Liveblog: Game 63 – Road trip begins with 2-1 loss in L.A.

If you like defence ...

All the scoring happened during the first 24 minutes of the game.

Jake Muzzin beat Peter Budaj less than two minutes in.

P.K. Subban's 10th, on a first-period power play, tied it.

The home team went almost 17 minutes without a shot on goal before Jeff Carter converted an Anze Kopitar pass on an L.A. power play.

And that was it for the scoring.

The Canadiens managed just 18 shots on Jonathan Quick.

L.A. had 22.

Scoreless third

The Canadiens made it interesting, with Peter Budaj on the bench.

But Jonathan Quick and the Kings shut the door.

Making 'em count

When Jeff Carter converted a honey of a backhand pass by Anze Kopitar on an L.A. power play it was the Kings first shot on goal in almost 17 minutes – back to 7:35 of the first period.

The Canadiens power play sputtered during two second-period man-advantages.

Shots were 8-5 for the home team.

Good road period

The game wasn't two minutes old when Jake Muzzin got the Kings on the board, beating Peter Budaj glove side.

The lead lasted 12 minutes.

A P.K. Subban shot was stopped by Jonathan Quick but bounced into the L.A. net off Jarrett Stoll.

Shots were 5-5, but the home team didn't get a shot over the last 12 minutes, after Jarred Tinordi's spirited fight with Kyle Clifford.

Laying siege to their castle

Here's a weird one:

The Kings have not beaten the Canadiens in Los Angeles since 2003.

That's a long home-ice dry spell that could end Monday night, if the teams' first meeting this season was an indicator.

L.A. visited the Bell Centre Dec. 10 and stomped the Canadiens 6-0.

Martin Jones, subbing for the injured Jonathan Quick, made 31 saves to post the shutout.

Carey Price was beaten on four of the first 16 shots he faced before being yanked in the second period. Peter Budaj mopped up and surrendered a couple third-period goals.

On their last visit to the Staples Center, Dec. 3, 2011, Price made 26 saves and the Canadiens got goals from Tomas Plekanec and Andrei Kostitsyn in a 2-1.

Puck drops at 10:40ish Montreal time.

Brew up some strong coffee and check back for live game blogging.

I thought hat was a weak penalty call

  2. slapshot777 says:

Thanks White for that bone head penalty

  3. danhabsfan says:

    Maybe Tinordi can fight again

    Max on the PK?!?!?

  7. Just A Guy says:

Looks like White may have tweaked his knee on that play.

  8. Mattyleg says:

    Ugh. Not smart, Whitey.
Got the guy’s hip in the stones while he was at it, too, by the looks of it.

NBC report stating Kesler will not accept a trade to Columbus…

  12. Storman says:

Went to go get beer for the second period probably should not have driven, swerved to miss a tree, and then realized it was my air freshener hanging from the mirror

  13. GL says:

I think if the Habs could bring in two good scores and fill in some pieces in the next couple of years. They’re not too far away from bringing home a Stanley cup or at least a contender every year!!

We battle the good teams right now just imagine if we had a couple more scores they would take the pressure of the guys who has to score pretty much every game to win and the other teams would have more to contend with. I hope MB can do that for us by deadline and we would have a decent playoff ….

    Okay, just one more period…

Habs have their 1st goal of the season against the Kings.
    More sure to follow.

Emelin with 9:03 TOI through the first period

    • CJ says:

Maybe it’s just me, but goodness he scares me every shift. He had a nice shot on net, and a solid hit in the defensive zone, but his decisions with the puck are head scratchers more often then not.

      • HabsPooch says:

Nine shifts and nine minutes played…those are some long shifts out there.

      • Alex says:

He has his scares for sure, however I am not concerned long term. I recall an interview with Ray Ferarro (take it as you will) a few months back regarding Emelin’s drop in play, his answer was that even though a player can come back from knee injuries as quick as they do they are never back to 100% for a whole year, especially for defensemen. I believe and hope this will be true for Emelin, right in time for the playoffs if I recall correctly.

        • HabsPooch says:

He’s be much better if he could play on his correct side…

        • CJ says:

I’ve spoken openly on this forum about giving the guy a pass this season. He is playing the wrong side and is returning from a major injury. I hope his play improves next season and is commiserate with his new contract which will also kick in next year.

In the interim, I just need to get used to living on the edge of my seat while he’s on the ice.

  18. UKRAINIANhab says:

Gionta is a class act. One thing I can say about the habs this team is we have no Phaneufs or Kadris etc.

  19. Habs_4_ever says:

Is it just me or is that ice smaller than average?

  20. Mattyleg says:

    This is a textbook road-game.
Got to absorb the early pressure, and be opportunistic.
    Check and check.

…hockey players call obligated interviews with the press: ‘feeding the beast’ 🙂

  22. Slackman says:

Kings haven’t recorded a shot since the Tinordi fight.

“When the going get’s weird, the weird turn pro”

  23. durocher says:

1-1 after one, Habs kill off a penalty, hold their own physically against the Kings.

    I’ll take it

  24. CJ says:

Say what you wish about fighting, I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but following Tinordi’s fight the momentum clearly swung away from LA. He initiated that fight and looked very capable in handling himself against a very tough, experienced pro.

  25. scarboro_habitant says:

not the best start but they boys hung in there.

  26. DipsyDoodler says:

Our defense is pretty solid. Kings look like they’re flying but they can’t get a shot on goal.

  27. Chuck Kept Calm and Carey'd On says:

Two crappy goals; each team with just five shots… eh.

  28. Mattyleg says:

Holy Cow, Sutter just looked exactly like a mix of Sam the Eagle and Beaker.

  29. Mattyleg says:

    This 3-man forecheck of LA’s can’t last…

  30. Chuck Kept Calm and Carey'd On says:

I want Honey Badger to pot one tonight.

  31. Marc10 says:

Budaj is dialed in. Christmas is over and no more gifts for you LA!

Great game for Tinordi to see one of the best teams in the league up close end personal. Still, Murray and Tinordi up against Carter and Richards. If they get through this unscathed, I would be surprised… but hey, it’s yet another clear example of our patchwork D… a work in progress, eh!

  32. Habitant in Surrey says:

…on now, looking to see if tonight’s game being broadcast on TSN or Sportsnet here in Vancouver, I stumble upon ‘A Game Like No Other’ …sorta like a 24 CH on most players of NHL going to Olympics

…all countries’, not only Canadian …really interesting

…very hard to pull Myself away and return to tonight’s game

  33. UKRAINIANhab says:

Why is this crowd like Italian Serie A. Shot on goal and they freak out. Kinda funny

  34. Alex says:

I wonder if LA is keeping their eyes close on Markov tonight? If their PP is that bad afterall

  35. UKRAINIANhab says:

    Keep the pace!

  36. Storman says:

Trying to adjust color on my TV to make LA uniforms purple,, they look to big and fast in black..

  37. Mattyleg says:

Since the fight, the Habs have 2 shots (incl. one goal) and the Kings have none, according to Pierre Houde.

  38. Et le but says:

    Kings shotless since the scrap

  39. HabsPooch says:

So LA’s power play is 26th in the league eh? Time to give them Markov for Toffoli.

  40. Mattyleg says:

This crowd is cracking me up.

  41. Chuck Kept Calm and Carey'd On says:

Heh… that’ll make you want to work on your rebound control! Nice to see a lot of red in the stands, too.

  42. Storman says:

Lets get out of this period playing up hill 1-1 and then we get to play going down hill in the 2nd period.

  43. Et le but says:

    Game on

  44. Da Hema says:

    Ugly shmugly. I’m happy!

  45. CJ says:

A few more bounces like that we win this thing.

  46. slapshot777 says:

    Off Stolls Leg

  47. Marc10 says:

Doughty… He’s awesome. Carter is a pain too. And Kopitar… Damn those Kings.

We’re still going to win, but damn them all the same!

  49. Alex says:

Great PK, and then a great goal by PK!

  50. slapshot777 says:

  53. Et le but says:

Good kill…let’s tie it up now boys!

  54. Da Hema says:

I am not trying to be mean, but if there is any movement to award the ugliest coach it should be named the “Darryl Sutter Trophy.”

  55. Congrats to Team Canada says:

First in the league in block shots them HABS.

  56. Marc10 says:

Great game so far. LA is a beast. They came out to dictate the pace and so far… they’re doing just that.

A lot can change in a minute. The boys need to keep it close and keep skating.

  57. RiverviewCanadien says:

Anybody with a video stream link?

Folks, it’s Bushmills time, and that’ll keep ya warm!

  58. Chuck Kept Calm and Carey'd On says:

Nice rack! Why do I have a hankerin’ for some ribs?

  59. durocher says:

Games like these make me upset that we have Gio, DD, and Briere

  60. Marc10 says:

    Gut check time. Big kill.

  61. slapshot777 says:

Habs put a couple of good licks on Doughty and he will think twice about rushing up the ice with the puck. That was a week call

  62. johnnylarue says:

I’m enjoying this game in spite of the lopsidedness.

  63. Et le but says:

    Very important kill here

  64. Chuck Kept Calm and Carey'd On says:

During an intermission they should put Jennifer Lawrence on skates and see how far she gets before she falls down.

  65. PrimeTime says:

Love the fast games. Gotta keep those blades sharp tonight!

  66. Alex says:

Also, even though we are losing this so far seems like a great game. Fast pace to it, physical as well. Let’s hope we can keep up for three periods and not sit back later in the game.

  67. DipsyDoodler says:

    Nice dive Drew.

  68. Et le but says:

    Emelin came to play tonight

  69. Alex says:

The Kings sure are big, fast and skilled.

  70. sims says:

Weisse takes a big hit and makes a great play. Diaz who?

  71. DipsyDoodler says:

    We’re getting steamrolled.

  72. CJ says:

    Tiny came to play.

  73. FANHABULOUS says:

Perfect time to fight… well done Tinner, hope it swings momentum.

“You will not regret picking me” – PK Subban.

    • FANHABULOUS says:

I knew that would change momentum!

Tin chose a good time for that…we started flat, needed a spark. We’ve skated with them since…
