Liveblog: Game 72 – Canadiens win a nailbiter on Plekanec goal

MaxCelebrate

Great game

It was important to both teams, and the Canadiens and Leafs rose to the occasion.

Max Pacioretty and Rene Bourque staked the Canadiens to a 2-0 lead early in the first period.

Joffrey Lupul and Tyler Bozak tied it up, but Brian Gionta beat James Reimer with 53 seconds left in the period.

After a scoreless second period, Nazem Kadri scored on a power play to make it 3-3 before Tomas Plekanec, who was in the pnalty box for Kadri's goal, bagged the winner.

Shots were 36-36.

The win moved the Canadiens five points ahead of Toronto in Atlantic Division standings.

.

Pleks atones

Tomas Plekanec was in the penalty box when Nazem Kadri completed a neat passing play to tie the game at 3-3.

Then on a Canadiens power play, Plekanec converted Andrei Markov's feed for the winning goal.

It was his first in 23 games.

CH survives surge

Toronto outshot the Canadiens 13-8 ... and that doesn't include the posts clanked by Jake Gardiner and Morgan Reilly.

Should be a terrific third period.

Last shot wins

The Canadiens grabbed an early lead on Max Pacioretty's 31st goal and RENE BOURQUE's ninth.

A Joffrey Lupul one-timer gave the Leafs life, and Tyler Bozak tied it.

The deadlock lasted 64 seconds.

With less than a minute left in the period, some yeoman board work by BOURQUE and Daniel Briere popped the puck loose to Brian Gionta, who scored his 15th.

Canadiens outshot Toronto 14-13.

Your basic big one

Your Montreal Canadiens hook up with the Leafs in a classic four-pointer at the ACC.

The Canadiens are third in the Atlantic Division, three points ahead of the Leafs, who hold a wild-card playoff spot. The race tightened when Detroit won on Saturday afternoon.

This is the last of five meetings between the Highway 401 rivals.

The Canadiens have won two of the three games played at the Bell Centre, while the Leafs won the teams' Jan. 18 game at the ACC.

Key lineup move: Alex Galchenyuk will centre the Canadiens' third line, with Brian Gionta and Rene Bourque on his wings. This is the kid's chance to shine in an important game.

Puck drops 7:10ish, after the Hockey Night in Canada studio crew are finished waving their blue and white pom-poms.

Check back later for some bleu-blanc-rouge live blogging.

Love the French 1/2 of the NA especially when sing in Tea-town!

  39. habs_54321 says:

Nice drive from Eller, sooner he starts thinking power game instead of perimiter the better

  40. AceTen says:

So much for Chucky getting a shot at center. He didn’t even get a shift before Therrien starts with his juggling.

  41. Fansincebirth says:

MT should tell Murray that he’s not allowed past centre ice tonight

  42. danhabsfan says:

Horrible play by Markov, liked Ellers shift

  43. Maksimir says:

I might have to close this site down… Timo and Boone live blogging? That’s pessimism overload!

Wow Markov looked slow on Kessel.

  47. duffy says:

What’s the odds on the Habs getting the first Penalty ?

  48. durocher says:

How about sitting Bourque and bringing up Beaulieu as a #7 D?

  49. Timo says:

Carey got a haircut… not a good sign.

  50. Timo says:

According to RDS Pleks has 1 goal in last 23 games and 13 shots in last 12 games. Playoffs is close… little girl is back.

  51. Savardian Spin-o-rama says:

Mario Tremblay ragging on Plecky on RDS. Expects more from a guy pulling down his kind of salary. Now that’s calling a spade a spade. Step it up #14.

  52. the_larry says:

“Mario Tremblay says Pleks has to produce more.”

Pleks has been one of about 3 Habs players that we can safely say has been absolutely crucial to the Habs success so far.

I guess comments like that are why Tremblay had such a pathetic, embarrassing coaching career.

  53. Black Horse says:

    Habs 4, Meat Loafs 1

    LETS GO HABS …

  54. smiler2729 says:

Geez, Toronto, just drop the puck, leave the ceremonial tribute stuff to Montreal

  55. Alvin says:

Well Leafs are better offensively and the Habs better defensively.
Odds should favour the Leafs in this one.

  56. B says:

BC wins 3-1 over Shawinigan to go up 2 games to none in the series. Hudon scores an empty netter from Grégoire. Shawinigan goalie Marvin Cüpper stopped 61 of 63 shots.

    –Go Habs Go!–

  57. Clay says:

Nothing better on a Saturday evening than Habs vs Leafs, home made linguini vongole, and a nice wine bottle of 22 year old rum for dessert. Go Habs!

  58. danhabsfan says:

Is Pleks not the shut down guy, they why play him where he is. Our third line is useless, and no one to shut down the Kessel line. What is the thinking?

  59. Haberoooo13 says:

Eller with a hatty tonight…and Bourque with 2…and me in the ICU!

    Lafleur coming out rather gingerly…

My prediction: Reimer sucks on purpose to piss off Carlyle. :)

    Go Habs Go!

  62. CJ says:

Going to be a tough game. I expect the Leafs’ best game. They historically play us very tough. I anticipate that they will have a bee in their bonnet tonight. I’d love to have a young Parros or Gadzic on the fourth line just in case. Without Prust, Tinordi and White we are vulnerable.

  63. HUDSONHAB says:

Let’s do this. Happy Happy. Joy Joy.

Very nervous about this game, in the past Montreal has had a habit of letting teams in a slump break out of that Slump ,, Hope that is not the case tonight

  68. NLhabsfan says:

This is the hardest time to watch CBC have such a love in for the laffs takes patience listening leafs TV.By 10 min. I usually go to RDS

  69. Adidess says:

Did you hear this, folks? Boone doesn’t have a good feeling about this game. Hahaha!
