Liveblog: Game 74 – Canadiens win ugly

Big W

Each win moves the Canadiens closer to clinching a playoff spot.

This one didn't come easy.

Buffalo goaltender Matt Hackett was spectacular under a 35-shot bombardment, and it was almost 12 minutes into the third period when the Canadiens finally solved him.

Max Pacioretty scored his 32nd of the season and 100th of his career off a feed from Thomas Vanek.

Daniel Brière added an insurance goal on a Canadiens power play.

Carey Price made 24 saves for his fifth shutout of the season.

Max scores 100th

Max Pacioretty got the winner with his 32nd of the season and 100th of his career.

Daniel Brière added a power-play goal.

Canadiens outshot the Sabres 35-24.

Carey Price's shutout earned him the First Star.

PP sputters

Of the Canadiens' 12 shots in the second period, none were recorded during a four-minute power play.

They'll be on the PP again to start the third.

The Sabres had five SoG.

Quiet start

The excitement level must have been seized at Customs when the Canadiens returned from Boston.

Shots were 11-10 Buffalo.

Carey Price made good stops on Matt D'Agostini and Torrey Mitchell.

The new fourth line – Lars Eller, Michäel Bournival and Ryan White – was the Canadiens' best.

Trap game?

Less than 24 hours after an emotional win in Boston, the Canadiens return to the Bell Cntre to face the worst team in the NHL.

How bad are the Buffalo Sabres?

They have 11 fewer points than the Edmonton Oilers.

That's bad.

Their goal differential is a league-worst minus-72.

That's really bad.

The Sabres have won a league-low eight road games this season.

That's beyond bad.

The Canadiens will be going for a season sweep of their four games against Buffalo.

Why, apart from pathological pessimism, do I have the sneaking suspicion this will not be an easy W?

Lars Eller and Ryan White are in for the injured Travis Moen and Dale Weise. Jarred Tinordi draws in for Frankie Boo.

Puck drops 7:40ish.

Dogs lose 4-0 to Texas, out shot 40-20.

  2. Black Horse says:

If spectacular is getting 99% of the shots in your gut then Hackett was.

  3. jlgib1019 says:

I’m really hoping for Leafs to get final wild card spot. I’d like to see them dress the same goon squad that took Boston to 7 last yr with Bernier in net

  4. habsfan0 says:

By the time Saturday rolls around, the Leafs will most likely have lost at Philadelphia, further diminishing their already fading playoff hopes.
Coach’s Corner might have a funereal aura to it that night.

  5. Thomas Le Fan says:

Another nice win. Felt a little sorry for Hackett. He played a good game.

Hockey isn’t everything … it’s the only thing … except for beer and guitars!

  6. Mattyleg says:

Boone, you forgot the comma after win.

    And who you talkin’ to??

  7. howiemorenz7 says:

I truly don’t know what I enjoy more: a Habs win, or a Leafs loss. When it happens on the same night, well, that just makes my life in heaven even sweeter. Time for a Sleeman.

    Maroons Suck. #7 foreva.

  8. Slackman says:

Im gonna say it. Michel Therrien isn’t a terrible coach.

“When the going get’s weird, the weird turn pro”

    • JF says:

I actually think, and have thought since last year, that he is a very good coach. Even in his first go-round behind the Habs’ bench, the fact that he took that very mediocre team to the second round (and, had it not been for his meltdown in Game 4 against Carolina, would have taken them to the Conference Final), suggests that he knows how to coach and how to get the best out of a team.

  9. Willy the bum says:

Weise out upper-waist injury 2-3 weeks
    Moen out concussion indefinitely

  10. JUST ME says:

Looks like the Habs will probably be the only canadian team to make it in the playoffs. How often has that happened ? I guess it will be repeated hundreds of time in the next weeks but for now i can`t remember when.
Dull game as expected. Habs tend to play the opponents game too often but against the poor poor Sabres at one point things fall into place. As leafs fall in the standings…My heart bleeds…not !

  11. HabinBurlington says:

Big win, have to beat the teams you’re supposed to beat and we did. Coming off that Bruin game I’m glad tonight wasn’t Detroit.

Speaking of which, what is the deal with Nyquist! Holy Cow!

  12. Danno says:

Habs have won six of their last seven games.

  13. BobbySmithWasClutch says:

I can see a Habs letdown on Thursday on the road against a hungry/desperate Red Wings team. Could be like the Columbus game last week.

  14. Willy the bum says:

Is it bizarre, even though that Tinordi played great tonight, that he stayed with the team longer than Beaulieu? Just saying though…

    • BobbySmithWasClutch says:

He’s one year older in his development than Beaulieu and played in the playoffs last year. Coaches rarely trust rookie defensemen. I guess coaches decided with Gorges out and Subban and Markov in that they’d rather have their depth be defensive/physical than offensive. Plus they probably want Tinordi to learn from Murray.

  15. CH Marshall says:

Pretty sombre at my Toronto local bar

  16. CJ says:

Timo is going to hate this, but following three games in four nights the boys deserve a day off tomorrow. They should enjoy the rest and look forward to regrouping to face Detroit.

Bourque made a nice play to set up the Briere goal. What frustrates me, and I’m sure the coaching staff, is that he doesn’t display that consistent effort every game. Here one minute and gone the next. If only he could use his size to separate opponents from the puck and get in on the forecheck we would really have something. Alas, I’ll settle for once in awhile.

