Liveblog: Game 9 – First losing streak of the young season

Oilers earn 4-3 win

Both teams have injuries.

Both teams have young and/or inexperienced players in the lineup.

But Edmonton, completing a six-game road trip, wanted it more than your Montreal Canadiens, who dropped a second consecutive game for the first time in the young season.

After Tomas Plekanec and Brendan Gallagher staked the home team to a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes, the visitors scored four unanswered goals to take control.

Ales Hemsky got Edmonton on the board 13 minutes into the middle period, and Ladislav Smid made it 2-2less than three minutes later.

The visitors took control on third period goals by Jeff Petry and Ryan Jones. With Carey Price pulled for a sixth attacker, Brian Gionta tipped one past Devan Dubnyk with a second left on the clock.

Each team had 32 shots on goal.

Oilers take control

Goals by Jeff Petry and Ryan Jones completed Edmonton's comeback from a 2-0 deficit.

With Carey Price on the bench and one second left on the clock, Brian Gionta made it 4-3.

Deuces wild

Two periods, two goals for each team.

Ales Hemsky was left unattended in the slot for a rising wrister to beat Carey Price and get Edmonton on the board almost 13 minutes into the period.

Less than two minutes later, Ladislav Smid jumped on a rebound and had an open net to tie things up.

The Oilers had a 16-11 shot advantage.

The Canadiens have been outscored 9-6 in second periods this season.

Late explosion

For almost 17 minutes, it was a scoreless and evenly played first period.

Then, on the Canadiens' second power play, Tomas Plekanec one-timed an Andrei Markov pass past Edmonton goaltender Devan Dubnyk for his fourth goal of the season.

Not two minutes later, Brendan Gallagher came roaring off the Canadiens bench on a line change, stole the puck and wristed his fifth past Dubnyk.

Interesting "fight" at the end of the period: Travis Moen and hulking Luke Gadzic (who had tried to goon Gallagher) squared off and removed their helmets – at which point the linesmen skated right in to halt the proceedings.

Crowd hated it, but it's smart officiating at a time when head injuries are drawing a lot of attention.

Canadiens outshot the Oilers 14-8 and won an astonishing 15 of 18 faceoffs.

Banged-up Canadiens host Oilers

Fewer than 10 games into the 2013-'14 season, your Montreal Canadiens have been decimated by injuries.

Defencemen Alexei Emelin, Douglas Murray and David Drewiske haven't played a game this season.

Top scorer Max Pacioretty is out, as are Brandon Prust, Daniel Brière and George Parros.

The D has been limping along with ancient Francis Bouillon playing more than 16 minutes per game and rookie Jarred Tinordi trying to keep up with NHL speed and skill.

Forwards Michael Blunden and Patrick Holland have been recalled from the woeful Hamilton Bulldogs.

Tuesday's visitors will be looking to avenge a 4-1 defeat the Canadiens inflicted on them in Edmonton 12 days ago, but the Oilers have their own injury issues. Sam Gagner and Taylor Hall are out.

MB must be feeling the heat. C’mon MB show us that you’re better than the goat…I’m starting to lose faith.

  2. CHicoHab says:

If you can’t win games at home against inferior teams will bite you later. They sucked tonite that’s it that’s all.

  3. Ozmodiar says:

    The oilers have 7 injured!

  4. PrimeTime says:

The Oil were the better Jr team tonite.

  6. RockinRey says:

Opportunity lost. I know there is parity in the league but that is a lousy effort against a team that has so many young players.

  7. Sal from the Hammer says:

They have, since JM, consistently not been able to finish teams when they have them down…

  8. twilighthours says:

It must be tough to be a montreal season ticket holder. First, you’ve got shell out zillions of dollars for them. Then, the team consistently stinks it up on home ice.

  9. hamiltonbulldogs says:

Hey … Can’t blame DD .., if someone is stupid enough to over pay for his services … He is the luckiest guy in the world … He won the lottery … Nice to see we take care of our French guys .. Even if they are useless … Hope the media is happy !!!! As long as the media is happy …. Who cares if we win !!!

    • Hstands4Hockey says:

So true. Habs priority #1 is getting French Speaking guys to help promote 24CH. Who needs to win hockey games?

Rule #76: No Excuses, Play Like a Champion!

    • ffenliv says:

I can’t blame him for being the tool that nature made him, but I can wish him off the team.

  10. The Jackal says:

So what if we lose tonight?
    Every team loses, even consecutively.
Yeah, the effort may have been bad at times, but you can’t win ’em all.
We’ve had some bad injury luck but have looked solid most of the time.

We have a great young core of players that will anchor the team, and our veterans have done a good job thus far. Yeah, we are far from elite, but we have the right building blocks. Can’t say MB is perfect, and then again, no GM is, but he has done more good than bad. DD looks to be the only actual wart on his record, and at least we can rest easy that he knows how to improve the team and what we need. Of course, patience is a virtue that many fans lack, but just try to keep a good perspective. We may lose to the Oilers, but they are in a way worse situation, despite getting tons of first overall picks.

Don’t hang yourselves over a few bad games and bad luck.

    Hockey sine stercore tauri.

  11. NightRyder says:

Any of you sabremetric freaks out there have some stats on ‘leads lost?’

I can’t tell you how many times I’m headed home from work and the Habs are leading, only to get home and they’ve blown it.

Hardly scientific analysis, to be sure. But I’ve never been a fan of Therrien because of the way his teams play once they get the lead. It would be interesting to see some numbers in that vein.

And I’m still waiting for Price to be the guy who consistently makes that “one big save” that keeps the other team at bay when his team has the lead.

    • The Jackal says:

“And I’m still waiting for Price to be the guy who consistently makes that “one big save” that keeps the other team at bay when his team has the lead.”

Looks like you haven’t watched the previous games we’ve played this year.

      Hockey sine stercore tauri.

    • Mondou6 says:

I don’t think it’s Therrien. Other teams goon it up once we get a lead, and we can’t answer.

Look at how much Price was crashed lately.

Look at Gionta getting boarded. What’s our answer, Moen? Everyone else is 5’5″.

    • olematelot says:

To point the finger at Price is just lame.

  12. CalgaryHab says:

Incredibly soft game – even by smurf standards

  13. CHicoHab says:

The leafs are horrible. Getting what right??

  14. RockinRey says:

I dont care about injuries. Every team has injuries . This team is just not that good. Ship out DD and Gio for some picks

  15. hamiltonbulldogs says:

I watched DD in Hamilton … He was useless here too!!!

  16. twilighthours says:

Now that’s a bad team. And I’m not talking bout no oilers!

  17. habsfan0 says:

    Joe Bowen was insufferable tonight.
    Even more so than usual.

  18. CHicoHab says:

Let’s give Carey a rest. Bring in Bood-eye Thursday and let Carey swim with the Sharks Saturday.

  19. hamiltonbulldogs says:

I’m a Habs fan … It kills me to see the leafs are getting it right !!!

    • Mattyleg says:

I couldn’t give two craps about what the Leafs are doing.

      —Hope Springs Eternal—

      • The Jackal says:

And I’d advise whoever thinks that the “leafs are getting it right” re-evaluates what makes a good hockey team. Getting out-possessed and out-shot constantly does not a good team make. Jeez. Some people…

        Hockey sine stercore tauri.

  20. durocher says:

EDM has been physical with MTL and it’s been effective; we have no response

    • Mondou6 says:

      I agree…

And it was the exact same thing against Columbus. We go up 2-0, dominating with speed, then suddenly the other team turns physical on us, pushes us around, crashes Price, starts fights.

We can’t answer, get beat up all over the ice, and boom, it’s 2-2.

We managed to pull it out against Columbus, but this was a carbon copy. We go ahead, but we have zero answer for physical bullying play.

  21. Mattyleg says:

Oil doing a good job at keeping us on the periphery.

    —Hope Springs Eternal—

  22. Ozmodiar says:

Go easy on DD, boys and girls. He did have a shot on goal tonight. Really, I swear. Saw it with me own two eyes!

Just like I said a hour before game habs will lose as they can’t play as a team and quit when they lead

  25. slapshot777 says:

They can’t win a puck battle to save their lives

  26. hamiltonbulldogs says:

Habsfan1144 … GMs are the main reason we are in the state we are in .., and based on the DD signing -MB is no different !!!

  27. RockinRey says:

Apparently Gio and Pleky have 4 and 5 shots on goal respectively? Huh?

  28. hamiltonbulldogs says:

Gorges is hockey’s version of Bambie

  29. Adidess says:

Gorges, my Lord! How/when did he become so useless!?

  30. Simpsy33 says:

Time to get rid of DD. Only one line is playing tonight !

  31. Habilis says:

It may be a very long upcoming month and a half for this team. The reinforcements will surely help, but if we keep playing like this… We could do a lot of damage to our playoff chances before then. Not good.

  32. kalevine says:

when habs get a 2 goal lead I foolishly assume they’ll win. Do they feel the same way?

  33. hamiltonbulldogs says:

Houle + Gainey + Gauthier = a massive mess for MB

  34. Storman says:

When PK and Price play average, our chances of winning drop considerably,, team misses Prust and Pacioretty big time..

  35. Ozmodiar says:

Don’t worry, folks. Have faith in the oil tank.

  36. The Jackal says:

Ah great, the loss is not even a lock yet but this place is already unbearable.

    Hockey sine stercore tauri.

  37. duffy says:

MT looks like he wants to cry in the captains lap.

