Liveblog: Game 60 – Detroit dominates, wins 2-1 in OT

GallagherWings

A point they didn't deserve

Let's be honest: Salvaging a loser's point flatters your Montreal Canadiens.

In their first game after the Olympic break, the home team stunk out the Bell Centre for long stretches against an Atlantic Division rival.

The ineptitude included a season-low two shots on Jimmie Howard in the second period.

Todd Bertuzzi opened the scoring on a first-period Detroit power play.

With Peter Budaj on the bench for an extra attacker, Brian Gionta tied it at 1-1 with 29 seconds left.

There were 28 seconds left in OT when Gustav Nyquist won it for the visitors.

Detroit outshot the Canadiens 30-20.

They deserved it

The Red Wings lost their lead with 29 seconds left in the third period.

Then they won the game with 28 seconds left in Overtime.

Gustav Nyquist got the game-winner.

At least a ;point

With Peter Budaj on the bench and 29 seconds left, Brian Gionta beat Jimmie Howard to tie the game.

On to OT.

A season low

Five times the Canadiens have been held to three shots on goal in a period this season.

In the second period tonight, TWO SoG.

And the first didn't come until the period was 12:31 old.

Detroit had nine shots. It's 17-9 over 40 minutes.

Just pathetic.

And the crowd is not liking it a bit.

He's been there before

Todd Bertuzzi is no stranger to crease-crashing.

On a Detroit power play, Bertuzzi was softly bumped by Jarred Tinordia and then left to his own devices, which culminated in tipping the puck past Peter Budaj for the only goal of the first period. Old nemesis Daniel F. Alfredsson had one of the assists.

Detroit skated circles around the Canadiens and could have had more – notably when Tomas Tatar undressed Emelin and Douglas Murray.

Shots were 8-7 for the visitors.

The home stretch begins

After a 17-day break for the Winter Olympics, the Canadiens return to action against a team that is chasing them for an Eastern Conference playoff berth.

The Canadiens are third in the Atlantic Division. Detroit is six points back, with a game in hand.

The Red Wings are clinging to a wild-card playoff spot, with Columbus, Washington and Ottawa nipping at their heels.

Olympic Games hero Carey Price has tweaked something south of his beltline and won't play against Detroit or make the trip to Pittsburgh. Peter Budaj starts against the Wings.

Alex Galchenyuk – out since Jan. 8 with a broken hand –  returns to the Canadiens lineup. Defenceman Jarred Tinordi has been recalled from Hamilton.

Fearless prediction: P.K. Subban will play more minutes for coach Michel Therrien than he did for Mike Babcock in Sochi.

Er, seeing as how the shutout jinx worked, I hope the Detroit goalie only allows
    1 goal

Of course, the dreaded Subban dive. What a surprise.

    God Bless Chris Lee.

May he be reincarnated as Brendan Gallagher’s back.

Bozon pots his 31st and 32nd. Ice up 4-1 over the Warriors.

Anyone who PVR’d this game, need only to start watching from the last minute of the 3rd period. Too funny!

  26. RH says:

I knew there was a reason I resisted the overwhelming urge to fall asleep!

    • I fell asleep twice. If I’m going to watch a 1-0 game for that long with that little offence, I want it to be Canada-Latvia.

Devils coach Jacques Lemaire on the Daneyko-Kaminski feud – “Daneyko got mad when Kaminski said he was going to knock his teeth out. Dano has only two teeth left, so you can’t say that to Dano.”

  27. port elgin says:

Trade him while his value is high!

  28. habsfan0 says:

That goal broke quite a shutout streak by a Babcock coached team.

  29. The Jackal says:

Trade Gio while his value is high!

  30. Clay says:

Don’t deserve to be tied, but glad they are. Thank Bujaj for keeping them n it.

    A Poopasaurous Rex! Rooooooar!

  36. adadi says:

Excellent. This team waited until the 59th minute to start playing hockey. Great game plan. That’s what you call a Rope a Dope.

If this game was a dinosaur, it’d be a Poopasaurous.

  51. Congrats to Team Canada says:

Pittsburgh, Toronto(ugh), LA, Anaheim, Phoenix, and SJ to come. What surely could be a huge indicator to the post season.

  52. piter says:

Of course Bretuzzi ends a 18 game goal drought. A lot of players seem to break out against our Habs.

  53. adadi says:

Hope Tinordi doesn’t get sent down right away. I think he needs a couple of games to acclimatize

  54. RockinRey says:

I feel bad for Budaj. He should be disgusted with the offense or lack thereof.

you so called “hab fans” are brutal

  56. Congrats to Team Canada says:

    Rust? More like rot.

  57. Habsbill24 says:

So the players will say they were rusty from the layoff. Do the cash paying fans get a rebate because they paid full rates to see a mid season effort, not this crap.

  58. RockinRey says:

Do you have ALN already queued up Boone? Wouldn’t be surprised…..Not much going on in this one. Blog and write tomorrows summary at same time.

  59. CHicoHab says:

Both teams have rust tonite. Should be livelier in Pitt I’m sure.

  60. Habbu says:

The kind of game where it’s felt like Detroit has had an extra skater on the ice for the whole show

  61. PrimeTime says:

Typing on an iPhone sucks when you have big fingers.

    • piter says:

Yup, I have Fred Flintstone thumbs. It does suck.

    • twilighthours says:

I guess my point here is this: if you’re going to post about how we are all idiots (and we may very well be), you probably shouldn’t also come off like an idiot yourself (e.g. Spelling mistakes, confusing Bergevin for Bergeron).

From one idiot to another, I bid you good night,

  62. Congrats to Team Canada says:

Plex as usual the player you notice most. I miss the Olympics already, and it wont matter who good or bad Price plays. This team is not going to win a championship any time soon.

  63. Hoegaarden says:

Less than 5 mins left, time to get Marie-Philip on the ice.

  64. L Elle says:

The Olympics, for me, were very far from boring. Team Canada had possession of the puck and the game at all times. It wasn’t a boring trap system.

For me, it was the equivalent of Team Canada pitching a no-hitter.

    Watching this, is just brutal.

  65. CHicoHab says:

    Everyone enjoying this NyQuil commercial??

  66. Habilis says:

We deserve to be shutout tonight. Howard will surely get the shutout. No way we avoid a shutout.
    Shutout.

  67. Plekasuares says:

    Gio has played fine.

  68. Odie24 says:

Eller, Bourque, and Briere…F me. You know it’s over when…

  69. Habsbill24 says:

Even the goal judge is rusty after 2.5 weeks. So stupid to screw up a season.

  70. RH says:

What was that red blur that whipped down the ice and charged the net in an all out effort to score? I wish it were contagious.

  71. slapshot777 says:

Hey Boone know the game s boring but we are in the third period your still showing he 2nd period

  72. Odie24 says:

4 shots since the end of the 1st…from a professional hockey team. It’s f’n pathetic, and an embarrassment to the jersey.

  73. The Jackal says:

@GL – you’re right bud, this game is not fun, as opposed to Olympic hockey. Watching some fringe NHLers struggle to score and veterans struggle to have passion is a big step down from the Olympics. And just the other day some guys were complaining about how boring the Olympics were! Good grief!
