Liveblog: Game 63 – Road trip begins with 2-1 loss in L.A.

GallyLA

If you like defence ...

All the scoring happened during the first 24 minutes of the game.

Jake Muzzin beat Peter Budaj less than two minutes in.

P.K. Subban's 10th, on a first-period power play, tied it.

The home team went almost 17 minutes without a shot on goal before Jeff Carter converted an Anze Kopitar pass on an L.A. power play.

And that was it for the scoring.

The Canadiens managed just 18 shots on Jonathan Quick.

L.A. had 22.

Scoreless third

The Canadiens made it interesting, with Peter Budaj on the bench.

But Jonathan Quick and the Kings shut the door.

Making 'em count

When Jeff Carter converted a honey of a backhand pass by Anze Kopitar on an L.A. power play it was the Kings first shot on goal in almost 17 minutes – back to 7:35 of the first period.

The Canadiens power play sputtered during two second-period man-advantages.

Shots were 8-5 for the home team.

Good road period

The game wasn't two minutes old when Jake Muzzin got the Kings on the board, beating Peter Budaj glove side.

The lead lasted 12 minutes.

A P.K. Subban shot was stopped by Jonathan Quick but bounced into the L.A. net off Jarrett Stoll.

Shots were 5-5, but the home team didn't get a shot over the last 12 minutes, after Jarred Tinordi's spirited fight with Kyle Clifford.

Laying siege to their castle

Here's a weird one:

The Kings have not beaten the Canadiens in Los Angeles since 2003.

That's a long home-ice dry spell that could end Monday night, if the teams' first meeting this season was an indicator.

L.A. visited the Bell Centre Dec. 10 and stomped the Canadiens 6-0.

Martin Jones, subbing for the injured Jonathan Quick, made 31 saves to post the shutout.

Carey Price was beaten on four of the first 16 shots he faced before being yanked in the second period. Peter Budaj mopped up and surrendered a couple third-period goals.

On their last visit to the Staples Center, Dec. 3, 2011, Price made 26 saves and the Canadiens got goals from Tomas Plekanec and Andrei Kostitsyn in a 2-1.

Puck drops at 10:40ish Montreal time.

Brew up some strong coffee and check back for live game blogging.

    That penalty on Eller was BS. The ref watches a LA player come in and grab Eller by the head and jabs him Eller punches back and he gets a penalty. Maybe he should take a couple of punches to the face and grab his head and see will he do nothing. This is where NHL officiating uses poor judgement. One of the first things you learn as an official is to use proper game management. I guess that doesn`t apply to NHL officials, because they can`t manages to talk and chew at the same time.

  2. scarboro_habitant says:

    not a bad road game. still in it.

  3. Max says:

    Eller gets abused in the crease by the whole King’s team and then lets a King’s player smell his glove and gets two for roughing?? Assinine.

  4. J.Ambrose.OBrien says:

    Our window of opportunity to trade Eller is closed and boarded up.

    I remember Dec. 31, 1975

  5. Marc10 says:

    It’s all good. Budaj talked to his posts like Pat used to do.

    Where’s PK at? Is he sick tonight. Other than his goal, we’ve hardly heard from him.

  6. Habitant in Surrey says:

    …hah, on NHL Revealed; Sochi. …Carey giving advice to Crosby on what and what not to read of a goaltenders movements

    …Carey, You DO realize You will live to regret Your advice to Sid, dontchYa ???

  7. yeg hab fan says:

    13-10 in shots apres deux, not the firewagon hockey i was hoping for.

  8. Ghosts of the Forum says:

    Think it’s time to hold Eller as accountable as DD was… ;)

  9. Timo says:

    Well, as expected, they suck against bigger, tougher team which require Habs to battle for every inch of the ice. No surprises here.

  10. johnnylarue says:

    Still a winnable game, which is more than you could say for it had the Kings gone up by 2.

  11. Mattyleg says:

    I’m off to bed, chaps.

    See you in the funny pages.

    Intermission fun: Rob Ford is about to get blindsided on Jimmy Kimmel in about 2 minutes.

  13. Adidess says:

    On a family vacation down in Mérida, Mexico… I like that I can follow the score in real time with this blog and know what my man Timo thinks about the game at the same time. I feel like I can say with confidence that the PP sucks ;)

  14. Timo says:

    Yikes. That was close.

  15. Et le but says:

    Wow…close calls!!!

  16. Mattyleg says:

    Kings getting away with a lot of stickwork and grabbing.

  17. SKHab says:

    The missed a bad hook against Crankshaft!

  18. CJ says:

    I’m sorry, but that’s such a weak call in a one goal game.

  19. danhabsfan says:

    Common, that’s just wrong, then call them both, Eller took three shoves/shots

  20. Congrats to Team Canada says:

    Rob Ford is getting redder than his tie.

  21. Et le but says:

    HUGE kill here

  22. Marc10 says:

    Good on Eller. That might wake him up.

    Geez… I’ll take that back. That’s two dumb penalties. I think he’s not going to play the next game if Bourni or Prust are available.