  38. habsfan0 says:

Lars Eller’s pre-game comments about the Oilers playing like a junior team sort of reminds me of George “Punch” Imlach’s description of Rogatien Vachon as being a “Junior B” goalie when he was facing the Leafs in the ’67 Final.

    Very ill advised.

We will better against Pitt, Boston, Ottawa, Wahington,Buffalo, Detroit, Chicago, San Jose. It gets easier. No?

  41. Physical shmisical, it doesn’t matter if we can’t keep the other team off the scorecard…. Tank! and get some more time to rebuild and get MT outta there… Damn, I love the Habs, but I’m hattin’ what I’ve been seeing the last decade…

  42. SportsFan31 says:

    Ugh they scored again.

  43. hamiltonbulldogs says:

True HAB fan … But I gotta admit this team is a long way away!!! … Our GM was desperate signing Daniel … And really dumb signing DD

  44. adadi says:

Three good games by Price but looking like he is not into the game tonight. Hopefully this is a one off.

  45. Sal from the Hammer says:

Here comes the slide. At least it’s early in the season. Too many injuries. Too hard to win in this league with one line.

  46. Adidess says:

A let down at 2-0, followed by a complete capitulation. Very frustrating!

  47. Chuck says:

Price looked upset at the face full of snow.

  48. Hstands4Hockey says:

Just turned the game off – absolutely disgusted by the team’s effort tonight. Never seen a softer team in my life – how is DD still in the NHL? Montreal is in HUGE trouble and better hope they can get a few wins over the next month until they get some guys back – season could be over by December 1.

Rule #76: No Excuses, Play Like a Champion!

    • habsfan1144 says:

      Montreal a soft team???

What… DD, Boulion, Diaz on the boards doesn’t give you a warm sensation?

HOW MANY GMs are we going to go through before SOMEONE gets it!

      • Hstands4Hockey says:

With PacMan, Prust, Parros, Emelin and Murray/Tinordi they are at least average. Right now is just a shit show of watching guys fall down and get pushed off the puck. Looks like men against boys (and kind of is).

Rule #76: No Excuses, Play Like a Champion!

  49. SportsFan31 says:

Uh oh. We’re gonna need some quick goals here to win. GO HABS!

  50. Storman says:

PK -2 with a turnover that that led to a penalty that turned this game around for Oilers,, now he is only worth 7.9 million a year..

  51. habs1992 says:

So a junior team beat us. HAHAHAHAAHAHAH

    I support Carey Price

  53. kalevine says:

wow plekanec pathetic on both of the last 2 goals

  54. crabvader says:

Habs falling all over the place, not throwing any hits whatsoever… MAN is it gonna feel good to have Parros, Prust and Murray in the lineup… and if Tinordi can tweak his game, we’re actually going to have a physical aspect to our game.

This looks like the year we had a bunch of small fries.

    • habsfan1144 says:

Hey Bergevin…is this considered a “character” loss?

Let me help you with your evaluation …WE SUCK!

But olease feel free to to extended Boullion, Diaz and DD again while you are at it.

Team blows another lead against a pretty poor team?

Only Anahiem and San Jose coming in….I hope we don’t get embarrassed too badly?

  55. AH says:

Hell of an effort after the Nashville game.

  56. CHicoHab says:

Reality check. This team is poor.

  57. hamiltonbulldogs says:

Don’t worry guys the 3.5 million dollar a year guy will save the day … DD 🙂

  58. 123456 says:

    defense anyone?

  59. ffenliv says:

I normally hold people who complain about officiating in pretty low regard, particularly the people who come here game after game and tell us how the Habs would have won if it weren’t for the conspiracy.

Tonight, though, I feel like the refs blew some calls in the second that really would have set this game down a different path.

  60. Prairienewf says:

Marinaro will crucify em. And rightly do.

  61. RockinRey says:

The problem is the Habs rely too much on PK an Markov and they are going to burn out. That and too many guys who’s talent has been overestimated and a one line threat.

Eller is eating his words now.

  62. Et le but says:

    Not pretty…need one quick here

  63. frontenac1 says:

Huh? Getting smoked by the softest team in the West? Really?

  64. Samovich says:

Georges, Diaz, Gionta and DD Horrible, Scary and Slow respectively

  65. Storman says:

Wow even Price has joined the shit the bed parade

  66. PrimeTime says:

Price was looking for an interference call.

    0 physical play.

What more do you need to say?

  68. Adidess says:

    Pricey, we needed you there!

  69. Habbu says:

4 straight with little or no resistance……

  70. adadi says:

    Price looks terrible tonight?

  71. AH says:

    What a frickin’ mess!!!!!

  72. Grimmly says:

Finally, one goal that is actually Prices fault 🙁

  73. hamiltonbulldogs says:

No we are injured because guys like DB and MP are made of glass.
