Liveblog: Game 72 – Canadiens win a nailbiter on Plekanec goal

Great game

It was important to both teams, and the Canadiens and Leafs rose to the occasion.

Max Pacioretty and Rene Bourque staked the Canadiens to a 2-0 lead early in the first period.

Joffrey Lupul and Tyler Bozak tied it up, but Brian Gionta beat James Reimer with 53 seconds left in the period.

After a scoreless second period, Nazem Kadri scored on a power play to make it 3-3 before Tomas Plekanec, who was in the pnalty box for Kadri's goal, bagged the winner.

Shots were 36-36.

The win moved the Canadiens five points ahead of Toronto in Atlantic Division standings.

Pleks atones

Tomas Plekanec was in the penalty box when Nazem Kadri completed a neat passing play to tie the game at 3-3.

Then on a Canadiens power play, Plekanec converted Andrei Markov's feed for the winning goal.

It was his first in 23 games.

CH survives surge

Toronto outshot the Canadiens 13-8 ... and that doesn't include the posts clanked by Jake Gardiner and Morgan Reilly.

Should be a terrific third period.

Last shot wins

The Canadiens grabbed an early lead on Max Pacioretty's 31st goal and RENE BOURQUE's ninth.

A Joffrey Lupul one-timer gave the Leafs life, and Tyler Bozak tied it.

The deadlock lasted 64 seconds.

With less than a minute left in the period, some yeoman board work by BOURQUE and Daniel Briere popped the puck loose to Brian Gionta, who scored his 15th.

Canadiens outshot Toronto 14-13.

Your basic big one

Your Montreal Canadiens hook up with the Leafs in a classic four-pointer at the ACC.

The Canadiens are third in the Atlantic Division, three points ahead of the Leafs, who hold a wild-card playoff spot. The race tightened when Detroit won on Saturday afternoon.

This is the last of five meetings between the Highway 401 rivals.

The Canadiens have won two of the three games played at the Bell Centre, while the Leafs won the teams' Jan. 18 game at the ACC.

Key lineup move: Alex Galchenyuk will centre the Canadiens' third line, with Brian Gionta and Rene Bourque on his wings. This is the kid's chance to shine in an important game.

Puck drops 7:10ish, after the Hockey Night in Canada studio crew are finished waving their blue and white pom-poms.

  1. Ian Cobb says:

We won! I should be very happy! but I am not! WHY?
I am pleased that we won and did not give up a loser point. We are so lucky to have Price between the pipes.
But what a frustrating game of mistakes and give aways. Even Price gave the puck to them on the point a few occasions.
If we were playing a good team, we would have come out second best I think.
So now we take on Boston in their barn Monday night. Scary!

And another thing, Therrian said he was going to play Galchenyuk at center between Gionta and Gallagher, what happened to that idea! Now that Eller is side lined, Therrian won’t have a choice but to play him at center. And now it will be against Boston, OH boy!

  2. Storman says:

Bourque seemed a little more invested in taking a few hits to make a play.. wonder how long that will last,, if he only competed on a regular basis he has the size and tools to be a very useful forward,, damn,,,

  3. Danno says:

    Phanoof le goof

  4. Storman says:

Any news on what happened to Eller, at the game he skated right to the bench after taking a draw,,

  5. laGrandeTerreur says:

Scratch what I said. Bourque is considerably better than Eller statistically.

  6. scamorza says:

I predicted earlier this week that the leafs wouldn’t make the playoffs after tonight all the more reason to believe. Can we say hope for the best for Toronto FC? btw, we won the game for crissakes so why is everyone complaining again
come to Dorion suits where you get no….”hassoles” _ Yvon Lambert

  7. Habilis says:

I’m gonna start watching me some Tampa games. We look pretty well locked in to play them now.
Also, go Devils for the next 24 hours.

  8. Steven says:

Weise really was a great addition.

The guy has speed and hustles, chipping in the odd goal. He also has good chemistry with Moen, White, Prust and Eller. He seems to work wherever he’s put.

What makes him more impressive to me is his defensive play, however. He made a lot of really smart plays in this game alone, more specifically near the end of the first period, where he had 2 or 3 interceptions in a span of about 40 seconds.

And to think, we got him for Diaz.

