Liveblog: Game 7 – Canadiens 5 – Columbus 3 in a barnburner

Four in a row

The Canadiens kept pace with division rivals Boston and Ottawa with a 5-3 conquest of Columbus.

The Canadiens blew a 3-0 lead but got late goals – the last a shorthanded empty-netter – from Tomas Plekanec to secure two points.

Rene Bourque, Andrei Markov and rookie Michaël Bournival, with his first NHL goal, also scored for the Canadiens.

Columbus got two goals from rookie Boone Jenner and another by Ryan Johansen.

Carey Price made 30 saves to earn First Star honours.

Winning late

Tomas Plekanec broke open a 3-3 tie that was headed for overtime when he beat Sergeo Bobrovsky with 67 ticks left on the clock.

Then with Josh Gorges off for tripping, Pleks added a shorthanded empty-netter.

It ain't over

Andrei Markov's first of the season – a shorthanded shot from the point – staked the Canadiens to a 3-0 lead.

But less than a minute later, on the same power play, rookie Boone Jenner tapped a fat rebound past Carey Price.

And with P.K. Subban way up ice and Lars Eller patrolling the right point in the Columbus zone, Ryan Johansen broke away and beat Price to make it a one-goal game.

Canadiens had an 11-10 shot advantage.

Funny, he doesn't look fluish

Rene Bourque, who was too sick for morning skate, opened the scoring on a brilliant head-man pass by P.K. Subban during a Canadiens power play.

Rookie Michaël Bournival (a Liveblog fave) got his first NHL goal off tic-tac-toe pasing by Andrei Markov and that point machine (10 in six games and 20 minutes) Subban.

Canadiens outshot Columbus 14-11 in a very lively first period.

Howdy, stranger

The Blue Jackets have not played at the Bell Centre since Dec. 6, 2011, when Rick Nash beat Carey Price in a Shootout to secure a 3-2 win for the visitors.

The return of Columbus (a phrase that sends waves of anxiety through indigenous populations everywhere) launches a five-game homestand during which the Canadiens will be re-acquainting themselves with teams they did not face in the lockout season.

Nashville is at the Bell Centre on Saturday, followed by Edmonton next Tuesday, the return of Saku Koivu with his Anaheim teammates on Oct. 24 and mighty San Jose on the 26th,

Nash is no longer the face of the franchise in Columbus. Jeff Carter, who had five shots on goal in that Bell Centre game two years ago, is gone as well.

New Blue Jackets include Marian Gaborik and Brandon Dubinsky, Ryan Murphy, drafted one spot ahead of Alex Galchenyuk in 2012; and old pal James Wisniewski.

Columbus also has the reigning Vezina Trophy winner. Sergei Bobrovsky has allowed more than two goals only once in his five starts this season.

The Canadiens will be coping with the absence of Max Pacioretty, which likely will mean Top 9 ice time for Brandon Prust.

Rene Bourque has the flu and was not at the Canadiens' morning skate.

If Bourque can't go against Columbus, Michel Therrien will dress seven D and use Nathan Beaulieu on the fourth line. The lines and pairings Thursday morning: Galchenyuk-Eller-Gallagher, Prust-Desharnais-Brière, Moen-Plekanec-Gionta, Beaulieu-Bournival-White; Subban-Markov, Diaz-Gorges, Tinordi-Bouillon.

  1. Habbu says:

Bobo leaning the wrong way….expecting a pass

  2. nova scotia vees says:

The league is allowing everyone to mug Gallagher. We have to have his back. Where is our muscle? Was Parros it?

  3. Storman says:

What a fantastic nifty hands shot

  4. Adidess says:

    Wow. Deflected!

  5. Kooch7800 says:

    Wow..bad goal…I love it

“Keep your stick on the Ice”

  6. adadi says:

    Yeah baby! Bobrovsky flubbed it.

  7. RockinRey says:

    Good for Pleky!

  8. durocher says:

Bad goal, but we’ll take it

  9. db says:

    Confidence! We got this!

  10. Et le but says:

    See what I mean?

  11. SKHab says:

    Way to go Plekanec.

  12. Habbu says:

We need Parros back so bad……so that he can remind the opposition that if the lay a hand on #11……………they go to emerg

  13. topher5468 says:

Diaz is no match for Jenner

“It’s not an obsession, It’s a way of life..”

  14. Adidess says:

    Feel scared right now

  15. jols101 says:

Diaz may have some offence ability but he is brutal in his own end.

  16. Et le but says:

Take it easy…this ain’t over yet

  17. shootdapuck says:

Old habits creep back in the CH game! Blowing leads D zone chaos old nightmares!

  18. Les_Habitants85 says:

Boone is passionate Habs fan, just a little too quick on judging a player sometimes I think hahaha like at one point in the game a certain player is TERRIBLE!!! Then later that same player makes a good play and it’s DO WE LOVE THAT GUY OR WHAT?!?!?

  19. RockinRey says:

Same theme with this team . Get ahead and allow other teams to storm back

  20. Mondou6 says:

We still have no answer when faced with a big strong opponent.

We go up 3-0, then get pushed around. Columbus has had guys standing in the crease all night long, and we have no one to push them out.

We desperately need a big D-man to clear the crease. And we can’t protect a lead with a bunch of 5’6″ players.

  21. Storman says:

Boone Jenner is fffffffffff good,,reminds me of John Tonelli

  22. frontenac1 says:

Agreed. Gally is taking way too much abuse behind the play and after whistles. Need s a minder out there with him. Someone that can inflict pain.

  23. Adidess says:

    Beautiful kill!

  24. Why is it that when I come on at the end of a game, they blow a 3-0 lead and forget the game is 60 minutes and to add insult to injury, Boone is wishing we had Columbus players on our team… whoa is me and the CH… and I am a Habs fan since the 60’s but I’m sick of this BS lack of passion on our team! 20 plus years of ho hum up and down play is enough already!

  25. NLhabsfan says:

That’s 3 Phantom calls against the Habs tonight by the refs.

  26. durocher says:

Sucks that we are in this situation after the start we had and being up 3-0. It’s our fault we are down — C-bus has two PP goals and PK should not have pinched on one goal. We have to stay disciplined for 60 minutes.

    Great game by Bournival.

On the other side, David Savard looks like a keeper.

    • db says:

It wasnt as much discipline as it was sitting back on the lead and letting the other team back into the game. We need that killer instinct all game… some desperation would be nice..

  27. adadi says:

Hey Boone are you using your iPhone as the server…sheesh!

  28. Les_Habitants85 says:

Chucky will be that next stud down the middle soon enough.. He’s just not quite ready for the defensive aspects of a nhl centers game quite yet

  29. SuperHabFan says:

We have a work horse like Jenner… His name is Gallager. C’mon..

  30. adadi says:

Refs have PKs number…can you say racist!!!

  31. SKHab says:

Okay, I thought it was on the hit.

  32. Adidess says:

PK, you need to pray really hard from within that box.

    That would be very bad!

  33. teamhab says:

First home game back is always a tough one

  34. Mondou6 says:

If/when we lose this, it won’t be because of the refs, but that doesn’t change the fact that the refs have been absolutely ridiculous in this game.

WTF are they doing out there? It’s completely random craziness.

  35. Storman says:

    Penalty Kill Subban

  36. RockinRey says:

@ Boone Agree Habs need another stud down the middle . Eller is fine, Pleks is on the downside. How come every other team can draft one and identify a beast down the middle?

  37. Habcouver says:

Not near a TV… but Go Habs Go!!!

    Waiting patiently for #25

  38. SKHab says:

I want to see a replay on PKs penalty.

  39. Et le but says:

    Big kill here

  40. nova scotia vees says:

The league is letting everyone brutalize Gallagher. Someone has to have his back. And that 3rd goal was “old” Carey. Just when I thought he had turned the corner. Damn. Stay on your feet..not on your stomach.

  41. db says:

    What’s the word on Parros?

  42. Mondou6 says:

This stinks like it’s heading for a Gimmick conclusion.

  43. adadi says:

Prust looks good on any line.

  44. DipsyDoodler says:

Ron Hainsey who scored the winner for the Canes finally signed for only $2M. That would have been a perfect pickup for us.

    • shootdapuck says:

are you serious? You obviously never saw any Winnipeg games last year! A pylon, giveaway machine who wasnt signed cause hes not that good.Just like when the Habs dumped him!

  45. Adidess says:

Not a penalty. Refs evening things up there!

  46. DipsyDoodler says:

Ron Hainsey who scored the inner for the Canes finally signed for only $2M. That would have been a perfect pickup for us.

  47. Mondou6 says:

I see the HIO “server” has returned in fine form for 2013-14.

  48. J.Ambrose.OBrien says:

Daniel Briere? He’s on our team?

    I remember Dec. 31, 1975

  49. Storman says:

Would have been a nice time for a Briere there

  50. aHabGrowsInBrooklyn says:

    Leafs blow lead. Lose 3-2.

  51. NLhabsfan says:

The guys have lost that urgency in the second.Someone has to step up now.

  52. adadi says:

Leafs lose. Kadri takes a stupid penalty with 14 seconds left.

  53. jols101 says:

Therrien needs to shorten the bench. Quite just rolling all 4 lines. Should’t be the Bournival line sitting either.

  54. shootdapuck says:

Not much any presence by CH since it was 2-0! Quit !

  55. CynicalHabsfan says:

First time this season we’ve been tied in the third

  56. Les_Habitants85 says:

Ease up on Tinordi ppl, yes he’s not looking good tonite, but he’s still developing..young dmen’s mistakes are always more obvious then a young forwards

  57. Mondou6 says:

Next penalty will be on Columbus, the refs have been boning us all night.

  58. Sal from the Hammer says:

Nail biting time!!Can’t win if they stopkating.

  59. RockinRey says:

What is very clear is the Habs need an upgrade on D and need more focus on d zone coverage.

  60. Adidess says:

    How did this happen?

  61. aHabGrowsInBrooklyn says:

I’m scared. Umberger has always had the Habs’ number. Hope that just jinxed him.

  62. Storman says:

Like i said earlier Boone Jenner is going to be a stud in this league,, and Captain Gionta very selfish penalty

  63. Propwash says:

  64. SKHab says:

    Not enjoying Jenner’s celebration.

  65. RockinRey says:

    Carolina!!! love it

  66. shootdapuck says:

    Tinordi AND Bouillion are brutal!

  67. Propwash says:

Not the smartest move by Gio

  68. Storman says:

Gionta that was just plain selfish take the hit like a man

  69. habsfan0 says:

Habs 3rd SH goal of season coming up
