Liveblog: Game 62 – Canadiens blow lead but beat Leafs in OT

Bye-bye Bell ... for a while

The Canadiens won't play at the Bell Centre again until the Bruins visit on March 12.

In the interim, the Canadiens will play three games in California and visit Phoenix.

They ended their post-Olympic homestand with five of a possible six points.

But it wasn't easy.

First-period goals by Alex Galchenyuk and Max Pacioretty staked Peter Budaj to an early lead.

But the Leafs got a late goal from James Van Riemsdyk. And after a scoreless – and thrill-less – second period, the Leafs scored twice – JVR and Phil Kessel –in 2:25 of the third period to take the lead.

P.K. Subban made it 3-3 on a power play.

The Canadiens had two PPs in Overtime, and Pacioretty scored on the second man-advantage.

Canadiens had a 30 shots on goal, to 25 for the visitors.

Pacioretty's second of the game, on an Overtime power play, gives the Canadiens a W over their rivals

A shorthanded goal by James Van Riemsdyk tied the game at 2-2.

Then Phil Kessel, robbedearly in the period by Peter Budaj, gave the Leafs the lead.

P.K., on a Canadiens power play, secured the point that will keep his team ahead of Toronto

I didn't pay to get in, but stil ...

20 minutes of excitement-free hockey.

And it seemed longer.

When the highlight of a period is Douglas Murray hitting the crossbar ...

Leafs will start the third on a power play.

Great start

The Canadiens had two goals before the visitors had a shot on Peter Budaj.

AlexGalchenyuk's 11th of the season and Max Pacioretty's 28th gave the home team a 2-0 lead over the sluggish visitors.

But with less than three minutes left in the period, James Van Riemsdyk tipped a Phil Kessel past Budaj.

The Canadiens had 14 shots on goal to six for the Leafs.

A genuine four-pointer

The Canadiens and Leafs resume their Original Six rivalry in what should be a raucous Saturday night at the Bell Centre.

The home team sits third in the Atlantic Division with 73 points in 61 games.

Toronto is fourth with 71 points in 61 games.

This is Gary Bettman's Parity Dream:  A tight race for playoff spots.

This is the clubs' third meeting of the season, which began back on Oct. 1 when Toronto spoiled the Canadiens' opener with a fight-filled 4-3 win.

Max Pacioretty scored 58 seconds into the game and added a shorthanded goal as the Canadiens won 4-2 at home on Nov. 30.

James Van Riemsdyk scored the third-period winner and Joffrey Lupul added an empty-netter in a 5-3 W Jan. 18 at the Air Canada Centre.

Peter Budaj makes his third consecutive start in nets for the Canadiens as Olympic hero Carey Price continues to nurse what everyonbe suspects is a knee knack.

Habs have to go and have a go west road trip now. Tee leafs only have one game left against the Habs so it is imperative that the Habs keep building up the points

Sounded like Cole and Simpson was dejected at the end of the game.

    • Clay says:

You hear what you want to hear I guess… Cole sounded pleased.

Bob Cole was a Habs fan growing up.

        • CJ says:

Very true. Beliveau was his idol. Still talks about him every chance he gets.

        • slapshot777 says:

You think he would make the effort to get the names right then. The years that he had to call the Leafs games has him confused now. Lol

          • boing007 says:

I like Bob Cole. When I hear his voice I’m reminded of my grandmother who was born in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. She never lost her maritime accent after living over seventy years in California. She even learned French when she was a child at grammar school.

  7. johnnylarue says:

(Still, Toronto shouldn’t have got a point tonight.)

  8. HabSgt says:

This team has gone from being a Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde show on a game-to-game basis, to a period-to-period basis, to a shift-by-shift basis…

    Winter is coming.

  9. Et le but says:

Say what you want, but the Habs have shown a lot of character the last 2 games, never giving up (like some HIO doomsday prophets).
Bodes well for a tough 4 game West coast swing…

  10. NLhabsfan says:

Last time I say Subban has lost confidence….keep my big mouth shut

  11. D Man says:

OMG! Now my better half isn’t afraid to talk to me and my dog came out of hiding.

You can’t be both a Habs and a Leafs fan

Another one for the already bloated “Finding a Way to Win” file.

Special thanks to Bernier for forgetting the rules of the game of hockey.

2 big points with the Bruins having lost earlier.

As my friend just said. “I’m going to feast on Leaf tear soup tonight!”
    Love it.

  17. DipsyDoodler says:

PK scored the tying goal, made the beautiful pass that led to the Bernier penalty, and made the sublime broken stick misdirection play to set up the winner.

    • CJ says:

He sure had an Erik Karlsson kinda night. Two assists, but on for two goals against. Beautiful pass on the winner. Terrible pass on the short handed goal. Ying and yang!

Who were the 3 stars? Not the CBC , the real RDS ones?

  25. DipsyDoodler says:

What did the announcer call Van RIemsdyk?

  26. ABHabsfan says:

That calls for another 3 fingers of scotch, atta boy, Max!!

  27. slapshot777 says:

Finally we score on a 4-3. I was beginning to wonder if we were snakebit

  36. edtheh says:

    What a pass by Markov!

  37. Savardian Spin-o-rama says:

I didn’t know that was a penalty. nice

  46. ABHabsfan says:

    We want Chucky!!!!!

  47. WhatUp says:

I get the PK slapper but there has to be more to it than that on the PP…now put Briere on the PP

  48. Savardian Spin-o-rama says:

    Great pass by PK…truly elite!

  49. ffenliv says:

Anyone who reads my comments, if anyone does, will know that I generally support the refs.

IN my opinion (and I don’t know if the rules back this up), covering the puck that far from the net should be good for a delay of game penalty. I mean, that’s just nuts.

  50. db says:

Forget the trapezoid, a goalie shouldnt be able to freeze it that far from the net..

  51. ABHabsfan says:

    Fucking Phaneuf is a tool

  52. Et le but says:

    Penalty? End it now!!!!

  53. bsamsona says:

This is what we watch for. I can’t complain anymore

  54. Da Hema says:

    How did Briere miss that?

  56. Savardian Spin-o-rama says:

Ever notice how few players tape the tendon protector on their skates to their legs? After karlson’s injury you’d think more would.

  57. big_green_puffin says:

No one in front of the net…the leafs will let subban shoot all day with no one in front of the net

  58. ABHabsfan says:

I would say Galchenyuk but he likely won’t see the ice

  59. bsamsona says:

    My money is on patched

  60. db says:

Loser points are for guys like MT…

  61. captaink4life says:

My ideal 4: Chucky, Gallagher, Markov and Subban

You will always be a Canadien in my eyes, Saku

  62. Et le but says:

Gotta win it here!! Let’s go PK

  63. Danno says:

PK is going to do it

“Hey Richard, two minutes for looking so good!”
Updates, highlights & great discussions on all things Habs

  64. Mondou6 says:

I wish Subban would take the slap shot 100% of the time he gets a clean look. Every time he passes it up, nothing ever happens.

  65. duffy says:

I hate three point games !!!!

  66. AH says:

    Why doesn’t PK shoot that????????aaaargh!

  67. Max_Hab_Fan says:

    4 on 3. Let’s end this!!

  68. Ktowner says:

Well the cannonating drive by Suban salvages at least a point.

  69. bsamsona says:

    Go to bed