  9. jimmy shaker says:

Did Healy really say the better team lost? I thought this game sucked and although we were lucky to come out with the win, I didn’t think taranna was that much better. Probably should’ve been a 2-2 game that went into OT.

    Shaker out!

  10. Butterface says:

Frank the Bull gets over 25 minutes of ice time…. not good. But still now that Tinordi is out (thank you)…. we should call up Beaulieu.

Some weak penalty calls. Kessel is dangerous. Not sure Borque deserved 1st star, but maybe it will pick him up a bit.

    If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it…..

  11. laGrandeTerreur says:

If Eller is injured, that sucks and I’ll hope he’s healthy for playoff insurance.
That said, I’d rather Bourque and Bournival in the lineup monday. Frankly, they’re both better than Eller.
Even this year with Bourque’s disappearing from the scoresheet, he hasn’t been much worse statistically, and I’d argue he makes less of the bonehead plays.

  12. Storman says:

Just got back from the game, two most dangerous Leafs Phil kessel and Frankie Bouillon,, WOW Cube is an absolute joke,

  13. Sportfan says:

So what is Weise now for the has 10-2-1?

  14. jimmy shaker says:

What happened to Eller? Didn’t see anything weird on that face-off. Whitey comes in for eller and I think bernie will be scratched maybe get a chance the next night vs the sabres.

    Shaker out

  15. rljmartin says:

For the Murray critics out there…. He and Weaver only players to finish +2 and how many of those speedy forwards did you see racing around Murray?

Took almost 70 games to put Briere at center. He had a good game and looks to be skating really well. MT sure is a stubborn man.

    • UKRAINIANhab says:

I like Weaver. He is a solid player

      • Butterface says:

I would not go so far to say “solid”, but certainly not a chance taker which makes him look better than he is. But what I like is that he is playing to his strengths and not making things complicated for himself. He knows what he is and plays within his skill set.

Tinordi doesn’t know what he is (which is a big guy who should put fear in opposing forwards) and plays beyond his abilities. Tinordi should make easy plays that don’t cause turnovers (re: blue line, red line…) and cause pain – lots and lots of pain to the opposition. Instead he plays like Hal Gill. Not good.

        If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it…..

    • Mattyleg says:

      Briere has played centre before.
      Quite a few times, actually.

      —Hope Springs Eternal—

  16. Ron says:

Bourni recalled and traveling to Boston with team.

  17. habsfan0 says:

Kudos to the Habs for tonight’s victory, but if they play in Boston the way they played against the Laffs,it’s gonna get real ugly.

  18. Black Horse says:

That save by Price MVP of the season) on the Kessel breakaway was the save of the game.

  19. Mattyleg says:

    I missed it.
    What did Healey/Stock say?

    —Hope Springs Eternal—

  20. UKRAINIANhab says:

Heeeerrrreeee comes the Plek goal scoring fest. HUGE goal from my favourite player (obvious isnt it) Tomas Plekanec. Heck, I have a signed Plekanec jersey in my living room. PLEK!

  21. Danno says:

I wish to thank Mike Boone for the perfectly executed BRJ©’s tonight.

  22. gavros7 says:

@ Mike D. That’s what I’ve been trying to say but in a few minutes I became a separatist and a turd

    • laGrandeTerreur says:

I didn’t call you a separatist. You need some practice with reading comprehension. Or you can just stop being a useless, hate-mongering troll.

  23. Ring of Fire says:

Just think we where 3:20 last week from plummeting and now they reel off 4 out of 5….nice….as far as Leafs go their still in the hunt but eventually they’ll implode like they do every year.

    The Thin Blue Line.

  24. UKRAINIANhab says:

  25. jimmy shaker says:

    Thanks Reims….

taranna 2 nice goals and a gift and 2 crossbars.

habs: maybe 1 nice goal, a deflection off of gleason and 2 stinkers.

I hate these games, I hate these games, I hate these games. Very happy we got the two points, and these two teams won’t meet till next year.

    Shaker out!

  26. Danno says:

Bournival should get a call up?

“Hey Richard, two minutes for looking so good!”

  27. LeGrosBill says:

Why Gui Tenderness talking on Antichambre like he’s an expert?

