Liveblog: Game 75 – Canadiens win a wild one for fourth straight

TinordiDet

Road trip starts well

The Canadiens won at the Joe for the first time since 2008 – and it wasn't easy.

They opened the scoring, never trailed and prevailed 5-4.

But undermanned Detroit, fighting desperately for a playoff spot, made an exciting game of it.

Tomas Plekanec scored twice, reaching the 20-goal plateau for the sixth time in his career.

Each member of the Number 1 line scored: David Desharnais got his 14th, Max Pacioretty with his 33rd and Tomas Vanek his 26th.

Detroit got goals from Riley Sheahan, Johan Franzen and two from Tomas Tatar. They outshot the Canadiens 30-29.

Too much excitement

Fice third-period goals – three of them by Detroit

After Tomas Tatar's two early goals tied the game at 3-3, Max Pacioretty's 33rd of the season restored the Canadiens' lead.

Tomas Vanek's 26th made it 5-3 ... but the easy breathing lasted 25 seconds.

Johan Franzen scored to make it 5-4 and set up a wild final nine minutes.

DD scores big one

Riley Sheahan got Detroit back in the game with a goal 1:28 into the second period.

The Canadiens then failed to score during a 5-on-3, and momentum was swinging over to the home side.

But Thomas Vanek fed David Desharnais for his 14th of the season to restore a two-goal lead.

Detroit hit a goal post behind Carey Price late in the period and outshot the Canadiens 11-10.

The Canadiens have not lost in regulation this season when leading after two periods.

Pleks pots pair

Tomas Plekanec reached the 20-goal plateau for the sixth time in his career with two shots that beat Jimmy Howard.

P.K. Subban made sweet passes to draw assists on both goals.

Detroit outshot the Canadiens 9-8, and Carey Price made a fine save on Tomas Jurco.

Desperate Wings

Detroit has made the playoffs every season since 1989-'90.

That's a long streak – but it's in jeopardy.

The Red Wings are one of four Eastern Conference teams with 80 points (the others are Columbus, Washington and Toronto). They currently hold down the last wild-card spot.

The Red Wings also have two wins in their previous games against the Canadiens this season: 4-1 at the Joe Louis Arena on Jan. 24, 2-1 in OT at the Bell Centre on Feb. 26.

The winning goal in the latter game was scored by Gustav Nyquist, who has goals in Detroit's last six games. He's taking up the slack created by injuries to Henrik Zetterberg, Stephen Weiss, Justin Abdelkader, Dan Cleary, Mikael Samuelsson and Pavel Datsyuk.

The game is the first of four on the road for the Canadiens, who are 20-14-2 away from home this season.

Puck drops in the Motor City 7:10ish.

Well that was a fun crazy game……it was great being at the joe seeing the boys talk, warm up and see the skill these guys have up close and personal. I was 6 rows behind MT and saw how good PK was and how bad he was, how pleks works like a dog all the time, and how vanek, while he floats sometimes, is magic with the puck and I gotta say one of the best deflection artists around. Drawbacks…..JLA’s scoreboard/replays……wing fans who love there beer and talking anything but the game and heads buried in their information box’s…..oh and it also kind of sucks when the people on the other side of you are too big to sit all the way back in their chairs, so u can’t really see the play down in that end. But the boys won, it was entertaining…..now I’m going to watch it all over again on the PVR to see what i missed.

    Shaker out!

Finally saw where PK got hurt,, dirty play by Helm, hit PK blind spot hit while PK was going off,, made it look like an excuse me bump, but he knew what he was doing..

The PQ, IMO is not a real political party bound by ideology. They are comprised of aging relics of la revolution tranquile, socialists, ignorant Saugenay trailer trash, French language facists, hard-core uber capitalist conservatives like Paledeau, racists, and pot-banging lowlife leftovers from those annoying Student Protests.
The one thing they have in common is hatred for anyone who speaks English as their mother tongue, and anyone who was not born here.

    @HiS
It is a very small world Christopher. I remember Hodge from later in his career with Oakland and Vancouver…great goalie.
I’ve always had a soft spot for the old time goaltenders. Brave brave men for sure…

  6. slapshot777 says:

Why do the people of Quebec give the PQ a chance at running the province. All they do is constantly stir up crap and bring up the separation debate. Don’t they realize that no one is really that interested in what they say. All they do is put the province in deeper debit.

  7. Storman says:

Watching highlights and seeing PK throw that puck up in the air all over again,, wow I just can not believe Subbans turnover to start third period,, unbelievably bad,, wow

At least the good news for the Habs over the next few weeks is Moen and Weise should be good to go and Gorges should be close as well.

  11. habsfan0 says:

Habs win a very sloppy game and were lucky 4th goal wasn’t called offside.
But when you’re playing well in general, the breaks tend to go your way.

  12. HabinBurlington says:

So our 2 most talented players had average games on the road and we still won. There is something impressive about that.

  13. EasternOntarioHabsFan says:

What a story, Tim Bozon was at deaths door not long ago but seems to be recovering VERY well.

    …as important, …WHO ??? won the debate tonight ?

    …and, I don’t mean the Toronto mayoralty debate :)

  15. Cal says:

Well, that wasn’t a classic defensive gem, but it was a helluva lot of fun.
It’s funny laff fans think this Hab win will help them. They still have to win. (Insert evil laugh here)

No need to panic with Vanek. He makes DD and Pax better. Has Vanek been on number 1 lines before? Yes I would guess. Anyone known what they were?

But advanced stats, shown that when playing more than 8minutes in the second period with 1/3 off his starts in the offensive zones lead to twice as many scoring opportunities against in the third period if they play on a Tuesday, which goes to show Diaz is better.

Tsn 690 just reported that Tim Bozon tweeted that he is back to good health. He will be at a ceremony Saturday with the Ice. Not playing but at least attending…

    Do the math……..7 x 6 = 42…Love our PK!
    24 cups and counting….

  64. nova scotia vees says:

These posts against P.K disturb me. Blame him for one goal, but not the rest. And shouldn’t our all-world goalie bail the D out now and then. Price sucked tonight. Looked like the Price of the past. And P.K was playing hurt, after that knee check. He is terrific and thank God we have him!

    • Adidess says:

PK would say he was disappointed in himself tonight, aside from his stud first period. There were people defending him too here despite the boneheaded decisions, so don’t worry about it.

I especially like that MT has allowed a ‘détente’ in his relationship with PK in the last few weeks, allowing him to play through mistakes and challenging him to do better by putting him out there again with the game on the line. That’s a better way, we won’t do much in the playoffs without an engaged Subban on offence and a very responsible Subban on D.

      • chesterfiled says:

Right on! But WTF, Price was ok, Subban was ok, they played a playoff style game against a team who wants to be in the playoffs… a pretty damn good Detroit team who are full of surprises

  65. Loop_Garoo says:

Tim Bozon is leaving the hospital tomorrow according to his twitter feed.

  67. AA - #25 says:

The game went the way I expected but I must say I didn’t know who would get the two points, glad it was the Habs.
Galchenyuk believe it or not I see signs of Eller, hope it isn’t true.

    • chesterfiled says:

The signifier is you should drink less. Eller and Chucky play different games, different talents, are two very different players. Habs would win tonight is obvious, they were due after losing the first two and eff Detroit who were supposed to dominate the east
