Liveblog: Game 82 – Gionta’s penalty-shot goal in OT beats Rangers

Canadiens still alive for home ice

Brian Gionta's penalty shot beat Cam Talbot in Overtime for the only goal of the game.

Carey Price made 41 saves for his sixth shutout of the season.

The win moved the Canadiens a point ahead of Tampa Bay, which will finish its regular season in Washington on Sunday afternoon.

The Canadiens finished their regular season with 100 points.

How great is that?

In a pre-game ceremony, Brian Gionta was honoured as the Canadiens' unsung hero this season.

Star singing.

Gionta's penalty-shot goal in Overtime moved the CH past Tampa Bay into second place in the Atlantic Division.

Still alive

By gaining a point, the Canadiens are still alive for home ice in the playoffs.

On to OT.

Still goose eggs

The Canadiens haven't scored since the third period in Chicago Wednesday night.

Nor have they come particularly close through 40 minutes against Cam Talbot.

The Rangers goaltender has made 16 saves.

Carey Price has made 30 ... and that doesn't include the shot that Raphael Diaz rattled off both goalposts.

Canadiens have not scored at the Bell Centre in 104:20.

Another slow start

As was the case against the Islanders Thursday night, the Canadiens were badly outshot: 9-1 through nine minutes.

Final margin was 14-5, and Carey Price had to make several big stops, notably on Derick Brassard, alone in the slot to fire off a laser.

The period included a lively gight. After Derek Dorsett low-bridged David Desharnais, Francis Bouillon dropped 'em and did well against the Rangers tough guy.

Regular season wraps up

The Rangers are at the Bell Centre to bring the curtain down on a regular season that began Oct. 1 – with a 4-3 loss to those other blueshirts, the ones who'll be on the outside looking in ... again ... when the playoffs begin.

The Canadiens need a win and a Tampa Bay loss in Washington on Sunday to finish second in the Atlantic Division, which will mean home-ice advantage in their playoff series with the Lightning. It would also be nice to avoid ending the season with a three-game losing streak.

"We won't know who will have home-ice advantage until Sunday night, but I can already predict what the answers will be," Michel Therrien said after practice Friday – before Tampa Bay beat Columbus to jump a point ahead of the Canadiens. "The team that has it will say they're really happy, and the team that doesn't will say it's not important. That's what will happen Sunday, or Monday when you see me, so I beat you by 72 hours."

Both previous games against the Rangers were shutouts. Tomas Plekanec and Alex Galchenyuk scored and Peter Budaj made 27 saves at Madison Square Garden Oct. 28. Cam Talbot made 22 stops and Ryan Callahan scored the only goal of the game at the Bell Centre Nov. 16.

• Birthday shout-out to my great and good friend Patrick V. Hickey. I'll not disclose the precise age of The Gazette's veteran hockey writer except to say it corresponds to a year when the Canadiens missed the playoffs.

You’re the Captain, you deserve no particular recognition for playing hard, other than official trophies such as Maurice Richard, Hart, etc.

  40. Un Canadien errant says:

I’m not over the moon about Dustin Tokarski’s contract extension, since I’m not convinced that he’ll play any significant role in the Canadiens’ plans over the next few years, but it is positive news. It’s another case of good asset management, of players being drafted or acquired that are developed and/or retained, as opposed to past players like Dominic Moore who were traded for at relatively high cost but then allowed to leave for nothing in return.

We have a goalie who will play next season for the Bulldogs, and who may take another step in his progression, or top out there, but he’s under contract, he’s of value to the team, whether as a placeholder until Zachary Fucale graduates to the AHL, as a backup to Carey Price, or as a trading chip.

My sources are unreliable, but their info is fascinating.–Woody Paige

    • This sounds crazy coming from Carey’s biggest fan but I’m excited to see Fucale succeed and then to see what we can get for Carey Price in a trade 5-8 years from now. 😆

Re: MA Fleury. Remember that cup drive? I think it was Talbot that revved Fleury up before each game. Goalies can be notoriously flaky. Since Talbot was traded it seems Fleury cracks under pressure. It shouldn’t be that way, but athletes are human and we all know some weak emotional humans (who can be incredible in some circumstances). I don’t think Patrick will be letting go of Talbot anytime soon, but Bylsma should be looking for some inspirational help for Fleury.

Nice piece on Dominic Moore the anti-Pouliot, Mr Average from the neck down, incredibly driven and cerebral hockey player. One of my faves as a Hab.

Unless he’s steadily miraculous in these playoffs, I think it’s a foregone conclusion that the Pens will be shopping for a goalie this summer. Enjoying the Masters. The official sign that spring has arrived. Hockey playoffs are the confirmation.

Looking forward to the game tonight. I know he’s not a crowd favorite, but I’d like to see Blunden have a solid game tonight. We are at our best when we are skating and rolling four lines. My concern remains our secondary scoring. Although, with the scratches NY has announced for tonight, it should be open for business, our second and third lines need to be much better. It’s a given that the first line is going to draw the opposition’s top defensive unit, the 2nd and 3rd unit have to capitalize.

    • UKRAINIANhab says:

Too bad about DeLeat eh. Idk if you saw me bragging below but i picked Bjorn in the pool at work : ). Blunden needs to use his size and frame if he wants to make the NHL full time. Hopefully, he has a great game hitting everyone. Enjoy the golf.

      • CJ says:

DeLaet learned a lot this week. He’s only going to get better. He had some bad luck, but kept plugging along.

Regarding Blunden, he’s a great skater. I think he will find success tonight. In his defence, when he’s come up in the past the fourth line has been a collection of missing parts. Holland, St.Pierre……

It’s interesting how the Rangers are basically the same as the Habs this year in terms of their overall status and record. The main difference being that New York started the season with a nine game road trip (3-6). If St Louis, Richards and Nash get off their butts, the Rangers could go to the conference final. Of course that’s a pretty big if.

    • ABHabsfan says:

Road team need only get a split of the first 2, whereas the home team needs to win both just to hold their “advantage”. I don’t mind being the road team for the first round, pressure firmly on the home team. Going on the road to start can also being galvanizing for the team to pull together so that’s a plus.
In the event of a game 7 it is good to have the last change but, at risk of jinxing out boys, I don’t think this goes 7.