  28. naweed235 says:

Bournival is called up in Eller’s absence

  29. gavros7 says:

Trust me I’m not a separatist by far but when our stupid premier thanks all the French players for winning gold and ignores the 1’s playing in the city your giving them excuses to hate us

  30. Adidess says:

That contract the Leafs gave Clarkson is looking so pretty right now.

  31. slapshot777 says:

Time to focus on the Bruins now.

  32. mrhabby says:

Glen Heals Healy on Twitter christ he would have more peeps blocked than followers.

  33. habstrinifan says:

Someone said it… a regulation win.

    Leafs are true losers.

  34. Sportfan says:

Anyone else see the douche on his cellphone during the anthem between the Oilers and Flames? I could have sworn I just saw that.

Sports and Entertainment in the link click and enjoy, clicking is fun!

  35. Dr.Rex says:

    Big win!

IN a game like this you really see the importance of Josh Gorges. I am always shocked to see people criticize Gorgie.

There are 29 other GM’s that do recognize his value.

  36. The Jackal says:

So how stupid is MT for playing Bourque and Murray?

    Hockey sine stercore tauri.

    • slapshot777 says:

Well I can’t speak for everyone but I thought Bourgue play a good game. Murray was in just in case the Leafs were up to trying to play crap hockey.

  37. naweed235 says:

1.Our D looked suspect. The stability Gorges brings is missed big time.
    2. As much as I like Vanek, I’d be hesitant to throw more than $6M long term at him. He looks slow and his effort level seems questionable. Needless to say when he has the puck around the net he is one of the most dangerous players in the league.

    • Texus says:

I think that’s just kinda the way he plays the game, looks very slow and doesn’t hit but I don’t think it’s necessarily a lack of effort, just his style. Still always seems to find the open areas and is able to cash in. He’s a pretty ridiculous passer too. His production over the years doesn’t lie either, I’d make a big effort to keep him if I was MB

  38. filincal says:

This win and “First Star” should be dedicated to PJ Stock and Healy. How dare Bourque have a breakaway, and the worse team lose?

  39. mrhabby says:

    Interesting way to play Bork.

send him to the press box every 5-6 games and then play him. tough love seems to work with this guy.

  40. rhino514 says:

D is too shaky right now. Tinordi can play more minutes than Murray, the kid should draw in.
    Did eller´s injury look serious?

    • Texus says:

I agree D is an issue, as it’s been most of the season. Not sure what the solution is, I would’ve liked to keep Beaulieu and Tinordi eariler and let them gain experience. Might be too late for that now, especially with Beaulieu. Hopefully Gorges can make it back for the playoffs

    • crane says:

Boullion 25 minutes, completely nuts,we deserve to lose with coach MT

    • Strummer says:

Frankie Boo at 25 minutes is a problem

“It’s just an opinion- I could be wrong”

  41. JohnBellyful says:

    ‘Canadiens win a nailbiter’?

Geez, I woulda gone with one of these:

Habs lose Eller, still manage win
Kessel miffed at JVR: trouble in Leafland?
Giveaways galore but Habs to rest tomorr’
Price + posts + Reimer = Habs’ victory
    PJ’s stock continues to plummet
39th win for idiot savant Therrien

  42. Sportfan says:

Glen Healys brain did the right thing and left years ago

Sports and Entertainment in the link click and enjoy, clicking is fun!

  43. mrhabby says:

Healy is a dork but he has praised the habs players many times over the years and also ripped leafs players as well…

  44. WindsorHab-10 says:

Happy with the win as it a was a huge game for both teams. Nice game by Bourque as well. Like others here, I’d rather see Tinordi & Beaulieu in place of Bouillion/Weaver.

Best part of the game? Watching the veins on Carlyle’s face almost pop. What an idiot. Sorry MT.

  45. gavros7 says:

    Montreal. Why

  46. Kooch7800 says:

Close call. Glad we pulled it off. We Def need our d to play better for the playoffs! Injuries are starting to creep in a hit.

Hopefully Eller isn’t out too long. With Prust and gorges down already

  47. Stevie.Ray says:

Habs playoff chances go up 3% after that game.

We now have a 97.6% chance of making the playoffs,
a 66% chance we finish 3rd in the division,
a 17% chance we finish 2nd in the division,
    a 11% chance we finish 7th,
and we have an 80% chance we will face Tampa Bay,
a 10% chance we will face Pittsburgh,
and a 5% chance we will face Boston.

