Liveblog: Game 61 – Desharnais wins insane game in Shootout

crazy+1

Crazy!

P.K. Subban was benched for Overtime.

So was Daniel Brière, who scored twice in the game's first 60 minutes.

Peter Budaj, who was brutal on Pittsburgh's first two goals, stopped James Neal, Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkimn in the Shootout.

And David Desharnais beat Marc-André Fleury to secure an unlikely W over the Eastern Conference leaders.

Brendan Gallagher opened the scoring, but the Canadiens fell behind 2-1 on firsty-period goals by Neal and Deryk Engelland.

Brière's first of the game tied it at 2.

Then things got crazy.

Olli Maatta made it 3-2.

Max Pacioretty's 27th tied it.

Brandon Sutter's third-period goal gave Pittsburgh the lead.

Alexei Emelin made it 4-4.

Crosby's power-play goal made it 5-4 before Tanner Glass's major penalty gave the Canadiens a five-minute power play and Brière's second of the game sent it to OT.

Curious benching

P.K. played not one second of the five-minute OT.

Nor did Alex Galchenyuk.

Nor Daniel Brière, who had two goals tonight.

On to the Shootout.

Neal: Save!

Eller: Save

Crosby: Save

DD: GOAL!

Malkin: SAVE!!

Wow!

A barnburner

Brandon Sutter took advantage of a P.K. turover to score shorthanded for Pittsburgh.

Alexei Emelin tied it.

Sidney Crosby took a puck off Douglas Murray's stick and beat Peter Budaj to make it 5-4.

But early in a five-minute power play – after a questionable call on Tanner Glass – Daniel Brière's second of the game made it 5-5.

The comeback kids

Daniel Brière's 10th of the season erased a 2-1 Pittsburgh lead. George Parros's assist was his first point as a Canadien.

With Lars Eller in the penalty box, 19-year-old rookie Olli Maatta's seventh restored the home team's lead.

Less than a minute later, with the Canadiens on the power play, Max Pacioretty's 27th completed a spectacular series of passes by P.K. Subban, Andrei Markov and David Desharnais.

The assist was the 100th of DD's career.

Pittsburgh outshot the Canadiens 12-7.

Budaj shaky

Peter Budaj, playing both halves of a back-to-back for the first time since April, 2012, was weak on the James Neal goal that tied the game after Brendan Gallagher's 15th of the season opened the scoring.

With P.K. Subban caught in the Pittsburgh zone and Rene Bourque playing defence, Deryk Engelland gave the home team a 2-1 lead.

Both goals scored short side.

P.K. Subban and Josh Gorges on for both ... as they were for the winner Wednesday night.

Pittsburgh outshot the Canadiens 11-9 and will begin the second period on a power play.

Hit the reset button

Let's try this again.

The Canadiens were lucky to salvage a point against Detroit Wednesday night.

In their first game back from the Olympic break, the Canadiens played flat, uninspired hockey. There were more than a few boos and catcalls emanating from the 21,273 who paid premium prices to watch an "Optimum" game at the Bell Centre.

The home team gets better treatment at the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh.

And why not?

The Penguins have a star-studded lineup and are the top team in the Eastern Conference.

On their last visit to the Consol, Jan. 22, the Canadiens were pasted 5-1. Carey Price was chased 15 minutes into the second period after Evgeni Malkin scored the home team's fifth goal.

Peter Budaj came on in relief, stopped all 10 shots he faced and skated to centre ice to challenge Penguins' goaltender Marc-André Fleury during a third-period dust-up.

Fearless prediction: Budaj will stay on his end of the ice Thursday night.

Puck drops 7:10ish.

Check back later for live game blogging.

    Timo will be happy – DD does it again. No sense commenting – You never know if these Guys are gonna win or Lose – Just start the Game and see what happens!!

