Liveblog: Game 8: Four-game win streak ends with 2-1 loss to Nashville

GallagherNashville

Winning streak ends

Nashville outshot the Canadiens 37-29 en route to an entertaining 2-1 win.

Goals by Shea Weber, during a first period power play, and Brendan Gallagher's fourth, in the second period, set up a tense final 20 minutes.

Lars Eller's goal, early in the third, was disallowed, and the teams settled down into a tight-checking battle that looked destined for OT.

But a poor clear by Travis Moen set off a sequence that ended with rookie defenceman Seth Jones driving toward the net and beating Carey Price.

The Canadiens goaltender was heroic in defeat, with 35 saves.

Pekka Rinne made 28 stops for Nashville.

The Canadiens lost Daniel Briere and Brandon Prust to injuries.

Jones wins it

With a nifty toe drag and a sweet shot, highly heralded rookie Seth Jones scored the only goal of the third period to break a 1-1 tie.

The winning goal came with 87 seconds left and the game headed for OT.

Should be a dandy third

Brendan Gallagher's fourth of the young season was the second period's only goal.

Gallagher benefited from some intense close-in work by Lars Eller and Michaël Bournival.

The latter finds himself on a line with David Desharnais and Rene Bourque after a hard check knocked Daniel Brière out of the game.

Nashville outshot the Canadiens 16-11 during the period.

Carey Price has faced 30 shots through 40 minutes.

Predatory period

Nashville had the home team on its heels for most of the game's first 20 minutes.

Shea Weber banked a shot in off Josh Gorges during a power play for the only goal thus far.

It was Nashville's 10th shot of the game. At that point, 12:31 in, the Canadiens had one shot on massive Pekka Rinne.

Shot totals for the period: Nashville 14 - Canadiens 6

Great young Dmen ... on both teams

P.K. Subban leads NHL defencemen in scoring and is seventh – behind six forwards – in the overall points race.

You won't find Seth Jones' name among the league leaders. Nashville's first choice, fourth overall, in the 2013 draft has a goal and two assists.

But Jones is averaging 23:46 of ice time per game, and hockey's punditocracy is raving about the kid.

The Canadiens haven't played Nashville since a Nov. 12, 2011 visit to Music City. Peter Budaj made 25 saves to out duel Pekka Rinne in a 2-1 win.

  40. Un Canadien errant says:

That diving penalty on P.K. was well within the NHL norms. The Nashville skater was clearly beaten by the skill of a better player and skater, he was a couple steps behind, so he had to resort to the hook and hold and do the little slashes, that’s par for the course in Don Cherry’s game.

If P.K. had stayed upright and accepted to be held/interfered to a 30-45% degree, all would have been well. He has to accept it, if other players don’t hook and slash him, he’s liable to score a couple goals a game.

Now, if the opponents go over the limit, and hook-interfere-slash-hold-trip him to an unacceptable degree, somewhere in the 18-100% range, and the conditions are propitious, it’s early in the season, and the score isn’t too close or it’s not late in the game, most probably there will definitely be a penalty, in most cases, generally. P.K. has to understand that and fight through the holds until the refs are shamed into blowing the whistle. If he doesn’t do his utmost to stay upright, he’s making a mockery of the sport, sullying its proud tradition making rules up as it goes along and selectively enforcing them sometimes, when it doesn’t disadvantage the Bruins in any way.

Does anybody remember the Preds Habs game November of 2009. I thought it was a 1-0 loss, but I just google it and it was 2-0. It was in the middle of the Halak vs Price war and Habs were outshot 55-20, Carey saved 53 of them but Halak played next game because JM was doing a win you’re in at that point in the season. I hope this is not a repeat of that.

  45. habstrinifan says:

Know I’m gonna have to duck for this.. but I think we have to be patient with the refs and P.K. As P.K blossoms into maybe an unexpected elite level (after all he was not a first rounder) he is being treated the same way many blossoming ‘stars’ have been by refs.

Which is why both Lemieux and Crosby (no no I’m NOT saying P.K is in their class) were considered whiners. They were always being hooked etc and got fed up with the refs inaction. Eventually the refs come around and allow these players to ‘play their game’ and call the stuff against them.

  46. Ozmodiar says:

Post of the night, so far, goes to Timo (re: gaustad/briere).

I said exactly the same thing when it happened.

Taylor Hall was injured again. He is Pacioretty of Oilers. Good to see that Oilers beat the turds.

  48. Samovich says:

    ” Embezzlement” Another Pangian slip…

  49. danhabsfan says:

I think that on an icing, the reponsibility of the back linesman is to raise is hand if there shot comes from the defensive side of e centre red line. It is up to the front linesman to either call icing, or wave it off. The back ref does not make the deciding call.

  50. Timo says:

I love Carey Price’s hair as much as the next guy, but lets face it… Habs are 5-2 is because of Carey. The team hasn’t dominated anyone yet this season (save for perhaps a period or 2 here and there).

  51. commandant says:

Subban skates through 4 hooks, falls on the 5th hook, and gets called for diving.

    Give me a break.

The crap that PK is getting out of the refs lately is ridiculous.

  52. habs-hampton says:

I’m not not for staged fights, but I think its time for Prust or White to beat the crap out of Gaustad or Bourque.

Any chance Bourque gets a call from Shanny about that cheap headshot on Gorges? … didn’t think so …

  53. Fransaskois says:

How are we starting the season 5-2-0 based on how we’re playing?

  54. Adidess says:

Seeing Bouillon out there on the PP helps disabuse me of the notion that we have depth on D.

  55. Whatever says:

How many years does Subban get for embezzlement? That’s gonna be some tired penalty killers.

  56. Timo says:

Holy crap it was boring and even holier crap Diaz is brutal. I mean he is beyond brutal. There isn’t a play that he doesn’t f up.

Btw, did everyone enjoy the energy Davey Desharnais and Dany Briere bring to the team? Aren’t they awesome?

  57. Un Canadien errant says:

So Paul Gaustad was very circumspect a couple years back when Milan Lucic demolished his goalie Ryan Miller in the mother of all cheap shots, but quite brave in running Daniel Brière into the stanchion. I already didn’t have much respect for that guy, he’s lost of lot of what was left.

  58. ross says:

A dozen or so minor penalties, one after the other. Understandably low morale from the refs’ choice of calls. And the bounces really didn’t go our way in that first period.

Credit the guys for holding on and only being down 1-0 after 20 minutes of that garbage.

  59. AH says:

Ok Habs wake up now, the game is on…

  60. L Elle says:

    Embezzlement…lmao

  61. Mark C says:

If that was a dive, how the hell did Forsberg get away with it?

  62. topher5468 says:

To be honest, PK needs to stay on his feet. We were on the PP, he needs to be out there

“It’s not an obsession, It’s a way of life..”

  63. NLhabsfan says:

That’s two penalties for delay of game and one with refs imagination call on Subban.

  64. Samovich says:

I never post, but that call on P.K is bush league !!! he was trying to get away not draw a penalty!

  65. T-roy West says:

Subban has a chance to be a great player but he isn’t doing himself any favors with yapping at the refs and diving like that. He doesn’t need to play like that. The refs will not give him the benefit of the doubt if he keeps doing this.

    • DipsyDoodler says:

      He didn’t dive.

      • T-roy West says:

Please watch the game more closely Dipsy. He clearly grabbed his stick when he didn’t need to and when the player went to pull his stick away Subban lost his balance really easy. He also has the habit off skating into the boards with a player and putting his right leg behind the opponents and yanking them backwards to the ice along with himself.

    • Da Hema says:

I agree about the chirping, but can anyone really blame Subban for getting frustrated with the referees? Did the refs allow opponents to drape themselves over precious Niklas Lidstrom — or any defenceman for that matter? I consider the call bullshit.

  66. Mullie01 says:

To be fair, PK did grab his stick and find the ice. He could have kept skating and got the same call.

  67. Fransaskois says:

    Briere-Plekanec-Desharnias for the PP?

    Not my favourite.

  68. Chwinsy says:

So it wasn’t just me that heard the ref say embezzlement?!

  69. adadi says:

Zebras are really putting on a show tonight. There should have been no penalty called to either team right now. Incredible!!

  70. DipsyDoodler says:

That’s two phantom calls on PK in the last two games.

  71. danhabsfan says:

    Are the refs racist?

  72. Da Hema says:

Galley doesn’t like the call. What a surprise. Why is it that opponents can drape themselves over Subban and never get a penalty for doing so?

  73. DipsyDoodler says:

OK conspiracy theorists – you have a point.

There is no way Subban “embezzled”.

  74. Mavid says:

Diving..of course I would expect no less
