Liveblog: Game 74 – Canadiens win ugly

WeaverBuff

Big W

Each win moves the Canadiens closer to clinching a playoff spot.

This one didn't come easy.

Buffalo goaltender Matt Hackett was spectacular under a 35-shot bombardment, and it was almost 12 minutes into the third period when the Canadiens finally solved him.

Max Pacioretty scored his 32nd of the season and 100th of his career off a feed from Thomas Vanek.

Daniel Brière added an insurance goal on a Canadiens power play.

Carey Price made 24 saves for his fifth shutout of the season.

Max scores 100th

Max Pacioretty got the winner with his 32nd of the season and 100th of his career.

Daniel Brière added a power-play goal.

Canadiens outshot the Sabres 35-24.

Carey Price's shutout earned him the First Star.

PP sputters

Of the Canadiens' 12 shots in the second period, none were recorded during a four-minute power play.

They'll be on the PP again to start the third.

The Sabres had five SoG.

Quiet start

The excitement level must have been seized at Customs when the Canadiens returned from Boston.

Shots were 11-10 Buffalo.

Carey Price made good stops on Matt D'Agostini and Torrey Mitchell.

The new fourth line – Lars Eller, Michäel Bournival and Ryan White – was the Canadiens' best.

Trap game?

Less than 24 hours after an emotional win in Boston, the Canadiens return to the Bell Cntre to face the worst team in the NHL.

How bad are the Buffalo Sabres?

They have 11 fewer points than the Edmonton Oilers.

That's bad.

Their goal differential is a league-worst minus-72.

That's really bad.

The Sabres have won a league-low eight road games this season.

That's beyond bad.

The Canadiens will be going for a season sweep of their four games against Buffalo.

Why, apart from pathological pessimism, do I have the sneaking suspicion this will not be an easy W?

Lars Eller and Ryan White are in for the injured Travis Moen and Dale Weise. Jarred Tinordi draws in for Frankie Boo.

Puck drops 7:40ish.

  2. frontenac1 says:

Hola amigos! Just came to. Any scraps yet?Jeff Hackett looks pretty good after all these years eh? Vas-y Les Boys!

  3. Willy the bum says:

Hackett’s pads looks like the ones I wore during my street hockey days back in high school…

  4. duffy says:

Dip Claude Julien in a bucket of white paint and he could pass as the Michelin Man .

  5. aHabGrowsInBrooklyn says:

Man, like seeing Bournival back out there.

  6. Paz says:

I thin you put Bournival n the left side and Gallagher on te right side you could play Scott Gomez in the middle and it would Still work.

  7. Boone… you’re a Bourque hater? Maybe he’ll use his 6’2″ height and 215 pound frame… maybe…

    I’m speechless! 20 years and counting…

  8. Black Horse says:

So is Montreal going to make Hackett look like Marty F B?

  9. Danno says:

Good combo! Great skating and puck possession!

    Nice shift by Eller line.

  11. Storman says:

Briere’s agent should look for an endorsement deal from viagra, the ad would read “Viagra The only way Danny plays hard”

  12. laGrandeTerreur says:

Bourque is always doing something. I don’t understand why people think he’s lazy. He doesn’t deliver consistently, I get that, that’s obvious. But he seems to be in the mix an awful lot, just poor execution. He is not a liability.

  13. Da Hema says:

It’d be nice to see Briere and Vanek each score hat-tricks against their old team much like every former Hab seems to do to us.

  14. Giving the Sabres too many looks at Pricer. Don’t like our loosey goosey play.

    I’m speechless! 20 years and counting…

  15. Black Horse says:

Price & Budaj = Roy & Hayward LOL

  16. duffy says:

I would think Vanek would really want this one.

  17. Willy the bum says:

Nice save for Price, he should get more days off if he’s ready for the playoffs.

  18. Sal from the Hammer says:

Come on! Sabres getting some good looks!

  19. Storman says:

Dion Phaneuf blames Toronto’s weak first period on very slippery ice.

  20. danhabsfan says:

Habs are not zeroed in, they need to notch it up

  21. Black Horse says:

I know it is a PK but leaving Dags all alone in front of Price! Really?

  31. Samovich says:

What a crap call as usual!!

  32. Willy the bum says:

Look carefully on Matt Hackett’s mask, it got the Habs kid on one side. That’s awesome, we should trade up Devan Dubnyk for him in the off-season, if Sabres need an experienced goalie.

  33. Strummer says:

    Hopefully Chucky’s S/O goal was a motivator/kick start

The bandwagon is crowded. What the heck is wrong with Bernier, couldn’t stop 23 measly shots in the 1st?? Gotta love that Leaf defense.

  35. Maksimir says:

Jesus H. Christ – Blues put 23 shots on Bernier in the first!

  66. Gionta was just on 690, man I love that guy. He laughed that he was tired and had an afternoon nap. Too bad he can’t pick corners like he used to. I don’t think he’ll be back this summer, he’ll walk for UFA and we’ll bring in a younger version.

  68. HabFan in Edmonton says:

Bernier has stopped 11/11 shots so far. Darn! I knew this was going to happen.

  69. Paz says:

I remember watching the French Cinnection line at the Forum. Gilbert Perrault was one of the best. Remarkable skater.

      Proudly Canadian but passionately Canadien!

      • HabFan in Edmonton says:

You also had “The Steamer” but Harold Snepts was my favourite, lasted a long time for a guy with zero talent.

        • Habcouver says:

Both Steamer and Snepstsy had more heart than some of the clowns that donned the jersey.

          • HabFan in Edmonton says:

They both had a lot of heart. Good guys who I would take on my team any time although Harold would probably be on the 3rd defense pairing.

  70. Habilis says:

Loafs being out-shot 10-1 by the Blues. Bernier hanging in so far.

5 inches of freaking snow today……in Virginia

  72. Savardian Spin-o-rama says:

Big George Laraque on RDS saying Lucy wouldn’t dance. Are we surprised he declined the invitation? To be fair Lucy was just coming into the league at the time. Wonder whether he’d go now with a BGL in his prime?

  73. Paz says:

1978 was a good year to be a Habs fan. Happy Days! And Laverne and Shirley.