  23. Mattyleg says:

    Well, Eller finally did something…

    —Hope Springs Eternal—

  24. Timo says:

    Eller is brain dead. A special kind of guy?

  25. Et le but says:

    Galchenyuk more engaged tonight than I’ve seen in a long time

  26. danhabsfan says:

    Is Emilin looking better tonight? Maybe he needs less sleep.

  27. Timo says:

    DD trying to contain Kopitar… well… that was funny (and kinda sad at the same time)

  28. Marc10 says:

    It’s easy to look ‘woeful’ when you have to get a puck through a wall made up of Doughty and Quick.

    Still, Les Boys will get it done. Just need to hang in there and keep plugging away. Draw another call and give Chucky another chance at getting the next one inside the post.

  29. Timo says:

    Habs are playing with one line again. The other 3 lines do absolutely nothing.

  30. Mattyleg says:

    Haha!
    Brown trying to be a tough guy, hits Murray, and Crankshaft falls on him.

    That’ll learn ‘im.

  31. Habbu says:

    Tinordi’s skating has improved

  32. tyshow89 says:

    Well you know I do love Gallagher ( who doesn’t) but I am not sure that line is best for him… would like to see him on a line where he is the Go to goal scorer, not Just getting the garbage while screening for max pac…. wouldnt mind seeing the kid line again… just to see Eller play as well as he was at the beginning of the year…. give them a few shift what could it hurt??

  33. ooder says:

    Every single puck on bourques stick leads to a bad play. Absurd.

  34. Harditya says:

    Chucky almost scored a slick one timer. Need to see more of that.

  35. Marc10 says:

    Wow. Better PP but no dice.

  36. FANHABULOUS says:

    Markov auditioning?!

    All players are too effing stationary… the guys with the puck can’t pass it to anyone cause everyone is covered. Brutal.

  38. Mattyleg says:

    Kings are skating at us on our PP.

    Like Carolina used to do to us back in the day.

    Very annoying.

  39. monmick says:

    I see that Dan O’Halloran has been hitting the post-game chicken wings. That’s a warning for you, Timo…

    ~~~> Mathematically eliminated…
  40. CJ says:
    Something I’ve noticed this evening;
    Quick, although not the best puck handler, seldom allows a dump in to wrap around the wall. He is very effective at reaching pucks behind the net, stopping them and setting them up for the defenders.
    Price, who I regard as a better puck handler, seldom fails to stop dump ins.
    Perhaps there are too many variables to effectively draw a comparison, just something I’ve noticed. This little play really sets a team up to transition from defence to offence in a flash.
  41. johnnylarue says:
    Speaking of Cialis, this would be a good time for the Habs ‘PP’ to come to life…
  42. Et le but says:
    Let’s go boys; tie it up here! A PK blast would do fine
  43. Slackman says:
    Second PP oughta do it
    “When the going get’s weird, the weird turn pro”
  44. Timo says:
    Finally caught up with you guys… you will probably regret it.
    Habs have one trio that is trying to make something happen – the trio lead by ma man DD. Powerplay sucks and this one won’t be an exception.
  45. Habitant in Surrey says:
    …Our chatter is always about trade Him, and trade Him …and trade Him
    …but You know I’m very attached and admire most of Our Team …for their character, speed, skill, and may I say, their overall personality
    …i don’t want a Team of Redwoods …that ain’t what I think the Habs should be
    …to Me, We only are a stud scorer away, in addition to the maturing of young D prospects
  46. Habcouver says:
    Neither goalie is one of three stars tonight.
    We Are (Not) All Canucks.
    Proudly Canadian but passionately Canadien!
  47. johnnylarue says:
    Half muzzle, half muffin. Full Muzzin.
  48. Et le but says:
    Tough crowd here tonight…we’re trailing 2-1 with half a game to play
  49. WhatUp says:
    total zone domination by the Habs…great PP..man bring on the cup, we are for real this year..next game should be easier..regardless of the score games like these make you realize how far we are from contending. Price muddies the water
  50. Mattyleg says:
    This is better.
    A good shift by the top line.
    Lots of skating and pressure.
  51. Marc10 says:
    Time for Tiny to punch someone in the face.
    Can’t say this enough…Bourque has to go!
  53. Storman says:
    We have to stop playing our Poor Play unit when LA takes a penalty,
  54. Max says:
    Eller seems disinterested.Almost like he’d rather be anywhere else but in the game.
  55. Mattyleg says:
    Playing out west is always difficult.
    I have to say that the Habs haven’t missed many passes so far tonight. Some are the guys in white sweaters, but most are to the guys wearing black sweaters.
  57. danhabsfan says:
    I like the positioning of the cameras
  58. danhabsfan says:
    Habs need a time out, or a commercial
  65. UKRAINIANhab says:
    How many Teams have “sold” penalties on the habs this year…
  66. Marc10 says:
    Yep. The Fourth Line hurt us there. Not good.
    Still, we’re in it. Time for Eller to snap out of his funk. We need his line to contribute.
  67. Mattyleg says:
    Good.
    Our turn now.