  48. Ktowner says:

I turned off the volume for the third, made it so much more enjoyable.

  49. CHicoHab says:

Patches if he scored in the first makes it 3-0 this game was over.

  51. CJ says:

PK just beat out Frankie for TOI leader tonight. They were 1-2 of all players on either team.

  52. slapshot777 says:

WTF is Amber saying that Price is now vindicated in Montreal after winning gold at Sochi after being criticized in Montreal

    • athanor says:

Do you read this site much?

There have been, particularly before the Olympics, quite a few people who have gone after him like a junkyard dog. Even after the Olympic win, there are benighted people who insist he is only average.

  53. olematelot says:

Why all the negativity, we won!!

  54. gavros7 says:

Why would you want to praise a team that comes from a province that hates canada and Toronto is the most pro Canada city

  55. habcertain says:

Entertaining game, I still would prefer the kids on the D.!

  56. Da Hema says:

I want to tweet Glen Healy, but I am loathe to legitimate him in the tweetosphere. What to do…?

  57. gavros7 says:

Hate CBC as much as the Leafs but let’s be honest our bright politicians created that hate they have for us.

  58. duffy says:

Not one word about the Habs by the pair of clowns on CBC. Hope CBC goes down the tubes !!

  59. Habilis says:

Something you won’t hear the Leaf blowers at CBC admit: We are Canada’s best shot at a Cup. By a lot.

    • laGrandeTerreur says:

and that’s the case most years. Even when vancouver was in the finals against Boston, Habs played better against Beaners than Nucks did.

  60. slapshot777 says:

I guess Cherry didn’t see the stats. The Leafs had a 57% chance of making he playoffs before the game. The Habs had a 93% before the game.

  61. mrhabby says:

all is good in the Universe…habs win and iam looking forward to monday talking trash with the leafs homers i work with…can’t wait…lmao.

man i cant wait for George S .

  62. Vito says:

I watched the game in a bar inVancouver… How much joy it was to stick it to the leaf fans!!! I made sure to tell them that another 10 years of missing the playoffs are starting this season ))

  63. laGrandeTerreur says:

I’m with Cherry on the girls thing. Too much desire to be outraged over stuff like that. Meanwhile, the same “progressive” people want to legalize prostitution – the selling of women like cattle.

  64. Fansincebirth says:

so Montreal vs Leafs….no 1st, 2nd intermission talk about the Habs despite leading, post game, not a word about the Habs winning FFS

  65. expat_habsfan says:

Just saw a post game with Price. He’s just so humble, maybe not the best goalie ever but definitely looks like a great teammate.

  66. hitgurl says:

Great win! I love watching Randy Carlyle turn red!!
I worry about that Plekanac line though…. They need some size .

  67. slapshot777 says:

The Jets lose and all s over. The Leafs lose and are still making the playoffs.

  68. slapshot777 says:

Still no mention of the Habs unbelievable. It is f**king joke now they will talk about the Clarkson Cup. They are determined to shut the Habs out period.

  69. Fansincebirth says:

wow….Cherry soooooooooooooooooo touchy about too many men 🙂

  70. NightRyder says:

Enjoyable win, to be sure. Seeing Frankie Bouillon play 25 minutes is a little troublesome, however.

  71. UKRAINIANhab says:

  72. Thomas Le Fan says:

To the 268 that voted for the Leafs I have a message. Good on ya! Go Habs!

By the way, too many men? That was as indisputable a call as you’ll ever see. Carlisle was pi**ed. Good on him too.

Hockey isn’t everything … it’s the only thing … except for beer and guitars!

  73. Habcouver says:

Price could have easily been a star if he put made his saves look more difficult. The guy is a machine.

    We Are (Not) All Canucks.
    Proudly Canadian but passionately Canadien!

  74. slapshot777 says:

    Let see how this goes.

  75. LeGrosBill says:

I’m not saying our D is the second coming of Big Bird, Savard, and Lapointe, but you have to give the laffs credit, they have have offensive skills, although their one deminsionality is going to make it hard for them to make the play-offs. I think Columbus sneaks in.
