Liveblog: Game 7 – Canadiens 5 – Columbus 3 in a barnburner

Four in a row

The Canadiens kept pace with division rivals Boston and Ottawa with a 5-3 conquest of Columbus.

The Canadiens blew a 3-0 lead but got late goals – the last a shorthanded empty-netter – from Tomas Plekanec to secure two points.

Rene Bourque, Andrei Markov and rookie Michaël Bournival, with his first NHL goal, also scored for the Canadiens.

Columbus got two goals from rookie Boone Jenner and another by Ryan Johansen.

Carey Price made 30 saves to earn First Star honours.

Winning late

Tomas Plekanec broke open a 3-3 tie that was headed for overtime when he beat Sergeo Bobrovsky with 67 ticks left on the clock.

Then with Josh Gorges off for tripping, Pleks added a shorthanded empty-netter.

It ain't over

Andrei Markov's first of the season – a shorthanded shot from the point – staked the Canadiens to a 3-0 lead.

But less than a minute later, on the same power play, rookie Boone Jenner tapped a fat rebound past Carey Price.

And with P.K. Subban way up ice and Lars Eller patrolling the right point in the Columbus zone, Ryan Johansen broke away and beat Price to make it a one-goal game.

Canadiens had an 11-10 shot advantage.

Funny, he doesn't look fluish

Rene Bourque, who was too sick for morning skate, opened the scoring on a brilliant head-man pass by P.K. Subban during a Canadiens power play.

Rookie Michaël Bournival (a Liveblog fave) got his first NHL goal off tic-tac-toe pasing by Andrei Markov and that point machine (10 in six games and 20 minutes) Subban.

Canadiens outshot Columbus 14-11 in a very lively first period.

Howdy, stranger

The Blue Jackets have not played at the Bell Centre since Dec. 6, 2011, when Rick Nash beat Carey Price in a Shootout to secure a 3-2 win for the visitors.

The return of Columbus (a phrase that sends waves of anxiety through indigenous populations everywhere) launches a five-game homestand during which the Canadiens will be re-acquainting themselves with teams they did not face in the lockout season.

Nashville is at the Bell Centre on Saturday, followed by Edmonton next Tuesday, the return of Saku Koivu with his Anaheim teammates on Oct. 24 and mighty San Jose on the 26th,

Nash is no longer the face of the franchise in Columbus. Jeff Carter, who had five shots on goal in that Bell Centre game two years ago, is gone as well.

New Blue Jackets include Marian Gaborik and Brandon Dubinsky, Ryan Murphy, drafted one spot ahead of Alex Galchenyuk in 2012; and old pal James Wisniewski.

Columbus also has the reigning Vezina Trophy winner. Sergei Bobrovsky has allowed more than two goals only once in his five starts this season.

The Canadiens will be coping with the absence of Max Pacioretty, which likely will mean Top 9 ice time for Brandon Prust.

Rene Bourque has the flu and was not at the Canadiens' morning skate.

If Bourque can't go against Columbus, Michel Therrien will dress seven D and use Nathan Beaulieu on the fourth line. The lines and pairings Thursday morning: Galchenyuk-Eller-Gallagher, Prust-Desharnais-Brière, Moen-Plekanec-Gionta, Beaulieu-Bournival-White; Subban-Markov, Diaz-Gorges, Tinordi-Bouillon.

So after the Markov goal I called my dad to rave about how fantastic we’re looking so far this season. Now we’re gonna choke this game away, setting off a long losing streak. This one’s on me, guys.

Even 5 minutes of JM hockey results in a loss!

  9. slapshot777 says:

Looking at the injury that patches got on Tuesday, it looked like he grabbed the back of the leg or groin area. I don’t think it is a knee injury.

  10. Mavid says:

anyone else lose their sound on TSN Montreal? I have had no sound since the 2and period

  11. shootdapuck says:

Is it true someone filed a missing persons report on DD?

  12. Adidess says:

Haha, PK is sitting out a shift or two because he pitched and Eller did a bad job covering. MT at his best!

  13. Maksimir says:

uh-oh… this is turning.. need to make it out of the period… where’s Boone’s patented “Beware the late one?”

  14. shootdapuck says:

Columbus forecheck is hammering DD Brier and Diaz the shy boys

  15. aversglay says:

    White needs a goal here.

  16. slyCH says:

Eller very well should break his stick after that one.

  17. Propwash says:

That shot was a frigging laser.

  18. RockinRey says:

Nice little montage on Gally. Energizer . Takes a beating

  19. shootdapuck says:

Diaz just cant stop dishing the suicide passes!

  20. topher5468 says:

“What are the chances that Bournival sticks with the team full time on the third line next year?

I’m saying %75. We’ve got space opening up next year and he’s got to be endearing himself to the coaching staff with his performance so far. The only real questions revolve around his offensive abilities”

Man I gotta stop coming to this board.

  22. Habilis says:

OK, I know i would get beer bottles thrown at me for saying this if we were in a bar, but this is the internet, so:
Imagine if MB had listened to some of us and signed PK to an 8 year deal for like 5 or 6 mil AAV?

    Le sigh.

  23. RockinRey says:

@Boone- PK all he does is pad everyone else’s stats and make them better

  24. jols101 says:

1st period was awesome, this one not so much. Must be hard to keep up that 1st period pace all game.

  25. J.Ambrose.OBrien says:

For those not watching RDS, they showed this little boy in the stands with a CBJ jersey on. Terminally ill. Columbus was contacted an he was invited into their dressing room for autographs. He looked so thrilled!

    I remember Dec. 31, 1975

  26. Strummer says:

Aren’t we lucky we didn’t give Wisniewski that ridiculous contract?

“It’s just an opinion – I could be wrong”

  27. SKHab says:

Weird, can’t get a pass through.

  28. Adidess says:

Our D is generating so much offense right now, it’s incredible. The PK-Markov pairing is just dominant out there. Every forward pass from either guy leads to something good. I’m really impressed.

  29. shootdapuck says:

more PP rehab for DD and Briere

  30. AK_PK_Usay says:

DD and Briere earned every second on that PP…

  31. Savardian Spin-o-rama says:

Rds reporter saw max in the building minus crutches.

    Scooped again!!

  32. DipsyDoodler says:

Max walking without crutches at Bell Ctr. Definitely not a ruptured knee ligament in that case.

  33. RockinRey says:

Let the Beast loose! Tee one up PK

  34. db says:

Good to hear! Patches not on crutches..

  35. Et le but says:

    Let’s bury 1 here

  36. shootdapuck says:

  39. J.Ambrose.OBrien says:

What a touching story about the littlest Bluejacket fan, Nicholas Gagne

    I remember Dec. 31, 1975

  40. db says:

So if White fell on that battle, would we get the PP?

  41. Et le but says:

Don’t step off the gas boys! Keep those goals coming…

  47. AK_PK_Usay says:

Reffs are trying sooo hard… that was a clean body check by Subban, and then some guy trips Prust, no call…

I know Markov scored, but Prusts kneee did not twist nicely…

when all think alike, no one is thinking very much

  48. Adidess says:

Well, Subban is punished for having a body part called elbow.

  49. Storman says:

Boone Jenner is going to be a stud in this league

  59. DipsyDoodler says:

    Yeah Marky!

  60. slyCH says:

Officials doing their best to help the Jackets in the game.

  61. slapshot777 says:

Refereeing never ceases to amaze me. I truly do think they have it in for PK. Every time he tries a big hit or goes near a player they are watching for any little thing to call on him.

  62. the habinator says:

What the f #%# was that call

  63. Savardian Spin-o-rama says:

Refs got it in for pk I tell ya.

  64. db says:

  72. Storman says:
