Gionta: Save

  1. The_Franchise31 says:

Why sooo much love for DD! He’s put between the two best forwards on out team, at the moment. He’s slow, small and terrible at face offs. I wish Eller was between to half decent players….

  2. nova scotia vees says:

I love how you all circle the wagons when it comes to pretty boy Price. Most of you seem to forget how truly “great” goalies “steal” games even when their team plays like crap. Still waiting for the Carey steals….

    • habsfan0 says:

You might as well keep waiting. I really don’t see things changing a lot. You either have it or you don’t (ability to steal games). They say a goalie doesn’t hit his prime until he’s about 31 or so..but the ability to steal games should be evident at an earlier age.

    • Habfan4lfe says:

Well you’re blind, he steals most nights when his defence in front of him F’s up. The goals in shootout were goals not too many in this league would have stopped. They’re goalie was no better but we couldn’t hit the net and then the ones who could were sitting on the bench.

    • LL says:

      “Pretty boy Price”

So if he were butt ugly, would you like him more? 😉

  3. Ian Cobb says:

These players deserve much better coaching.

I just do not know how they suck it up every night knowing this Martin guy is the worse coach they have ever played for in their careers.

  4. matraque says:

DD was once again amazing tonight. Too bad, no one seems to give him credit.

    Canadien en 5!
    Never go Full Retard

  5. J.Ambrose.OBrien says:

I still say this team’s biggest three issues are thus:

    * a horrible power-play.

    * an inability to get out of their own zone, and they get bottled up for long stretches that often result in scrambled goals

    * an inability to win key face-offs.

All three are down to poor coaching and poor personnel selections (like letting Halpern go).

    I remember Dec. 31, 1975

    • Habfan4lfe says:

Your first 2 = Martin being a lousy coach using the wrong players and strategy.

#3, the guys taking the faceoff have the most ice time and they’re puny. They’re no match. Twice tonight Plekanec won the face off the guy overpowered him skated behind him and got puck. Desharnais, they just sweep him aside. What can you do?

      • HardHabits says:

Desharnais is the Habs best centre. And that’s not saying much for the team’s depth at that position. Plex on the point for the PP isn’t helping.

I can’t stand the line combos of choices. There was a winning line-up and that team no longer exists. Nokia-Blunden-Darche was the best 4th line in a while. Now it’s a Gomez-Nokia hodge podge.

        • habsfan0 says:

Desharnais reminds me of a diminutive
“Pocket” Richard who never let his lack of height bother him.

        • Habfan4lfe says:

Well Eller is better than Plekanec at faceoffs and Eller if you note difference in playing time has better FO% than Desharnais. Desharnais doesn’t win along the boards as much as Eller and he also doesn’t have the size or puck finesse. If Eller played as much as Desharnais (at center) he would probably be better.

I know, Plek’s on PP is doing zip and has done zip except for the fluke goal.

The combo’s are the result of Martin, what can you do about dumbo? Fire another assistant coach?

          • Everlasting1 says:

Eller is so disposable it ain’t funny. He has nothing on DD.

Thus sayeth the Lord, “Destroyed I the Amorite before them, whose height was like the height of the cedars, and he was strong as the oaks.” Amos 2:9

“We don’t see things as they are, but as we are.” – Anais Nin

    • BMO HAB says:

Very good points you raised there and all of them are fixable now.

PP: Think outside the box…obviously what they have tried and what they are doing isn’t working. Maybe it wouldn’t be the worst idea in the world to have Lars Eller see some PP time. He is a playmaker – great passer.

Geeting out of our end: This has been a problem prior to this year….its just raising its ugly head more often now. For the most part our defensemen can’t make the first outlet pass because of agressive forcheck and our wingers /centre don’t comeback in time to help out in tandem for 2 quick passes to get out of the zone and turn the play to our advantage.

Winning Face-offs: WE had that 5 day hiatus….why wasn’t Yannick Perreault called in to run some training sessions for the team. This guy should be around on a regular basis. No sense having some Asst. Coach who was a D-Men or Forward try to teach you that if he’s never done it. Get the guy who did it and did it well.

Of course these things would take 1) some management skills and 2) some Head Coaching Skills and we’re SOL on that front.

“I reject your reality and substitute my own”.

      – Adam Savage

  6. ooder says:

yo was Eller hurt.. where was he for the third period?
also great game by Emelin, if the injuries bring anything good it is to show JM that he is dumb not to use Emelin
The 2010-11 Stanley Cup was not won, but given

  7. olematelot says:

When you consider the players who have been and are missing from the line up I think they are hanging in there pretty well. People crap on players like Diaz etc who have been put in a situation they aren’t prepared for and wouldn’t be in if not for the injuries. Cut them some slack, better times are ahead.

  8. The Dude says:

If you took the yearly pay of Gointa,Gnomes and Cammi and got 2 real superstars we would rock! No ,just thought bout it,J-Mart would eff it up!

  9. J.Ambrose.OBrien says:

    1. Eric Cole just keeps looking better and better. Fast, powerful, and determined. And he and Patches seem to really feed off each other. And with the industrious and creative DD, that line looks dangerous everytime they are on the ice.

    2. Gorges is far and away our best defenseman. No sign of diminishing skills or effort after the surgery.

    3. Subban seems to be playing more within himself and not trying to do too much. Thus, he was quite effective tonight.

    4. The other PK (as in man short) continues to be one of the league’s best.

    5. Despite a ridiculous string of injuries, we are still a point ahead of the Bruins. Mind you, we are also 4 behind the Leafs.

    I remember Dec. 31, 1975

  10. habstrinifan says:

I have done the research!!! And STATISTICALLY am justified in making the OBSERVATION that Jessica the reporter is more astute in use of PP personnel than JM the coach.

Hope she turns her attention to PLEKS ON THE POINT next.

  11. piper says:

just wondering, what if that was matt cooke that hit miller? suspension?

  12. doogie says:

Other than Cole, Pleks, Max Pac and Price, this is a mediocre AHL team. Seriously, Eller needs to play in the A to learn how to score the puck. Even Subban needs to learn how to play like a professional athlete.

In baseball, triple A ball is for youth coming up (Eller, Diaz, DD, Emelin, etc) and for old washed up farts going down (Gomer and Gionta particularly)

Hamilton is missing its Bulldogs! Check their record and you’ll see that they’re not very good, cause all of their players are in Montreal.

  13. Ian Cobb says:

Anyone who say’s Price cost us the game, does not know a thing about this game. He was stellar the whole game. He made huge saves time and time again. he was awesome.

His coach let him down again, as he let every player on the team down. I think the boys can win this division, but not with this Martin guy behind the bench.

I would take Betty Crocker ahead of this fool.

    • piper says:

even betty burns a cake now and again.
an old harry neal one liner.

    • habsfan0 says:

Price didn’t cost us this particular game, but the fact of the matter is,when a game goes beyond 60 minutes in regular season or playoffs,Price’s record is horrendous. Does not exactly conjure up images of Patrick Roy who absolutely shone under similar circumstances behind some very mediocre teams….speaking of which…I would love to see Patrick Roy as the goaltender coach of the Habs. He could probably teach Carey a thing or two.

      • ManApart says:

Price is as clutch as Roy was humble.

      • Habfan4lfe says:

I’d like to see you do better. I can’t fault him for any of the goals. You can’t pull miracles from your hat every single time. Comparing his abilities to Roy is kind of silly. Different time, different players, different game.

        • habsfan0 says:

I’m not not a goalie..professional or otherwise. Asking me to do better is REALLY silly. LOL

          • Habfan4lfe says:

Ah, so the statistician and coach-potato fan.

Price is an excellent goalie. I’ll bet you every goalie hates that dumb shootout too. It’s not a way to decide a game. He didn’t have a chance on either goal though and we flubbed one, perhaps 2 and we got a really nice one by Pacioretty. Plekanec need less ice time. He is overworked as is Price. Martin has that great stat pad that tells him otherwise. I bet he got tic-tacs mixed up with Plekanec.

      • Mark C says:

Maybe it has more to do with the Habs not scoring?

    • Habfan4lfe says:

Liking you more and more Ian. Yep another Martin blunder tonight. Plekanec must be just toast out there. He insists on playing the guy over and over again and on the PP on the blue line. I just don’t get the guy he is so F’ing daft in his decisions.

    • Da Hema says:

Why are you dissing Betty Crocker?

  14. TheMock780 says:

Can’t win em’ all. And this loss is no way on Price. Shootouts don’t seem to be his forte though

  15. tippytoes says:

Enough with the Plekanac experiment on the point… There is a decent point man available, and probably not too expensive —his name is Brian McCabe

6’01, hard worker, team player, good point shot..

  16. twilighthours says:

In other news, perhaps palusaj is an NHLer after all.

  17. The_Franchise31 says:

I blame this on the players. With the amount of scoring chances in the first and second we should of had a bigger lead but no one can finish on this team. I don’t like JM either but you can’t blame every lose on him

    • Ian Cobb says:

Yes I can! Playing for this jerk sitting on the bench fresh while he burned out other team mates all night. Yes I blame him for implementing such crap for a game plan every night.!

  18. habsfan0 says:

I suspect Geoff Molson already has grave doubts about Habs ability to make the postseason and the attendant playoff gate revenue. Therefore, he’s allowing advertising on glass behind nets to somewhat offset this.

  19. twilighthours says:

As several have noted, if habs had a real PP this team would be 4-6 pts better. A better/different coach would definitely improve this. Or a markov. I’ll take either one right now.

  20. Jdub1985 says:

I rather see Sandusky behind the bench
That’s how cancerous JM is to this team.

  21. habsperspective says:

I found some slightly satisfying news.

Toronto fell to sixth, and now only holds a 4 point cushion.

  22. Chuck says:

I’m guessing that Lars would have better nights if he got to play with Cole and Pacioretty.

    • J.Ambrose.OBrien says:

And take DD off that line? Why, in God’s name, would anyone want to do that?! That line was dominant all night! And Eller and AK will be back together soon. Hopefully with Gionta on the wing.

      I remember Dec. 31, 1975

  23. Jdub1985 says:

I know we all can bash him on HIO
but what is the legitimate chance something will be done?

  24. RiverviewCanadien says:

I have believed in this group of players all season long. So don’t get all “internet attack mode” on me for being sarcastic. Go jump all over some else who is actually being serious, playing the blame game on the players.

Ask Ian, ask others, I refuse to believe THIS group of players have no talent. I am of the majority who don’t like how the coaching staff use the available talent.

    • RGM says:

There’s a good deal of blame to go around tonight. I am still baffled that a guy that is 3-for-19 in his career in the shootout is picked first. I like Pleks a bunch, and when I saw him go off the ice in duress in the first period I was gravely worried. He just doesn’t have what it takes in the shootout. Yet somehow he is the first choice of this coach every time, it seems.

There’s some serious misuse of talent on this team, on this I think we can agree. Markov can’t return soon enough.

GO HABS GO! 2011-12 is our year!
      RGM’s Movember page:

      • RiverviewCanadien says:

We totally agree on the misuse of talent.

The problem with Pleks, he is a coach’s dream player, does triple duty most nights. Martin is grasping at straws, but after tonight (and you bring up a good point about Pleks being in pain coming off the ice), I would never have put Plekanec as the 1st shooter, let alone top 3.

Ian is another poster who knows Pleks is over used by the coach. Not Pleks fault at all, he is tired come game end, but still such a cornerstone for this team in so many situations. Hard not to go to him, he is a “Go-To” guy.

  25. Verge says:

C’mon, Carey, win a frickin’ shootout for once. Is this the same goalie we saw in the SO competition in the All-Star game last year, blocking shots from the best? Doesn’t look like it…

What happened in the third period? Sheesh!

If you don’t have time to do it right, you don’t have time to do it twice.

  26. habsfaninboston says:

So according to JM, the plan was not to sit back in the 3rd. Having an inexperienced D-corps was his excuse.
Spacek and Gill probably out for the next game.

  27. jo_maka says:

The Count actually said: The Best Defence Is Offence……

    And I’m not even joking…..whhhhhhhhhhaaaaattttttt???????
Open-mindedness is not a skull fracture

  28. BoomBoom says:

First time I post all season. Why did I decide to post tonight? Because JM cost us the game by not going with his hot hands instead using duds Gomez and Gionta on the PP in OT. Why did he not send out DD, MaxPAc and Cole together with either Subban or Weber. That line was on all night. I always respected Martin, I mean after all you don’t coach over 1000 games in the NHL if you are not a decent coach. But personally I think his time with the Habs is done. Also, what in the blue hell is wrong with Gionta. The story on Gomez is a broken record but man Gionta has been absolutely awful.

    C’est le but!

  29. nova scotia vees says:

MAKE A FREAKIN’ SAVE NOW AND THEN WILL YA! Will someone kindly tell him to use his massive body IN FRONT OF THE CREASE, and stop trying to glove shots while back in the paint & on his knees. Bail us out just once will ya. Oh, of course..Carey had no chance on the goals. Funny how other goalies actually stop some of those great chances. Not our Franchise guy. ha, ha, ha.
We will NEVER win anything with Martin, Gauthier and Price. No Cole on the PP in overtime??? Gomez??? Lord help us all.

  30. Jdub1985 says:

    Carey Price didn’t lose this
Neither did Gomez, Gorges or any player with a CH on his chest.

This loss as always is due to irresponsible stubborn coaching that will continue to ruin Montreal until someone has enough Billy Beane to do something about it.

At this point, its not even language … anyone would do.

  31. piper says:

they are all playing scared out there other than cole. we need some muscle but wont get it and continue to be a less than average team. how long do you think it will take for markov to go down again after he comes back. ill bet the first game against boston. carey better keep his head up too.

  32. habaholic68NJ says:

Dude. Express your frustration but clean up your language. There are kids on this site.

*Listen to my instrumental tribute entitled “Habs at War” at

  33. Ian Cobb says:

Am I alone in knowing we have a jerk behind the bench!!!!

Plekanic was on the ice nearly 30 minutes. Played on every power play, and made it look like a midget team. He played on every penalty kill, played three times the shifts of any other center 5 on 5.

He played 4 min. of the overtime. And he shot first in the shoot out. Or should I say he coasted up to the goal.

He has not got a goal playing that much ice time in many games, and he is our best player. He will be burnt out for the rest of the season soon. Not his fault that he has a fool for a coach!!

  34. J.Ambrose.OBrien says:

I wonder what Budaj’s record is in the shoot-out. Because I have zero confidence in Carey when it’s one on one.

    I remember Dec. 31, 1975

  35. slapshot777 says:

All we needed tonight or for any night for that mater is a Powerplay that is working efficiently. If we would have had a decent PP then these games would not get to OT. But this defensive shell has got to go. Montreal is the only team that I see that plays this way.

To you from failing hands we throw the torch, be yours to hold it high.

  36. Everlasting1 says:

Was Cole just a case of carelessness in toppling over Enroth in his crease in OT? lol Buffalo is still smarting from their last incident 🙂

“We don’t see things as they are, but as we are.” – Anais Nin

  37. Chuck says:

My main question is with 5 seconds left in overtime, why wouldn’t you have your absolute best faceoff guy out there? Pleks was only 35% tonight.

  38. timothy13 says:

The Habs had this game. No question they deserved to win and score two points. Sorry, but Price is faulted on one or two SO goals. I mean come on, a major deke made Carey look very bad and as a young netminder he continues to make mistakes. The Habs need to compete above 500. Yes they have struggled but they need to amass points and climb in the standings. Many players know Price’s style and his SO record is not good! Wake up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  39. Jdub1985 says:

JMs retarded passive trap coaching in the 3rd cost them everything
He is a cancer, and he must be fired! This game is a quintessential example of why he is a failure.

on a side note – Carey Price for some reason is a garbage NHL SO goalie.

  40. habsfan0 says:

The book on Price on a shootout/breakaway has been out for a LONG time. Wait till Price goes down (which usually happens as soon as puck carrier crosses centre ice redline) then either deke him,or shoot upstairs.

  41. Rudy says:

You guys are going to keep the mods busy

  42. HABSsince92 says:

    1. JM sucks for having the team go in a shell.

    2. Price sucks on breakaways (but I still uv ya)

    3. How do you lose a 2-0 game on home ice with 20 minutes left to get over 500 for the first time all season?

    4. NO shots in the first 15 mins. or so of the 3rd? Really? Embarrassing.

The Scott Gomez line………..where wingers go to die.

  43. edgar_falcon says:

i couldn’t help but notice how much gionta is struggling… i think he was the one person i found myself screaming at this game he fanned on 3 shots… at least that i saw. 2 of those fans would have been easy goals… and that is causing pleks to struggle to and having moen on that line didn’t do much either… they REALLY need some of the injured players back so far they are at 73 games worth of injuries which is insane… and most of them have been to key players minus gomer and white and now spacek and engvist (sp?) got injured and you noticed it. my main question is WHY put gionta in the shootout? he was AWFUL with his shots. they would have lost either way but still…

“Don’t get me wrong, I have all the respect in the world for them. They have good players and they’re good at what they do. But playing against them is so boring. They should have to pay for coffee for our fans to help them stay awake.” Higgins (I’m paraphrasing), on the NJ Devils.

    • GomezHair says:

I agree re: Gionta in the shootout. Talk about putting a guy in a position to fail. Why not someone who had a hot hand tonight, a little jump in their game?

      end transmission.

  44. PeterD says:

Wow…what a bunch of whiners on this site.

  45. slapshot777 says:

I don’t know why, but JM must have an hardon for Pleks in the shootout. He is 1 for 14 career and 0 for 1 this season, make it 0 for 2 now. He has nothing with regards in a move. I think he panics and freezes up. That shot tonight if you want to call it that was a move lose puck and hope for the best.

Why not use Cole, he had a good night, even DD anyone but F&^king Plekanec on the shootout. Nothing against Pleks it’s just he can’t shoot sh!t in a shootout.

To you from failing hands we throw the torch, be yours to hold it high.

    • habstrinifan says:

Reason PLEKS is not good on the shootout is the same reason he is not good on the PP (which I said the minute it was suggested. Pleks is a hard industrious player with not very inventive skills. Too bad JM is making PLEKS look bad because PLEKS, used properly, is absolutely an awesome team player.

      • slapshot777 says:

Yes your right Pleks when used properly is an awesome player. It’s just a shootout is not his forte.

To you from failing hands we throw the torch, be yours to hold it high.

  46. SLYDER says:

It was more important to make sure Cole learned a lesson than to win two points – so I put Gionta in the shootout.

I felt that a two goal lead was enough to get us to overtime and get one point – so I made sure we didnt give any effort in either end for the rest of the game. Including the overtime period and any powerplays we had.

I felt we sealed the deal when we finally made it to overtime.

There were many positives and I felt our effort level over the first 40 minutes will help slightly improve our clubs performance in the future against other bubble teams.

  47. LL says:

    Blame the goalie, yawn.

How about a lousy PP, and who in their right mind would put Pleks and Gionta in the shootout, instead of Cole, PK, DD, etc.

  48. habstrinifan says:

If you were a player which would you prefer to happen in your free agent year?

Signed by your agent on a JM coached team… to play with Gomez.

    Or pass a kidney stone.

  49. CalgaryHabsFan says:

Gotta love Martin and his prevent defence.

Only thing it prevents is a win!

  50. Ian Cobb says:

Players deserve better coaching! When the coach plays the same players over and over all game, leaving fresh young legs on the bench, then plays the same players in the overtime, they have nothing left to give.

This was a coaching loss again. Plekanic played to exhaustion, and stupid Martin even put him in the shoot out.

If I was Molson, Martin would not last another day!

The first half of the game went well, but Martin is a complete fool how he uses his bench. I feel for the players, having to play for such a idiot as Martin.

  51. SeriousFan09 says:

Jacques Martin is an automatic loss in the Shootout, sends out the wrong personnel every time.

  52. twilighthours says:

Yeah, J-Mart can take some blame for this one. How about Another sad night for PP? That 4-3 to end OT was sad. They are lost out there.

  53. habsrpast says:

so Jacques, how’s the passive resistance style going?
just keep playing 1970’s hockey, and you’ll continue to lose!

    Jacques Martin= LOSER! ALWAYS!

  54. RiverviewCanadien says:

Plekanec, is he still the scapegoat? He sucks right?

Price, will he stop a shot in the SO this year?

Budaj, why didn’t he get a chance to play back to back after a strong performance?

Gionta, is he just another Gomez in a smaller package?

Pacioretty, will he ask for a trade come deadline?

Ahhhhh, who gives a s__t, obviously your Canadiens don’t.

    • DEANDALLEY says:

Yeah this game is all on Price right. Shake your head Man!

      • RiverviewCanadien says:

        Whoah, I do.

Seriously give your head a shake, can you smell the sarcasm? Pleks is my fav player (read my profile), Price has kept this team in it, he never the lost the game, it should NEVER have gone to a shootout.

Budaj SHOULD have a chance to play more games
Gionta SHOULD be scoring more goals, he plays his ass off, but comes up bupkis.
Pacioretty, that one was a joke. He is great, I just hope he stays despite JM.

Some people need to seriously lighten the frig up!

  55. DEANDALLEY says:

    Martin is WAY beyond patehtic.

When was the last time that Pleks & Gionta scored in a shootout?

I am so sick of JM coaching this team.

  57. twilighthours says:

“could care less” = you actually do care.

  58. …and on top of it I had to watch NBC VS. and Milberry. Sickening. It’s like the Canadiens weren’t even on the ice. No mention of anything that they did. Ghosts and that is what we will continue to be until we can score, hit and save shots…. Pathetic!

Promote the Youth, Support From The Veterans and Remember the Heritage!

  59. habstrinifan says:

JM you got some xplaineeeng to do!

How come Eller 11plus mins and Gomez 18 plus minutes? If it werent for Eller you wouldnt have a job today JM.

And Pleks. Come on JM… apart from being so obtus eyou cant see that he is not a PP points man… why ar eyou killing this guy. Have you noticed JM.. he has lost all zip for over a while now?

  60. Former Jets Fan says:

Doesn’t JM have Plek’s shootout stats in his notepad? Now 3 for 20 in his career. And the first shooter every time. Wouldn’t PK be a pretty obvious choice?

    • GomezHair says:

I know, right? If that’s not written there, then what you are writing is worthless. Also, maybe screw “historically”, who is playing well TONIGHT?
      end transmission.

I am really hoping JM is fired by the time I get to Montreal Friday night for the Summit!

Put Budaj in net for shootouts, yikes!

  63. Everlasting1 says:

Buffalo simply imposed their will in the third. Wow. They looked like a different team out there. Hell of an eventful game.

    Price sh-out record now 13-15.

  65. habsfaninboston says:

This game should have never gotten to a shoot out.

  66. Chuck says:

Well, Carey’s good and pissed. Hopefully that translates to the rest of the team.

Hopefully we don’t miss the playoffs by one point.

    • Shane1313 says:

      They won’t!
I think it does. Most of the guys are hard on themselves they don’t need others to be also. Price wants to win like the rest. Some emotion to carry over for next game!

      • Muckbringer says:

hey, got a point and blah, no one needs to be upset. maybe carey, but its not about this game. in game he is money, shootout, loose change. weve lost too many points on his shoot out skills. tonight he showed he knows it.

It is better to lead from behind and to put others in front, especially when you celebrate victory when nice things occur. You take the front line when there is danger. Then people will appreciate your leadership.

It’s something to work on I guess!
          Nice Mandela quote

aye, and there is always work to be done.

  67. habsperspective says:

Will the Coach Martin comments please stop. When you have Markov, Squid, AK, Gill and now Spatch missing. Thats almost 20 million of the 65 million the entire team costs. I bow to him for even being anywhere close to a 500 team.

And also, who are you going to replace him with?

    The RDS cast?

  68. Shane1313 says:

    No worries Carey!
    Relax with the “disgusting”
We played a good two periods and a bad third. 1 point, we’ll re-focus for wednesday! Can’t win em all.
I wonder if some of you are so negative in the other parts of your life. I don’t know how you get by.

  69. Muckbringer says:

great to see carey mad at himself for loosing yet another shootout. maybe now he might get better

  70. habsperspective says:
