Liveblog: Game 71 – Columbus wins tight one

BJs

Winning streak ends

And the race for playoff spots tightens.

Columbus is in a more desperate battle – and they played like it.

The Blue Jackets are big, fast and physical. They dominated play for long stretches.

The spectacular Ryan Johansen scored the third-period winner after a brutal Jarred Tinordi turnover.

Brandon Dubinsky and Derek MacKenzie scored the other Columbus goals.

Brendan Gallagher, on a first-period power play, and Thomas Vanek got the Canadiens' goals.

Columbus outshot the home side 40-27.

One mistake

Jarred Tinordi bobbled the puck in the vicinity of Ryan Johansen.

Not a good idea.

Johansen, who had played a spectacular game, beat Carey Price for the winner.

Full value for their lead

Columbus is winning all the little battles and got the only goal of the second period, from Brandon Dubinsky.

Visitors outshot the Canadiens 13-7, 29-19 over 40 minutes.

The Canadiens' PK killed a two-man disadvantage.

Terrific 20 minutes

The game got off to a roaring start when Carey Price stopped Cam Atkinson on a breakawy eight seconds in.

That was the first of 16 shots the visitors directed at Price. The Canadiens had a dozen on Sergei Bobrovsky.

Brendan Gallagher got the Canadiens on the board with his 18th, a power-play goal from close in.

Derek MacKenzie tied it off a set play: After the Canadiens iced the puck on a power play, Mark Letestu won a faceoff and got off a shot that Price bobbled. MacKenzie crashed the net and batted it home.

Max Paciorett and Ruyan Johansen had a spirited fight that ended with the Blue Jacket on the deck.

Hello, Columbus

The Canadiens have won both previous meetings with the Blue Jackets: 5-3 at the Bell Centre on Oct. 17 and 3-2 at Columbus on Nov. 15.

David Desharnais's Shootout goal in the second game is credited with kick-starting his season.

Well, that and being dissed by Montreal mayor Denis Coderre.

Columbus is desperately fighting for a playoff spot, and the Blue Jackets have garnered 13 points in their last 18 games.

The Canadiens are riding a three-game winning streak and sit seven points north of the cutoff for postseason berths.

Columbus forward lines: Jenner-Johansen-Horton, Foligno-Anisimov-Tropp, Calvert-Dubinsky-Atkinson, MacKenzie-Letestu-Comeau

Puck drops 7:40ish.

    Again the 2 Dmen caught flat footed on the blue lie.
    Same happened against Colorado

      Exactly. Same two players. I can’t imagine three more years of Marky. The General still flashes signs of brilliance, but oh boy, it’s ring around the rosie in our end.

    BS Penalty.

  11. Seda Moss says:

    That’s a penalty, but the cross-check + interference on Patches isn’t. NHL officiating is so whack.

    nice one…

    Oh what Carey Price could do with actual D in front of him. Oh wait we seen that in Sochi.

  24. db says:

    I’d like to see us tie this up in the next 10 minutes… cmon boys

  25. Cdnman1 says:

    Price is sharp.

  26. Mondou6 says:

    This looks like the same as previous years where teams are gooning our players, and we have no answer.

    We see Price getting run a lot recently, the Bruins attacked Emelin, tonight Pacioretty. Who is our muscle, Ryan White? I guess we learned nothing from watching Eller getting put in the hospital last year.

  27. UKRAINIANhab says:

    Alright lets go

  30. Habbu says:

    Columbus looking hungry while Habs look content to try and keep it close until 5 minutes to go then they’ll turn it up a notch

    PK turned his innards into goo.

  36. kalevine says:

    this is reminding me of the Phoenix game. An opponent that looks like they can be taken, and a Habs team that can’t take advantage.

  41. Maritime Ronn says:

    Columbus hits everything it sees
    Outhitting Habs 27-8

  42. Black Horse says:

    PK gets manhandled thus knocking Price off balance. Typical Montreal D.

  43. Habbu says:

    D zone coverages are non existent

  44. UKRAINIANhab says:

    DD line slightly off right now

    Colour me confused. Why is Chucky playing with White and Weise? I like those guys, but come on.

    This has the feel of playoff physicality from CB. Interesting to see how we react in period 2.

  57. Ian Cobb says:

    MIKE, was it not Galchenyuk instead of Gallagher who scored.
    PK did not pick up his man off the face off that produced their goal;

  58. db says:

    I can’t seem to find 24CH online anywhere… does anybody have a link?

  59. RockinRey says:

    How’s the sep debate going Boone? Any chance to watch?

  60. CHicoHab says:

    Markov throws a pass not even close to DD’s stick on the pp. Misses by a mile. Ensuing face off jackets score. I put that wreck less pass on Markov instigates that goal.

  61. Frank2468 says:

    Good period just a little surprised that boys didn’t see that one coming with the face off in their zone on the PP. That’s the oldest trick in the book to slap the puck towards the net and it was a good shot as well. Don’t recall who took the face off but whoever that was lost that cleanly and a little to cleanly for my liking.

  62. Danno says:

    So many uncalled penalties. The refs are in playoff mode already it seems.

    Anyone else switching back and forth between the game and the leaders’ debate?

    Bwaaaahahahahah….

    ~~~> Mathematically eliminated…
  64. Maritime Ronn says:
    The short handed goal against on the PP was the 8th this year against the Habs
    That now ranks the Habs 5th worst in the NHL
  65. Black Horse says:
    Am I the only one that saw no bobble by Price just a nice save?
  66. johnnylarue says:
    Next to seeing a guy carried out on a stretcher, shorties are the biggest hockey buzz kill I can think of. Well, shorties *against*, anyway…
    Columbus have a good team. The physicality is fine, though I do find their ‘edge’ borders on the goonish at times. #nathanhortoneffect
    Hope da boyz come out swingin’ after the break. A good second period will go a long way towards another W. A bad second period? Not so much.
    • CJ says:
      I agree Johnny. Short handed goals are killers. I don’t have the stat in front of me, but it seems that more short handed goals have been scored this season, league wide, than seasons past. Maybe perception vs reality?
    • Da Hema says:
      I thought they pushed back well after that bizarre/possibly remarkable shortie.
      • johnnylarue says:
        I think so too. And to their credit, it’s hard to single out a goat on that shortie. That was just a well executed draw/set play.
        Good game so far!
  67. Black Horse says:
    To icen the puck on a PP is …
  68. Maritime Ronn says:
    Outshot 16-12
    Outhit 20-5.
    Bow in front of Carey and chant
    We’re not worthy. We’re not worthy
  69. WindsorHab-10 says:
    Damn Markov, how the hell do you ice the puck when You’re on the powerplay? Damn.
  70. slapshot777 says:
    Good on the Habs, Columbus trying to intimidate the Habs and it’s not working. They get a fluky goal. Habs didn’t have a good first period. I am sure the Habs will make adjustments to start the second.
  71. boing007 says:
    Habs need Galchenyuk to start piling up the goals.
    Richard R
  72. Black Horse says:
    What a bunch of kids @ this site. Throwing insults when they disagree.
  73. Danno says:
    Frankly, I’m just thankful it isn’t 3-1 B.J.’s – or worse.