    Pacioretty, DD, Gallagher 1st line
    How about Galchenyuk, Pleks and Briere for our 2nd line
    Bourque, Eller, Gionta 3rd line
    Moen/Parros White, Weise 4th line

  2. 2014 Norris Trophy winner, "Dan Hamhuis"! says:

    Wouldn’t mind bringing Murray back for one more year at say 1.5 or so. I mean Cube is gone and Murray would know his role and most likely be a 7th unless we need some muscle in the line up.

  3. Texus says:

    loll Antichambre ripping the refs

  4. Psycho29 says:

    3 out of 4 points…..Beauty! (ok ugly but a beauty!)…3 points for Briere and a shootout goal for Desharnais. Hopefully that sends the trolls away for tonight….

    And the Loafs lose!
    Sharks bomb Flyers 7-3 in Philly. Maybe Flyers goaltending woes aren’t over???

  5. Danno says:

    Lots of Hee Hee Hee!! and Ha Ha Ha!!! and Ho! Ho! Ho! on L’AntiChambre tonight.

    Can you tell the Olympics are over 5-2 Jersey, 5-4 Islanders, 7-3 San Jose, 6-5 HABS, 6-1 Detroit, and 4 all between Washington Florida.
    That might be more goals tonight then the entire Olympic tournament. lol

  7. nova scotia vees says:

    I despise Therrien. You should never publicly embarrass a player. Tinordi in OT and no PK. One mistake which was Actually caused by some dummy going off-side on the pp. I think we lead the league in offsides.
    PK will go on to star elsewhere, while Georges will get a raise.
    Stupid,stupid,stupid…

  8. JUST ME says:

    Oh yeah ! 3 point out of 4 !!! What an ugly win but we won didn`t we ? We played against the ever powerful pens didn`t we ? Great team win, some had a bad game others had a good game. Builds team spirit.

    Budaj stones Penguins finest, DD scores the winner. Yowza!

  10. Habitant in Surrey says:

    …I can’t believe I’m saying this but if P.K. deserves $ 8 million based on His play the past few months, then Douglas Murray shouldn’t re-sign for less than $ 10 million

    • habsfan0 says:

      MT has gotten into both Subban’s and Eller’s head.

    • SlovakHab says:

      …I can’t believe I am reading this.

      • formerly known as the hc says:

        Who needs reality tv? More than enough drama here. Hahaha…. People, Habs 3 out of 4 points. Our best player injured. For some reason we keep on winning (more or less) …. Despite the terrible coaching (or so I hear)

    • CJ says:

      Based on his play the past month PK has lost some leverage. The larger body of work will prevail, but this has been a struggle. I had hoped the Olympics would turn his season around, but thus far, it’s been the exact same.

      Like I said during the Olympic break, Pietrangelo who signed in the fall for $6.5 million long term, should be the barometer. PK is not $1.5 million a year better then Alex. I understand the economics and tax implications differ between markets, but this is the baseline for the negotiation.

    • Mr. Biter says:

      We had better re-sign Murray for at least one more year. He started slow but has really picked up his game in the last 3 months.

      Mr. Biter
      No Guts No Glory

    • Congrats to Team Canada says:

      Maybe thats his plan to play himself out of Montreal, someone gives him an offer sheet that the HABS are sure not to match. And if they do, he cant lose financially. PK holds all the cards.

  11. rljmartin says:

    Murray is becoming our best defensive defenceman.

  12. gumper says:

    You won’t find me amongst either the PK haters or the MT lovers, but to me it was obvious and justified that PK be benched late in the game after twice failing to get the puck deep with the rest of the team lined up on the opposing blueline, ready to go dig for the puck. One of his little spinoramas resulted in a goal against. To me, both turnovers were examples of selfish play. PK is not above the other members of the team, and like most, may require the occasional reminder of that.

    Anyway, congrats to the boys on a gritty win and an exciting game. I thought Markov, Desharnais, Pacioretty and Yemelin all played well tonight. A well deserved two points.

