Liveblog: Game 78 – Canadiens fall behind 3-0, win a wild one 7-4

Another comeback

For the second time in as many meetings, the Canadiens stormed back from a three-goal deficit to beat Ottawa.

This time, they didn't need OT.

Max Pacioretty had a hat trick, raising his season's total to 38 goals. He added two assists.

The Canadiens got singles from Lars Eller, Mike Weaver, David Desharnais and Andrei Markov.

Peter Budaj faced a bombardment of 43 shots.

Craig Anderson was beaten seven times on 23 shots.

Nailing it down

Max Pacioretty completed his hat trick and David Desharnais raised the Canadiens leead to 7-3 before Mika Zibanejad got a late one for Ottawa.

Budaj brilliant

Peter Budaj faced 15 shots in the second period.

He stopped them all.

The Canadiens had four shots at Craig Anderson.

Two went in: Lars Eller's 12th of the season and Max Pacioretty's 37th (and second of the game).

The period included a fight between Jarred Tinordi and Eric Gryba – plus a no-punch brawl started by Brendan Gallagher and Chris Neil.

Within less than six minutes, Ottawa had a 3-0 lead on two goals by Zach Smith and another by Ales Hemsky .

The Senators outshot the Canadiens 7-0, and P.K. Subban was on the bench after 37 seconds of play and minus-2.

Three-goal deficit? The Canadiens had Ottawa just where they want them.

Andrei Markov's seventh goal of the season started the comback.

Mike Weaver's first and Max Pacioretty's 36th – off a brilliant head-man pass by Thomas Vanek – tied it at 3-3.

Ottawa outshot the Canadiens 13-11.

Desperate Senators

Ottawa still has a slight chance of making the playoffs.

The Canadiens know they'll be playing hockey in late April.

At the Canadian Tire Centre Friday night, the home team will be hungrier. And Ottawa has taken at least a point in all four previous games against the Canadiens this season.

The most recent encounter was that wild March 15 game at the Bell Centre. Trailing 4-1 with less than four minutes left, the Canadiens got goals from Lars Eller, Brian Gionta and, with a second remaining in regulation, David Desharnais to force Overtime. Francis Bouillon, of all people, scored 1:26 into OT for the win – setting the Canadiens off on a streak in which they won seven of eight games.

Peter Budaj gets the start. Carey Price will face the red-hot Wings at the Bell Centre Saturday night.

Puck drops 7:10ish.

    …P.K. is ‘a winner’

…like a medieval knight (call Me Sir Shootsalot 🙂 ) I have been crusading for Our Montreal Canadiens to retire Toe Blake’s number 6 …and add His banner in the rafters next to Our other former Greats

…some of You may believe Toe was only a Great Coach, and as a Player, did not quite rate such an honor …and/or, do not want yet another low-number retired and unavailable to contemporary Players

…maybe unaware Toe Blake also was a great hockey Player, won an NHL scoring championship, the Hart Trophy and a Lady Byng, led Our Habs in scoring in 6 seasons of His Hall Of Fame playing career

…Hector ‘Toe’ Blake was an key component with The Rocket and Elmer Lach on ‘The Punch Line’, which was the most feared scoring line of it’s day

…most younger Fans understandably remember Toe Blake mainly as the genius Coach of the Montreal Canadiens at the cusp of Our Golden Era …the Golden Era that most of Us, whether We know it or not, were inspired to follow Our Habs as if it was ‘a religion’ unto It’s own

…Toe Blake’s name is on 11 rings of the Stanley Cup; …8 as Our Coach, …2 as a Player for the Montreal Canadiens …and one as a Montreal Maroon

…Toe Blake was the ‘heart and soul’ motivator Whom inspired and ‘showed the way’ to Our great Players of the time, both as a Player and Captain, …and as Our Coach

…His Legacy is greatly taken for granted, I strongly believe, by the fact that Toe Blake’s number 6 is not represented yet in the rafters of the Bell Centre

…the totality of Toe Blake’s legacy, as a Player and Our Coach, to the History and exceptional success of the Montreal Canadiens becoming the most famous brand in the hockey world is way past the overdue stage

…I request all Montreal Canadiens Fans to join with Ian Cobb and I to right a wrong

…We would like to encourage all Montreal Canadiens Fans whom agree with the objective to make Their opinions known to Geoff Molson and Montreal Canadiens executive board, that a special game night to honor Toe Blake’s number 6 with a banner in the Bell Centre is long-overdue

…if this is something You would like to make right as I and Ian do, I provide the following mail contacts to send Your requests to ‘Retire Number 6 !!!’

Subban jumping to wrestle the gamg to the ice and save Gally from Neil was quite a big time play,, leadership PK love it

  31. Habitant in Surrey says:

…this is a fun hockey game …if only there was play-by-play guy calling the action with more enthusiasm than whoever this guy is

…Danny Gallivan he is not 🙁

  32. Da Hema says:

Galley going on and on about how Ottawa has “collapsed,” that the “call’s are against them,” that all the “breaks are going Montreal’s way.” If his IQ were a little higher than his current 80 he might recognize that Montreal is simply a better hockey team than Ottawa.

  33. thebonscott says:

So florida’s sixth defenseman is one of our top guys that is very telling indeed.

C’mon guys this is not rocket surgery!!!!

    • Mattyleg says:

      1) Although I hate to piss on your negativity, on what team does the 6th defenceman play over 20 minutes per game? Check his stats, Bon.

      b) Why so negative?

      —Hope Springs Eternal—

  34. Mattyleg says:

So here’s a question for the Clown Gallery on here:

We’re winning 5-3, with 5 unanswered goals, we’re 2nd in our division, and our coach still sucks?

    What’s wrong with you people?

    —Hope Springs Eternal—

  35. TheFlower10 says:

Does anyone else think that MT needs to let the young guys make mistakes ? PK is still a young guy. He needs his confidence and we need his confidence. Having him ride the pine is poor coaching. He played DD when he was struggling, PK he sits. I hate to say it, but if I’m PK, I don’t think I sign to play under MT. He’s doing the same thing to Tinordi. These guys have to play.

    scared he won’t break 100.
don’t worry chris. You’ll have plenty if time to practice.

  50. turneria says:

If Neil wasn’t such a mental midget, he could actually be a good hockey player!!

  51. Timo says:

God Habs PP sucks. Just brutal.

  52. Storman says:

  53. Vladdy Mondavi says:
