Liveblog: Game 61 – Desharnais wins insane game in Shootout

P.K. Subban was benched for Overtime.

So was Daniel Brière, who scored twice in the game's first 60 minutes.

Peter Budaj, who was brutal on Pittsburgh's first two goals, stopped James Neal, Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkimn in the Shootout.

And David Desharnais beat Marc-André Fleury to secure an unlikely W over the Eastern Conference leaders.

Brendan Gallagher opened the scoring, but the Canadiens fell behind 2-1 on firsty-period goals by Neal and Deryk Engelland.

Brière's first of the game tied it at 2.

Then things got crazy.

Olli Maatta made it 3-2.

Max Pacioretty's 27th tied it.

Brandon Sutter's third-period goal gave Pittsburgh the lead.

Alexei Emelin made it 4-4.

Crosby's power-play goal made it 5-4 before Tanner Glass's major penalty gave the Canadiens a five-minute power play and Brière's second of the game sent it to OT.

Curious benching

P.K. played not one second of the five-minute OT.

Nor did Alex Galchenyuk.

Nor Daniel Brière, who had two goals tonight.

On to the Shootout.

Neal: Save!

Eller: Save

Crosby: Save

Malkin: SAVE!!

A barnburner

Brandon Sutter took advantage of a P.K. turover to score shorthanded for Pittsburgh.

Alexei Emelin tied it.

Sidney Crosby took a puck off Douglas Murray's stick and beat Peter Budaj to make it 5-4.

But early in a five-minute power play – after a questionable call on Tanner Glass – Daniel Brière's second of the game made it 5-5.

The comeback kids

Daniel Brière's 10th of the season erased a 2-1 Pittsburgh lead. George Parros's assist was his first point as a Canadien.

With Lars Eller in the penalty box, 19-year-old rookie Olli Maatta's seventh restored the home team's lead.

Less than a minute later, with the Canadiens on the power play, Max Pacioretty's 27th completed a spectacular series of passes by P.K. Subban, Andrei Markov and David Desharnais.

The assist was the 100th of DD's career.

Pittsburgh outshot the Canadiens 12-7.

Budaj shaky

Peter Budaj, playing both halves of a back-to-back for the first time since April, 2012, was weak on the James Neal goal that tied the game after Brendan Gallagher's 15th of the season opened the scoring.

With P.K. Subban caught in the Pittsburgh zone and Rene Bourque playing defence, Deryk Engelland gave the home team a 2-1 lead.

Both goals scored short side.

P.K. Subban and Josh Gorges on for both ... as they were for the winner Wednesday night.

Pittsburgh outshot the Canadiens 11-9 and will begin the second period on a power play.

Hit the reset button

Let's try this again.

The Canadiens were lucky to salvage a point against Detroit Wednesday night.

In their first game back from the Olympic break, the Canadiens played flat, uninspired hockey. There were more than a few boos and catcalls emanating from the 21,273 who paid premium prices to watch an "Optimum" game at the Bell Centre.

The home team gets better treatment at the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh.

And why not?

The Penguins have a star-studded lineup and are the top team in the Eastern Conference.

On their last visit to the Consol, Jan. 22, the Canadiens were pasted 5-1. Carey Price was chased 15 minutes into the second period after Evgeni Malkin scored the home team's fifth goal.

Peter Budaj came on in relief, stopped all 10 shots he faced and skated to centre ice to challenge Penguins' goaltender Marc-André Fleury during a third-period dust-up.

Fearless prediction: Budaj will stay on his end of the ice Thursday night.

Puck drops 7:10ish.

Check back later for live game blogging.

    Where’s ALN?
Hope Boone & his pooch aren’t frozen.

  2. montreal ace says:

Babcock did not play PK as he thought he took too many chances. MT gives Subban great ice time, and works around his defensive lapses. I don’t get the hate for MT as the team is producing under him.

  3. Timo says:

This one is for Mavid – Therrien is horrible, Fire MB!!! 🙂

  4. Timo says:

What was lost in all this is that George Parros got a point tonight. Come on… how often does that happen?

  5. Cal says:

Two points in one of the weirdest games of the season. Bank it and move on.
PK should figure out that going offside is waaaaaaaaaay better than coughing up the puck. He needs to simplify a bit and not try to do it all on his own.
The more wins on this road trip means less changes and the fewer trades, but it’s not like MB was going to do a lot, anyways.
Odd that with little ice time Brière puts up 3 points, including two important goals.
All in all, a sloppy game by both teams.