I love the bounce that has appeared in the team’s step. Further, the team is picking up for each other. IMO, PK was not great tonight, but the others rallied around and help pick up the slack. I’ve been down on them both the past two months, but this is the best hockey Markov and Emelin have played all year. I hope it continues to build their confidence and carry over into the postseason.

Yes, the postseason. I think it’s fairly safe to start talking about hockey past April 16th. Emelin and Weaver have a combined 11 games of experience and Tinordi is still green, but there is enough experience around this team to balance the lot.

I’ll cut it off short tonight. The two points are in the bank and I’m in the sack. Catch up with you all tomorrow. Cheers, CJ

  17. Cal says:

A 2-0 win after that bone-breaker in Beantown?
    Book ’em, Danno!

  18. habsfan0 says:

Thankfully, the Habs survived what everybody knew going in was a trap game.
They’ll definitely be “up” for their next game,at Detroit.

  19. Danno says:

Not one for the All-Time Classic Habs DVD Box set, but it’s a big two points anyways! A character win. Well done boys!

  20. Ah, spring.

    The snow is melting…

    The sun is shining…

…and the Leafs are falling. 😉

  21. BobbySmithWasClutch says:

I disagree with the headline “Canadiens win ugly”. They deserved the win

  22. Danno says:

I look at the standings and I see the Toronto Maple Leafs have dropped down to 10th place.

And I reach for a tissue as a solitary tear rolls down my cheek.

  23. slapshot777 says:

Next up Detroit. We owe them a beating. They have beaten us twice this season. Time to repay the favor.

    • Willy the bum says:

There are TWO Red Wings games left, and they desperately need the points for them. Not easy games to play, so Habs should get it together to beat them soon.

    • laGrandeTerreur says:

I want them to win, but if they lose, I won’t be that upset. Silver lining will be that it helps keep the Leaves out of the playoffs. 🙂

    • Marc10 says:

Better win this one, because the second Detroit game is the second game of a back to back.

They’re going to skate and trap. That’s the modern day Detroit team without Datsyuk or Zetterberg. Not an easy game by any means. Going to need to bring it to put the stick in the Winged Wheel’s spokes.

  24. UnkleGary says:

At @Front, and anyone else who can’t stand the princess, just saw this beauty on Facebook.

  25. Da Hema says:

No such thing as an “ugly win.” They are all lovely!

  26. Rugger says:

Nice to look at the standings and not see any leaves in a play-off position.

  27. Sportfan says:

HA Bernier couldn’t even save the Leafs and I think the Jackets passed them now.

You know we have all said tings about MT and the way he runs the team and I still fear for our young guys and yes when we lose, we have gone on long streaks, but its been a good season.

  28. HabsPooch says:

Great to see Tinordi play a solid 19 minutes of hockey…getting back on the saddle again.

    • CJ says:

Great bounce back game. He made some nice plays to headman the puck. He is not without faults, but I really like what he brings to the team.

      • HabsPooch says:

If you saw the brutal giveaway Pietrangelo committed tonight against the Leafs, that’s proof in the pudding all defensemen, rookies or veterans make their fair share of mistakes. Now let’s bring up Beaulieu up for Pete’s sake and give our defense another dimension to their game…

    • jlgib1019 says:

Its amazing how he gets bashed for every mistake he makes. It’s like we don’t need a physical young 6’6 dman. Those same people bash Murray, want the Cube in all the time and rue the day we dumped Diaz

  30. RetroMikey says:

Tampa will be a tough team to play against in the playoffs.
The Habs never fared well playing in the state of Florida as well from past seasons
Congrats to the Habs. Wish Wiese, Prust and Moen speedy recoveries.
The team ness them in the playoffs

  31. Willy the bum says:

What do you think is the estimate of points for Habs to clinch a playoff spot?

  32. Bmon44 says:

marky has been playing with a bit of an edge the past few games, I’m liking this. We looked solid on d, i know it was the sabres but the d looked good considering the d had to work their butts off last night with all the penalty killing and the hard forecheck of the bruins. And pricy made all the good stops he needed to, i love it when he gets a shut out.

  33. BobbySmithWasClutch says:

I wish we had a player like David Backes. Exactly what we need.

  34. Habilis says:

That Detroit loss all but cements us into playing Tampa. Home ice would be sweet.

  35. Willy the bum says:

Good to see PJ’s not smiling tonight. Probably heard the Leafs miss the playoffs.

  36. Slackman says:

also, good for price standing up for his pal!

“When the going get’s weird, the weird turn pro”

  37. naweed235 says:

Good to see Pricey step up on the Sabres to back Marky up. Also, as much as the Laffs have dug a deep hole for themselves, something tells me they’ll still squeeze in. Never underestimate the power and influence of the league and the owners.

  38. NLhabsfan says:

Price not afraid to drop em

  39. Max_Hab_Fan says:

Thanks for the entertainment! Good night y’all.

  40. JVF says:

    Over the cliff.

  41. HabFab says:

So Toronto drops to 10th place… so sad!

  42. Monahab says:

Love Price coming to the aid of the General there….wow, what a leader!

  43. Davey93 says:

With 9 points ahead of Detroit and the Laffs, I think it’s almost a sure thing we’ll meet Tampa in the first round

  44. Max_Hab_Fan says:

I think we beat Buffalo 2-0 a couple of weeks ago on the back end of a back to back game weekend. Love it! Toronto dropping like a rock. I love gravity!

  45. Willy the bum says:
