Liveblog: Game 66 – Brutal road trip ends with shutout loss

Never in doubt

The game wasn't three minutes old when Tommy Wingels poked a loose puck past Peter Budaj.

The Canadiens were on a power play, and the shorty was a harbinger of what was to come in a dominant performance by the home team.

Matt Irwin's goal, 1:54 into the second period, ended Budaj's night. And Matt Nieto beat Dustin Tokarski as the Sharks outshot the Canadiens 19-8 in the middle period.

Logan Couture scored 43 seconds into the third period.

The Canadiens were outshot 33-27.

Garbage time

Logan Couture made it 4-0 43 seconds into the period.

That made for 19:17 of both teams going through the motions.

The rout is on

Matt Irwin's goal ended Peter Budaj's night after 21:54 in the Canadiens' net.

Dustin Tokarski was beaten by Matt Nieto after Lars Eller coughed the puck up at the Canadiens blueline.

Shots were 19-8 for the Sharks.

Down early

The game wasn't three minutes old when Tommy Wingels poked the puck past Peter Budaj while killing a Sharks penalty.

The Canadiens goaltender was brutal on the play, but Budaj rebounded as the period progressed.

The Canadiens' penalty kill was perfect, including a brief period of 5-on-3.

Canadiens outshot the Sharks 9-7.

Into the Shark tank

The Canadiens will try for a .500 road trip when they visit San Jose Saturday night.

Winning won't be easy.

The Sharks are 23-4-4 on home ice this season.

And the Canadiens have not won in San Jose since Nov. 23, 1999.

The Shark Tank was then called the San Jose Arena. After a few changes over the years, the rink is now the SAP Center, naming rights having been acquired by a German software company.

San Jose beat the Canadiens 2-0 at the Bell Centre in October. Antti Niemi hasn't had a shutout since.

Despite some pro-Toker sentiment among the hockey coaches (myself included) here at HIO, Peter Budaj gets the start.

Puck drops 10:10ish.

Check back later for live game blogging.

• Milestones: Daniel Brière will play his 900th NHL game tonight. And Chantal Machabée began her broadcasting career on March 8, 1984.

  1. jols says:

The only way this night doesn’t end as a complete disaster hockey wise is if our Habs pull off a big upset tonight.

  2. Prop says:

  3. Timo says:

Does anyone need any more signs that Habs will lose tonight and will lose bad?

  4. johnnylarue says:

    Gawd damned Leafs from hell…

  5. UKRAINIANhab says:

Leafs better lose…gawwd nother 3 pointer..

  6. jols says:

Everyone is getting points tonight in the standings. Habs need a huge effort tonight to keep their cushion.

  7. johnnylarue says:

Bah! Point for the stinkin’ Leafs…

    • Habilis says:

Three point games are the worst. I don’t know the stats but I’m betting that the frequency of them goes up at this point in the season too.
      Hate em.

  8. EL_PRESEDENTE says:

I don’t know about you guys, but im expecting another show from 4 million dollar pylon Emelin tonight!

Is MB the GM of the people? Or are the people the GM of MB?

    • db says:

I found it odd the he extended Emelin this season because of his work ethic off the ice. He hadn’t played a game yet and was rewarded with a 4 year deal.

    • CJ says:

Keep in mind that Emelin is not making $4.1 million this season. Emelin is making $2 million this year. His four year deal kicks in next season.

  10. Timo says:

Yes baby! Another 3 point game, FFS.

  11. Sportfan says:

Lol Halak in Washington is funny, hey aren’t you the guy that forced the Capitals to become a really boring team?

    …aaand Flyers tie it again

  13. Danno says:

    Flyers tie it!

Updates, highlights & great discussions on all things Habs

  14. johnnylarue says:

The RDS ‘B Team’ is a significant drop-off in quality from the Houde/Denis.

Play-by-play guy has the unfortunate habit of adding an “e” syllable to the end of every last name… a la “Patri-que Roy”.

I’m getting the sense that the talent pool is as diluted in the broadcast booth (in both official languages) as it is on the ice.

  15. db says:

Goal Flyers! Both teams will get points…

  16. Prop says:

CBC’s reaction when the Leafs took the lead…

  17. B says:

Empty netter sealed it, Dogs lost 4-2. They are 9 points out a play off spot with 19 games left (and 10 of their last 12 games are on the road). Tough haul ahead.

    –Go Habs Go!–

  18. 24 Cups says:

Looking at the scoreboard, every game in our conference has gone against us tonight (Columbus hasn’t started yet). The Habs really need to win one of the games against San Jose or Boston.

  19. db says:

Will the Flyers ever have an elite goalie?

  20. Danno says:

Bruins and TBL going to OT tied 3-3 and will split three points

“Hey Richard, two minutes for looking so good!”
Updates, highlights & great discussions on all things Habs

  21. Timo says:

Is it just me or does Dougie Hamilton looks… umm… mildly special. The insistence of the announcers on calling him Dougie doesn’t really help.

  22. Millsie says:

Booner, it’s Lalongo. And yes he was.

    • Mattyleg says:

The only funny things he ever did was to relentlessly call Alfredsson ‘Krusty’ because of his hair in the early 2000s, and is insistence on calling Danny Boy ‘Biere’.

      —Hope Springs Eternal—

  23. Mattyleg says:

    Stupid 3-point game in Tampa.

    —Hope Springs Eternal—

  24. Mattyleg says:

Holy Moses, Boychuck just got away with assault and no call.

    —Hope Springs Eternal—

  25. Timo says:

I would take Simmonds over Moen or White any day of the week.

  26. Mattyleg says:

Squeaky bum time in Tampa Bay.

    —Hope Springs Eternal—

  27. Mattyleg says:

Boone, I imagine they’ll either switch it to RDS Info, or start the Habs’ game there.

    —Hope Springs Eternal—

  28. jols says:

A shortie on this PP would be fantastic.

  29. Mattyleg says:

Please, please tell me the HNIC gang are weeping, or screeching loudly…

    —Hope Springs Eternal—

  30. jols says:

Timo, you are bringing the Flyers back into this game by yourself. 2 goals. Keep it up!!!

  31. D Mex says:

Laffs working their magic, yet again …

    ALWAYS Habs –
    D Mex

  32. Donkey Hoat says:

Leafs meltdown is on…let it roll!

  33. boing007 says:

    Timo Nen Scores!

    Richard R

  34. Prop says:

    Baaaahahahaha Flyers just tied it.

  35. Timo says:

Yes!!! Go Flyers (and I just threw up a bit in my mouth)

  36. B says:

Blunden scores his 13th in the 3rd (PP from Dumont and St.Pierre) to make it 3-2 Penguins with about 6 minutes to go in the 3rd.

    –Go Habs Go!–

  37. JohninTruro says:

Hey they just mentioned my Truro Bearcats!

  38. showey47 says:

Picked up this old Artis goalie stick for $20. It looks like it says 1984 and CSSR on it. Any idea who I can send this pic to who can figure out who signed it?

  39. D Man says:

Watching the Bruins and just saw a shot of Marchand and Chara standing side by sidwe looking up at the reply of a waved off goal and was waiting for the theme from Deliverance …….Da da da da da da da da da.

You can’t be both a Habs and a Leafs fan

  40. CJ says:

    Serious question;

Is it too late for Ryan Miller to make a push for the Vezina trophy? I have a feeling he is going to end up with some very decent numbers (GAA and save percentage should both improve). His win loss record won’t be great, but considering where he was playing it’s very respectable.

    Opinions? …..

  41. Mattyleg says:

Holy crap, Julien obviously forgot to put on sunscreen down in Tampa.

His head looks like one of those Budweiser Goal Lights.

    —Hope Springs Eternal—

  42. Danno says:

Ahhh shut your pie hole Julien!

“Hey Richard, two minutes for looking so good!”
Updates, highlights & great discussions on all things Habs

  43. Timo says:

Whoa… a bit too much time in the sun for Julien. Wicked sun burn on his bold ugly head.

  44. Timo says:

Vanek is very well spoken. Now, hope he can start putting some points on the board.

  45. habs-hampton says:

Wow, what horrible hooking call on Tampa on a great backcheck play.

  46. Chris says:

In case anybody missed the Sergey Tolchinsky goal in the OHL last night, check this bad boy out. If Connor McDavid or Nathan MacKinnon are the next Crosby, Tolchinsky might be the next Datsyuk. Phenomenal stick-handler if the games I’ve seen him play.

  47. jols says:

Philly needs to score 2 in the 3rd and win it in regulation. No 3 pointer tonight.

  48. adadi says:

Wow. 43% of the posters here think the Habs can win the cup thus year. I’d like to smoke what they’re smoking.

  49. FormalWare says:

    Go, Flyers (tonight, only)!

    WWSD (What Would SubbieDoo?)

  50. Mattyleg says:

    Good stuff Philly.
Makin’ the Princess look like a toad.

    —Hope Springs Eternal—

  51. Timo says:

Yes!!! Philly scores! Timo T! That’s right, baby.

  52. Timo says:

Wow, Russia already with 12 medals in paralympics. Next closest country has 5.

  53. HabFab says:

Chantal began her broadcasting career 30 years ago… wow!!
    Looking good baby!

  54. Mattyleg says:

I don’t know how anyone can watch HNIC.
Just had it on there for a couple of minutes.
    Had to change it.

    —Hope Springs Eternal—

  55. Timo says:

That Maclaren Rosenhill fight had the opposite effect… the game kinda died down after that. What a total bore.

  56. Timo says:

I wonder if Michael Therrien worked on his power play in practice or he just went back to practicing 5 on 0.

  57. jols says:

Hartnell’s look is spreading through the Flyers lineup. lol

  58. CJ says:

Watching the Leafs Flyers kinda reminds me of watching the first match on Saturday afternoon during WWF broadcasts as a kid. Two nobodies going at it as we waited for the main event. I’m done watching Earthquake beat up Jim Sloan from Glen Falls New York. I want to see Hulk Hogan fight The Ultimate Warrior.

Sorry, that’s maybe not the best analogy, but this Tim Bozon situation has me thinking about family. My brother, who has relocated from Toronto to Boston, is still a best friend. As little boys, hockey night in Canada aside, we both loved wresting and didn’t miss the afternoon program when we found ourselves at home.

Enjoy the preliminary match folks. Main event is 1.5 hours away. Cheers, CJ

  59. Storman says:

Keeping on my Don Cherry pre game laughs for a moment,, besides hearing Lelongo and Bieska over and over from Cherry,, my favorite all time name gaffe by Cherry was when he called James van Riemsdyk,,Vanreimsbrouck,,,, honorable mention goes to Bob Cole and Paciorelly..

  60. FormalWare says:

5 goals in the first 9-1/2 minutes of the second period. 3-2 Lightning over Bruins.

A win in regulation for Either of these teams helps the Habs. (Now, watch them go to overtime.)

    WWSD (What Would SubbieDoo?)

  61. Storman says:

Is it just me should i put the Jameson down, or does anyone else have trouble not laughing at this ingenious piano edit of Don Cherry.

  62. B says:

Dumont’s 15th gave the Dogs a 1-0 lead after the first period, but Tom Kostopoulos scores his 21st on a PP 2:21 into the second to give the Penguins a 2-1 lead.

    –Go Habs Go!–

    • CJ says:

I see McCarron has an assist and is plus 1 tonight, midway through the second. Fucale had another shut out, albeit versus a light workload.

      • B says:

An assist is nice, but I would like to see a goal from him. He had a little goal spurt mid Feb, but has only had 1 goal in his last 8 (not counting tonight, which still has a period to go).

        –Go Habs Go!–

  63. D Mex says:

Not hockey, but possibly comment-worthy :
    – IS it just me, or is ‘ Danny ‘ missing the boat just a tad here :

    ALWAYS Habs –
    D Mex

  64. johnnylarue says:

If the Habs can be, say, 5% as good as Prince was when I saw him at the Shark Tank 3 years ago, they’ll win this game.

I generally hate arena rock shows (impersonal, phoney performances, bad sound, etc.) but that little man with a planet-sized ego absolutely knocked it outta the park that night. It was a revelation seeing someone who was indisputably born to play music to a crowd of 20,000 or more. Euphoric, and more than a little humbling. (He certainly put my own musical pretensions in context…)

  65. LeGrosBill says:

Tb is up by one at the start of the 2nd.

  66. Storman says:

Don Cherry has to stop watching French porn,, he keeps calling Roberto Luongo,, Lelongo

  67. GGtheHab says:

of the four games on this trip I feared this one the most…could be shooting gallery…a fresh start awaits Wednesday.

  68. jols says:

Man, JVR is awesome. I love him even though he is a Leaf, which isn’t easy for me. Can’t believe Toronto stole him from Philly for Luke Schenn. Maybe one of the best things Brian Burke did for the Laffs.

  69. Habilis says:

I swear I can hear the joy in the CBC crew’s voices over this early lead.

    Leaf Blowers: [ON] OFF

  70. 24 Cups says:

San Jose fell behind Pittsburgh 2-0 after the first period on Thursday. Then they came out and laid down a beating. In the second period, San Jose out shot the Pens 18-8 and out hit them 12-2. Pittsburgh didn’t fair much better in the 3rd as the Sharks out shot them 16-4 and out hit them 9-4. Raffi Torres led the way.

The Habs are going to have to do two things tonight or they might face the same fate. They must score first (I know that didn’t help Pittsburgh) and they must stand up and be counted in terms of physicality. If not, poor Budaj will be shark bitten before he knows what hit him.

  71. joeybarrie says:

Modano giving Gainey a lot of thanks, love and respect for his career.
Nice ceremony in Dallas. Good to see Bob smile.

  72. jols says:

Leafs suck !!! They will blow this early 1st period two goal lead.
