Liveblog: Game 63 – Road trip begins with 2-1 loss in L.A.

If you like defence ...

All the scoring happened during the first 24 minutes of the game.

Jake Muzzin beat Peter Budaj less than two minutes in.

P.K. Subban's 10th, on a first-period power play, tied it.

The home team went almost 17 minutes without a shot on goal before Jeff Carter converted an Anze Kopitar pass on an L.A. power play.

And that was it for the scoring.

The Canadiens managed just 18 shots on Jonathan Quick.

L.A. had 22.

Scoreless third

The Canadiens made it interesting, with Peter Budaj on the bench.

But Jonathan Quick and the Kings shut the door.

Making 'em count

When Jeff Carter converted a honey of a backhand pass by Anze Kopitar on an L.A. power play it was the Kings first shot on goal in almost 17 minutes – back to 7:35 of the first period.

The Canadiens power play sputtered during two second-period man-advantages.

Shots were 8-5 for the home team.

Good road period

The game wasn't two minutes old when Jake Muzzin got the Kings on the board, beating Peter Budaj glove side.

The lead lasted 12 minutes.

A P.K. Subban shot was stopped by Jonathan Quick but bounced into the L.A. net off Jarrett Stoll.

Shots were 5-5, but the home team didn't get a shot over the last 12 minutes, after Jarred Tinordi's spirited fight with Kyle Clifford.

Laying siege to their castle

Here's a weird one:

The Kings have not beaten the Canadiens in Los Angeles since 2003.

That's a long home-ice dry spell that could end Monday night, if the teams' first meeting this season was an indicator.

L.A. visited the Bell Centre Dec. 10 and stomped the Canadiens 6-0.

Martin Jones, subbing for the injured Jonathan Quick, made 31 saves to post the shutout.

Carey Price was beaten on four of the first 16 shots he faced before being yanked in the second period. Peter Budaj mopped up and surrendered a couple third-period goals.

On their last visit to the Staples Center, Dec. 3, 2011, Price made 26 saves and the Canadiens got goals from Tomas Plekanec and Andrei Kostitsyn in a 2-1.

Puck drops at 10:40ish Montreal time.

Brew up some strong coffee and check back for live game blogging.

ugg, who is larry?, think i know who crankshaft is

  2. CJ says:

I tip my hat to Galley. What a worker!

  3. Chuck Kept Calm and Carey'd On says:

AARGH… work the puck for a shot then no one screens the goalie!!!

  4. MICP says:

Whites ozone penalty is the difference

    Brain dead

  5. Harditya says:

    Gorges and Emelin..geez

  6. Marc10 says:

Still in it. Come Les Boys!

  7. Storman says:

Galchenyuk centers puck in front of net,, but go figure no Hab no where near front of the net..

    • Chuck Kept Calm and Carey'd On says:

One of the most frustrating plays that I see. Look before you pass; if you don’t have an option, hold it behind the net. Don’t just give it away to the opposition.

  8. danhabsfan says:

I like Eller, but maybe he’s the guy that has to move, but what do we get, and can we package someone else with him? My guess is that no one wants our guys either.

  9. Habbu says:

Larry Larry Larry…..what are we going to do with you?

  10. Timo says:

Wow, this is brutal. Imagine Habs record if they played in the west. They wouldn’t be within a sniff of the playoffs.

  11. danhabsfan says:

Boone: do you know what hotdogging is. PK was NOT hotdogging

  12. Storman says:

PK that is so bad,,NHL not shinny,, also should have been called for the slash after the turnover..

  13. J.Ambrose.OBrien says:

    Will PK never learn?!

    I remember Dec. 31, 1975

  14. CJ says:

    Get the tomatoes out…

Sorry folks, but I’m not seeing the effort or engagement from PK. It has become worrisome IMO. He still makes great plays, but they have become few and far between. Throw the barbs if you wish, but I can’t turn a blind eye to it.

  15. Habbu says:

LA…..few shots, few goals, few penalties…….just wins

  16. Storman says:

Last 5 minutes,, as Christopher Walken says we need more Cowbell

  17. Chuck Kept Calm and Carey'd On says:

If they insist on shooting it in, then can’t wait so long that the wingers end up at a standstill at the blue line; they’ve got to hit the line at speed to give themselves a chance at recovering the puck.

  18. Timo says:

They don;t deserve to win tonight. No more miracles. Michael Therrien will have to make adjustments before Wednesday. Perhaps shuffle his 2nd, 3rd and 4th lines.

  19. Ghosts of the Forum says:

DD line is humming, but that’s about it

  20. Adidess says:

I’m not watching and so few posts by the commentariat or the Blogmaster right now…

Not the best use of scarce holiday time. I’ll pray for a good outcome to this game, see you guys 😉

  21. Marc10 says:

Come on guys. You owe Budaj and his posts this one.

Man if DD were our third center instead of our 1A. The day that happens, we’ll win the cup. Maybe there’s a doctor out there that can transplant Gally’s heart into Bourque and DD’s brain into Larry… oh and graft Briere’s hands onto Moen’s frame.

  22. Timo says:

Eller line… zero chemistry. No gelling.

  23. Habbu says:

C’mon boys just one. Finland got five by him

  24. CHicoHab says:

On the road with number 2 tender we are still in it

  25. scarboro_habitant says:

this rob ford/kimmel is f-ing hilarious.

  26. rljmartin says:

JG’s head really snapped on the replay….

  27. slapshot777 says:

Quick got lucky on the last Habs chance.

