Liveblog: Game 68 – Frankie Boo wins a wild one

This is why we love hockey

With 3:22 left in the game, your Montreal Canadiens were dead in the water.

They trailed 4-1, and Ottawa goaltender Robin Lehner was a wall.

Then Lars Eller scored his first goal since Jan.2.

A little over a minute later, Brian Gionta made it a one-goal game.

With the Senators shorthanded and Crey Price off for an extra attacker, David Desharnais tied the game with a fraction of a second left.

P.K. Subban assisted on all three goals.

And Francis Bouillon – of all people – won it in OT.

Game of the Season!

And Francis Bouillon's first goal of the season wins it.

Craziest game EVER!

Three goals in three minutes.

P.K. assists on all of 'em.

On to OT

Sens take lead

After the visitors had a go-ahead goal disallowed because of interference on Carey Price, Zack Smith was sprung in alone by an exquisite pass from Erik Karlsson.

Smith's shot dribbled through Price's legs and he poked it in.

Ottawa outshot the Canadiens 16-9.

Scoring woes persist

Daniel Brière scored on the first shot of the game.

Robin Lehner stopped the next 16 shots he faced.

Jason Spezza beat Carey Price with Ottawa's first shot, after Lars Eller blew coverage on the Ottawa trailer.

Canadins outshot the Senators 17-4.

But it's tied.

Mutual urgency

Your Montreal Canadiens have lost three in a row and have fallen behind Toronto and Tampa Bay in the Atlantic Division standings.

Ottawa is chasing Philadelphia, Detroit, New Jersey and Washington for a wild-card playoff spot.

Both teams need a win, which should make for a lively Saturday evening at the Bell Centre.

And Carey Price is back!

This is the fourth of five games between the teams this season. The Canadiens lost 4-1 in Ottawa on Nov. 7 and 4-3 in Overtime at the Bell Centre on Jan. 4. They beat the Senators 5-4 in OT at the Canadian Tire Centre on Jan. 16.

The Canadiens can't score – seven goals over their last five games, 29th in the league in 5-on-5 scoring – and coach Michel Therrien is still tinkering with line combinations after 67 regular-season games.

Trade Deadline acquisition Thomas Vanek will play on his less-favoured right side with David Desharnais and Max Pacioretty, while Brendan Gallagher rejoins Lars Eller and Alex Galchenyuk. Daniel Brière is the latest addition to the Tomas Plekanec-Brian Gionta duo. The fourth line will be Travis Moen, Brandon Prust and Dale Weise.

Time to bench Emelin. Talk about a bad pinch.

  2. Captain aHab says:

That’s not who Kaarlson was passing to.

Me skull and crossbones arn’t the only thing I plan on raisin’ tonight.

    • CJ says:

Of course not. The Sens drive me crazy for this exact reason. Did you see their tying goal with a minute to go against the Predators? Double deflection, off a skate and in.

      Bury these guys!

  3. CJ says:

    Can you get any luckier?

  4. Seda Moss says:

Moen has a shooting percentage of 2.0%. Hands of Moen is backed up by hard data.

  5. jols says:

    Boone, did you fall asleep?

  7. CJ says:

PK, right on cue! Best hit in a month.

  11. habs_54321 says:

for the minutes he plays and the players he plays with briere has some of the best production value on the team

  12. adadi says:

Hey Boone, you’re missing a helluva game…where are you..we’re missing your witticisms.

  13. Seda Moss says:

MT is a genius! Keep Tinner in the press box!

  14. Captain aHab says:

And there we go! Habs 100% need to shelve ALL pre-game ceremonies until the one where we hoist the Championship Flag.

Me skull and crossbones arn’t the only thing I plan on raisin’ tonight.

  15. Sal from the Hammer says:

That’s the first time they scored first in a while, right?

  16. NLhabsfan says:

    What a shot

  17. Harditya says:

Wow we could have used him in playoffs against Sens last post season

  18. Danno says:

Congrats Carey Price and PK Subban, Montreal’s Gold Medal Members!

  28. ah Price is back finally something to look forward to. I’ll be honest I expected the habs to lose every game while he was out. It’s no secret, our team isn’t very good and Price is the only reason we are where we are.

That and very poor coaching, but that’s been beat to death. Until the Habs realize politics and hockey don’t win cups we’ll be second to everyone.

ok pvr time, off to the Wheat Kings game, if they win they’re in.

  29. adadi says:

Which Hab’s coach is/was worse. Michel Therrien or Mario Tremblay?

  30. CJ says:

Hudon and Gregorie back together on the same line this afternoon. Hudon had a hat trick, while Gregorie had two assists.

  31. bender69 says:

if Price can score a couple of goals we might have a chance!!

So is tonight the second coming of Jesus Price?

    Bullet holes in my mirrors . . . .

    Who takes Tinordi’s spot?

    EDIT – Weaver.

  34. CJ says:

Tinordi a scratch? Colour me confused.

On an aside, maybe it’s just me but these 7:00 pm Saturday night games don’t seem to get underway till closer to 7:30. I’ve been waiting all day, drop the puck!

  35. slapshot777 says:

MT better start getting this team winning or he can file for early EI because I can’t see him back for a third season. I hate this struggling for a playoff spot every damn year

To you from failing hands we throw the torch, be yours to hold it high.

    • UKRAINIANhab says:

We didnt struggle for one last year

      • slapshot777 says:

I am not just referring to last season, with regards to struggling for a playoff spot. With MT he seems not to be getting the best out of his players and if he can’t do that then it is no good continuing on with that trend.

To you from failing hands we throw the torch, be yours to hold it high.

  36. adadi says:

It’s all part of MT’s secret plan Boone.

  37. UKRAINIANhab says:

Tinordi did cost us some goals….

  38. Ian Cobb says:

OK I am ready to watch a good hockey game tonight, Its been to long!

  39. Blondie says:

Let’s go Habs! We’re way overdue for some finish around the net, I think they figure it out a bit tonight. At least one for Vanek, 5 – 2 Habs.

  40. Danno says:

Time to crack open a nice cold Beau’s Lugtread beer. Vankleek Hill’s finest!

    Go Habs Go!!!
I actually like this lineup, the only niggle I have is Beaulieu still being in Hamilton. He makes the Habs a better team.

  42. frontenac1 says:

Hope the Stache is in tonight. We need him.

  43. stevieray says:

Tonite we,ll see what kind of team we have and how big there gonads are !…..a must win for sure is needed…Hope pricey isn’t to rusty…I also think the fans are getting a. Real disservice by keeping Beaulieu in Hamilton. I would grade him a step ahead of Tiny

  46. HabinBurlington says:

Gehlsen, sounds like your havng Rouladen tonight, one of my favourites!

  47. Mick says:

How long will it take MT to change the lines up

  48. boonie says:

I only caught a couple of minutes of the B’s-Hurricanes game. The amazing thing about Boston is their depth. Each of their top 9 forwards played between 14-17 minutes. Other than Chara, none of their D played more than 21 minutes. Chara 23 minutes.

Granted, it was Carolina but hey. Iggy, Krejci, Lucic, Eriksson, Bergeron, Smith, Soderberg, Kelly and Marchand each played between 14 and 16 minutes – give or take a few seconds.

This team can roll three good lines and their fourth can play a specific role as well. I have to believe that keeps them well-rested long term and for peak moments in games when Julien needs a boost.

Contenders obviously rely on top end talent and a hot goalie. I have to believe that the advantages among the supporting cast play an underappreciated role.

What’s the HIO consensus on the quality of our depth and the way MT deploys it?

    • piper says:

The Bruins advantage is that only Krug and Marchand are under 6ft and Marchand doesn’t play small.

    • SC-24 says:

boonie – if you think we have anywhere near the dept the Bruins have. I don’t know what planet you’re from. Bruins are gonna be one of the last to fall this year in the playoffs and unless they have some bad luck along the way. Lord Stanley is theirs to win. They have a complete team from top to bottom. can play it what ever way you want, can score, good defense and a real good goalie and very well coached.

  49. theox_8 says:

This should be a good one , happy Saturday all !!

  50. Cape Breton says:

Is Pricey in tonite because he’s healthy or is it regardless of his bad knee or groin he must play because the team is without decent backup goaltending?

  51. Danno says:

I want to hear Pierre Houde yell out “Le tir et le buuuuuuuuuuuutttt!!!!” many more times than he has lately for the Habs tonight.

  53. Lafleurguy says:

Who’ll score before t’others, Eller, Vanek, Weaver?

  54. UKRAINIANhab says:

Tfc up 2 on Seattle for the football fans on here. Defoe still belongs in Europe not MLS.

  55. Captain aHab says:

Any pre-game ceremony tonight? Please say no. We need a win.

Me skull and crossbones arn’t the only thing I plan on raisin’ tonight.

  56. marvin20 says:

let hope the habs wear their big boy pants to night. the last 3 games against Ottawa Montreal look terrified and totally intimidated.

