrewberkshire says:

Chris, you just keep up your hum drum attitude, seemed to work last series!

  705. Rob says:

nope.  can’t say i agree with you.  understand your point of view, but i don’t agree with it.  I think Kostitsyn belongs on the top 2 lines or not there at all.  There’s no question he’s inconsistent though i feel he has played generally well in the last several games.  now if your point was that in the OFFSEASON we shoudl be looking to upgrade over A.Kost?….wll then i woudl agree.  But in terms of the Habs current personnel….Kosti Sr. is definitely first two line material…IMO

  706. HardHabits says:

Just imagine what Mike Richards, Jeff Carter, Zach Parise, or Ryan Getzlaf would bring in his stead.

AK46! It’s time to live up to your #10 pick and stop sulking because your bro is benched.

I also agree that AK should be benched. Unfortunatley the Dogs are still in it and the Habs have exhausted their call-ups until they’re out.

  707. HardHabits says:

Apparently the Vandoos never took any. Why then should Les Canadiens?

If we make it past this round I might just use this as my avatar.

  708. ooder says:

Carter: 15 points in 33 playoff games

kostitsyn: 15 points in 23 playoff games

“I like what I’m seeing right now,” assessed Markov. “We’re not perfect, but we’re trying to be.”

  709. SeriousFan09 says:

Fleury and his .890 save % against Ottawa missing two of their top 6 skaters? Hardly terrifying. He isn’t Roy 2.0, He isn’t even Roy .5 right now. Halak’s much better than he is at the moment. Strength down the middle is great, but the number of times I’ve seen the wingers of Crosby and Malkin throw away a good scoring opportunity they were set up for is pitiful. Staal is the best 3rd-line centre in the NHL perhaps, but he wouldn’t be a 2nd-liner for a Contender squad either, doesn’t have the vision nor decent finish.

    - I shall always remember Captain Koivu.

  710. andrewberkshire says:

Have you seen Fleury play since January? Fleury is one of the worst starters in the NHL right now. He has a career ~3.5 GAA against the Canadiens. We have a better shot in this series than we did against the Capitals.

  711. andrewberkshire says:

We definitely can not agree. Kostitsyn has produced more than any forward not named Cammalleri and Plekanec in these playoffs, so who’s going to replace him in the top 6?

  712. HardHabits says:

    How about:

Richards 28 points in 37 playoff games

Getzlaf 47 points in 56 playoff games

Parise 28 points in 37 playoff games

However, now the intagible. All those players bring it every game, better, every shift. If AK did, he’d be far and away better than all the aforementioned, but he rarely brings it. He needs to step it up. He had a hattie in a loss last series. Not the stuff of legends.

  713. T-roy West says:

Andrew I do respect your opinion but what games have you been watching? He has one good game. Hold me back. He is useless. If you really like that type of player then I would love to coach against you. Peace.

  714. andrewberkshire says:

He just had a great shift.

  715. T-roy West says:

Not bad, your right but I like consistency. We already had one type like Kovalev. No more please.

  716. PrimeTime says:

Still no one in the greater media giving our Habs any respect all saying that WAS played into their hands and made it easy for MTL. BAH! Habs played the game plan they needed to to win games 6 and 7 (with a little help from Sir Halak) but I’m confident the team can execute a different plan as this series progresses. Everyone talking about Halak and our D but our O may surprise many. Habs may not win the series but hopefully the critics will once again witness how resilient our team can be and at the very least make PIT earn the series unlike an injury riddled OTT team in round 1.

Never underestimate the heart of an underdog or the experience of the veterans BG added to the team. I would love nothing better than our Boys to knock off PIT from their smug podium and shut-up all the “star” loving media.

    GO HABS GO!!!

…off-subject to tonight’s exciting ‘happening’ tonight

…but, it seems the re-naming of the Lester B. Pearson Trophy by the NHLPA is fait-accompli …Is anyOne besides Me still pissed for re-naming a trophy that has an almost 40-year history ?

    …was it a Total NHLPA Membership initiative …or a Chelios/Fehr (American) iniative ?

…is a (Terrible) Ted Lindsay qualitatively-representative of the player of the year award (chosen by their peers) ? …WHEN was ‘Terrible’ Ted Lindsay EVER the BEST player during his NHL career ? …or close (…the Wings most often losin’ to Our Habs during his days in the NHL)

…IF it was to be re-named ? …WHY was it not named the Lindsay-Harvey Memorial Award to recognize the first 2 EQUALLY most important initiators of organizing NHL players as a precursor to today’s NHLPA

…I believe the ‘re-naming’ was a Chelios/Fehr ‘thang’ …and the typical NHL player are but ‘sheep’ letting these Americans f&5k-around with Our (the NHL’s) History

    Habitant means PASSIONATE HOCKEY

  718. SeriousFan09 says:

I find this move highly questionable and I find myself vindicated on that when Healy wrote a CBC article saying he approved it, since only a fool like Healy could agree with it. If it is recognition for someone who tried to organize the NHL players like they say, I agree it should equally recognize Harvey as well, who got railroaded for trying to get it organized with Lindsay and barring Orr, is the finest defencemen in NHL history.

Sets a bad precedent for giving the NHL a reason to rename the other trophies down the line.

    Habitant means PASSIONATE HOCKEY

  721. andrewberkshire says:

Ted Lindsay was chosen because the award is an NHLPA award and he was the most instrumental player in creating the NHLPA. It’s just an award, who cares what the name is? Why on earth would a Canadian politician’s name be on a hockey trophy anyway? There’s no real reason to object to renaming this trophy.

  723. SeriousFan09 says:

Reports were before the playoffs started Plekanec was battling a hip injury in the last 10 or so games of the season. Which I believe, he seemed to have trouble making some of the more fluid movements we saw from him earlier this season. It’s made it harder to contribute offensively down the stretch and while he’s taken rest days, the 7-game series I think grinded on him further. He was still there on the PK and game 1 was won off of his stick, still has 4G, 3A in 7 games which is only 2 points short of his all-time best from 9P in 12 games in 07-08 playoffs.

    - I shall always remember Captain Koivu.

  724. Exit716 says:

Too bad the NHLPA wasn’t too concerned about the old timers back in the day when Carl Brewer and company had to sue the NHL to get their due.

This smacks of convenience. Why doesn’t the NHLPA and today’s players fight the league to give the oldtimers a bigger piece of the pie?

Or would that cut into too much of their own self-interests?

  725. SeriousFan09 says:

Just seems rather amateurish to rename a trophy that was donated by Pearson while the NHLPA can’t get organized enough to order lunch on most days. He donated the trophy, they decided to call it the Pearson in honour of the person who donated it and maintained that for decades.

NHL was already sniffing around renaming the other trophies earlier this year, I really don’t like that the NHLPA is seemingly giving them an excuse by examining how closely connected the trophy’s name is with hockey. The Hart and others could be threatened if they’re going to scrutinize the value in calling certain trophies by their current names.

  726. Ian Cobb says:

I will be looking for a split in Pittsburgh. Just have to play smart and disciplined. Keep the score close going into the 3rd and anything is possible.

No pressure on us tonight, so playing loose will be an advantage. The boys are playing for each other now, this group has now become a team. And they are a lot of fun to watch.

  727. Da Hema says:

I don’t believe Pearson himself donated the trophy. It was named in his honour (which was certainly deserved). Let’s all be grateful the trophy wasn’t re-named the “Gary Bettman Trophy” or perhaps even worse the “William Wadsworth ‘Dollar Bill’ Wirtz Trophy.”

“There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge….”

    –Hunter S. Thompson

  728. Chuck says:

He donated the trophy, so out of respect the name should be untouchable. Watch out, or soon teams will be challenging for the Crosby Cup.

Cheer for the crest on the front of the jersey, not the name on the back.

  729. andrewberkshire says:

I could care less who donated a trophy. Some of the trophies immortalize some of the biggest scum bags to ever be involved in hockey, Conn Smythe for example. I see no problem whatsoever in renaming all the trophies aside from those named after players like the Rocket Richard trophy or the Vezina. The awards after all, are for players and coaches, not prime ministers and former owners. I can think of no reason why the Conn Smythe for example, wouldn’t be better served if it were called the Patrick Roy trophy.

  730. Castor says:

    Wow. Goosebumps

  731. Willy the bum says:

Dangerous territory indeed.  All I wish is a Habs win out of two games from the Igloo.  Therefore they can come home with a win advantage.

Somebody should watch Matt Cooke out, ’cause if he injure one of the major Habs players (and could be important in the playoffs), it definitely damage their chances to succeed.

I called it: 3-2 Habs, regulation.

  732. andrewberkshire says:

He’s done that his whole career.

  733. crabvader says:

    Entirely under the radar, too.

Imagine with the exposure he got and everyone aware and wanting a piece of him like they did this year?

Stop argueing with me on this one.

  734. JasonM says:

Dude, Cooke is a known cheap-shot artist across the league. He’s been so good at it he made 20 something extremely rich men get together in mid-season solely due to him and modify a rule because of his ability to get away with things that come close to ending other player’s careers.

This is the 2nd time in 13 months that Markov has been targeted to be taken out on a quasi-legal play, remember the little **** Grabs last year in our final Toronto game?

  751. longtimehabsfan says:

Put Subban’s heart in Pouliot’s body and we might have a superstar.

  752. MikeMcLaren says:

There were two teams I thought the Canadiens matched up well against going into the playoffs, teams I was hoping we would play in the first round: The Buffalo Sabres and the Washington Capitals.

There were two teams I really would have rathered the Habs didn’t play – The Devils and the Penguins.

But if you want to be the best, you have to beat the best.  Despite what the pundits (AGAIN) say, this Canadiens team can beat the Penguins in a seven game series.  If you don’t believe that, don’t watch the games.

Sidney Crosby has been unworldly in the first round, but so has Jaroslav Halak and the Canadiens’ effort, spirit, committment, team defense, etc. etc.

I think they can do this.  I really do.  Not easy, but do-able.

  753. SeriousFan09 says:

Subban’s talent obvious, his development over last training camp? Unbeliveable.

Now imagine Boucher coaching the best out of all of the young guys.
