Liveblog: Game 66 – Brutal road trip ends with shutout loss

EllerSJ

Never in doubt

The game wasn't three minutes old when Tommy Wingels poked a loose puck past Peter Budaj.

The Canadiens were on a power play, and the shorty was a harbinger of what was to come in a dominant performance by the home team.

Matt Irwin's goal, 1:54 into the second period, ended Budaj's night. And Matt Nieto beat Dustin Tokarski as the Sharks outshot the Canadiens 19-8 in the middle period.

Logan Couture scored 43 seconds into the third period.

The Canadiens were outshot 33-27.

Garbage time

Logan Couture made it 4-0 43 seconds into the period.

That made for 19:17 of both teams going through the motions.

The rout is on

Matt Irwin's goal ended Peter Budaj's night after 21:54 in the Canadiens' net.

Dustin Tokarski was beaten by Matt Nieto after Lars Eller coughed the puck up at the Canadiens blueline.

Shots were 19-8 for the Sharks.

Down early

The game wasn't three minutes old when Tommy Wingels poked the puck past Peter Budaj while killing a Sharks penalty.

The Canadiens goaltender was brutal on the play, but Budaj rebounded as the period progressed.

The Canadiens' penalty kill was perfect, including a brief period of 5-on-3.

Canadiens outshot the Sharks 9-7.

Into the Shark tank

The Canadiens will try for a .500 road trip when they visit San Jose Saturday night.

Winning won't be easy.

The Sharks are 23-4-4 on home ice this season.

And the Canadiens have not won in San Jose since Nov. 23, 1999.

The Shark Tank was then called the San Jose Arena. After a few changes over the years, the rink is now the SAP Center, naming rights having been acquired by a German software company.

San Jose beat the Canadiens 2-0 at the Bell Centre in October. Antti Niemi hasn't had a shutout since.

Despite some pro-Toker sentiment among the hockey coaches (myself included) here at HIO, Peter Budaj gets the start.

Puck drops 10:10ish.

Check back later for live game blogging.

• Milestones: Daniel Brière will play his 900th NHL game tonight. And Chantal Machabée began her broadcasting career on March 8, 1984.

Really, I don’t think that was. Trip, the guy fell

  2. Timo says:

Haha… that is going to be a great night.

  3. adadi says:

Budaj is great if he plays one game every 15 nights. He is not an every game type of guy. Pricer better come back soon.

  4. Mondou6 says:

The back room at Chez Paree is better lit than this rink. At least that’s what I’ve heard. :)

  5. UKRAINIANhab says:

    Plekanec shorty.

  6. habsfan0 says:

Watch Budaj shut out the Sharks the rest of the way.

  7. CalgaryHab says:

The clown operating the main camera angle is terrible. Fast, jerky, partial zooms in and out. It’s always this way out of San Jose. Like watching the Blair witch project.

  8. Slackman says:

2 minutes for playing for the Montreal Canadiens

“When the going get’s weird, the weird turn pro”

  9. danhabsfan says:

    Anyone see a hold?

  10. Prop says:

    Here’s an idea…avoid taking penalties…

Tiny in the box. This isn’t looking good.

    TINORDI!!!!

  13. Sportfan says:

    That goal sucked.

  14. CJ says:

Shifting to the positive, that was a great rush by Tinordi.

The kid is night and day from the beginning of the season. IMO, the pairing with PK is great.

  15. Mondou6 says:

I was half expecting Budaj to kick the puck into the net on that icing.

  16. jols says:

This high angle, low quality camera is driving me nuts. Budaj isn’t helping either.

  17. Habcouver says:

Is this a cut and paste of comments from last game?

  18. danhabsfan says:

The boys better put on A Good effort or I have to go to bed. I work early and lose an hours sleep.

  19. Timo says:

I say they look tired. Too much traveling, not enough sleep, umm… oh yeah, many players still jet lagged, late start time, too warm in SJ, umm… altitude difference, crappy camera angle, humidity… no wonder.

  20. MannyR says:

    C’mon boys…let’s get it back.