    The rule is perfect: in all matters of opinion our adversaries are insane.
    Mark Twain

  13. CJ says:

    It wasn’t pretty at times, but the boys battled. 3/4 points to start this brutal stretch.

    Oh, and the Sens are getting smoked and the Leafs lost to the Isles in OT. Plus, the Honda classic with a great field is on the golf channel. Not a bad night.

  14. RockinRey says:

    Look forward to ALN and how you summarize this one BOONE!!

    Eller can’t do anything these days

      He is in the dressing room at this very moment, celebrating the win yet feeling that something just isn’t right. So he turns to Crosby and says…

  44. Et le but says:

    Advantage Habs…go Davey

  45. Rob Maguire says:

    Yeah, because Eller scores goals.

    • Mr. Biter says:

      No goals lately, but Lars was 3 for 3 in SO, so not a bad choice for MT.
      Just heard DD 2nd star and scores Game winner. Going to drive many of his haters to an early bed tonight.

    Therrien has to go. Subban is one thing but no Galchenyuk???

  53. monmick says:

    MB is going to surprise us all, and trade PK….

    ~~~> Mathematically eliminated…
    • Chris says:
      He may not have a choice if PK pulls a PR. :)
    • Timo says:
      Yep. And Subban will bury the Habs every chance he gets, a-la Leclair.
    • RockinRey says:
      PK was clearly a little overlyexuberant when he should have dumped it in. But to sit the best player on the team? Bizarre move. Could have cost them…..They manage two points…
      PK can frustrate but no more than a few others that seem to get a lot of latitude. Just sayin’
      ——————————————————————————————————
      You are entitled to your opinion even if you are wrong.
  54. Timo says:
    Let me guess… Pacioretty, DD and Markov
  55. Storman says:
    WOW< Douglas Murray TOI tonight 18 minutes, that equates to 36 minutes for a normal NHL skater..
  56. Oilrook says:
    No PK, Galchenyuk…or even Briere (2G, 1A) in OT. Gutless hockey from our coaching staff.
  57. habsfan2014 says:
    Sorry but Therrien is no Babcock….does he really expect to win by playing Murray in OT over Subban….mark my words Therrien will not last in Montreal with that kind of bonehead coaching
  58. Habsbill24 says:
    MT’s choices for the shootout: Parros, Moen and Murray. Says he will catch them off guard because no one has seen their offensive moves
  59. Timo says:
    Shootout. Oh well… at least they got a point and still tied with the leafs.
    I can’t believe Galchenyuk doesn’t get OT time.
          Weed Wacker Grandma Smurf
          • D Mex says:
            The Coach, the GM, the coach of Team Canada … he was on here saying he hated the HIO app tonight.
            The guy is attention starved : posts something, is ignored, so posts it again, and again … until he gets a reaction, and then he starts the cycle all over again with something a bit different, but just as negative.
            Take a look at the comment above – just states what he sees. What do you think he sees when he looks in a mirror ? Amore-on …
            ALWAYS Habs -
    They saved PK for the shoot out
    Oshie, Oshie, Oshie!!! Bah, wrong team.
  64. Rob Maguire says:
    Markov got turnstiled.
  65. Timo says:
    Wow. Is everybody holding their collective breath?
  66. BCG says:
    If I treated the Montreal Canadiens like the Montreal Canadiens treat P.K. Subban then:
    1. Past greatness does not determine current loyalty
    2. Mistakes would be treated with ignoring the team
    3. Spending money on the team would be based on performance and “other factors”.
  67. Habsbill24 says:
    Still no PK. Glad we have so man points in the bank, we can afford to make statements.
  68. boing007 says:
  71. doogie says:
    I’m sorry to see this but P.K. is going to be a “coach killer” during his career. How can M.T. possibly “win” with this kid on the team.
  72. Rob Maguire says:
    Can we reverse the Eller-Halak trade?
  73. monmick says:
    MT is such a subborn phoque. Murray getting multiple shifts in OT…
