Liveblog: Playoff Game 4 – Pacioretty propels Canadiens to Round 2

More hockey in Montreal

REALLY good time for the first playoff goal of Max Pacioretty's career.

Specifically, 19:17 of the third period in a 3-3 game.

Bring out the broom.

The Canadiens swept Tampa Bay out of the first round of the playoffs, but it wasn't easy.

After skating off to a 2-0 lead on goals by Daniel Brière and Lars Eller, the Canadiens surrendered a second-period fluke by Ondrej Palat before Brendan Gallagher restored the two-goal lead.

Then in a shade over two minutes during the third period, the resurgent visitors gtied it up, on goals by Vitcor Hedman and Tytler Johnson, and seized momentum.

The game looked destined for OT until Cedric Paquette tripped Michäel Bournival in the Canadiens zone with two minutes left.

Max pacioretty, quiet through the series to that point, beat Kristers Gudlevskis to win the game ... and the series.

Max! Finally!!

Credit Tampa Bay.

Down 3-1, the Lightning fought their way back into the game on goals by Victow Hedman and Tyler Johnson.

Not a dry seat in the house at the Bell Centre.

Then Cederic Paquette took a terrible offensive zone penalty with a shade over two minutes left.

And off passes by P.K. Subban and Thomas Vanek, Max Pacioretty squeezed the puck past Kristers Gudlevskis to win the game.

Rally snuffed

Ondrej Palat scored a shorthanded goal off a dog's breakfast scramble in Carey Price's crease, and it could have sparked a Tampa Bay comeback.

It didn't.

After scoring, the Lightning went more than 10 minutes without getting another SoG.

And Brendan Gallagher converte a sweet Tomas Plekanec pass to end Anders Lindback's night in the TB net.

Kristers Gudlevskis came on and made some nice stops at the Canadiens held a 14-7 shot advantage, 29-13 on the game.

A perfect period?

Pretty darn close.

The Canadiens outshot Tampa Bay 15-6, dominated in all three zones and got goals from Daniel Brière and Lars Eller.

Is 2-0 the most dangerous lead?

We'll see.

It beats 0-2 when you're 0-3.

Broom at the ready

It's been 21 years since your Montreal Canadiens held a 3-0 lead in a playoff series.

On May 8, 1993 in Buffalo, the Canadiens edged the Sabres 4-3 – that was the final score of each game in the series – to sweep and move on to the Eastern Conference final.

Will Tampa Bay be swept out of the 2014 postseason?

It won't be easy.

The Lightning played their best game of the series Sunday night. And their disallowed goal will be the subject of sports bar debates for years to come.

Nor will it be easy, however, for the visitors to stay alive in the frenzied postseason atmosphere of the Bell Centre.

The Canadiens are playing superb hockey. Coach Michel Therrien is getting smart, disciplined play from four forward lines, P.K. Subban is turning into a postseason beast and Carey Price is ... Carey Price.

On the other hand, we have the Chris Lee factor.

The Canadiens have lost the last five games in which they've drawn Lee as a ref. Since 2011, they are 3-12 in with this particular zebra.

• Wasn't that Mikael Granlund goal a beauty?

  1. jimmy shaker says:

WOW the HNIC crew hates Montreal….Did anyone actually see the puck across the line on the bolts first goal? It must have, but I still never saw conclusive evidence to prove it.

    Shaker out!

  2. habsfan0 says:

Guess which ref called the penalty on Paquette with about 2 minutes left?
    The vampire himself.
    So much for conspiracy theories.

  4. PrimeTime says:

I wonder if Halak watched the game?

  5. Captain aHab says:

Wow Doughty looks injured….that would be a big blow.

Me skull and crossbones arn’t the only thing I plan on raisin’ tonight.

  6. twilighthours says:

A team sweeps its opponent and significantly outplays it for 12 of 13 periods. And still we’ve got a lot of complaints to offer.

I think I’ll just enjoy this win.

    • The Jackal says:

Let’s savour it, the next round will be a gruelling and brutish, unless the Wings pull off the upset. I’m so impressed with this team right now. Anyone detracting from this series win is not getting the full picture, the way we played… Bishop would have stopped a few more goals, maybe he would not have, how can we know for sure? But man, we played real good hockey and were solid defensively, I say we still win with Bishop in nets, and it’s not like Lindback was horrible either.

      Hockey sine stercore tauri.

  7. habsfan0 says:

The Habs have now won 7 straight.

Is MT still the Habs coach?

  8. JohnBellyful says:

Just three two more sweeps to the Stanley Cup final!

  9. PrimeTime says:

    BaHaHa to all the fatalists.

  10. habs001 says:

Give the team credit for winning and lets see who the Habs play next….The key to playoff success in a cap league is to have some of your lower payed players play like high paid players…Too bad that nonE of the Habs D in the 22-24 age group have been developed into much better players than their salary at this time…

  11. BigB says:

LOVE our team!!!!!!!!!! Great job boyz!

On a side note, I happened to watch that low character called Cherry right after the game….I’m sorry for my fellow fans who live in Canada and are subject to his one-sided BS.

    Habs forever!

  12. Chrisadiens says:

Outside of the Stamkos sucker punch and some acts by Gudas, I’d like to tip my hat to a classy organization in Tampa. A well fought series and they didn’t go down without a fight. Well done guys.

    • Habitoba says:

Agreed. Guys getting injured by accidents, part of the game. Guys getting injured by goonery, bad for the game, fans, etc. Outcome aside, this was a great series for that.

  13. AllHailTheFlower says:

An open letter to every fan at the Bell Centre who feels the need to sing that stupid “Ole” song:

    Don’t. Just…don’t. Idiots.

  14. DipsyDoodler says:

Callahan (0 points, -2) for St.Louis, not so good.

    Moving. Forward.

  15. mdp2011 says:

So what the heck are we going to do for the next 10 days?

  16. Max says:

Lol “Cedric Pack It”.Gonna make the habs pay for not drafting your patheticness? Go and have a nice summer with your bum buddy,50 year old looking Stamkos. Loser. Suck it dude.

  17. Habitant in Surrey says:

…from here on We are going up with PHYSICAL teams

…hard to say if a week and a half takes Our speed mental edge away, but it will help Us rest for the wars ahead

…hope the Wings go down swinging and injure some Beans before they do

…soft Beans taste a little sweeter

  18. Phil C says:

So while it’s the Hunger Games on ice out West, the Habs can enjoy some therapy days and rub downs, maybe get back into the gym for bit. They could even join their buddies Dion, Phil, and James for a quick round of golf just to keep it light.

  19. habsfan0 says:

I think Cedric Paquette finally has figured out why the Habs didn’t draft him.

  20. NCRhabsfan says:

Worst. Refereeing. Ever. The NHL should ban those guys from the league. Until the league cleans up completely incompetatnt refereeing like that it is destined to remain a minor league compared to MLB, the NFL and the NBA.

Any Habs fan that does the ole ole chant with more than 15 seconds left in the third period and less than at least a two goal lead should be ejected from the building. The comeback was so predictable once the morons started singing. Just. Plain. Stupid. I mean really, why would you egg the other team on?

Great win for the Habs. So great to see the lines that were so quiet all year playing such a gigantic role in the play-offs. Lets hope they can keep it up in the next round.

    • The Jackal says:

Let the fans sing and chant what they want, it’s the joy of being at a home game. Ole ole ole is not na na na hey hey goodbye, it’s just a chant.

The reffing…. It’s pretty crappy, but I think both teams were hurt and helped by it this series to an extent. The most egregious transgressions though are the ones the zebras don’t call against the Bruins. It’s disgusting to see how much shit they get away with.

      Hockey sine stercore tauri.

      • dr. schmutzdeker says:

I must say (w\o seeing stats) that I have never heard a chant or song that has been used so effectively to ensure that a lead heldby the home team evaporates.

    • Loop_Garoo says:

You have way to many periods in the first three words there.

  21. CHasman says:

Another very exciting game. We gave up two bad goals and Vanek had his worst game as a Hab but aside from that a great game by all. (Well maybe Prusty was fighting the puck some but his line mate Gallagher was a tenacious fury who made up for him.)
Why didn’t Bourque play like this all year, hitting, hustling, making things happen, just awesome.
The team played this series to win and they really worked hard. Great to watch.

  22. JUST ME says:

Can`t say enough about the input from Briere,Bourque,Eller and warrior Gallagher.
We just swept a team that got 101 pts this season. They had the lead for a total of 3 minutes 32 seconds during round 1. Need we say more ?

  23. UKRAINIANhab says:

Plekanec should win the Selke 20 times over.

Dah, No one stopping the Habs, no one. Not kidding, No one.

  24. Marc10 says:

Callaghan just lost a lot of money. Might be going back to NYR for a much cheaper price tag.

Cooper lost the series by keeping Lindback in when he had a better goalie on the bench. That’s going to hurt for a while.

  25. The Jackal says:

PS – you’re all welcome, I recused myself from watching the entire game because when I didn’t watch a period, we tended to score goals, so I said: screw it, I’m taking one for the team.

And thanks Matty, for being there and keeping your streak alive at the Bell!

    Hockey sine stercore tauri.

  26. (broken stick in the slot) Steven Stamkos, that’s Hockey Karma dude!

  27. duffy says:

The irony of this is the Leafs put Bishop out of action , thanks Leafs. But I still hate your team !!!

  28. dhenry1234 says:

Looking forward to the break. I don’t have to hear that idiot Glen Healey for an entire week!!

  29. JohnBellyful says:

That penalty at the end is only ‘strange’ because of all the fouls that didn’t get called. If they had, the tripping call would never be called into question.
Players are constantly being told to play 60 minutes. Why do so many refs not even come close to putting in a solid 60 minutes? Are they so winded by the third period they haven’t the strength to blow the whistle?

  30. trennyl says:

That is the first one, we beat a good team, now we have to beat a better team. 4 lines rolling is the best. We have 4 lines rolling. Stay healthy and speedy and we can go at least one more round.

  31. 24AW says:

Glad they won the game and the series they deserved it. moving on, things will be tougher in the games ahead especially should they play Boston. First thing comes to mind, injury prone like the Ottawa series last year, hope it doesn’t happen and they win the 2nd round. good team effort all 4-Games.

    And lo, the storm abated and the lightning flickered into ash;
Cold were the hearts of the beaten foe.
The first test of the mettle of the Ste-Flanelle had been met
And the Great City did celebrate,
Yet their thoughts were ever on their hated rivals.

So sayeth the Book of Hab

  33. CH Marshall says:

on another note.. nice looking ladies there out west

  34. CH Marshall says:

Habs Bruiins series would be war. No doubt about it

  35. db says:

Imagine how nervous LA fans are? They’ve been blown out! Habs are playing well, ticket to the next round already booked…

  36. The Jackal says:

    Habs were great this series.
Tampa was also good and the sweep obscures how close they played us, at least for stretches – they certainly made every game, except game 2, interesting and close.
Great to see that kind of skilled, skating hockey rather than the crap goonfest that they call “playoff” hockey in certain circles.

We definitely caught a few break, but what winning team does not? We were the better team for the majority of the time, shut down TB, got better goaltending, and got scoring from all lines. We dodged a couple of bullets in terms of some calls, but nothing really controversial – definitely nothing close to the Sens’ soccer goal last year. On the flip side, the refs let TB off with a lot and from what I saw, Bourque should have had a goal on that delayed penalty last game since no TB player touched the puck – so it’s not like TB didn’t catch any breaks in terms of calls as well.

Really good to see the Habs win it after blowing a lead in the third too, it shows killer instinct and calmness. We didn’t panic in game 1 and we didn’t panic today. The rest is well-deserved and will help out a lot in terms of getting lots of practice time as well as some time convalesce.

    Hockey sine stercore tauri.

  37. w.p.d says:

Now, for more important matters, where can we order 20 steel jock straps for the Bruins series ?

  38. joeybarrie says:

how many takers on a bet for Tampa in 7 now???
So glad this team does better against adversity than some fans do….

    Go Habs Go.

  39. CH Marshall says:

also think coaches are asking Vanek to play a higher position in the ozone as a sort of shadow sniper or something

  40. Habitant in Surrey says:

…I always tolerated McLean and Cherry on Coach’s Corner despite the one-sided bias

…because I always considered it comedy and a freak show that helps Us taking things too seriously

…but increasingly they are imploding …they are not funny anymore

    • JohnBellyful says:

What?! You don’t recognize the genius that is Cherry? An intellect so profound his words of wisdom need to be replayed again and again for all the doubting Thomases.

  41. Caesar is along for the ride for 25 says:

could not be happier about the outcome of this game. For such a short series the refs really took center stage. Oh yeah and Gally too!!! The smiling assassin, the honey badger, the little ball of great!

  42. CH Marshall says:

wouldn’t be surprised if Vanek is playing with wonky groin or knee

  43. Captain aHab says:

    Boston up 3-0.

  45. w.p.d says:

Vanek was AWOL for most of this series, particularly the games in Montreal. He almost appeared disinterested tonight. Had flashbacks to the Kovalev giveaway near the end.

  46. B says:

Wow, Halifax has tied it up. 5-5 late in the 3rd.

    –Go Habs Go!–

  47. DDO_Habs_Fan says:

Geezus I can’t believe they almost blew that one. Three stupid-stupid-stupid mistakes. I was surprised MT didn’t call a timeout after the second goal as the Habs were playing dopey. Thankfully the refs finally called a penalty on the Bolts and Max scoring.

Anyway, great job by MB, MT and the coaching staff. Young players aside, the team has improved overall from last year. Bring on the Bruins…

  48. trolly says:

    Clean out your locker Callahan!

  49. JohnBellyful says:

    I missed the first period.

  59. UKRAINIANhab says:

GO HABS GO. habs did not blow it!! I AM not moving to Russia ! If habs lose in round 2 Ill move to Russia!!!!! We got this

  60. Mondou6 says:

I think the break will be good for us. We’re going to be at Boston to start, so we just need to win one of the first two to make it a series.

Even if we’re rusty in Game 1, the rest will hopefully pay off later in the series.

  66. Routs says:

Problem is all we’ll hear now is how the refs gave the Habs the game with that penalty call. It will now suddenly be a “questionable” call.

    • kempie says:

Yes, it was all because of the officials. All four games in a row. How about “don’t play yourself into a hole so deep that one call or PP or goal sends your team to the tee box?”

You know that, when it’s against the Habs & we complain, we’re whining crybabies but when it goes the other way it’s a national catastrophe.

  67. Habitant in Surrey says:

    …Capt. Obvious Cherry
