Roberto Luongo, who was brutal in Boston, is victorious in Van and rings up his fourth shutout of the playoffs.
It was an excellent Game 5.
Maxim Lapierre scored the game’s only goal. He had three SoG and four hits in 12:39 ToI.
Looooo made 31 saves.
Canucks outhit the Bruins 47-37.
Alexander Edler had 10 of those hits.
Tim Thomas’s SO streak ended at 110:42.
Vancouver has scored six goals in the finals and are leading 3-2.
And their GWGs have been scored by Raffi Torres, Alex Burrows and Max Lapierre.
Sedins the best Vancouver brother act?
The Luongo boys.

Why cant I watch hockey these days without getting p’d off. It’s because everywhere one turns there’s a MTL GM mistake.

There should have been a way to keep Max a Hab as there should have been a way to keep Boucher a A HAB.

    • Mark C says:

That was his 3rd goal in 63 games since leaving Montreal. Are you gonna get pissed the next time Halpern wins a D-zone draw or Hammer clears the zone off the glass for another team?

      • habstrinifan says:

        No cause

a)We didnt draft Halpern and he didnt come onto the team as a youngster and give the habs world a spark.
        b) Halpern could play forever and when he retires it will still be Halpern who? But Max has talent and timing and smarts to become better than pest type player. True he needs a stiffer backbone but he will get one as he gets closer to 25 than 21.

        • Mark C says:

Are you talking about Maxim Lapierre or someone else? Closer to 25 than 21? He’s already 26. He has 12 points this year. Halpern had a 18 and 21 goal season by his age 26 season. He’s now entering his prime NHL age coming off a 14 and 12 point seasons. All this “talent and timing and smarts,” yet less than 30 points in two years, why?

Old man nobody had one fewer goal than Max had points this season (11 to 12).

They both have 17 Canadians. Whens there’s only 2 teams left there are tons of fake fans cheering for each one.

Pretty stupid to be from Quebec and like Quebec hockey players.

I wonder who Muscovites would be cheering for if it were the Capitals vs. the Canucks….hmmm…

But according to you I should care where mark recchi is from. You’re obviously very intelligent.

          • habstrinifan says:

The stooopid part was “couldnt give a damn about Canada”.

          • Duracell3 says:

habstrinifan, why exactly should I give a damn about players from Canada? I am no more connected to someone in BC or Alberta than I am to someone in Ireland or Michigan in any way. I have more shared commonality with a country an ocean and 5000 km away than I do with Manitoba. I share no more with Lucic than I do with Edler.

          • Mike D says:

            habstrinifan summed it up perfectly.

But since you decided it was a good idea to comment on my intelligence, battery man, I’ll add this little tidbit:

Your second-last sentence (“But according to you I should care where mark recchi is from”), just shows that you completely missed my very basic point….but you comment on my intelligence.

            Sure buddy.

            P.S. Energizer > Duracell

            – Honestly yours

      • Duracell3 says:

Then I think you either missed my point and took it as Canada, and not players from random parts of there, who might as well be tim thomas from whatever hell spawn he is from for all I care.

Or you genuinely think it makes as much sense for me to care as much about Greg Cambell because he is Canadian as it does for me to like Burrows, which could not be dumber.

        • Mike D says:

Dura, I really have no interest in continuing with this, so I’ll just make a few quick points:

          1) I can assure you, the only person missing any points here is you.

          2) Due to reason #1, you should refrain from making disparaging remarks about other posters’ intelligence in the future. You’ll save face that way. Side-note: Changing/re-wording a post that’s being debated makes you look even worse to those that notice.

          3) Cheering for the Nucks because they have one or two more Quebecers than the Gooins is freakin ridiculous. BTW, the B’s have more players with french names than the Nucks do, so cheer for them why don’t ya? Or maybe it’s a geographical proximity thing as you eluded to above? In that case cheer for the team that has the most players born closest to your home once you get a map and a roster list for all 30 teams. Just nonsense.