  57. Haberoooo13 says:

    3-1 Habs tonight…Vanek scores 2

    Lafleur coming out rather gingerly…

  58. fastfreddy says:

Habs need a win tonight, they’ve got to keep TO and TBay in their sights.

    CH = Les Glorieux!!!

  59. habstrinifan says:

Withdrawal symptoms setting in. But I gotta stay strong. Day 1 of my ‘Anti Therrien’s Habs’ treatment plan.

I leave with one frightening note. If you see the same PP schemes tonite as you did first period against Boston… dont be shocked if it results in a PP shorty.

  60. danp says:

I am stuck at a conference in Orlando. Does anyone know a site where I can stream the game? Thanks!

  61. Dunboyne Mike says:

Thanks, Gehlsen, for the Bozon update.

I have a link for sending email wishes to him via the hospital. Will I post it here? Nice idea but potential hazards?

  62. Timo says:

I am wondering… has every Habs coach (with exception of Randy Cunnyworth because he wasn’t french) always gotten a pass from the l’antichambre crew? You never ever hear them criticize Therrien… not once.

  63. Gehlsen says:

    @Trini and others
    Tim Bozon update

    Les Habitant!

  64. Timo says:

Let’s me shock all of you – I don’t have high hopes for tonight’s game.

    • jlgib1019 says:

It doesn’t matter. The end of year result cant be better than last year. The team isn’t as good. Price is a little better,P.K and Eller are worse,Galch,Gally and Tinordi are the same,Markov,Gio and Moen are a year older, and Briere is useless. It’s almost the exact same lineup that got demolished in 5 last year.Only Murray adds any toughess

      • Dunboyne Mike says:

        Ok here’s a silly post.
Just prior to the Bruins game, jlg, I agreed with you 100% on some excellent point you made in a finely-wrought post.
Before I could reply, some minor domestic events overtook me. Now i can’t remember you point!
So, um, hear! Hear! Keep ’em coming!

    • frontenac1 says:

“High” hopes. I’m there already amigo.

  65. SC-24 says:

well at least MT improved the lines a bit and if he doesn’t win he has one more move. Put the Gallys with Plekanec final straw still can’t win get ready for 2014-2015.

    • Captain aHab says:

Regardless of what happens tonight, leave these lines together for a few games and THEN see what happens….

Therrien needs to show some confidence that guys can generate chemistry on their own but shuffling them constantly isn’t helping.

Me skull and crossbones arn’t the only thing I plan on raisin’ tonight.

    • jlgib1019 says:

Seeing we have 2 top line players(Pacs/Vanek) 1 second liner(Gally),3 third liners (Pleks,Galch,DD) and 10 fourth liners, does it really matter?

  66. 24 Cups says:

Some interesting Ottawa facts you may want to know.

    – Ottawa has taken 5 out of their last 14 points during the last 7 games. They just lost games to Edmonton, Calgary and Nashville which really hurt their playoff hopes.
    – 4 or more goals against during their last 10 games
    – GD of -28, Montreal is presently -3
    – Home record of 15-13-6 so far this year
    – 3rd worst defending team in the NHL
    – 5th worst PK in the NHL
    – 3rd most shots allowed per game
    – 29 goals against during last 7 games (2-4-1). Montreal has only scored 8 goals in their last 5 games
    – The Sens have given up 40 or more shots a game 14 times this year
    – Robin Lehner starts in goal tonight with a record of 25/7/11/4/,912/3.05
    – Ottawa has scored no fewer than 3 goals a game during their last 6 against Montreal
    – Montreal has scored 2 or fewer goals during 18 or their 34 home games this year. They have been outscored 13-3 in their last 3 games while going 1/13 on the PP
    – Jason Spezza has 60 points in his last 52 games against the Habs
    – The line of Michalek/Spezza/Hemsky have 15 points in their last two games
    – Clarke MacArthur, my UFA choice for the Habs, is presently at 19/25/44/7PPG/5GWG. I know it’s easy to look back but damn it, Janet.

  67. habs-fan-84 says:

I feel like the Habs don’t have the greatest record for these National games. Hoping for a convincing win tonight!

  68. CJ says:

Can’t wait till puck drop. With the implications for both teams, this has the feeling of a playoff game. A win versus a loss tonight would hold major implications for both clubs. Go Habs! Cheers, CJ

  69. Seda Moss says:

I’m at Walmart right now stocking up on troll repellant for tonight. Would anyone like me to pick them up a can?

  70. Luke says:

Woo. Go Habs! Fresh bread. Cold Beers. Nice Steak. Habs in 2 hours. Can’t ask for more.

  71. Hobie Hansen says:

    Drop the puck already!