  28. CHicoHab says:

    Need a bounce

  29. Ghosts of the Forum says:

    Boys are playing well here

  30. danhabsfan says:

That was a good minutes, not repeat it until the end of the game

  31. Marc10 says:

    Still in it.

    Go Habs Go!

  32. CHicoHab says:

On that last play Gallagher Justus wrists it. Why not unleash a hard slapshot?

  33. danhabsfan says:

Didn’t know that Budaj could stick handle

  34. Dulljerk says:

Quite the move by Budaj handling the puck

No eternal reward will forgive us for wasting the dawn.

  35. Harditya says:

    ahahaha budaj dangling

  36. Timo says:

    That was slick by Budaj.

  37. Et le but says:

    Lots of time left…

  38. CJ says:

Wow, Williams went through Markov and Emelin like a hot knife through butter. Then the fun starts in our end.

  39. Harditya says:

Why is Therrien giving Markov-Emelin so much ice time, what a scary pairing..

  40. danhabsfan says:

    Did George’s get traded, haha

  41. Timo says:

Holy sh!t… unreal. That gotta be good karma. Come on, you losers!

  45. sheds88 says:

clearly habs need to make a change. to get something good you have to give something good. what would you be willing to part with ?
markov , eller, 1st round pick, plex ? me personally i would keep plex and consider offers for the other three

  46. Chuck Kept Calm and Carey'd On says:

The Honey Badger needs to know when to disengage.

  47. CJ says:

How many giveaways do we have tonight? PK just had three during one shift. Yet, if we can kill this PP we will remain right in this game.

  48. CHicoHab says:

This team has heart and soul. But no height and no fight.

  49. Storman says:

    Nice time for a shorty.

  50. johnnylarue says:

Watching Crankshaft bulldoze his way into the offensive zone like a viking berserker is a true joy to behold.

  51. Timo says:

If other lines brought half what DD’s line brought tonight Habs would be leading by at least 3 goals. Instead they will be done by 2 now. Great preparation for the game there, Therrien.

Another HUGE kill…gotta keep it a 1 goal game

  53. danhabsfan says:

Oh my, it should be 3-2 Habs now. How do they not cash in?

  54. PrimeTime says:

Nice save by Budaj on the Carter break and not a peep from the headmaster

    Game saving stop…let’s go boys!

  58. Timo says:

Whatever Michael Therrien did between the periods clearly worked like a charm.

    Tie it up boys!

  60. Timo says:

Woohoo… we get to witness another master piece powerplay now. Can’t wait.

  61. chesterfiled says:

Beer goggles on! I like this game. Counting on an upset in third with crazy bounce goal for ch to win in ot….

  62. Millsie says:

So what’s so bad about Ford? Kimmel endorsed him.

  63. DickandDanny says:

Off topic for a second but HTH does Boston get the same schedule season after season? They always play 2-3 games less than everyone else by the break, and NEVER have to play back to back games. Every year they are two to three games behind everyone else almost all season long. I don’t get it. They play 4 games this week and so do the Habs. But we play back to back, but nope not the Bruins. Always a day off in between. BS!

“A cannonading blast from the wing, by Lafleur”

  64. CJ says:

The realization that it’s nearing 12:30 am and the third period has yet to start.

  65. Habcouver says:

The perfect scenario: Habs will beat LA for the latter’s 2nd loss since 2009 when leading after two periods.
    Believe the Boone Jinx!

    We Are (Not) All Canucks.
    Proudly Canadian but passionately Canadien!

  66. slapshot777 says:

Can’t believe all the media when asked what the Habs needs are they say it`s on defense. What are all these young defensemen suppose to do. Just stay in Hamilton while defensemen that are traded for plays. If you want to have good defensemen develop the ones you have. We need big tough and scoring forwards.

  67. the_larry says:

If anyone is looking for a comedic break, Rob Ford is on Jimmy Kimmel, as part of his honourable “Promoting Toronto” trip. As you can expect, its a sweaty train wreck.

  68. DickandDanny says:

We need a Power Play unit. Not just throwing lines out there. And unless Markov and Subban play the whole 2 minutes we have no one to put back there for a second D unit. Why not try Briere at the point on the PP? I sometimes wonder what exactly a special teams coach does, because there is nothing we are doing on the PP that strikes me as being very imaginative.
Lastly, playing a team like the Kings, who all look huge out there, we can really see how our small players struggle to win battles, or just can’t make plays because of their lack of reach, as compared to the larger Kings players. We do need to get more size. I doubt the Kings have anyone under 6’1″ on their entire team.

“A cannonading blast from the wing, by Lafleur”

  69. Habbu says:

So with 3 games in 4 nights, do we see Tokarski start on this road trip?

  70. Texus says:

Damn, I would love for the Habs to make a push for Kesler but he ain’t coming cheap lol! No way we can compete with what others are offering unfortunately

    • Harditya says:

Why would the Habs need Kesler with Plekanec and Galchenyuk (potentially) down the middle. We already have Desharnais and Eller as well, if anything we need goal scoring wingers or a true top 2 defenseman.

  71. Timo says:

I wonder what kind of wisdom Michael Therrien is laying on his players right now.

  72. fastfreddy says:

Eller is a useful player, pair him with good wingers.
    CH = Les Glorieux!!!

  73. slapshot777 says:

Habs still in it. They kill off the last 42 seconds of that penalty, then take it to them. We are only one shot away.

  74. Habbu says:

Yup at one time there were lots of teams interested in Larry……..but then he went missing and now no one cares

  75. MICP says:

I paid money to watch this?