          4) For the record, I’m cheering for the Nucks simply because I HATE the Bruins. They’re our rivals so this actually makes sense. The lesser of two evils. A small part of me would also like to see the Cup come back to Canada where it belongs, but usually I couldn’t care less who wins the Cup if the Habs are eliminated. The exceptions are the Leafs, Flyers, and Bruins who are not to win under ANY circumstances.

          5) Give your head a shake.

          – Honestly yours

          • Duracell3 says:

            3) So you must be baffled at the thousands of Quebecers walking around with Tampa Bay Jerseys. Proximity has nothing to do with it, shared culture and growing up with them does. There is more commonality probably with Toews than with Neely. We don’t cheer for Patrick Marleau, it’s just a name.

Yet again, clearly intelligent. Waste of time.

It seems the only way to beat Thomas is with a tonne of traffic or some messy blue paint posting up stuff. Problem is the Canucks can’t do any of that without getting frustrated and pulled into taking penalties. Unfortunately Luongo won’t be the difference maker. If he plays his ass off they can steal one more. Maybe. Regardless of how well Lu plays the Canucks will most likely tank because they are a shallow squad far too dependent on inconsistent star players. Seeing Bruins hoisting up a Stanley Cup will be tantamount to seeing German soldiers goosestepping across Girouard Parc. I guess that just means the task of returning the Cup home to Canada will fall on our shoulders.

    From failing hands…

    • Stuck_in_To. says:

The way to beat Thomas is to get in the clear … Boston D has been stifling every series blocking everything and smothering and interfering with any rebounds. But when he gets a clear shot, how many times does it drop right beside him and he has no idea where it is? Thomas is not as good as he seems but his synergy with his teams defence is awesome. Van. needs to transition faster and get the Boston skaters out of the equation. Then they can have their way with Thomas.

take a look at this old Subban interview. It just shows how sincere and passionate this guy really is about hockey and playing in Montreal. Also its interesting to see that video then see a photo of him now and see how much mass this guy has put on in just a few years. He is a major building block on this team and I’m so happy we have a real player besides our goalie that we can be excited about.

    • _Habsoloutly_ says:

He’s a stud, and a franchise player. I still pinch myself and say “we drafted him 2nd round – 43rd overall??”. I also have to wonder about all the GM’s who passed up on this guy who had to have talks with their scouting department to ask “why wasn’t this kid on our radar again?” 😀

      • DearyLeary says:

Well, there are a bunch of second rounders making big impacts in the NHL. Generally they’re players with high upside but big question marks to their game.

A lot of the time players can’t move past those questions and the damage is mitigated by the fact that they’re only 2nd round picks. But when they turn out well it’s hard to remember the negatives.

PK had questions about his defensive game, and his discipline (still needs work from time to time). His talents are undeniable, and he’s worked hard on correcting the negatives for his game. I couldn’t be happier with our selection.

  69. 24 Cups says:

It must be a bitter pill for Vancouver to swallow when they have two Dmen out of the line-up and have to use 20 year old, Chris Tanev, instead of the $4.2M Keith Ballard.

Alas, Ballard has three more years left at the same coin. Not quite as bad as Gomez, but it’s still a dilemma.

  70. 24 Cups says:

Here’s what I’d like to see tonight (even knowing it would never happen). Just before the game starts, the ref goes to both benches and informs the coaches that any hacking, slashing or face washing after the whistle will be an automatic two minute unsportsmanship penalty. This will continue throughout the game regardless of the timing or circumstance. Maybe that way we can have a game that focuses on the real action.

Glad to here that Darche has been re-signed. I’m also happy to see he got a bit of a raise. I’d put his locker beside Scott Gomez’s, so the seven million dollar man can find out what it means to play with heart, determination and guts.

It appears my dream of seeing Jeff Carter in a Hab jersey is about to end, although I still find it difficult to believe that the Flyers will trade him. What a high price to pay for not securing a legit goalie during the past few years.

    • TomNickle says:

Luongo has never been relied on as a guy to put a team over the top or to even help them win a Championship. I could make an argument that any professional Canadian goalie would have won gold last season(and that includes the guy who got benched).

