Liveblog: Game 6 – Canadiens cap road trip with 3-0 win in Winnipeg

Nice plane ride

The Canadiens will spend three hours in the air reflecting on a successful road trip.

Goals by Brandon Prust and P.K. Subban in the first period stood up despite a Jets' onslaught.

And the much-maligned Daniel Brière scored an empty-netter.

Carey Price made 36 saves for his first shutout of the season and 20th of his career.

The win may have been costly: Max Pacioretty was injured on his sixth shift in the first period and did not return.

Price holds the fort

14 saves in the final 20 minutes.

Cool as a cuke.

And Carey Price racks up his 20th career shutout.

Price holds the fort

The absence of Max Pacioretty forces Michel Therrien to juggle his lines.

Winnipeg keeps its trios together and outshoots the Canadiens 13-9.

Should be a wild third period.

Max-Pac injured

An excellent start by the Canadiens produced two goals ... and it could have been more.

Brandon Prust and P.K. Subban each notched his second of the season – on passes by Daniel Brière and David Desharnais, respectively.

But with the game well in hand – the hometown Jets took seven minutes to get their first shot – Max pacioretty drove toward the Winnipeg net and was taken down awkwardly by rookie defenceman Jacob Trouba.

Pacioretty was helped off the ice favouring his left knee.

Carey Price, who could have watched a movie on his iPad through the first 10 minutes, was very sharp when the Jets came to life.

Shots were 10-8 Canadiens.

Manitoba's team?

The Canadiens seem to like playing in Winnipeg.

In completing a sweep of their season series with the Jets, the Canadiens won 4-2 at the MTS Centre last April. David Desharnais – remember him? – scored the winning goal.

On Oct. 9, 2011, the Canadiens spoiled opening night for the transplanted Atlanta franchise with a 5-1 win. As karmic revenge for sending all those hockey-loving Winnipegers home unhappy, the Canadiens lost their next six starts.

The Jets are due.

Through two seasons since their move to Winnipeg, the team is 0-5 against the Canadiens.

Captain Brian Gionta returns to the lineup Tuesday night. Daniel Brière will be on the Canadiens' fourth line, with Travis Moen and Ryan White, the only Manitoban on the Canadiens' current roster. White will play centre.

Michaël Bournival will be watching from the pressbox, as will defenceman Jarred Tinordi, scratched in place of Nathan Beaulieu.

After the morning skate, coach Michel Therrien said he likes White's work in the faceoff circle (he's winning a team-leading 68 per cent of his draws) and added he's a Manitoba boy who will have family and friends coming to the game. As for Beaulieu playing instead of Tinordi, Therrien said it's important to give both young defencemen some playing time and he liked the way Beaulieu performed last week in Edmonton.

Mathias Brunet of La Presse ranks the Canadiens Top 10 prospects.

  1. Subban in Sochi says:

Carey Price. Wow. He’s dominated the last 2 games. Period. I’m glad he autographed his photo in my TV room. But the kid who signed it is a different guy now. “No bark just bite.” Super impressive. It feels good to “believe” in a Habs’ goalie again.

P.K. Subban. Just have to write his name; nothing can be said about him.

Raphael Diaz, the occasional author of cringe worthy Suicide Passes, played 24:08 last night. That reduced the amount of ice-time for “Champagne” Markov’s knees. Yea!! As importantly, Diaz produced a remarkably “clean” stat sheet.

I still wish that Daniel Briere would take a long walk with Henri Richard. Or Bob Gainey. Even Alex Kovalev. Even a flight with Kovy might do the trick.

Otherwise, absolutely zero to complain about in the Habs World (as long as MaxPac is not badly injured).

First 3 games of 5 game homestand against another group of NHL weaklings. Points banked now will eliminate the 20 game “Playoff Chase” with guys still recovering from Olympic Fatigue.

    Cannonading drive!!

  2. Subban in Sochi says:

“Vincent Damphousse says Brière may be nursing a groin injury.”

At least last night Daniel was not nursing “it” like Joe Thornton does during his private time. If this is a fractions class, Brière raised his level of play to 3/5th’s vs. the Jets. He doesn’t seem to really WANT the puck. I guess if he has it he’s afraid he has to “do” something with it. Hopefully he’s “efforting” at 4/5th’s level tomorrow night vs. another weak team.

As long as Brière is playing as he’s paid to play by (American) Thanksgiving I’ll be thankful…As for the first sentence quote, “No excuses.” None. Sit out 100% or play 100%.

    “Cannonading drive!!”

  3. HabCez says:

That picture of Price protecting himself from M Scheifele really stands out for me from the game. I like this new Carey as opposed to ‘cool’ as a cucumber Carey.

Well DD played a great game. I hope it continues.
Diaz a hell of a game. Giving checks and taking hits to protect the puck. I still consider him an upgrade version of JGorges.
Markov is getting his confidence back slowly.. even backing up PK’s miscues. PK has a rocket of a shot and 100% better accuracy then say 2 years ago.
Glad to see Briere get his first goal. I predicted 20+ goal season so he better score more. ;D

I like the lines MT is coming up with. DD on the checking line and he is responding well.

Prust and Plec hope they both feel before before next game.
Seeing Max get hurt just when he is clicking with Eller is tough and I hope isn’t to bad.

    Go Habs!

  4. naweed235 says:

Good on Price for a 2nd solid game in a row.

  5. Timo says:

Sheesh, people, what’s with all the server complains? Perhaps it has nothing to do with the server. Perhaps the IT guys are not turning the crank fast enough to get the bits down that internet pipe.

  6. Timo says:

CAREY!!! CAREY!!! Good job by Price… very solid play.

Kids did alright, even though they haven’t figured in to the scoring. Prust a warrior, as usual and good for him for getting a game winner.

Gionta’s line was solid but it’s time for these guys to score a couple.

While many people are probably praising DD’s play (I haven’t read comments yet) I’d say that a couple of good shifts don’t excuse more than one year worth of suckitude. Let him show if he can keep it up for the whole season, maybe then my opinion of him will change. Maybe.

I didn’t really like Subban’s play tonight, despite him scoring a goal. He made too many errors, two leading directly to a 2 on 1 for Jets. I think Michael Therrien needs to find a quick session or two for Subban in his program to reset him.

Overall, for a change it was a fairly enjoyable hockey game.

  7. oldtimerguy says:

I think DD clearly showed tonight just how many people here on HIO have no clue what they are talking about….way to go DD! Good on ya for shutting them all up. I had to laugh seeing how many of them ate crow tonight saying how wonderful you were…it was awesome! I have to also give a special shout out to tony marinaro who day after day rants against DD…Marinaro is a useless blowhard who knows dick about hockey…if anyone knows or speaks to him, you tell him for me what a fat overstuffed blowhard he is.

    • sheds88 says:

One game does not erase all of last year and this year so far. He a had a decent game, I would still love to see him traded. Marinaro is funny and entertaining, you must be a don cherry fan.

    • Trisomy 21 says:

      wjc is that you?

    • Marc10 says:

It’s early days, but he played great – that’s exactly how he needs to play to be worth the price tag. He’s doing better on faceoffs too.

As one of his defenders, I’m quite happy with him on the third line setting up guys and giving our attack more depth. Prust could have a banner year playing with him. Heck Bourque too if he actually hit the empty net!

  8. Habilis says:

Price has been so square to the puck this season, I’m convinced that whatever he is doing with Waite has really sharpened his positional play. He is at his best (as is any goalie I guess) when he is making the saves look routine.

Really awesome to see him stepping up and playing like we all know he can.

And yes, I stole the picture up top and uploaded it as my avatar. Too good to pass up.

  9. JO says:

I don’t think there’s a team in the NHL whom gets injured so easy. someone almost every game. Glad they won. Price was the main reason. May not have been pretty But 2-points is 2-points and we’ll gladly take them for down the road!!

    • SlovakHab says:

      Ottawa last season?
Pittsburgh missing Vokoun/Letang/Crosby for long stretches this & last season??
Injuries are more than common in the NHL and there is no way Habs get injured more than any other team. Yes, the season 2 years ago when we were last was especially injury-plagued, but other than that, we do not really stand out.

NHL is a vicious competition, let’s face it.

  10. Habs1962 says:

Thought DD had great wheels and made some great plays… the points will come. 2 points for Briere. Nice to see MT have them both on the PP near end of game. Go Habs

  11. sane hockey fan says:

Gazette should invest in some load balancing…sheesh

  12. Mr. Biter says:

Good start by Habs which silenced the building, but after the White fight the Jets got old “MO” behind them and had the Habs on the ropes for the rest of the game. Habs had many chances to put the Jets away but could just not score #3 (till late). Price was fantastic. Our seats were on Price’s side for 2 of the 3 periods and he just made all the saves look so easy. Even the Jets fans around me and Adam were muttering and eventually saying how well Price played. He wants to be the Olympic goalie and looks like he’s out to prove he belongs there. Shots that look easy on the tube come a lot faster when your down low and he just calmly puts out the glove, stops the shot and looks at the Jets like he’s saying got anything better. Did not see MaxPac injury just saw him on the ice. What happened?
Adam loved the game. Had 2 other Habs fans siting beside us and the Jets fan were respectful. Also there were hundreds of Habs jerseys wondering around the building as well as the “Ole Ole” in the hallways after the game.

Stat of the day…Daniel Brier is teams 5th leading scorer right now after the kid line and PK

Jets need to trade Byfuglien for a top flight center-man. They have nothing down the middle…

    Solid road trip.

The guys did really well to accumulate those points early in the season.
Happy for Price. Great job by DD, Prust, PK of course… and good to see Danny Boy.

Concerned about Max. What a Benoit Brunet run of bad luck… Good thing he’s a mutant with healing powers.

    Go Habs Go!

  19. HardHabits says:

The Habs are capable of a top 10 finish this season (and by that I mean overall).

  20. Say Ash says:

What was with the Jacques Martin tribute?

  21. Seps says:

    Couple points:

Great game by Price, Subban is fantastic, kids showed heart throughout the whole game…

Briere is *shudder* more useless than Gomez?
Anyone else notice our forecheck was non-existent in the 3rd, all we’d do is dump and change. Not a good way to defend a lead at all. You can’t be successful relying on your goalie to that extreme consistently.

  22. DDO_Habs_Fan says:

Even DD was faster than the server tonight…LOL

Also, the server for this site is garbage… can someone please upgrade it? Loyal fans come here on daily basis, it would be great if the server was reliable during games.

    • Da Hema says:

Honestly, did the HIO people pick up this goddamned server at a Syrian garage sale? I really am evaluating whether to simply delete my account. It isn’t worth it consistently waiting five minutes for this message:

      Gateway Timeout
The proxy server did not receive a timely response from the upstream server.

      • habsfan0 says:

With all the havoc presently going on in Syria, I didn’t realize they had time for garage sales.

        • Da Hema says:

My (less than articulate) point was that when HIO buys its server for $200.00 at a used computer blow-out sale, you get what you paid for….

          • habsfan0 says:

My understanding is that HIO people had a choice: buy a top of the line,up to date server with all the bells and whistles..or cede to Boone’s wage demands for live blogging.

      • VancouverHab says:

I share your pain, but it is free vanilla ice cream we’re getting here , after all.

(It sure does look bad on the Gazette through, professionally speaking)

  24. The Jackal says:

    Good game by the Habs.
They suffered after losing Max but they did not make many mistakes despite not being able to score on many great chances.

Price was excellent, and I hope and think that he will keep playing as such. I think it gives the team confidence and I think the D has played better as well.
Many have said they want Price to steal a game, and it’s great to see him play like he is, and it is great that we can rely on him to keep us winning, but it’s a lot more stressful to watch when you keep getting pucks shot at and it does not look like the team is generating much offense! 😛

    Hockey sine stercore tauri.

    This server sucks!
    Over and out.

  26. DDO_Habs_Fan says:

Like the Winnipeg fans but chanting Price’s name in the third while he was shutting out the Jets? Yeah, that was going to work…

  27. Hobie Hansen says:

Tight, well played team game tonight. Minus a couple breaks for the Jets, the Habs totally cut down on wide open chances. Gorges, Subban, and Diaz played well.

Prust played very well and the play of Bourque and Moen with and without the puck was very good.

If you give Price a chance and cut down the large amount of point blank chances, he’ll pile up the wins. The team has to play well in front of him, like any other team, and he’ll be one of the best.

  28. Caesar says:

Too Bad Price didn’t steal this game more. Just an ordinary shutout and another W.

  29. jedimyrmidon says:

Price is on top of his game!

But man, I hope Prust and Pleks don’t have anything serious. As for Pacs… fingers crossed.
