Liveblog: Game 65 – Coyotes maul Canadiens 5-2

Vanek didn't help

The Canadiens' prize acquisition had a quiet night in Phoenix.

So did most of Thomas Vanek's new teammates.

Third-period goals by Radim Vrbata and Keith Yandle blew open a close game and sent the Canadiens to down to their second defeat of the road trip.

The goal was Vrbata's second. The Coyotes also got goals from Lauri Korpikoski and Oliver Ekman-Larsson.

Andrei Markov, with his sixth, and Alex Galchenyuk's 12th, on a 5-on-3 power play, scored for the Canadiens.

The Canadiens outshot Phoenix 26-23.

Third-period collapse

Radim Vrbata, with his second of the game, and Keith Yandle, on a Phoenix power play, blew open a close game.

PP clicks

A 5-on-3 power play got the Canadiens back in the game.

Alex Galchenyuk tipped a P.K. Subban shot past Mike Smith to narrow Phoenix's lead to one goal.

The Canadiens also had a goal disallowed when it was ruled David Desharnais had interfered with Smith.

In a reversal of first-period fortunes, the Canadiens outshot the Coyotes 11-1.

The game was barely two minutes olf when Radim Vrbata got the home team on the board, deflecting a point shot by David Schlemko.

Andrei Markov tied it up with a drive that was so hard they needed the Hubble telescaope for the video review.

Lauri Korpikovski restored Phoenix's lead with another deflection, this time of a Mark Stone shot, with Lars Eller in the penalty box .. again.

And with only seconds left, Oliver Ekman-Larsson beat Budaj with another long drive.

Phoenix outshot the Canadiens 15-7.

Thomas Vanek played six shifts and was on for Ekman-Larsson's goal.

Vanek makes debut

The Canadiens trade-deadline acquisition will be in the lineup against the Coyotes Thursday night in Phoenix (actually Glendale, if you want to be persnickety), where the Coyotes have not beaten the Canadiens since 1998.

On their last visit to the desert, in November, 2011, the Canadiens won 3-2 in Overtime. Josh Gorges, of all people, potted the winner.

The Canadiens are coming off one of their most exciting games of the season. The team blew a 2-0 lead in Anaheim Wednesday night before Andrei Markov, of all people, blasted the puck past Jonas Hiller in the sixth round of the Shootout.

Fans – and the Ol' Blogger – get a bit of a break on the time difference Thursday ..

Puck drops 9:10ish at the Arena.

  1. HabsKid says:

I can’t take the howling. Aren’t the coyotes supposed to be playing in Quebec City by now?

  2. CHicoHab says:

Is Prust still on this team?

  3. jmac21 says:

My pitch fork has be out since we hired this Clown to coach here again. Worse coach in the NHL and was a hab hater when he was working for RDS

  4. gumper says:

Just love how people want to crucify Tiny. In this line of work there’s only one way to learn…by playing. Nobody who ever played the game got good at it without making a few mistakes. Give the kid a chance.

The rule is perfect: in all matters of opinion our adversaries are insane.

  5. danhabsfan says:

3 games in 4 nights out west… Our#1 goalie out (who knows why?)… It’s better than most of you thought last Sunday, so keep it in perspective. This team is NOT a cup team.

  6. Timo says:

There is zero puck support for defense. Murray is behind the net and the rest of the stiffs are in the neutral zone.

  7. Storman says:

We need a goal from the 3 goal line..

  8. naweed235 says:

I think we can all agree that it’s difficult to win a game when your goaltender doesn’t make any timely saves, as Smith did for the Coyotes. For once, I have no problem blaming the goalie for a loss 🙂

  9. Habitant in Surrey says:

…give Our Team a mulligan tonight

    • Habcouver says:

They beat the team they shouldn’t have and are losing to the team they should have beat.

      We Are (Not) All Canucks.
      Proudly Canadian but passionately Canadien!

  10. johnnylarue says:

I suspect Price’s injury will begin to heal faster after tonight.

Budaj has given us all he’s got.

    • Habitant in Surrey says:

…don’t think when Our Team plays tired and dysfunctional in front of Carey that He would do any better than Peter Johnny

…Carey played behind the World’s best D in Sochi …Budaj would also have won gold behind that D

      • johnnylarue says:

He’s earned himself a lot of good will over the season, but Budaj definitely let in a couple of stinkers tonight.

That notwithstanding, you’re right–I don’t think Carey could have saved us tonight.

  11. joeybarrie says:

Back to back on a western trip, a lot of guys coming back from the olympics with a 9 hour time change to a 3 hour time change.
    New players.

its ok, we have done very well in the last 5 games.

  12. piter says:

Whats happened to Budaj? Just a shadow of what he was at the beginning of the season. He was THE best back-up. Maybe can’t handle the starting spot? Too much pressure?

    • gumper says:

Really? One bad game, round up the pitchforks and torches.

The rule is perfect: in all matters of opinion our adversaries are insane.
      Mark Twain

      • piter says:

One bad game? How many bad goals has Budaj let in in the past 3 games? Not one-timers that he never had a chance on, but just bad goals? 5-6? Open your eyes.

  13. CHicoHab says:

That howling coyote is the worst part of this game. I can handle the loss but man that varmint needs to be tranquilized.

  14. Timo says:

They won too many games they shouldn’t have… now luck is running out. You gotta play hard in order to win and not coast for most of the game. Perhaps too much partying in LA last night… too much of a good time. This game they won’t be too upset about… nothing that a lap dance can’t fix.

  15. Storm Man says:

    Great coaching MT well done

  16. jmac21 says:

    Out Coached AGAIN
and great back check Little Davey
Joke coach we could get Sid and Ovie and this clown couldn’t coach without screwing it up PUT DAVEY OUT !!!

  17. UKRAINIANhab says:

Well hopefully that ends the AWFULL Tinordi experiment. Habs will win Saturday 🙂

  18. Storman says:

The playing and winning without Price horseshoe has promptly fallen out of our collective teams but..

  19. ffenliv says:

Someone posted before this road-trip that 4 points wouldn’t be a bad result, given the schedule, the travel, and the quality of the opposition. 2/8 would be a pretty big disappointment. Hope they can yank out a win on Saturday!

  20. gumper says:

There’s been no solution for the trailer all night. Lots of quality chances by the Yotes as a result. Coaching adjustment?

The rule is perfect: in all matters of opinion our adversaries are insane.
    Mark Twain

  21. habzfan2003 says:

Ok… That’s enough of Budaj… Back to the kid Saturday if Price can’t go!

    • gumper says:

Bad night for the whole team including the coach. Not fair to hang it on Budaj.

The rule is perfect: in all matters of opinion our adversaries are insane.
      Mark Twain

      • habzfan2003 says:

I agree. There’s been no defensive help for him… But still he gotta make a save at some point… He can’t be giving up 3 in the first. He was shaky against Pitt to start and he let in LA’s goal on the first shot of the game… One that I think he should have at least got a piece of. Not including the Leafs game and the mid point of the Pitt game, He hasn’t played well imo.

  22. Habcouver says:

    Stop the howling!

    We Are (Not) All Canucks.
    Proudly Canadian but passionately Canadien!

  23. slapshot777 says:

I don’t understand how a player like Tinordi who has barely escaped without being scored on all night doesn’t know that taking chances like that is ill advsed, yet he does it anyway. Now his play not only cost the Habs a goal but the game and no points in this game and has given Phoenix all the momentum.

    • CJ says:

That play didn’t cost the game. The first period put us behind and significantly reduced our chance of winning. If we are calling people out, Budaj has to make that save. Sorry to be so candid.

  24. danhabsfan says:

Whoever said 6-5 earlier, was part right.

  25. D’s a mess tonight. G’night y’all. Yesterday was a gift, tonight was torture this period and 1. Traffic in front of Budaj has been horrendous tonight.

    I’m speechless! 20 years and counting…

  26. Fool of Chu says:

    Stupid! Stupid! Stupid!

This loss was completely unnecessary, and now it gets ugly

  27. UKRAINIANhab says:

Arghhh the fact Nate is not up is just ridiculous.

  28. piter says:

I was going to post, instead, goodnight all.

  29. Storman says:

The only thing that could make this howling 2 hours worse, is if Caillou McGuire was doing color..

  30. Habbu says:

And the rout is on……..g’night all

  31. UKRAINIANhab says:

    Thanks Tinordi! You started that.

  32. Timo says:

    Man vs boys. Pathetic.

  33. danhabsfan says:

Bring back a price for Sat, please

  34. subbaniac76 says:

    And that’s the game

  35. Fool of Chu says:

    Shades of Breezeby

  36. Commentators said it. Nobody picked Vrbata up. Seems that Phoenix has been walking in with little push-back, we’re dumping and chasing… this was supposed to be the easiest of the four on this trip.

Oh well, must win in San Jose to salvage a 50/50 road trip… Maybe Gally will get something go!

    I’m speechless! 20 years and counting…

  37. subbaniac76 says:

    See ya Tinordi!

  38. UKRAINIANhab says:

    …bring up Nate!!!!

  39. yeg hab fan says:

he wont learn if he doesn’t see the ice again

  40. UKRAINIANhab says:

Scratch that Tinordi is just AWFULL

    • CJ says:

He made a mistake that ended up in the back of our net. How many times has Emelin made a similar, or worse play that has resulted in the same outcome? More then I care to count. He is going to make mistakes. On the previous shift he held a puck in at the line that led to a scoring chance. I’m prepared to acknowledge his mistakes. I haven’t a vested interest in one player over another.

  41. danhabsfan says:

You don’t give up on young guy like Tinordi, it takes time to come into your own as a D guy. So relax. He is learning from this.

    • ffenliv says:

The team’s problem now is that MB raised the stakes/desire for a lot of fans – myself included. Tinordi might well be learning from this, but with the Vanek deal, this season went from ‘let some young guys learn’, to ‘better make some kind of noise in the playoffs.’

  42. PrimeTime says:

Tinordi has played well. I like the aggressiveness and give him a mulligan on that one. He’s still learning.

“Fans are entitled to express their opinion, but most of the comments on talk radio and on The Gazette’s Hockey Inside/Out website ranged from the mildly uninformed to the outrageously stupid” – Pat Hickey.

  43. CJ says:

Too bad. They had been buzzing. Tinordi didn’t get the puck deep and Budaj couldn’t cover up for the mistake.

  44. UKRAINIANhab says:

    God, Tinordi’s turnovers absolutely suck

  45. ffenliv says:

Anyone who thinks Tinordi belongs this season is, in my humble opinion, out to lunch.

He’s got a big body, which we all love, but the rest of the game hasn’t made it up to NHL scratch yet.

  46. Fool of Chu says:

What a stupid way to yank the game. Absolutely strookwid.

  47. kalevine says:

OK I’m out of here, they do better without me anyways 🙂

  48. CHicoHab says:

It’s in Tinordi but DD no urgency catch that guy

  49. Prop says:

Well, that’s all she wrote, gotta go to work, nite all!

  50. Kooch7800 says:

Tinordi jumped up and no one covered.

Not a great time to jump up

  51. UKRAINIANhab says:

HOW is Tinordi better than Bowlu

  52. CharlieHodgeFan says:

That was an all around ugly little goal.

  53. Harditya says:

Growing pains. Tinner will learn from it.

  54. Et le but says:

    Big hill to climb

  55. Mondou6 says:

    On to San Jose…

  56. UKRAINIANhab says:

    Get him off this team

  57. slapshot777 says:

Tinordi has been pinching recklessly all night. It finally bit him.

  58. kalevine says:

    terrible play by Tinordi

  59. habs-fan-84 says:

    Looking forward to Price’s return.

  60. UKRAINIANhab says:

  61. johnnylarue says:

    Living. Learning.

  62. danhabsfan says:

Bad goal… Might be the game

  63. jols says:

Tyler Seguin with 3 goals and 2 helpers for 5 points tonight against the “Nucks. Thank God Boston was dump enough to give up on this kid.

  64. Just A Guy says:

Not sure if it was mentioned, but I heard MB on TSN690, he was asked and no update on Bozon sadly.

  65. Et le but says:

Our boys looking tired…gotta dig down deep here

  66. Storman says:

    Nice save Booteye

  67. CHicoHab says:

    Murray the ox!!!

  68. danhabsfan says:

    Time ticking quickly

  69. danhabsfan says:

Give Vanek a chance. He flew across country, to play with guys he did not know, without even a skate… Just relax.

  70. Habcouver says:

Looking at the empty seats in Dallas… not good. They should close off the upper seats and move the people closer.

    We Are (Not) All Canucks.
    Proudly Canadian but passionately Canadien!

  71. Willy the bum says:

Is Vanek gonna do something? ‘Cause he’s playing for a year-end trade with a mascot.

  72. Habilis says:

I wonder if Gorges is in his condo right now yelling at his TV.

  73. Just A Guy says:

Oh and you guys have seen this scene before, the team that gets ahead early and sits on the lead?

    You remember now…

  74. yeg hab fan says:

slow updates, just got the 3-1 ding now