He’s been on losing teams his entire professional career until he arrived in Vancouver. He has very little experience facing the pressure of big games. In that sense, he’s not a veteran.

  74. EricInStL says:

I don’t get it, all Canadiens fans, supporters and well wishers should want the Bruins to win. Competition makes you better. A Boston win will force the Canadiens to be better.

The Canadiens must get a top player this summer. I would go see SJ and see if either Pavelski or Big Joe is available. Dammit the Canadiens need a big body in the middle…

    • SeriousFan09 says:

Pavelski is 5’11”, not big and I think he’s a big part of their planned future group. Thornton’s playoff play was better than he’s ever managed before so I would suspect he is safe, it’s more likely Marleau and Heatley are watching their backs and I’m not fans of them considering their playoff weaknessses.

      – I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.
      SF09 on Twitter

      • EricInStL says:

I figure with Couture developing fast it would make Pavelski available for the right player. Say a D man ???? Like Markov ?

I was thinking of Heatley, but who would pass to him ? But I do think if the right offer comes along Heatley can be had.

I would even see where Jeff Carter lands and try to get him

        • TomNickle says:

Carter is a Blue Jacket. Only a matter of time until that announcement is made.

Reported that Phili wants Voracek in addition to the #8 overall selection for him. I would bet that the Flyers will settle for something of little lesser value than Voracek in addition to the #8 pick. Maybe Filatov.

          • TomNickle says:

If I were them I would give strong consideration to acquiring Carter with that pick, but I certainly wouldn’t sweeten the pot. Quite the contrary actually. I would be demanding more in addition to Carter for a shot at Ryan Murphy.

          • 24 Cups says:

Why is it that when teams need to dump salary (and in theory are working from a position of weakness), they are still able to work out a good deal? Shouldn’t they be over the barrel and have to soften their demands?

I love Carter (top 30 forward) but Ryan Johansen is going to be great in a few years and the 8th pick probably means that Columbus could get either Murphy or Hamilton for the D. Those are two nice building blocks.

I still think that Carle, Meszaros or Versteeg will be part of a salary adjustment.

Hasn’t Couture been playing as a winger this year and I doubt Markov (as a pending UFA) is worth a signed roster player of Pavelski’s quality especially considering Markov’s knee issues.

I just don’t think Heatley is worth it with his attitude/commitment, Carter I don’t think can be had at a reasonable price and that contract term is hard to swallow.

          – I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.

Boston already beat us, whether they win or lose to the Canucks makes no difference to the Habs.

And I don’t think we NEED a top player. We just need our top players to be better than they have been. Although a top player would be nice, I don’t think we have the cap room to get it done.

      Pavelski is 5’11

I think he plays bigger and would be the 2nd tallest C man after Eller, I think…..

Still Pavelski would be #1 right away, Pleks #2 and Alaska boy #3

        • TomNickle says:

Pavelski’s terribly inconsistent and is no more than a #2 centreman. I would take him on my team any day. But he isn’t the big centre everyone covets though he does play bigger than he is. He is exactly the type of player that I want on this team. Difficult to move off the puck and good at maximizing offensive zone possession time. We don’t need a 6’5 250 pound centreman. Just a couple of forwards who can control board play and be effective in dirty areas.

Our new additions will be on Defense. I don’t expect a big free agent as we really don’t have anything that we can trade other than picks. This team & style is not built for goals it is built for a defnsive game. Our top six will be plek’s, cammy, Gio, AK, Gomez and Max P. All are under contract. Max I think is an RFA but he isn’t going anywhere.

Maybe someone for the bottome six. Right now we have white, Moen, Eller, DD, Darche so really there is one spot on the bottom six open. Don’t expect much of a change to this roster cause it isn’t going to happen unless there is a trade

I thought exactly the same thing the day the season ended, status quo until next summer, but then PG signed Emelin and I got all hopeful and excited. Now that PG has re-signed Darche, I’ve woken up to reality and I hate myself for ever being optimistic.

        * Ville Leino would make Sergei Samsonov look like Alex Kovalev *