  21. Mondou6 says:

Is Price ever coming back? This is starting to sound like he’s going to miss 3 weeks.

  22. Storman says:

70′s goaltending in a smoked filled arena

  23. ffenliv says:

Budaj is a fine backup. A starter, though, he ain’t. Anyone who thought Budaj could step in to cover for a Price injury for more than a game or two was deluding themselves.

Just gonna have to ride the roller coaster until Price returns.

    • habs-fan-84 says:

The last week has shown the difference between being a starter and a backup.

    • DipsyDoodler says:

He’s not a fine backup actually.

      —–
      Moving. Forward.

      • ffenliv says:

I think he gets the job done. Before this stretch, he won mostly when needed, and had decent numbers.

Rare is the team that has a backup that can step in and make you not notice the starter is out.

I don’t see what there is not to like about Budaj as backup, despite his obvious shortcomings here as a starter.

  24. johnnylarue says:

Love Budaj, but I can’t accept that.

  25. UKRAINIANhab says:

    Ughhhh

  26. JF says:

Pathetic. Game might as well be over.

  27. Slackman says:

Disgusting. Absolutely brutal. Budaj is a moron.

“When the going get’s weird, the weird turn pro”

  28. Rob Maguire says:

Worse goal of the season? I’m open to other possibilities.

  29. habsfan0 says:

Habs goalies have given up a few strange goals on this road trip.

  30. temekuhabs says:

    FFS!!! Brutal budaj

  31. smiler2729 says:

WHAT THE McF*** WAS THAT BUDAJJJJ?

  34. big_green_puffin says:

I say we send out Murray to obliterate niemi, just to send the message!

  35. danhabsfan says:

What a bone head move by Budaj… Pull him!

  36. habs-fan-84 says:

The last two games Budaj has allowed two terrible first goals. Deflating.

  37. Danno says:

He had the puck. Budaj should have stayed down…

Budaj gift wraps it and the butt kicking has started

  45. Clay says:

Perhaps I spoke too soon when praising Budaj…man, that was ugly.

Wow… the camera is sooo far at Shark Tank. Terrible view.

  56. habs-fan-84 says:

    Poor lighting.

  57. Clay says:

As far as I’m concerned, Budaj has for the most part played great this season, and deserves the start.
On another note, boo to the CBC for showing a couple of bottom feeding Canadian teams instead of our beloved Habs here in the west. I would love to watch in English tonight.

All French version of O Canada. I think that’s the first time all year that I’ve heard that.

  59. db says:

Damn. Canucks-Flames take over CBC out west…

  60. jols says:

Interesting a full French national anthem. Sounded great except for the crazy feedback.

  61. habsfan0 says:

    what’s with the feedback?

  62. habs_54321 says:

why not pair weaver with markov instead of emelin? he’s a mobile right shot dman who makes minimal mistakes this would allow emelin to play his natural side with subban and put tinordi with murray for a shutdown pair

    subban emelin
    markov weaver
    murray tinordi

  63. Habcouver says:

The game ain’t important for Nucks anymore. May as well win the opening fight…. maybe.

Game hasn’t started yet and Emelin is getting ripped a new ahole. The inmates are angry tonight.

  66. db says:

If the Habs play a strong defensive game they have a chance to win it. Some goal support would be nice too. I don’t normally go with predictions but I’ll say a 1 goal game… MTL 3-2

  67. jols says:

Nope Boone, I don’t but whenever I feel like that they usually win.

  68. habsfan0 says:

The HIO clock seems to have leapt ahead 2 hours tonight.

  69. D Man says:

    Sob, sob, Leafs 4-3.

You can’t be both a Habs and a Leafs fan

  70. 416erHabsFan says:

Does anybody remember the last time Emelin threw a hit?

  71. D Man says:

Rask with a Johnny Bower poke check save in the shoot-out. Plus 2 off the stick shaft and one off the post. Ugh+

You can’t be both a Habs and a Leafs fan

  72. UKRAINIANhab says:

    Yuck.