  6. Sportfan says:

So again I had work, but ran over to the Manoir with a bud caught OT, loved the save/funny attempt by Crosby and the goal by DD.

Sports and Entertainment in the link click and enjoy, clicking is fun!

  7. Habilis says:

Bergevin has to see that even when we win, it’s despite our coach. Galchenyuk had less than 12 minutes for a change. Gorges on the PP. P.K. was benched, again. Douglas Murray in OT…

He has to see it, right?

  8. theflower says:

I have to say Therrien’s antics are getting old. I love PK, he made a mistake and got benched, fair enough, but an offensive defenseman has the risk/reward aspect to his game. Doughty, Karlsson, Pietrangelo, they all make these type of mistakes and they do not get benched. For me the problem is the singling out of PK. Not moments after PK, DD gave it up that led to a scoring chance for the Pens, no benching for him? It was not a good mistake either, only difference was pittsburgh scored on PK’s mistake. While that is not the same, they are similar. DD went on to play every shift, PK rode the pine. I really have had enough of MT’s mismanagement of PK and others. As I have said all along, at this point we are winning in spite of MT and he couldn’t cut it with Pittsburgh, he surely can’t cut it here. I had to vent, happy the boys came back and won a shootout in a very difficult place to play and win. Go Habs Go!!!

  9. 4m3y2j says:

    Ok-here is my 2 cents.
PK is a do not correct his behavior by putting very tight reigns on him.Therrien did this in Philly and look at his work since then.
You need to reinforce positively to get best results.therrien is a bone head who has a linear coaching style and has zero adaptability to conflict. He is a hot headed emotional bully who gets big kicks out of
embarrassing star talent .he is a blue collar guy with an inferiority complex.

i think he has ruined Eller, trust me,they will move him and he will blossom under the right coach.Galchenyuk is next on deck.MB IT IS IN YOUR HANDS….
    john slattery

    • CalgaryHab says:

I agree completely. MT was a lazy hire by MB

    • theflower says:

I agree with that, Eller and the EGG line was playing great and everything was dumped to try and save DD, so MB wouldn’t look bad giving him the extension. As a result Eller has been tossed around like musical chairs which has only hurt his confidence. Frankly, there are a lot of trade options on this team but DD is first on my list. Let his better numbers get us something better that we would have earlier this year now.

      • Mr_MacDougall says:

Is it not possible that Pacioretty’s production is maximized playing with DD? I think Eller is a terribly overrated player among Hab fans. He is a legit bottom 6 forward and has done nothing to prove otherwise. I’m all for, moving DD, but Eller is no prize. Galchenyuk is,the player they are failing. Every second of PP time and top line time is essential. He needs to play center..

        • Mr. Biter says:

Wow, that must make B Gally our most valuable forward. Whoever plays with him gets points, take him away and they suck.

          Mr. Biter
          No Guts No Glory

        • Coach K says:

Therrien talks a lot about team being more important than anything. It seems the actions don’t support the words.

His ego is so determined to bust PK’s “perceived” ego that he would place his need to be the boss ahead of the team’s need to put a winner on the ice when needed. All just to make a stubborn point. Same thing seems to happen in his treatment of Eller & Galchenyuk. It’s positive reinforcement and encouragement that will help these kids grow not the reverse.

—When Hell freezes over, I’ll play hockey there too—

        • Coach K says:

While both Pacioretty and DD are decent in the O-zone they are clearly a defensive liability in the neutral zone and most importantly, in their own end. If Pacioretty can only play with DD then trade’ em as a package for players who can play with anyone. Short term pain for long term gain. The team won’t win a cup with DD as its # 1 centre. That should be reserved eventually for Galchenyuk with big strong Eller as the # 2. Right now their talent is wasted because the coaches are trying to make DD look good. Hopefully its because they are trying to showcase him.

—When Hell freezes over, I’ll play hockey there too—

    • Billyboy says:

If eller played for winnipeg, he would be a star. They have a coach. We win in spite of this coach. If he could not win with the stars in Pittsburg, he is not going to win here. This coach is a total idiot.

  10. jimmy shaker says:

    Eller for moulson!

    Shaker out!

    • Mr. Biter says:

      IN a NY minute.

      Mr. Biter
      No Guts No Glory

    • CJ says:

As bad as Eller has been, I don’t know if I’m ready to give him up for a UFA, who may or may not want to sign here. Based on his recent play perhaps I’m crazy in saying this, but I still see so much potential. The kid is clearly playing with damaged confidence, but the tools are there.

      • jimmy shaker says:

I think/hope MB could get something done for moulson. Why would u think that he may not want to sign here? True about Eller, and his tools but I could live without him if it means someone like moulson, Kane or byfuglin coming in and replacing him.

        Shaker out!

        • Mr. Biter says:

Liked you post about PK, but no way the Jets are going to trade Kane of Buf for Eller (unless Chevy is drugged and there are pictures of him with midgets, sheep etc). Jets think to much of both and not enough of Eller. This coming from Winnipeg.

          Mr. Biter
          No Guts No Glory

          • jimmy shaker says:

Oh totally agree. Would have to include gorges, a prospect and a pick I believe.

            Shaker out.

          • Mr. Biter says:

That might bring some interest for Kane as he’s had some problems in Winnipeg and has seen his time as a “Healthy Scratch”, but there’s no way Buf goes anywhere. MT with PK and Kane. He’d retire next day.

            Mr. Biter
            No Guts No Glory

          • Coach K says:

Do you think that MB (Mr. Character) would want Kane in a city that has been fine-tuning its party reputation for the better part of 300 years?? I can just imagine how that would work out.

—When Hell freezes over, I’ll play hockey there too—

  11. Storm Man says:

I’m not worried at all about PK I just want to see what kind of jackpot we can get for AM79

  12. jimmy shaker says:

PK… an elite player in the game today and will be for a long time. Problem is, PK is trying to hit a home run out there on the ice every shift. It looks like to me, that he forcing plays and trying to show everyone around the league that he derserves the big contract, that he deserved the Olympic spot, that Babcock was wrong for not playing him and that his Norris trophy was justified. Less is more for PK, and he will be fine. He doesn’t have to be spectacular every shift! just steady. He’s got to get rid of his MAB tendencies, and take care of his zone first. If the points aren’t coming, then ur defensive zone game needs to be that much better. Stay on ur feet, relax and make the smart easy play. Please PK you have the ability to be a Drew doughtyesque type player, take a page and follow him!

Attention, get briere more ice MT!

    shaker out!

  13. CHicoHab says:

Habs beat Bruins and Cherry 4 straight in 76/77 finals.

  14. CHicoHab says:

    Yes sir Punky!

  15. CHicoHab says:

I had the under in the Raptor game

  16. Et le but says:

Nashville just beat Tampa 3-2 in regulation

    • CJ says:

      Nice! That helps.

      • Et le but says:

This ‘terrible’ team of ours is 6-2-2 in the last 10
2nd in the division, 3rd in the conference

        Not too shabby, eh?

        • CJ says:

Far from terrible. I’m not convinced we are going to move mountains in the post season with this existing lineup, but we are far from the bottom. The Sens loss really hurts their chances. If we can beat Toronto on Saturday night, we can really put pressure on the competition to make a move to keep pace.

          • jimmy shaker says:

And I really think briere is going to play a big role in that!

            Shaker out!

          • CJ says:

I hope so Shaker. I would love to see him light it up in the postseason, where his star shines brightest.

          • jimmy shaker says:

Oops I thought u said that u were convinced this lineup was going to make some noise. I think with a move or 2……this team is capable of a few surprises.

            Shaker out

          • CJ says:

With a move or two yes, if agree. The current lineup, as is, I’m not sure. Lots to be decided in the remaining games. Also, team needs to be healthy. To that end, sit Prust until he is healed. We will need him 100%.

    • Habcouver says:

      Great results tonight.
Phoenix, Winnipeg, Dallas, and Nashville all pick up points on Canuckleheads. 🙂

      We Are (Not) All Canucks.
      Proudly Canadian but passionately Canadien!

  17. CHicoHab says:

And out of those 8 losses was to who???

    • danhabsfan says:

Your men the Habs in 76-77? Not sure all of them, but I think 2 or even 3 losses to who else, the Bruins,a nd I think St. Louis. But I think they beat the bruins in the finals. Anyone can confirm or correct this?

  18. Habitant in Surrey says:

…exciting back and forth basketball game …like the Habs’ game

    …triple over-time

  19. punkster says:

You may want to back off the crap on PK about that blown play…on the ice for almost 3 minutes at that point and he was gassed.

But, hey…you need to vent then fill your boots.

    Dump DD…
Play Larry and Chucky 20+ minutes per game…
    Go full Breezer.

    • Mr_MacDougall says:

Karlson has made that play for a goal 4-5 times this season…

      • danhabsfan says:

        And your point is??

        • Mr_MacDougall says:

It’s not national news when he does it.. His immaturity and poor decision making pops up every once in a while… I’d rather see him make the odd gaff (preferably not in a tie game late in the 3rd) while being creative than taking all of his creativity away. Part of him maturing is figuring out when to take risks and how to manage his game.. My point is that this giveaway is not a big deal.

    • danhabsfan says:

Agree about PK. And if t he future is this team, then play the kids and let them learn by experience. This team can’t win a cup right now, so pay a bit now to win in the future.

    • Mr. Biter says:

He should have been off the ice earlier and that’s PK’s decision. He also stayed on the ice longer at the end of the PP than he should have. Maybe he’s trying to win the game by himself, but it’s a TEAM game. PK’s gotta figure that out.

      Mr. Biter
      No Guts No Glory

      • punkster says:

And maybe that’s right but does that require a benching for the remainder of the game and OT? Is that the way to send the message, by potentially penalizing the team to make that point and teach that lesson?

MT got lucky here…those 2 points could easily have been no points and all because MT wants to send a message…2 points this team can ill afford to gamble away.

        Dump DD…
Play Larry and Chucky 20+ minutes per game…
        Go full Breezer.

  20. JUST ME says:

Cannot stand those two dorks on TSN radio the home of the habs Marinaro McKenna. If i were to come home to a negative bunch like that it`s not long i`m out of here.
Bottom line the habs won an ugly game but ours was one goal prettier that the Pen`s. So P.K. was benched so what. Briere did not play in overtime so what ? Why trying to find bugs every time ?

It is hypocritical to think that this team will win the cup this season but everyone is commenting as if. As long as they give a good fight it`s o.k. by me. It was the ever powerful Pens that we just beat wasn`t it ?

  21. boing007 says:

Eller won 10 of 15 faceoffs. Useless player.

    • punkster says:

Once the narrative gets started it’s hard to talk sense to anyone.

I like the kid, he’s going through a tough time, but he is still trusted enough to centre a revolving door of Therrien’s blenderized line orphans.

      Dump DD…
Play Larry and Chucky 20+ minutes per game…
      Go full Breezer.

      Crosby only won 54%

  26. C-Sword says:

The RDS analysts are suggesting that MB trades Eller and let Briere center the 3rd line. I was one of the biggest supporters of Lars, I don’t know if he’s frustrated or lost confidence, but he shows no passion and seems disinterested, he’s god awful.

  27. CHicoHab says:

Not sure why PK is getting the short end of the stick here. By far our best player other than Price.

    • Habsbill24 says:

Not so sure about that. Max is an elite sniper, probably 40 goal score over a full season. Every bit as good as PK right now who has been horrible the last month.

  28. habsfan0 says:

So,is it a certainty that Price will be ready for Saturday?
If not,I have no problems coming back with Budaj.
Highly unlikely that he’ll have 2 so-so games back to back.

  29. Marc10 says:

3 out of 4 points! How we survived Budaj spotty goaltending against the Pens… go figure?!

Oh well, here come the Leafs. They always get up to play us. Here’s hoping Whitey and Bourni feel better so the bottom of the order can contribute.

    Go Habs Go!

  30. danhabsfan says:

I don’t understand the hate for PK. If the Habs trade him, everyone would be upset. I have watched all the top guys make mistakes, and no one busts on them. Yes he made a bad play, but why did players enter the some early, then PK has to try to save the play. Look at the whole picture, I want to keep PK on my team. What about you?

      • Mr. Biter says:

Why whenever anyone dishes on PK it “Hate”. He was brutal tonight and if MT would have put him out in the OT and the Pens had scored, both of you would be blaming MT.

          • piper says:

He’s 23 but in his 5th season. I don’t see him regularly either but I see enough of him to know that he make those same kind of mistakes. My point is that the walrus doesnt glue his ass to the bench in OT and humiliate him. He sends him right back out there because he knows he will make up for it later.

          • Mr. Biter says:

But has he been making so many mistakes, taken bone headed penalties and does not seem to learn from his mistakes. Perhaps Karlson actually listens to the Walrus. Karlson also has 55 points (15 goals) while PK has 39 points (8 goals). karlson is -14 while PK has a +6 (don’t know if it includes tonight’s stats).

          • piper says:

When a coach shows confidence in a player it makes the player play with more confidence in himself. Confidence, one way or the other, is a huge thing in hockey IMO.

    • CJ says:

I want to keep PK too. No question. I still consider him a blue chip stock. Even big blue struggles from time to time.

PK is only going to get better. Although I might not have liked his effort on the play, I’m not interested in parting company.

      • Mr. Biter says:

I like PK and always have and hope he stays with the Habs, however he’s not playing well right now, in fact he’s been brutal lately and you can’t sugar coat that.

        Mr. Biter
        No Guts No Glory

        • CJ says:

That’s fair. He is struggling big time. Now this might be a reach, but if there is a power struggle between he and Therien, Mike will be gone.

          • Mr. Biter says:

Good point CJ. That’s why someone posted earlier tonight that PK’s going to be a coach killer. That is now 21/2 coach’s PK’s doesn’t seem to get along with in his young career. Not a good sign, however you are correct that PK plays MT coach’s so PK is more valuable as he’s on the ice. I’m not a really big MT fan, but if PK thinks he’s smarter or knows more than any coach that will be a very big problem in the dressing room for any coach. PK may win this one between him and MT, but if he cannot get along with the next coach, what do you do then.

            Mr. Biter
            No Guts No Glory

    • Storman says:

Players entered the zone because of position and speed of play approaching the opponents blue line on a PP dictated the puck should have been sent deep, in Practice, the play is to get that puck deep, and have the fore checkers retrieve the puck and set up the power play, anyways he played bad and is struggling big time lately, but i dont think anyone is saying trade him

    • Coach K says:

Pk is the best D prospect this team has had in a generation IMO. He just has to learn when to simplify certain aspects of his game and when to step up with his immense talents. It’s the same problem as Eller faces when he gets stuck centering two plug wingers. They end up looking bad and everyone including their coach dumps on them. Why should their coach expect them to dumb down their game to suit the rest of the team? It should be the other way around. The GM should be working his butt off to find players with a complimentary skill set and similar hockey IQ. Anything else is bass-ackwards to the direction this team should be heading as I see it.

—When Hell freezes over, I’ll play hockey there too—

PK didn’t suck all night. Therrien sucked in OT. How doesn’t the first star of the game not get a shift?
Murray on and no PK. No disrespect to Murray. He’s a warrior defensively.

  35. Storman says:

Not sure what bugged me more, PK’s giveaway or his reaction to the giveaway,,little baby hook which was being called, and his lack of effort busting his ass to chase down Suter .

  36. CJ says:

Any chance someone could link the video of Price and his father at the Olympics following the gold medal game that Tony Marino retweeted a few minutes ago? Very, very cool stuff. It’s only 6 seconds in length, but it’s powerful.

  38. slapshot777 says:

As for PK, he has to take some responsibility for his play as of late. This is why Babcock and the rest on team Canada would not dress Subban. In a tournament like this stupid little plays like he did tonight would have resulted in goals in Sochi just like it did tonight. If OK has any pride he will or should strive to be a better player next game

  39. jols says:

Subban, Galchentuk and Eller should get off this ride as quickly as possible. Get their agents involved and get the heck out of dodge.

Therrien already ruined Eller and the other 2 won’t be far behind.

What’s wrong with PK giving the puck away all over the place? And how about that short handed goal there at the end? For a minute there I thought I was watching Alex Kovalev giving the puck away against Boston a few years back…brutal! Would the real PK please come back. The Olympics are over! I have to agree with MT on this one. PK deserved a little pine after that giveaway. Habs were real lucky tonite. Better take the two points and run!

Budaj really picked up his game after he had that dreadful start to the game.
