Liveblog: Tampa Bay beats Canadiens 4-2

Two goals in 21 third-period seconds:

Artturi Lehkonen’s shorthanded seeing-eye, his 17th of the season, ignited hopes of a home-team comeback.

But Yanni Gourde scored 21 seconds later to restore Tampa’s two-goal margin.

Dwight King got the Canadiens on the board halfway through the second period.

King was sprung by a Lehkonen pass and skated in alone, beating Andrei Vasilevskiy five-hole for his first goal as a Canadien.

Jubilation lasted four minutes before West Island homeboy Alex Killorn scored on a breakaway to restore Tampa’s two-goal lead.

The first period was a Nikita Kucherov Show.

Gourde opened the scoring 11:42 in. The Tampa forward cashed the off-the-crossbar rebound of a Kucherov shot.

Then with a few seconds left in the period, Kucherov tracked down a long, looping clear and beat Carey Price short-side with a wicked wrister for his 40th of the season.

Shots were 28-22 for the Canadiens.

I don’t think we need all this analyzing stuff about #27. He’s done good before. He’s scored 20 goals, he’s scored 30 goals, he has the most points in his draft class, he was in the top 20 before his injury. People were trading Max early in the year and he’s tied his career points. People were trading Gally earlier in the year and he just won the Molson Cup for the month. Chucky will be great again. Be patient.

  2. Coach K says:

Regarding the puzzle that is Alex Galchenyuk…

Q: What the heck is wrong with him!!??

The simple answer: He’s not moving his feet and by extension, is trying to do everything with his hands instead. Most likely, because it probably always worked for him.

In fairness, this is an organizational failure. He’s done this since he came into the league so the real question is: Why wasn’t it corrected earlier!? It’s not as though it happened all of a sudden.

Has he watched Plekanec and Pacioretty (the poke check twins) for too long? They rarely use their body to box out an opponent or take them them to the boards with authority and take the puck away. After all, they would have been held up as his role models. Why do they get away with it? I don’t have the answer for that.

What I do know is that a coach somewhere needs to take him aside and show him video of how he stops skating and reaches with the stick instead of moving his feet. They have to let him know in no uncertain terms that “this isn’t good enough!!”

It must be explained to him that it doesn’t mean he’s a bad player. It does mean however, that he’s a good player with a seriously bad habit; one that makes him a liability out there instead of an asset. A bad habit that needs to be turned into a good habit.

To correct him, they need to show him video of centres like Toews, Crosby and others moving their feet, getting inside position and imposing their frame on whomever has the puck. You cannot get inside position by coasting.

They need to take him out on the ice ice and actually teach him how do it right. Physically teach him HOW to win those battles. Drill into him that getting inside body position always puts you on the defensive side of the puck and if things should break down you’re at least in a position to do something about it and defend. They need to set where the expectation bar is and force him to actually practice it until it becomes his first instinct and not an afterthought. Once he “gets it” I guarantee he will become the dominant player we all thought they drafted.

Fix one bad habit and turn it into a good habit. A simple assignment for both coaches and player.

If I can teach this to 12-14 year olds then surely so-called professional coaches can teach it…

  4. CHesterfield says:

Bah… good pre season training game. Now we know #27 has to step as #1c. Danault would be awesome one #3c. Not to disparage #24, but Galchenyuk has got to now feel the hunger.

  5. PK says:

    What is wrong with Galchenyuk?

    Injury
    Attitude
    Crescent Street
Just not very good at what he does.

AG27 needs to show up in the playoffs.
Otherwise, is it time to send him packing?

Do anybody think these last three games would be worth watching?
Like the Habs are such an elite team that the could just show up throw the puck around for 60 minutes and come away with the win.
This team has to work their ass off and get some bounces to win any game. These last two and no doubt the next game was an excersize in futility. Frustrating beyond words. Clean words at the least.
I need to swipe this last three from my mind and hope the playoff switch has been flicked full on.
    See you all next Wednesday.

Hopefully, the loss of EE will not hurt too much.

I think Chucky just fell off the deep end tonight! I would not race to sign him. He’s had so many chances to prove himself. Yes he has some talent but the character & maturity depth is just not blossoming. There is way too much hope for him. Just bite the bullet and move him on…..

    • habsfan0 says:

I don’t think Galchenyuk is a bust like his Sarnia teammate, Yakupov.
He scored 30 goals last year and I think it would be somewhat premature to give up on him at this point.

  10. CJinBK says:

Short story short: Lightning needed to win, and they did.

Slightly longer story: Canadiens were either very sloppy or the pucks were very very bouncy tonight. Or both. Despite some really good pressure from the home team, and some amazing chances, especially in the third period, Vasilevskiy stood on his head while flopping around like a fish. In the last two minutes he was outstanding.

Beyond the sloppy/bouncy action from the Canadiens, the Lightning were tenacious, especially on the penalty kill. I don’t know if I’ve seen another team play the Canadiens that hard on the PK this season. (Yet it was the Canadiens who score a short-handed goal. Go figure.)

Price was good but not great tonight. As one of my fellow HI/Oers said, he gave the Montreal crowd a chance to cheer for him one last time in the regular season. I am going to assume he was playing this game somewhere between regular season and All-Star Game on the intensity scale. He wasn’t great, but he wasn’t Therrien-Bad™.

Beaulieu did not look good tonight.

Galchenyuk looked awful. His decision-making with the puck seems to be worsening, if that is even possible. Unless he lights it up in the play-offs, I (personally) don’t want to see him in the CH next season. Trade him to St Louis to underperform with Yakupov. Trade him to Las Vegas for a 2nd round pick and for Las Vegas to not take anyone useful from the Canadiens in the expansion draft. (JJ Daigneault?)

The Ones-&-Fours line was the Canadiens’ best over the whole game. Plekanec, Gallagher, and Byron were all engaged and energetic with and without the puck.

Nice to see Dwight King show those soft hands he’s known for. That’s the Dwight King I noticed on the Kings’ Cup-winning teams, and I’d like to see more of him in the playoffs.

Lindgren in at the Joe. Bring on the Rags. Goodnight Boone. Goodnight HI/O.

  11. filchock79 says:

I got to give one thing to Jason York – he’s consistent. Here it is, game 81, and the opposition still hasn’t scored a legitimate goal. After every single Tampa goal, he initially couldn’t find his tongue, then it was the usual whining: Petrie was flat-footed, Lernout was too slow, Beaulieu turned the wrong way, the Habs have injuries, blah blah blah. It’s a shame that a class act like John Bartlett has to take a seat beside the biggest whiner since Dick Irvin.

    • Mavid says:

Seriously after being saddled with the likes of Garry Galley..Jason York is a breath of fresh air..so he is a little bias toward the Habs…name me one color guy who isn’t..I would take him over some of the haters..any day..any time

Dick Irvin hasn’t whined about anything since he was broadcasting Montreal Minor Hockey from the TMR arena.

  12. berc says:

Missed the first two periods, but it seems Lernout did not distinguish himself. Why the heck is Price playing? And Markov and Radulov, for that matter? These games are like exhibition games, and they should have brought up Hudon the last couple of games.
So how many of the D who are out will be ready for the first game of the playoffs?
I am not worried about any of the Habs regulars except for Galchenyuk. He has been abominable and the team needs him to be better. Lehkonen is just getting going.
RDS guys saying their goodbyes. That sucks. They are far and away the reporting team with the most sophisticated coverage of the Habs (after HI/O, of course). TVA are all second-string clowns–no better than the Leaf-loving Anglo channels.

  13. SmartDog says:

Wouldn’t these two games be the chance for some players to focus on team play. Or step up their individual effort, to show they’re ready. Or to try new things?

Instead it looks like they’re warming up to fling the puck loosely in the direction of the opposing net, while scrambling around looking disorganized. Gotta wonder what kind of warm up this is. If they play AT ALL like this against the Rags it’ll be 4 and out.

    • DDO_Habs_Fan says:

Habs going to the ECF with the way Price is playing now. Book it. They have the Rangers number and the division sucks.

      • berc says:

I’m with you, DDO. Managed to snag a pair of tickets to first round game 7. Better things coming from Petry, Galchenyuk, Beaulieu, Radulov, Shaw once playoffs start.

      • CHesterfield says:

There is no doubt. CH is composed of players who want/will to win. Price is now determined. They lost a pre season game to a team who is do-or-die. The 3-2 marker would look better, but same thing. The 4th line played, that is what I wanted, I may know nothing

    • filchock79 says:

All they’ll have to do against the Rangers is fling the puck loosely at the net. The genius Vigneault will no doubt be starting Lundqvist, who plays the Rangers out of every game against the Habs. This is a great draw for the Canadiens.

    • I_Am_Second says:

I agree, I don’t like the look of this. Price should have been off for the last four games. He needs the rest. Many should have had a rest!

“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord”

  14. habsfan0 says:

I know these last few games are essentially meaningless and the Habs have been playing…not to get injured…but it wouldn’t behoove them, IMHO, to enter the playoffs on a 3 game losing streak.
And Detroit will be all fired up tomorrow to win the last game ever at the Joe.

  15. DDO_Habs_Fan says:

That is why I wanted to sign Kucherov to an 8 million dollar offer sheet. A phenomenal player who produces in the playoffs. I watched a replay of King’s goal. I thought it was a slow-motion replay but was actually at real speed. Lol.

  16. Stiglitz74 says:

We knew the odds weren’t in our favor with half our D core out against Tampa playing for a playoff spot. So to focus on the positives:

4th line were good again, great to see King get his long overdue first goal. He will have more jump in the playoffs I’m sure.

Most of the team were playing hard regardless of a meaningless game, as evident in Lehks, Shaw, Pleks, Gally and Radu. These guys are key pieces in deep playoff run, they need to stay in form.

The last PP was reasonable, too bad it took an extra man though.

Most important thing is this team finally has strong leadership in the way of CJ, and he knows what it takes and has got this team believing in themselves again. That is the biggest positive.

  17. StanleyHab says:
